A DECADE TO REMEMBERIn this 10th Anniversary edition of the magazine, we take a look back on our journey through the years. ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove, Singapore has come a long way since its beginnings. Today, we are recognised as a leader in the field, playing an instrumental role in the development of the yachting scene in Asia. With all that we have achieved since our inception, it is evident that we are truly living out our vision to be Asia’s Finest Marina and Leisure Hub. We have put together a timeline of all our triumphs and special moments. Turn to page 14 to walk down memory lane with us.

Looking forward to the years ahead, I am pleased to share that this is a significant time for the Club with much greater plans for the future. We are in the midst of adorning a string of pearls along the beautiful coastline of Asia, each pearl representing a world-class ONE°15 branded integrated marina with a myriad of lifestyle and retail choices. As a member of our flagship marina in Singapore, you will soon be able to enjoy benefits across all ONE°15 marinas around the world. Read more about this vision from our chat with Arthur Tay, Chairman of SUTL Group. The article can be found on page 19.

On a final note, I wish to express my deepest appreciation to our Members. Our success through the years is due in no small part to your steadfast support. We look forward to forging new memories with you and together, let’s continue growing from strength to strength in the years ahead.

ONE°15 may be marking a decade since its opening. But to the man behind it all, things are only just beginning. Reflecting on the years that have gone

by, Arthur says in a measured voice, “I would call this Chapter One of our story. We are blessed to reach this ten-year milestone. But there is more to learn in the years to come.”

His statement is despite the success that ONE°15 has proven to be. Amongst a growing list of accolades, the Club has won the award for Best Asian Marina at the Asia Boating Awards a grand total of six times. “But to be successful is a journey and not a destination. That’s what I always say,” he conveys.

So far, this journey to success has been filled with many defining moments for the Chairman. As he looks back at the Club’s early years, he is grateful for the opportunities to contribute to the boating scene in the region. “We made Singapore the first Southeast Asian stop in the Volvo Ocean Race back in 2009,” Arthur reminisces. “Since then, we have hosted many international events that have placed us on the map, like the Singapore Yacht Show.”

Arthur’s energy and enthusiasm through the years is commendable, and it all stems from a simple source – passion. “I have always been an outdoor person with a love for the sea,” he shares. In 2015, he led SUTL Group to new heights by listing its marina-related businesses on the Singapore Stock Exchange under SUTL Enterprise, a 54%-owned subsidiary of SUTL Group.

Now, he is taking his vision to new heights. That vision is to build a string of connected ONE°15 branded marinas all across Asia. In doing so, it is Arthur’s hope that the yachting industry on this side of the world will equal, if not rival, the industry in Europe and the Americas. “It is our time,” Arthur says simply. “There is so much opportunity to develop this industry here. We are only at the tip of the iceberg and I want the industry to know that an Asian entrepreneur is ready to take the lead.”

In recent years, Arthur’s vision has started to take form. Aside from the flagship marina here at Sentosa Cove, ONE°15 is managing marina projects in nearby countries like Malaysia, China and Indonesia, and even as far away as New York. More projects are underway. “If I have my way, in the next ten years you will see a lot of ONE°15 marinas in Asia and the world. Some will be property based, some will be coastal marinas, others will be lake marinas. There are no limits to what we can build,” Arthur reveals.

Still, the Chairman acknowledges that the road ahead will not be easy. Strict cruising regulations in some countries

are hindering the creation of a friendly leisure boating environment. But Arthur is not one to back down from a challenge. “I founded the Singapore Superyacht Association as a platform for us to share, discuss and lobby for changes with key players in the industry. Convincing different governments and regulators has been a long process,” he shares. “But if we are patient in engaging them, things will change in time to come.”

With a host of marinas bearing the ONE°15 brand in the making, we wonder – how will these marinas compare to some of the world’s most renowned? “To build a successful marina, the first thing we need to have is a superior location. Second is quality infrastructure. But each marina also needs to have its own personality,” Arthur stresses.

P R O F I L E

One way that Arthur hopes to inject this unique flavour is to bring a sense of Asian hospitality into all his marinas. “As you know, Asian hospitality is the best,” he says. Citing an example, he continues, “We will be sensitive to all our customers needs. If you speak Mandarin, we will have people who can speak Mandarin. Or if you speak Bahasa, we will have people who can speak Bahasa. And of course, we will have great food. Good food is at the heart of a great experience.”

Members of ONE°15’s flagship marina in Singapore will soon be able to leverage on their membership for access to the other marinas. “We will provide different facilities that will attract them to visit. Besides that, we are also looking at ways we can create a ONE°15 family that our Members will be proud to be a part of,” he says.

As he takes the ONE°15 brand global, Arthur also sees it as a way of doing his part in nation building. “When we achieve our goal for the industry, we want people to know that a Singaporean company and a Singaporean brand spurred this transformation. We hope Singaporeans can take pride in our success as well,” he says.

The Chairman’s future plans may sound like a monumental task to some, but the visionary entrepreneur is simply shrugging off his detractors. “Some people take my vision lightly. But that’s fine, there’s no need to pat me on the shoulder,” he says. “It is in my nature to keep pushing forward. And I am certain that under my leadership, my team and I will grow this industry to an escalated level,” he says with an assured smile.

“I want to thank all our Members for their support. These ten years have been an enjoyable journey. There are more plans ahead and we will do our best to add on to our success in the next ten years to come.” - A R T H U R T A Y ,

CRUISING TO SUCCESS

Daniel Chui is a recognised name in the Asia Pacific cruise industry. The pioneer Member of ONE°15 chats with Longitude about his career journey, and what it's like to have a front seat in witnessing the Club's growth.

2 2 º

L O N G I T U D EC L U B B U Z Z P R O F I L E

T here’s no doubting the buzz surrounding the cruise industry today. The industry currently stands as one of the fastest growing categories in Asia-Pacific’s leisure

market. And in the thick of it all is Daniel Chui, Chief Executive Officer of Oceanic Group.

Interestingly, the industry veteran describes his foray into the cruise line as an “accidental stumbling”. “In life, you either plan for something, or you go into something unplanned and you learn to love it along the way,” he says. “I love what I do, so a job became a career and a career became a business.”

Daniel explains that his first job was as a copywriter. After realising that copywriting wasn't for him, he started working at an LPG company. "At that point of time our company had ties with the cruise industry so that was how I learnt," he shares.

Daniel eventually moved on to become the Managing Director of several ship management companies, but a defining point in his career came when he decided to strike out on his own. He describes having had a gut feeling, or in his own words, “a feeling in your bones”, that the industry would experience a boom in the Asia-Pacific region. So together with his wife, Hwee Cheng, they set up Oceanic Group. “I took a leap of faith, but she took a huge jump because at that time we were newlyweds,” Daniel recalls. As it turned out, not only was his gut feeling right, the couple also made a great team.

“Setting up a new company always comes with challenges. But we took them as they came and worked together to resolve them,” shares Hwee Cheng as Daniel adds, “I am blessed to have a very patient and understanding wife by my side.” Hwee Cheng remained involved in the business before resigning to look after their 11-year-old son, Domique.

Today, Oceanic Group stands as one of Asia’s leading ship management companies. More exciting times are ahead – in 2018, Oceanic Group will be introducing a new cruise concept to the market. Details are kept confidential for now but Daniel gives a little teaser, “At Oceanic Group, we don’t aspire to have the biggest ships in the market. Because any another company can build a bigger ship and when it does, you lose your USP. Our new concept launching in 2018 is not based on size.”

As Daniel speaks, there’s a twinkle is his eye as he shares his passion for cruising. “Cruise ships can bring you to places where cars and other land vehicles cannot,” he says. “Take for example Milford Sound in New Zealand. The ship can bring you so close to the fiord that you can literally hear the sounds of nature!” he adds.

For someone with an affinity to the sea, a membership with ONE°15 is only natural. When asked how long Daniel and his family have been Members of ONE°15, he says proudly, “Oh, from the start! I am one of the pioneer Members of the Club.”

Daniel visits the Club frequently, often bringing his clients to dine at LATITUDE Bistro and WOK°15 Kitchen. “I must say the Club is very well-run,” he praises. “It also caters to Members’ interests. The team at ONE°15 have organised offsite events like the recent collaborations with luxury brands. Those are quite enjoyable,” he adds.

As a family, the three have also forged some unforgettable memories at ONE°15. Hwee Cheng recently organised a surprise 50th birthday party for Daniel at Bar Nebula. From time to time, Sunday family lunch is held at ONE°15. "We really like the casual atmosphere and the seamless experience here," Hwee Cheng says.

Domique looks up from his book and quips, “My favourite part of the Club is the Infinity Pool!” “After lunch he sometimes goes for a swim,” his father elaborates. “Or sometimes we take a stroll along the boardwalk,” Hwee Cheng adds.

As he looks back on his 10 years with ONE°15, Daniel says it has been heartwarming to see the Club grow from strength to strength. “Moving forward, my wish for ONE°15 is for it to further expand its footprint all over the world so as Members, we can go anywhere in the world and find a home away from home,” he shares. “It is always exciting for Members to participate in the Club’s growth. So keep going, we will always support you!” he encourages.

Priceless Posessions

THE POPULARITY OF GEMSTONES HAS WITHSTOOD THE PASSAGE OF TIME. ON THE CLUB'S 10TH DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY, WE DISCOVER THE REASONS BEHIND THEIR IMMENSE APPEAL FROM

LOKE HUIYING AND TAY KUNMING, FOUNDERS OF SINGAPORE'S THE GEM MUSEUM.

3 2 º

L O N G I T U D EL U X E L I F E

N ature has a knack of producing beautiful things. Some of these beautiful things are gems – formed on the mantle of the Earth, extracted through

numerous means then cut and polished to form exquisite jewellery. With their infatuating sparkle and incredible lustre, gems are truly nothing short of mesmerising.

AN ENDURING APPEAL This fascination with gemstones is not a modern day phenomenon. In fact, gemstones have been widely coveted for hundreds of years, adorned by some of the world’s wealthiest and most important people.

“Royal families have been collecting gemstone jewellery since the early centuries,” Huiying shares with us. “Take for example the royals of Britain, or the maharajas and warriors of India. Because the upper echelons of society hold gemstones in such high regard, others began to treasure them in the same way. It is a tradition that has continued,” she explains.

Today, individuals may have their own reasons for acquiring a gemstone. But it is still primarily its aesthetic value that makes it such a desirable possession. As Huiying puts it, “You don’t get to see a lot of beautiful things often.” So if you possess a gemstone, you are holding a rare piece of earth’s natural wonder in the palm of your hands.

A FASCINATING HOBBY Hunting for the world’s most beautiful stones has a special thrill that attracts a group of passionate people – gemstone collectors. Kunming, a certified gemologist, diamond grader and gem dealer, likens collecting gemstones to buying a piece of painting. At first glance, one’s watch, car or apparel tells us a lot about his wealth or social status. But when it comes to his art collection, there is more than what meets the eye.

“Behind every art purchase, is a long research process. The collector would have studied the painter, his style, the meaning behind the painting and understood the rationale for its hefty price tag,” Kunming elaborates. “Similar to procuring gemstones, each collector undergoes a studious decision-making process before settling on a final conclusion,” he continues.

The entire pipeline from when a stone is mined to when it enters the market is a lengthy one, giving each stone a wonderful story of its own. Amongst the many things a collector would have to consider are the origins of the stone, its extraction process, how the gem is cut and many more. Plus, with such a wide assortment of gemstones in the world, there is just so many to choose from. Collectors can pick from vivid and bright coloured stones like rubies and emeralds. Then there are deep coloured ones like black opals and black diamonds.

S E P – O C T 2 0 1 7

3 3 º

L U X E L I F E

Some even change colour under different lighting, like the dazzling, and incredibly rare Alexandrite stone. Each have their own unique characteristics, so how do collectors determine what constitutes as “the best” to add to their collection?

This process is actually pretty complicated. “It is hard to put a standard on gems. That’s also one of the reasons why they are so alluring,” Huiying reveals. Agreeing, Kunming adds, “Even for gem graders the process is a prolonged and difficult one. When we grade a gem, there is no A+B=C formula.” Hence, this opens up room for collectors to enjoy invigorating discussions with one another, sometimes with a glass of whisky in hand. Removing a stone from its package, studying it intently and sharing your thoughts with a fellow collector is always exciting.

A WORTHY INVESTMENTSince gemstones can fetch pretty high prices, it is only natural to desire some handsome returns from a purchase. Diamonds have long been known as good investment propositions. More recently, coloured gemstones have also been making a stir in the market. At an auction in Geneva back in 2015, a 25.59 carat Burmese ruby sold for a whopping USD$30 million.

But Huiying and Kunming advice caution when it comes to investment. “You cannot look at gemstones the same way you look at stocks and shares,” Kunming says. “They are beautiful things and beauty is subjective. The moment something is dependent on beauty, it can either fetch very high prices, or very low prices.” Likewise with gemstones, beauty is in the eye of the beholder – some may share the same sentiments as you while others may not.

Nonetheless, yielding monetary return is not the only way to look at investment value. “It depends on who you are. If you are a gem dealer, your purchase is definitely an investment because you are buying to sell. But for a collector or even a regular consumer, what you get back from buying is different. You may not make a profit, but you do gain joy and satisfaction. And that is still a worthy investment,” says Huiying.

GUIDE TO BUYING GEMSTONESPURCHASING GEMS OR GEMSTONE JEWELLERY IS A MAGICAL EXPERIENCE. STILL, THE PROCESS CAN BE OVERWHELMING AT TIMES. FOLLOW KUNMING AND HUIYING’S STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS TO GUIDE YOU ALONG.

STEP 1: PICK A COLOUR Gemstones come in a brilliant array of hues and shades. So when selecting a stone that best suits you, ask yourself which colours appeal to you the most. This will help you to streamline your options and speed up your search.

STEP 2: CHOOSE A TYPE Once you have chosen a colour, you can now move on to exploring the different types of gems in the market. For example, if you enjoy intense, vivid shades of red, you can start your search by looking at rubies, garnets, spinels or tourmalines. Or if you prefer shades of blue, you can choose from topaz, sapphire, aquamarine or agate.

3 4 º

L O N G I T U D EL U X E L I F E

STEP 3: KNOW YOUR BUDGETOn your quest for your ideal gem, it is important to not get too carried away. Determine the amount you are comfortable with spending and always keep your budget in mind. After all, it is better to save the disappointment of falling in love with an extraordinary gemstone only to discover that it is not within budget.

STEP 4: LOOK AT QUALITYTo ascertain the quality of your chosen gemstone, the 4Cs – cut, clarity, colour and carat – are a good starting point. However, it is also important to note that no natural stone is perfect. As Kunming reminds, “Nature doesn’t make things pure. So the clearer a stone, the more expensive it is.”

STEP 5: CHECK FOR AUTHENTICITY The final and most important step is to determine a gem’s authenticity. Take your time to look around for a reputable and trustworthy jeweller to buy from. Don’t hesitate to ask your jeweller for a certificate of authenticity before closing the deal. This may mean forking out a little bit more for your purchase, but the trade-off is a guaranteed peace of mind.

Mid-Autumn Indulgence

THERE’S NO MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL WITHOUT MOONCAKES. THEY’RE METICULOUSLY CRAFTED, DELECTABLE ON THE PALATE AND UNDENIABLY EXQUISITE. BUT THEY ARE ALSO MEANINGFUL.

(嫦娥). Though there are many variations to the story, it goes something like this:

An archer named Hou Yi saved Earth from 10 scorching suns when he shot nine of them down. For his heroic act, Hou Yi was given an elixir of immortality. He brought it home with the intention to share it with his beloved wife Chang'e. But as fate would have it, while Hou Yi was out hunting, one of Hou Yi’s associates, Feng Meng, broke into the house to demand for the elixir. Chang'e refused to surrender it and consumed the elixir instead. As a result, she flew up into the heavens and ended up on the moon. Missing his wife dearly, every 15th day of the 8th month on the Chinese lunar calendar, when the moon is shining its brightest, Hou Yi prepares a selection of cakes as a form of worship to the moon goddess.

I t’s the time of the year when the moon is at its brightest and fullest. This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival will fall on 4

October. And that means it’s time to indulge in the delicacy that characterises the festival – the mooncake.

Every year when Mid-Autumn rolls around, mooncakes are a common sight. They are sold everywhere, from bakeries to restaurants and even supermarkets. But how did the tradition of eating mooncakes come about? And what do they actually mean?

THE TALE OF CHANG'E There are many myths associated with mooncakes and the Mid-Autumn Festival, one of it being the story of the goddess Chang'e

L O N G I T U D E

3 6 º

F I N E F O O D

THE MOONCAKE SYMBOLISMBut of course, Chang'e's story is just a myth. Nonetheless, the mooncake still remains an important symbol in Chinese culture. For the Chinese, roundness symbolises completeness and togetherness. Hence when the full moon appears, aside from signaling the end of the autumn harvest, it also calls for the family to get together. Round mooncakes then complement the yearly gathering.

Symbolism aside, the delicacy makes for an incredibly delicious snack. Baked golden pastry crust envelopes a rich, thick filling. Although more traditional versions of the mooncake are made with red bean or lotus seed paste, modern creations have emerged with unique flavours like durian, matcha and even earl grey. A round salted egg yolk is usually placed in the centre of the mooncake to symbolise the full moon.

Because they are extremely sweet and rich, mooncakes are usually cut up into smaller wedges and shared with others. To balance out the sweetness of the cakes, many enjoy it along with a cup of Chinese tea.

THE GIFT OF PROSPERITYWith the evolution of time, the taste of the mooncake is not the only important aspect of the delicacy. Almost as important as the cakes themselves is the packaging. Mooncakes are usually packaged as a set of four in elegant and elaborate boxes, meant to be given as gifts to family, friends and business associates. In fact, at times, the packaging might even outshine the cakes. This gift giving tradition is an expression of wishes for good fortune, prosperity and harmony.

There’s no denying that this iconic treat is well loved by many, whether as a snack to indulge in or as a gift to be given away. Despite the fact that centuries have passed, the mooncake tradition still remains. And judging from their popularity today, mooncakes are here to stay, for many moons to come.
