Combat troops rarely suf fer injur y or fatality from bulletsbut are at high risk from primar y (direct) and secondar y(environmental) fragmentation. To combat these threatsLBA has developed a special range of Fragmentation ‘F’levels whose per formance is measured by a V50 value.

FRAGMENTATION TEST (V50 TEST)The V50 test is the internationally recognised standard forassessing the fragmentation resistance of personalprotection. The fragmentation test is conducted usingFragment Simulating Projectiles (FSPs) which are availablein a range of weights approximately following the binomialprogression. The test is conducted by firing FSPs at thearmour at increasing velocities until an average velocity ofpenetrating and non-penetrating projectiles is obtained.The higher the ballistic speed, measured in metres persecond, the higher the rating of material, shown as V50000m/s. The V50 (Velocity 50% or mean velocity) is theaverage of the velocities recorded for six fair impactsconsisting of the three lowest velocities for completepenetration and the three highest velocities for par tialpenetration, provided the spread is not greater than 40metres/second (STANAG 2920).

Bomb inhibitors are installed inairpor ts, government buildings,public places and shopping malls.They are also used in mail sor tingof fices and areas where there isany threat of letter bomb attack.Inhibitors are essential forsafekeeping of suspect devices ormunitions that are delivered topolice stations prior to examinationby bomb disposal of ficers.

Bomb inhibitors are easily installedand contained in wall mountedbright yellow containers which areclearly identifiable. Simpleinstructions on the outside of eachcontainer clearly show how to usethe inhibitor.

Quickly withdraw the largelocking pin in the top of thecontainer. The lid whichcontains the inhibitorimmediately drops down. Theinhibitor is easily lifted andcarried to where the suspectdevice is located. Place theinhibitor over the device,release the 10m draw cord andquickly leave the area.

Inspection by bomb disposalof ficers can be made by x-raythrough the inhibitor. No picturedistor tion takes place. 10mdraw rope allows for the liftingof the inhibitor for visualinspection of the suspectpackage at a safe distance.Disrupters can be fired throughthe inhibitor ef fectively.
