Students must give 20-minute presentations of their work in front of ajury of designers

College Exhibition: ISD Degree Show 2014by Nick Hull 20 Feb 2014

Just before Christmas Car Design Newswas invited to join the final assessments ofthis year's graduate cohort from Institut

Suprieur de Design (ISD) in France.

This year has seen changes at ISD withRemy Constantin replacing PhilippeDelvigne as principal after 25 years and the

recruitment of Jean-Philippe Berlencourt as new head of Transport Design, while

the year ends with the graduation of 31 students in Product Design, 22 inTransportation Design and 23 in Digital Design after five years of training underthe Bac+5' system.

An unusual aspect to ISD is the final assessment through a formal jury

presentation to professional designers, giving 40 percent of the final diplomamark: students have 20 minutes to present (in English) a complete digitalportfolio of work from three years, including their internship work. This is followed

by an intensive Q&A session, with jury members interrogating the students'

methodology and process in particular. Because professional designers seethis level of work every day they're far more critical about the work's presentation, looking for new shapes and more novel graphic treatments at every turn.

This year Andreas Wlasak led the two Transport Design juries from Faurecia andCarole Favart from Toyota. Joining them were Luciano Bove, ChristopheBeaumont and Antoine Genin (Renault), Bjorn Schuster (Kiska), Yann Jolly(Toyota Kansei), Gilles Rougan (EDF) and Benoit Morin (PSA).

A typical 20-minute presentation takes the form of My process, My universe, Myapproach to Design', and ends with a short summary video of their work. Typicaljury questions centered on the passion of the presentation or the need for morecareful selection of images and, while the feedback is always constructive, attimes the comments can be blunt: "The result is nave", "Nice sketches but theselection and refinement of renderings is poor" and "The video was too rushed, music too loud, exhausting to watch". It's a tough grilling for any young designer, not least because all your student peers are sitting in on the session too, but itcertainly offers new graduates valuable feedback that will benefit them for thechallenging world of professional design.

In all, the six simultaneous juries meant it was only possible to attend a few ofthe student presentations during our visit. Here's a selection:

    Clment CarbonneCouach 4400 Fly

Carbonne showed a number of quick sail boat projects that had each typicallytaken him just 10 days to design. Other projects included an Opel Ampera for

2020 (pictured left) and a Seatec river cruise boat. Having completed aninternship at Couach yachts in 2011-12 he intends to resume his career at

    Couach in future.

    Anton-Lawrence Victor

Bentley Flow by VPLPVictor's project was a multi-hull sail catamaran with a vertical prow and sweet

descent' staircase to the rear transom. Also shown was his Renault Izzy project,a new three-wheel e-scooter with a large luggage pocket up front. The rider

adopts a kneeling driving position and the scooter can fold up when parked.
