COLLEGE NEWS
College Principal’s Report
The college is a flurry of activities at present as final
preparations are made for our various celebration
activities. Several staff will be leaving and/or
retiring and the principals of each campus are
currently finalising staffing for 2013.
Two new Deputies – Mick Adams (Forster Campus)
and Nigel Wells (Tuncurry) will be joining us as well
as a new Head Teacher PDHPE, Deborah Cougle.
We are always excited to have new staff appointed
as they bring new perspectives to our schools.
Auditions for our 2013 College Musical, Disco,
’Disco Inferno’ are taking place over the next two
weeks and this is a wonderful way to again promote
the many talents of our students. It will be
performed towards the end of Term 2 next year.
The transition programs for Years 6 into 7 and Years
10 into 11 have recently taken place and by all
accounts they went ahead very successfully. Thanks
to the college staff who were involved in
coordinating these events.
The Forster Campus canteen will be closed for the
last week of this term due to it being refurbished.
The refurbishment has been long awaited and Ros
and her team are busy getting all in readiness for
the builders. This refurbishment is something for
which our P&C have been lobbying for quite some
time – so it is good that it will be finally happening.
As this is the last Dolphin for the year I wish to
thank the P&C, and particularly Mrs Robyn
Stevenson‐Relf, for their wonderful support of our
school. Many parents have assisted us with
volunteering for the canteen, transporting students
to sporting and cultural events, assisting in
classroom programs, helping out with the library
and, more importantly, speaking positively about
the many wonderful achievements of our students
and staff. That advocacy is something that we
cherish.
As we approach the end of the academic year, I
would like to thank all parents, staff, volunteers and
students for your support this year and, on behalf
of the college, wish you a happy and relaxing
Christmas holiday season.
Best wishes to you all

Super Sleuth Mathematics Challenge
On Wednesday 28 November, the Great Lakes
Learning Community hosted the Super Sleuth
Mathematics Challenge – an event for the talented
mathematicians in Years 5 and 6 from the six local
primary schools.
During the day, the teams of students competed
against each other and against the clock in a range
of challenging activities. At the end of the day,
Hallidays Point triumphed as Champion School with
Forster the runner‐up and Pacific Palms third.
The Champion Mathematician was Joey Taylor
(Pacific Palms) with Emily Dreise (Forster) and Billie

National Young Leaders Conference
On Sunday the 18th of November many
enthusiastic SRC Great Lakes College students
climbed on the bus to make their way to the
National Young Leaders Conference. It was a long
bus trip, but we finally made it to the YHA, which
was where we were staying for the night. We threw
our bags in our rooms and went shopping for a few
hours, much money was spent and it was a very
enjoyable day for us all.
After that, we headed to the Manly Phoenix yum
cha restaurant, where we ate food that tasted
really good, even though we weren’t sure what it
was.
Mrs Atkinson suffered the consequences to this
when she accidently ate a seafood dumpling, to
which she was allergic to. Everything was fine
though, because the next morning she came to the
conference after spending the night in the hospital,
and joined us to listen to the inspirational speakers.
The speakers were:
Dr Karl, who spoke to us about climate change and
how it affects us.
Ronni Kahn, who is the founder of OZ Harvest, a
service that collects and delivers food to charities.
Taga Paa, who was selected to be in Keith Urban’s
team on the Australian TV show The Voice.
And Kevin Sheedy, one of AFL’S most enduring
figures.
All these people were inspiring and the entire
experience was great. I had a fantastic time and I
think everyone else would agree with me. Thank
you to Mr Webb, Mr Martin, Mrs Laurantus and
Mrs St Hill for taking us.

Resilience is being able to adapt well to stressful situations in life such as family conflict, tragedy, mental health issues (depression, anxiety), failure at school, or the death of someone close. A person’s ability to cope with a stressful situation depends on the personal skills they have, but can also depend on the situation – a person may be able to cope well in one situation, but not another. The good thing about resilience is that it’s not a fixed characteristic in young people – they can learn the skills they need to cope with a range of stressful situations through parents, teachers, peers and other significant people in their lives. Parents can provide support at home and teachers can provide support at school. Here are some types of skills you can help a young person build For more information on resilience, visit the Kids Helpline website. www.kidshelp.com.au Healthy Schools, Healthy Futures

Parents & Citizens Association
As the 2012 year draws to close, I would like to take
the opportunity to thank all our members for their
commitment to the Great Lakes College and their
children's education by being involved, through
their attendance and contribution to decision
making policies and events throughout the year.
A very big thankyou to Ros and Belinda, our
canteen supervisors, and their team of hard
working staff and volunteers who have all done a
fantastic job this year. They all work tirelessly to
provide our children and staff with first class quality
healthy food daily.
To the staff, both teaching and non‐teaching, I
thank you for your dedication to teaching and
providing our children with quality learning
programs, so they may achieve their personal best.
Thankyou for the many hours of preparation,
training and attendance on excursions, parent
/teacher nights etc, you spend away from your
families so our children are given the opportunity to
experience other learning outside of normal school
attendance. Your commitments are very much
appreciated.
I would like to congratulate all those students who
receive awards at the end of year assemblies and to
all students who have worked hard to achieve their
personal goals for the year.
It shows what a great school community we have
when we are all working together to provide quality
education for our children.
To all our school community I would like to wish
you a safe and happy holiday season. Enjoy the
break and I look forward to seeing you next year.
Our last meeting for this year will be held at
Tuncurry Campus Library on Wednesday 5th
December at 7.30pm.
Members are asked to bring a small plate to share

FORSTER CAMPUS
Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Forster Campus celebrated the life of David Breen
at a recent memorial service at the Circle of Friends
on the school grounds. A plaque was unveiled, and
a moving ceremony was attended by David’s family
and schoolmates. I would like to thank Sarah Julian
(Celebrant), David Martin and Wendy Orman (Year
Advisors) and Annette Whiting (Student Services
Officer) for their support of students during this
difficult time.
I would like to highlight to all parents that work is
still continuing at school in all classes. Please ensure
your child comes to school each day prepared to
work and has all equipment needed. It is
unfortunate that some students “shut down” for
the year too early and may miss valuable
instruction which will support their learning next
year.
Our annual Year 10 Dinner is rapidly approaching.
Some students have already received their
invitation to this event. If your child has not
received one it may be due to; outstanding fees,
outstanding work, poor behaviour throughout the
year, unsatisfactory uniform standards throughout
the year or unsatisfactory attendance.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to
thank all staff for their hard work and dedication to
the profession and wish them, as well as all parents
and students, a safe and happy Christmas, and I
look forward to working with you next year.
Best wishes

Deputy Principal’s Report
The end of 2012 is almost here and as usual this is a
very busy time at Forster Campus. The retirement
of Kim Hamilton last Friday has left a huge void as
she was the first port of call for most of us when it
came to Board of Studies, Distance Education,
timetable, and curriculum or welfare issues. Her
knowledge of policies and processes is
phenomenal.
My temporary stint in the Deputy Chair this term
has opened my eyes to the full gamut of the role
here at Forster Campus. In any day you can go from
organising casual teachers, inputting into the
writing of leadership courses, planning college
initiatives, supporting distressed parents and
grandparents, finding missing students, liaising with
health and education professionals, dealing with
dead sheep or catching stray dogs. No matter what
is on the ‘to do’ list supporting students is the first
priority. This can take many forms such as
organising classes for 2013, interviewing students
and teachers regarding incidents, reviewing current
procedures and flow charts, monitoring resources
and budgets as well as day to day activities. These
behind the scenes activities were carried out by Kim
with precision. Her local knowledge, skills and
obvious high regard for Forster Campus will be
missed in Administration.
Staff have finished school reports and they are
currently being edited and printed off ready for
distribution. It has been great to read the accolades
that have been written about students’ efforts and
achievement. Many students have been involved in
the rewards excursions that have been organised by
the Year Advisors. The organisers should be
acknowledged as well as the teachers who cover
their classes while they are away and the office
staff who handle the bookings, payments and
phone calls from parents confirming times. The
success of these excursions is a real team effort.
I have enjoyed the opportunity I had of being
relieving Deputy Principal – Stage 4 this term. It is
great to see another side of the organisation and
how it has differed from my past experiences. I am
looking forward to returning to the Mathematics
Department with 2 new fully trained Mathematics
teachers and the implementation of the NSW
version of the National Curriculum to keep us
stimulated. 2013 is going to be an industrious and
exciting year.

Girl’s Day Out
On Monday 17th September Week 10 Term 3, all
Year 7 and 10 girls from Forster Campus attended
“Girls’ Day Out” at Club Forster . This day was based
around building resilience, setting life goals and
looking at the opportunities that are available to us
as young women.
Approximately 100 girls, 7 staff, 3 community
member guest speakers, 1 police officer and 4
Community Health workers attended the day and
students worked their way through 5 workshops.
The workshops included:
A Yarning Circle, Resilience awareness, Mental
Health, Team work and Careers talks.
The students enjoyed their workshops and were
praised for their participation and involvement by
the presenters. We finished out day with a beach
walk and a late lunch at Palmgrove Park before
making our way back to school.
Overall the day helped the girls build positive
relationships with adults and their peers while
giving them some food for thought on how they
could better deal with situations they face in life.
In 2013 “Girls’ Day Out” will occur in Term 1 instead
of Term 4 as the students and staff thought the
relationships they forged on the day would be
benefited upon more readily if they were develop
dearly in the year.

Sticker Competition Winner
As one of the activities participated in by Year 7 and
10 girls from Forster Campus during ‘Girls’ Day Out’,
CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health
Service) ran a design competition for Mental Health
Month, to create a sticker that promoted
‘connectedness’.
The winning entry was from Michelle‐Maree Parry
of Year 10 who depicted how we all stay connected
through her design.
Congratulations Michelle, your design will now be
made into stickers and be distributed through
Community Health.

Reading More, Not Less The PRC at Forster Campus
2012 has been our most successful year to date
with the Premier's Reading Challenge. 125 of a
possible 160 Year 7 students completed the
PRC. Each student read at least 20 books, a basic
condition, and had twelve months to do so. With
readers from a very broad range of abilities and
literacy levels taking part, the PRC is dovetailed to
suit each reader.
To maintain enthusiasm and energy, (a genuine
problem for struggling readers, mobile phone
addicts and Facebook friends), we have a 'leader
board', where competition becomes a motivator.
We also punctuate the year with The Quiz, which
is open to participants only. Successful entries are
placed in 'the barrel' and Mr Phil Grieve, Head
Teacher of English, draws our winner.
This year, Tayla Jones of 7 Wollemi (pictured), took
home the 2 movie tickets, popcorn and choc‐top
vouchers. Congratulations to all of the 125 students
who finished and for those who came very close.
Our successful participation in the PRC literacy
program is only possible because of generous
English Faculty support.

Dragon Boat Regatta
The Great Lakes College Forster Campus Dragon
Boat student team competed in the recent Great
Lakes Pearl Dragon’s first Dragon Boat Regatta at
Forster Keys on Sunday 25th November. Students
had been training each Wednesday afternoon for
sport on Wallis Lake in preparation for the regatta.
A number of students were unable to make the
regatta so other students volunteered to join to the
team on the day including Mason and Nicolas Ping,
grandchildren of Pearl Dragon, Trish Ping (also
Gathang Warrior at the Regatta), Abbie Mulhall
(Year 10 student), Nathan Ross‐Kelly (Year 10
student), Chloe and Brooke Malzard (who had
never paddled till the Regatta), Jayde Doyle (also
Gathang Warrior at the Regatta) and Matthew and
Bianca Heiss (children of staff member Peter Heiss).
The team looked really good on the water as they
competed against the adult community teams. The
many sport afternoons paid off as the team took
out first place at the inaugural regatta.
Great Lakes College Forster Campus also put
together a team of staff, family members and some
Pearl Dragons. With only 20 seats in the boat, the
selection process was difficult – “can you make it?”
was often the term used by Wendy Orman (Pearl
Dragon) as she made her way around the Forster
Campus staff rooms. On the day, there was no
shortage of excitement. The team started out really
strong, recording the fastest community team time
of the day (59.28 seconds for the 200m race). As
the day progressed, the team found the
competition tough. There were paddles hitting,
frantic pace, water everywhere, screaming “come
on” and great times. Despite a controversial major
final where we suspect ‘we were robbed!’ we all
had a great day. We were very pleased with our
first attempt at dragon boating in the first ever
dragon boat regatta in Forster. Hopefully next year
we may be able to get two staff teams to line up for
our campus.

Manning Great Lakes High Schools Technology Display
It was with a great sense of excitement that a large
crowd gathered at Taree on the evening of the 22nd
of November. They had come to see the awards
presentation of the Manning Great Lakes High
Schools Technology Display. People had been filing
through the Bunnings Hardware store, who had
graciously given us the space for the display, for the
past three days. The scope of the projects ranged
from hand‐made clocks to pencil boxes, produced
by students from year 7 to year 12.
The teachers from the Great Lakes College‐ Forster
campus were thrilled to see three of their students
gain awards. Kai Dawson received a commendation
for his year 9 metal project, completed under the
guidance of Mr Col Stewart; with Jordan Hallet also
receiving a commendation for his book cabinet.
Cody Page‐Bulmer was the “completely stoked” big
winner from the College, being awarded first place
in the Year 9 Industrial Technology/Timber section
for his cabinet, made under the tutelage of a very
happy Mr Steve Castles.
The formal presentation was carried out by major
sponsors, Mr David Paff from United Group Rail,
and Greg Dixon from Manning River Steel, with
Cody receiving a great prize of woodworking
equipment.

Principal’s Report
It is hard to believe that the year is rapidly drawing
to a close. It is certainly a very busy and exciting
time for all of us. This edition of the Dolphin is
being sent home as a hard copy and so I thought
that I would take this opportunity to recap a few
highlights of the year as well as give you the latest
news.
Firstly, I am delighted to announce that as a result
of merit selection we have a new Deputy Principal
who will be starting in the New Year. Mr Nigel Wells
comes to us from Lake Munmorah High School. I
would like to thank Mr Vincent Jensen who has
done a splendid job as relieving Deputy Principal
this term. We also have a new Head Teacher
PDHPE, Mrs Deborah Cougle, from Callahan College
Waratah Campus. Early in the New Year I plan to
have an afternoon tea for parents to meet the new
staff so I really hope you can join us.
I would also like to congratulate both Mrs Melinda
Atkinson and Mrs Lisa Hall who have been
successful in appointment to the campus as
permanent staff members. We are very fortunate
to have a dedicated and committed staff.
It has been a delight to meet with high performing
students throughout the year at the Principal's
morning tea. This gives me a great opportunity to
talk with the students as well as acknowledge their
impressive work.
I have also enjoyed the focus group discussions
where Ms Jones and I discuss the approaches to

learning that are happening in the campus. This has
been a very powerful way of considering the best
approaches to improved learning for all students.
Our school has a very keen focus on citizenship and
service learning. There are a number of programs
where the students are demonstrating strong
involvement in school community programs and I
would like to share a few of those with you. The
Year 9 and 10 students who act as reader writers
for exams, the Year 10 reading tutors, students like
Tayla Leung and Olivia Snow who have cooked and
served for the Principal’s morning tea, the Year 10
Meals on Wheels volunteers, the Year 8 graffiti
busters team, the special education students who
prepare and serve the surprise café the students
who helped make the Year 10 garden with Mr
Smith, students who help teachers get equipment
for classes and help clean up, the backstage crew
who prepare for assemblies, students like Lucy
Arellano, Lily Gibson, Callum and Jordan Berry and
our dance groups who give their time and talent to
entertain us at assemblies.
A key feature of the campus this year has been our
focus on development of teaching programs to
meet the needs of the adolescent learner. Teachers
have worked on lesson studies, learning projects,
attended sessions delivered by psychologist, Dr
Natalie Green to refine and develop their skills. This
work was showcased at the mid year visit by the
Regional Deputy Director of Education and north
coast principals who praised the innovative
approaches to education in the campus.
Another highlight of the year was the Tuncurry
Campus Naidoc celebration an assembly shared
with parents and community members. We were
treated to a feast of Aboriginal dances from both
the boys and girls dance groups, Year 7 Aboriginal
students’ profiles were introduced and Naidoc
awards presented. A key moment in the assembly
was the guest speaker, Aaron Ping, who focused on
the importance of the adolescent years and the
importance of making the right choices. I would like
to thank Mrs Ballard and Karen Pol who worked so
hard to coordinate the assembly and Elana Leung
and Aboriginal SLSO, Josh Hall for their
contribution.
I am very proud of our many academic, sporting
and citizenship achievements. I look forward to
continuing to work in partnership with parents and
community to make this school a strong, successful
learning environment in 2013. In the meantime, I
wish you all a very merry Christmas and happy new
year. Enjoy a safe and happy holiday season with
friends and family.

Deputy Principal’s Report
Dear Parents & Caregivers
As we start to look forward to the holidays, I’d like
to give a few reminders for the end of year period.
The school year finishes for all students on
Wednesday 19th December – this includes Year 10.
As you would imagine, our expectations for
students around attendance, behaviour and safety
remain the same as throughout the rest of the year.
We hope to have a settled and positive finish to our
school year.
Our Year 10 students will have their Graduation
Assembly on Thursday 13th December starting at
12 noon. This will be preceded the week before by
the invitation only Year 10 Dinner on Thursday 6th
December. I’d like to wish our Year 10 students all
the best for their future endeavours, whether they
be in further study or employment.
Some other important dates on our calendar
include our Tuncurry Campus Merit Assembly on
Monday 16th December, starting at 10am and the
College Presentation Night on Tuesday 17th

December, starting at 7pm at the Forster Campus
MPH. These events celebrate the academic,
sporting, cultural and citizenship achievements of
our students, and I’m looking forward to seeing
many parents attend to help celebrate the
successes of their children.
Our various year groups will also have end‐of‐year
excursions organised by their Year Advisors. These
excursions are invitation only events, rewarding
students who have consistently adhered to our
Core Values, as reflected in their RAP scores.
Students who are eligible to attend have been given
permission notes and information and should have
already paid the excursion fee at the front office. I
would like to take this opportunity to thank our
Year Advisors: Mrs Gemma Lawton (Year 7); Ms
Melissa Laurantus (Year 8); Mrs Melinda Atkinson
(Year 9); and Mrs Sharynne Donnegan (Year 10) for
their hard work, often going above and beyond,
supporting the students in their care across the
year.
As you may be aware, I will be finishing in the
position of Relieving Deputy Principal at the end of
this year, when I will be returning to my substantive
position of Head Teacher College. I have thoroughly
enjoyed my time at Tuncurry Campus and I’d like to
thank Principal, Mrs Veronica Amato and the
students, staff and parents of Tuncurry for
supporting me in my role.
I hope you enjoy a safe and relaxing holiday.
I would like to thank the students, staff and parents
of Tuncurry Campus for their support.

Planning Day
The SRC had their annual planning day. We started
off by writing down 5 things we have done in the
SRC. Next we got a booklet full of leadership tips,
positive attitude towards work and played some
fun “teamwork” activities.
Then we started looking into charities that we are
going to support. Some of the many charities we
are going to support include: Jeans for Genes day,
Homebase, OZ harvest and the local animal league.
We supported: local, national, international and
environmental charities.
We also are going to help the school with the girls’
and boys’ bathrooms and after that we organised
how we are going to make the money to support
these charities. We are going to do mufti days, bake
sales, milkshake days and many other fun activities
to support these charities.
Next, we organised Tuntastic day and came up with
some super fun activities. Throughout the day we
were provided with amazing food from Belinda and
the canteen team. The SRC are now fully prepared
for 2013!

better) than anything you’d see on TV. Big hits, high
flying in the lineouts, long kicks, powerful rucking
and a confidence to run the ball (Mr Deans??) were
all on display. 1 point went to Andrew Fisher, 2
points to Peter Segol and 3 points and man of the
match to Darcy Hale.
Pleasingly, all our boys conducted themselves like
gentleman, had lots of fun, played hard and fair and
came away with no injuries. The biggest thank you
of the day goes to Wayne Barry for organising
everything, in what may well be his swansong from
Great Lakes College. Thanks Wayne.

Fascinating & Inspiring Trying to captivate and motivate a hall full of
teenagers seems like an impossible task ‐ not for
Sam Cawthorn though. Our brilliant guest speaker is
not only an inspiration to all our students; the story
of his survival is also remarkable.
On Friday 30th November Homebase Youth Service
and the school’s welfare team arranged Sam
Cawthorn’s second visit for 2012. Sam’s miraculous
survival from a car crash is fascinating enough. He
was able to talk openly about his rehabilitation and
prosthetic arm. His comeback to full function and
his rise to Young Australian of the Year were great
stories. Sam spoke about his charity work in India,
youth work throughout Australia and numerous
other inspirational people he knows.
Sam’s focus turned to the students and the choices
they make. They need to focus on positives and
that it is their decisions not condition that
determines how their lives will play out. Sam spoke
about how all of us are the product of our five
closest friends, and challenged the students to re‐
consider who they choose to hang out with.
Focusing on positives saw Sam play his guitar with
one arm and lead the entire school in his song “I am
blessed” that is about concentrating on positives.
Sam Cawthorn’s two visits to Tuncurry Campus in
2012 have been great successes, leaving everyone
with plenty to think about and be inspired by. Let’s
hope we see Sam back here in 2013. A huge thanks
must go to Kylie Honor and Homebase Youth
Services for arranging Sam’s visit to our school.

PDHPE Faculty Highlights 2012
December brings to close a very busy year in the
PDHPE faculty. Throughout the year students have
dealt with many and varied issues that relate
directly to the development of adolescents. Issues
that involve aspect of not only physical health but
also equally important aspect of social, emotional,
mental and spiritual health. This stage of
development is a time of great change and students
need to understand why they are feeling the way
that they do. Diverse topics covering fitness,
relationships, physical changes in the body,
reduction of harm, sexual health, and Drug use are
just some of the areas addressed.
In the Physical Education component of the course
a huge variety of physical contexts were addressed.
Fitness testing, Dance, Flyballe, Athletics, Touch, Oz
Tag, Softball were some of the activities covered. A
particularly successful unit of work is the Sport
Education unit undertaken by year 10 students. This
unit introduces students to the concepts involved in
running their own sporting competition and all of
the processes that happen behind the scene.
Next year will bring some change to the PDHPE
faculty with the retirement of Mr Wayne Barry.
Wayne has had a long and distinguished career
teaching at a number of schools including Findley,
Taree, Bulahdelah and Great Lakes College. We
wish him all the best in a well earned retirement.
Gary Martin who has being covering the role of
Head Teacher PDHPE at Tuncurry campus will now
be wholly involved with the senior campus. His
replacement will be Mrs Deborah Cougle from
Waratah High.

English/History Faculty Highlights 2012 During the year we have had a number of
interesting and successful programs that celebrate
student achievement. Our Public Speaking
Competition this year showcased a number of
talented speakers whose topics were varied and at
times, thought provoking. The Year 9 NAPLAN
results show above state average growth and
reached the DEC state averages, which was a
fantastic achievement. Of course this could not
have been achieved without the support of all staff
in this campus. Several of our Year 9 students who
entered the Write for Fun Poetry Competition were
selected to have their poems published. Our Year
10 1960s Day was a fun event where students
dressed up in the fashions of the decade and
performed songs and dances typical of that era.
Many have remarked that this helped them to
understand the social context of how people lived.
Overall our faculty has enjoyed a most successful
year and we thank parents and carers for
supporting their child’s learning.

Welfare Highlights 2012
2012 saw our regular Welfare programs run‐
Rainbow Day/Boys to Men for Year 7 students, Art
Heart, Seasons for Growth, Love Bites, Rage
program for boys and girls, and Stewart House.
Our first Year 9 day was held in September this
year. Boys from Year 9 remained at school while the
girls spent the day at the Blackhead SLS club. Quest
speakers and facilitators worked with our students
to promote positive self‐esteem and the
development of healthy relationships.
The Green Bikes program ran during term 4. This
worthwhile program was organised by Homebase
Youth Services. Green Bikes is a program where
students work on rebuilding, repairing and restoring
old bikes to new and useable bikes. The four Year 8

boys who attended this program developed
valuable skills and increased confidence.
Students from 7‐10 completed an Anti‐Smoking
program during roll call in term 4. The program
aimed to improve student’s understanding of the
negative health effects of smoking and how
dependence on nicotine can develop.
Sam Cawthorn visited our school during terms 1 &
4. Sam is an inspirational speaker who challenged
our students to focus on positives in life. He
stressed that it is our decisions not condition that
determines how their lives will play out. Sam also
spoke about how all of us are the product of our
five closest friends, and challenged the students to
re‐consider who they choose to hang out with.

Maths/Geography Faculty Highlights 2012
The Mathematics faculty is pleased to report that
Tuncurry Campus entered 109 students in this
year’s 35th Annual Mathematics Competition. 80%
of the students achieved a Proficiency award or
higher. Justin Hassett achieved in the top 11% with
a Distinction and David Sweeney placed in the top
1% with High Distinction.
2012 saw the first Aboriginal Numeracy
Competition take place to improve the
performance of Aboriginal students in the Great
Lakes region. Mr Ruff and Ms Elliott were involved
in running problem solving activities in the
competitions this year. The events were considered
a great success.

Science Faculty Highlights 2012
It has been another exciting year in the Science
faculty with many interesting activities taking place.
Some highlights of 2012 include:
Year eight students had a great time on their
Astronomy excursion to the Sydney Observatory.
They also enjoyed joining city workers for their
lunch time boot camps and Mr Beavis’ double time
marches through the city.
Marine Studies: Mr Webb has guided a number of
year 10 students to their SCUBA license through
Action Divers. They also enjoyed a tour of Wallis
Lake on the Free Spirit (see photo). The year nines
are looking forward to their snorkelling trip to Seal
Rocks.
Mr Beavis’ Bridge building competition: During their
Forces topic year eight students were challenged to
construct a bridge out of straws to carry the
maximum weight possible. In teams the students
researched design and construction principles and
implemented them into their own unique designs.
Mrs Horne brought ICT skills into focus by
experimenting with innovative presentation
techniques for the students to display their Work.
Mr Ceccato led a group of 50 GATS students
through a CSIRO workshop on Global Warming.
They enjoyed using specialist equipment and
participating in hands‐on practical tasks.

CAPA Faculty Highlights 2012
The CAPA Faculty at Tuncurry Campus has had
another big year. A number of Rock bands
competed at the Annual Taree Eisteddfod in term 1
which was a great experience for them to perform
at the Manning Entertainment Centre.

An Education Week concert at Stocklands Forster
featured performers from all three Campuses to
very receptive shoppers and supportive friends.
Many of the Tuncurry and Senior Campus students
performed in items and the Combined Band at the
biennial “Shine On” Concert in September at Club
Forster, which is a showcase of talent in Music,
Dance and Drama from DEC Great Lakes Learning
Community Schools. The annual MADD Concert
featuring students from all three Campuses was
presented at Forster Campus in October to an
overwhelming crowd. The Art Exhibitions for the
MADD event will be open in December to coincide
with the Merit Assemblies so that parents and
caregivers can view their students’ works when
they visit the Campuses. Regularly students’
artworks are featured on the Work on Walls in the
C block corridor. At the moment the Year 8 Visual
Arts Customisation Projects are on display as shown
below.
The College Band has had another busy year, also
competing at the Annual Taree Eisteddfod and
performing at all the Campus Merit and special
Assemblies throughout the year. Term 4 is the very
busiest time for the Band as they perform at the
Year 12 Graduation, Year 10 Graduations, each
Campus Merit assembly and Presentation Night.
Thank you to the parents and caregivers that
support their student to participate in the College
Band program.
Thank you to all the CAPA staff that have worked
extremely hard all year to deliver engaging and
relevant classroom lessons as well as supporting all
of the CAPA co curricular events.

Graffiti Busters 2012
The Graffiti Busters Team at Tuncurry Campus is
providing a community service to our school. With
the help of Ted Bickford and Mrs Ralston our team
consisting of Aaron Dodd, Bayley Dimarco, Bill
Delaney, Jacob Agnew, Jamie De Gioia, Ryan Cooke,
and Veronica Mesar have been busy with the clean‐
up process.
Our achievements to date include the repainting of
the boys’ and girls’ toilets and the beginning of the
clean‐up of the girls’ change rooms. This will take
some time but we hope to have it completed by the
end of 2012. It is also anticipated that we may be
able to repaint the boys’ change rooms as well this
year. Ted Bickford secured the funding for these
projects.
Ted has also bought the team a gurney through a
grant from Great Lakes Council to use to clean
graffiti off the walls.
Mrs Atkinson entered the team along with the
Meals on Wheels group into a competition called
“The World’s Biggest Classroom” based on our
volunteering. A poster of us is now at Circular Quay.
Jamie De Gioia and Veronica Mesar were
nominated by Ted Bickford and Mrs Ralston for the
Myall Lakes Community Awards‐ Young Person of
the Year. Both girls deserved the recognition for
their volunteering efforts with a number of groups
within the school and community.
The Graffiti Busters Team is a great community
service that each one of the team enjoys taking part
in and we look forward to a successful 2013.

SENIOR CAMPUS
As the calendar year 2012 draws to an end it is
important to acknowledge that the HSC year for
Year 12 2013 has already started, with the
upcoming Christmas break an excellent opportunity
for students to make progress with assessments,
major works/performances, homework and
revision. A large proportion of the 70,000 HSC
students in NSW will be using this break time
constructively to set themselves up for success in
2013. While each student is different we know that
those that commit regular time each week of the
break, say 15 hours each week, will be well
positioned for what is always a very busy year.
Much has been achieved in 2012 as our campus
continues to grow and strengthen the education we
provide to young adults. Evidence of our success
can be seen in many ways. The keenness of other
schools on the North Coast to visit our campus –
teams from 6 schools this year ‐ to learn from the
work we are doing is testament to this success. Our
ongoing work with the ALARM (A Learning and
Responding Matrix) as a teaching and learning
framework for students has seen the teachers of
our campus perceived as leaders in using this
scaffold with students for improved learning.
Our HSC results for 2011 placed us amongst the
very best performers on the North Coast and across
NSW, and we are waiting expectantly for similar
success for our students in this year’s HSC – we’ll
know on December 19! Irrespective of these
results, these students have left us an enduring
memory of happy, well balanced young adults
determined to go on and make significant
contributions to our community. It was wonderful
to see them formally recognised for their
achievements at the Year 12 Graduation and to
celebrate this in such a wonderful fashion at the
formal at Tuncurry Bowling Club. My
congratulations to the team, led by Tania Morton
(Year Adviser) and Christine Lutwyche (Year 12
student), for organising such a wonderful event. I
must also acknowledge the work of Sue Morrell in
stepping in to organise the Graduation. Sue
oversaw what is genuinely a whole campus effort –
teachers, administration staff and groundsmen – all
pulling together to make the Graduation an event
the students and parents will remember always.
Our campus in 2012 has been characterised by
productive endeavour, great relationships between
students and staff, a strong focus on learning by all
campus members, and harmony. This is a great
recipe for success and a bright future for all. I look
forward to another year of equal success in 2013
and wish all of our community a Merry Christmas
and Happy New Year.
Best wishes,
Steve Nicholas Principal
Graduation Day and Formal Evening.
Family and friends, staff of the Great Lakes College
and official community guests came together on
Tuesday 13th to celebrate the graduation of the
class of 2012. The ceremony, with an audience of
over 1100, saw each student receive their official
portfolio as well as showcasing talent in music,
drama and dance.
The chairpersons for the ceremony were the new
college captains, Amelia Cross and Matthew
Thomas . After the national anthem led by Tegan
Long and Welcome to Country presented by Sian
Maidment, Principal of the Senior Campus, Mr
Stephen Nicholas, gave his address. This
acknowledged the wonderful achievements of Year
12, reflected on the character of the students and
encouraged them to live as active members of their
communities in the Asian Century rather then
merely exist within their community. “Life is not
about warming yourself by the fire, it’s about
building the fire ……. and generosity, effort and
passion are the matches,” he said.

The very close connection built up over the past
two years was evident in the speech from the year
advisers for this group, Ms Tania Morton and Mr
Greg Glanville. They took this as their last chance to
impart some words of wisdom in the form of
adages to live life by, for example, “knowledge is
power” and “you get out of life what you put into
it”. Their final piece of advice, “…. find something
you love and you may never work a day in your
life….” left a strong impression on the graduates.
Other speeches included a perspective from a
parent, Mr Tony Reed, whose son, Ben, is the last of
four children to graduate from the school. A
farewell from representatives of the incoming Year
12, Sophie Moulds and Penelope Robinson and a
reply on behalf of the outgoing Year 12 by Chelsea
Hope and Elizabeth Perkins completed the
acknowledgements.
Individual Portfolios of Achievement were
presented by the college executive, Mr Stephen
Nicholas, Mr Tony Koch, Mrs Veronica Amato and
Mrs Judy Hall as well as official guests, Mr Phil
Webster, former School Superintendent for the
Great Lakes and Mr Dennis Ang, former College
Principal, both attending to acknowledge the tenth
cohort to graduate from the College since its
inception.
Year 12 entertained exclusively with the music class
presenting, Scar Tissue by Red Hot Chilli Peppers
during the break in portfolio presentations.
Taleesha Easton performed her dance routine, Give
Me Love followed by Ashlee Cooke, Emily Farr,
Crystal Heavey and Jack Hibberd’s group‐devised
Drama performance, Phony 2012, both of which
received nominations from the HSC markers to
Callback and Onstage respectively. The lyrics to the
final Year 12 group song, We All Did This Together
were re‐written by Ben Reed to reflect their shared
experience and sense of belonging to each other
and their college.
After refreshments for graduates, family and guests
in the senior campus grounds, the formal dinner
and dance was held in the evening at the Tuncurry
Bowling Club. The graduates arrived by various
modes of transport (convertibles, utes, a tractor)
having transformed themselves into elegant and
sophisticated young adults. They were open in their
enjoyment of the whole evening, grouped with
their close friends during dinner and then dancing
enthusiastically together and celebrating with an
obvious sense of elation and freedom.

Aboriginal Numeracy Competition – Senior Division
Great Lakes College Senior Campus recently hosted
the inaugural Aboriginal Numeracy Competition

the hard work of activity presenters Dave
Fitzhardinge, Tim Meagher, Mario Schumacher and
many others who assisted in various ways leading
up to and on the day.

Remembrance Day Service
On the eleventh of the eleventh at 11 o’clock the
Year 11 Modern History class conducted a memorial
service for all soldiers killed in war since 1914. The
short service was held under the eucalypt trees in
the school grounds. The Forster Tuncurry RSL Sub‐
Branch kindly donated two hundred Red Flanders
poppies one for each student. These were set up in
the grass under the trees and the students picked
one up to hold during the ceremony. The students
have been studying aspects of World War I and
were able to include some of their ideas in the
service. The theme they chose was to explain why it
is called a Wold War and to outline the
participation and the suffering of all soldiers.
The ceremony was ably managed by Michael Avery,
Tanayah Tooze gave the address which explained
how so many countries were involved and Josh
Walpole explained origins of Remembrance Day
and the significance of the red poppies. The Poem
in Flanders fields by the Canadian Hugh McCrae was

read a translation of a poem by a German soldier
Anton Schnack. Eleanor Thomson gave Welcome to

Josh Walpole read the Ode and after the Last Post
the students observed a minute’s silence to
remember the soldiers’ sacrifice the Reveille
concluded the ceremony.
