What is it?

• Each chapter plans its own local event• The national organization provides

grants to those who apply and show need to help support the event

What are we doing?

• Mission: Success(ful)• Students from Lansing’s Hill Alternative High

School will be visiting MSU for a day• Throughout the day students will be

participating in activities that are meant to encourage them to pursue a post-secondary education. Activities include:– Tour around campus and lunch– Financial aid informational session– Applying to schools informational session– Panel of RAs to answer questions

about student life– And MORE!

More on what we are doing…

• Students will be taking pictures with digital cameras throughout the day

• Students will use these digital pictures to create a digital story about their experience

• At the end of the day, students will receive College Toolkits, that include:– Brochures from nearly a dozen Michigan

Colleges and Universities– “The All-in-One College Guide” by

Martin Nemko– Roapmap to College Success– Sample application and financial aide info

This is all happening on FRIDAY, MARCH 14th from approximately 9am-3pm

(right after we return from Spring Break)

How can you help?

• Volunteer to work with the students at the event—all day or for part of the day

• Volunteer to upload the student’s photos during lunchtime at the Writing Center in Bessey hall

• Come to our fundraisers• Volunteer at our fundraisers• Help us solicit local business donations• Ask any MSU athletes you know whether they would be

interested in volunteering or just having lunch in one of the Cafes with the students

• Help advertise our fundraisers• Come to planning meetings. The next (and last)

planning meeting is on Wednesday, March 12th at 9pm in the Erickson Lobby

MONGOLIAN BBQ FUNDRAISER

• On Wednesday, March 12th from 6pm-9pm @ the Okemos Mongolian BBQ (Okemos Rd and Grand River—CATA #1 goes right by it)

• Volunteers needed:– Greeters (open doors for

people coming to dine and tell them that we are holding a fundraising and would appreciate it if they told their server that they were here to support us) (2 per hour)

– Bake Sale workers (2 per hour)

• Other ways to support us:– Bring your friends to come

eat and say you are there supporting us (we get $1 for each patron who does this)

– Donate baked goods to sell– Advertise—handouts to give

to people you know will be available in 134 Erickson hall by Wednesday. Tell everyone in your classes!

Donating baked goods?

• Sign up in the back so we know what to expect

• They need to be individually wrapped to be sold for $1 each

• Drop them off at 6pm at the event OR drop them off at Allison’s apartment on Tuesday, March 11th between 6:30pm and 9:00pm

Other Fundraisers

• Noodles and Co.—on March 24th, more information will be available at next month’s meeting

• Getting local businesses to donate—in exchange we will print their logo on t-shirts that volunteers and students will be wearing (letters available if interested in doing this)

• Safe Kids (Liz)– More info./Planning Day: THIS Wednesday, 7:30pm in

Comm. Arts building in Rm.308– Volunteering at the event (2/25, 2/26, 2/28)– www.safekidsmsu.com

• Teacher Recruiting Fair – April 18th @ the Breslin Center – Volunteers needed to aid employers

• Get-a-Job Conference on Saturday, March 15th from 8am-4pm to help check-in, lunch set-up, etc. If interested, email Rosa Soliz at  [email protected] and note if you are available in the morning, afternoon, or all day to help out.

NEXT MONTH’S MEETING

• Sunday, March 16th at 6pm in Erickson 252• We will be having a panel of speakers discuss

the teacher hiring process, issues in education, and more.

• Our panel includes:– JoAnn Preston, Principal at Marble Elementary– Randy Bowles, Principal at Williamston High School– Middle School Principal TBA
