TOOLBOX TIPS OUTAGE PRE-WORK & POST-WORK TOOLBOX TALK

July 27, 2017 Issue 14

TODAY’S TOOLBOX Summarize today’s toolbox topics during toolbox talks. Reading line-by-line is not necessary.

PROVIDE SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE TO NEW WORKERS: A few contractors will be onboarding new workers to complete work for this outage. Please keep in mind that some of these new people may be very inexperienced—some may even be new to site. Look out for new workers by ensuring they understand the details of their work, are properly trained and understand the importance of work place safety. Lead by example and properly assess hazards in your work area, wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), be available to answer questions and provide advice to new workers when required. As a new worker, you should continually seek greater knowledge about systems, processes and hazards

in and around the workplace, and use a questioning attitude to gain clarity about anything you may be unsure of.

QUESTIONS FOR CREW: 1 How can you ensure the safety of new

workers taking part in this outage?

SUPPORTING ACTIONS:

Ensure all new workers are clear on the details of their work.

Lead by example and wear the right PPE, and adhere to safe work practices and procedures.

WORKING IN THE YARDS: For those of you conducting work in the yards, remember that you still need to adhere to safe work practices and procedures. Please ensure you are wearing the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and that you’ve completed a Field Level Hazard Assessment prior to starting any task. You are also required to have a valid permit before conducting work in the yards. Don’t forget to check into the yard with the yard coordinator on radio channel 10c before entering.

QUESTIONS FOR CREW: 1 How can you work safely in the yards?

SUPPORTING ACTIONS:

Adhere to PPE, FLHA and permit requirements.

HOT WEATHER REMINDER: With the increase in weather temperatures,

it is important to monitor your heat stress levels—especially when working

in high temperature work environments. If you feel tired, take a break and

drink additional water. Always respect the work/rest regimen in your area.

If you notice a co-worker who appears to be experiencing heat stress, have

the courage to intervene and strongly encourage them to take a break,

drink some water and cool down immediately. Inform supervision as soon

as possible, do not wait for a coffee or lunch break.

QUESTIONS FOR CREW: 1 How can you work safely in hot

weather? SUPPORTING ACTIONS:

Take regular breaks and drink plenty of water—especially if you’re tired.
