    TOP ACHIEvEMENTS OF THE YEAR

    President Roquemore brought together a working group to develop an IVC statement on freedom of expression, civility, and mutual respect, as well as an IVC action plan beginning in 2012-2013 in support of freedom of expression, civility, and mutual respect.

    Irvine Valley College has now been designated as Military Friendly School, one of a prestigious list of 1,000 colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide. IVC received this distinction for being among the elite schools in the nation to offer military members, veterans, and military spouses the best education, value, and welcoming atmo-sphere. IVC is now listed in the Military Friendly Schools Guide and website, which helps veterans and military service members narrow their field and select the college that best meets their unique needs. In addition, IVC will have the ability to use the Military Friendly logo in its recruitment efforts. Veterans and service members value this identification, as it indicates that a designated school appreciates military experience. Veterans and service members have more than 7,000 schools nationwide to select from for an education; currently, only 1,000 schools have the Military Friendly endorsement.

    President Roquemore was elected to the Irvine Chamber Board of Directors for 2012-2013.

    TOP ACHIEvEMENTS OF THE YEAR

    The college signage project was completed this past February. This has been a long-needed project that will assist students locate classes and makes the campus a more user-friendly space.

    We now have a new space on campus, the Live Oak Terraces, which was completed in time to be used for the spring commence-ment ceremonies. This newly created outdoor space provides the campus an events and performance space for our future.

    New spaces were created for the Academic Senate and the veterans in the library. The Academic Senate now has a space where collegial interchanges may take place, and the Veterans have a temporary but much improved space to support their return to college.

    ADDITIONAl ACCOMPlISHMENTS

    The EOPS office has been moved to a new location after an extensive renovation of the space they moved into. New furnishings and the change of location should help serve our students in a more efficient way.

    The library received additional work in the form of a new law library area to support the paralegal program. New carpeting and furnishings dressed up the area for the program, thus enhancing student support.

    In B300, the languages lab finally became a reality with mainte-nance support.

    As a part of the long-term strategic plan to upgrade furniture throughout the campus, the Public Information directors suite was refurnished in an ergonomic manner.

    In A-100, the presidents suite was rebuilt and refurnished this past year. This project, along with an expansion of the conference room, completes the construction upgrades needed to support the administrative functions of the college.

    A great deal of effort has gone into the construction of the new Life Sciences Building. An additional capital project that we have spent a great deal of time finalizing is the Barranca entrance. The project will be started in the fall of 2012 but has required a great deal of effort to get ready to build.

    The facilities team continues to work on infrastructure projects, having completed a new gas line between Power House 1 (PH 1) and the Student Services Center. Another leg of that infrastructure upgrade was to run new service between PH 1 and PH 2, serving the B Quad area of the campus.

    At ATEP demolition continues with all structures now removed and a project being planned for this next year to finish the demolition by taking out roadways and removing old building slabs. Along the way we have retained raptor habitat and are in general trying to be good stewards of the area that has been entrusted to us to maintain.

    The Irvine Valley College Foundation reached a milestone with the second consecutive year of over one million in revenue, at $1,006,686. This was in spite of a challenging year without a director for three months, and a new director, Richard Morley, getting up to speed with the IVC donor base, our campus and the greater Irvine community. The chart at the right shows the distribution of the revenue in expenses including scholarships, PRO IVC project funding and other programs that the foundation funds back to Irvine Valley College. Fundraising expenses were below the nonprofit sector average at 13%, as were general overhead and operating costs at 16%.

    The IVC Foundation launched the second quarter with a Board of Governors retreat that resulted in a comprehensive strategic plan with goals and measurable objectives for growth and renewal. The overall goals of the Foundation are to:

    > Create a culture of philanthropy on campus and in our greater community.> Develop sound and efficient foundation infrastructure.> Develop a dynamic fundraising Board of Governors.> Increase revenue to support campus projects that enhance learning and student scholarships.

The IVC Foundation Board of Governors is truly grateful for the participation of IVC employees, friends and community partners states Julie Davis, IVC Foundation Board Chair. The Foundation has committed $75,000 in matching funds for 2012, and we hope to increase that each year with our new Foundation lead-ership. Foundation Director Richard Morley adds, IVCs PRO IVC is a shining star across the 112 California Community College Foundations. IVC is among an elite few campuses where the faculty, staff and administration are so involved in supporting Foundation efforts to this degree.

With lunch provided by Wahoos Fish Taco and gift bags with upscale gifts such as Oakley sunglasses and Volcom sports-wear, the golfers had a great day, and the event produced revenue of $31,195. A special thanks goes to Carol Tagayun, AT&T, Foundation Board of Governors member, who chaired the tourney and, with her committee, did an excellent job.

    Astounding Inventions. The 25th Anniversary Astounding Inventions saw a record attendance of over 2,600 people, with 465 astounding inventions created by K-8 Tustin Unified and Irvine Public School Districts on display at the Hart Gymnasium on Saturday, January 28, 2012. A special thanks goes out to all of the IVC faculty and departments who supported the Science Fair area. The School of Business Sciences developed a new Fast Track Certificate Program (FTCP) as part of our administrative assistant program for students who are interested in earning their administrative assistant certificate. The program (FTCP) will be instituted for the first time this fall. Students will be enrolled into the program as a cohort and will be en-couraged to complete the entire program as a cohort in just 16 weeks.

    > Students will be expected to commit to being on campus from 8:30 am to 3:30 p.m. each Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. On Friday, students will need to be on campus from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

    > A computer lab will be open for enrolled students from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The lab will have tutors available to help students complete homework assignments and enable students to practice skills required to earn the certificate. Classes will be offered from 11:00 a.m. 12:30 p.m.

    > Students will be required to take some classes in an online setting.

    PARAlEGAl PROGRAM

    One of our paralegal students, Udara Abeysekera, obtained her first-ever job in the legal field a few months ago. She applied for and was admitted to the IVC Honors Program. In addition, she interned this summer in the OC District Attorneys DNA unit.

    Another of our Paralegal students, Aduardo Nick Muzzi, will also be interning with the OC District Attorneys DNA unit. Several other students have interned at Legal Aid of Orange County. Additionally, the IVC paralegal program worked with the Legal Aid Wine Festival fundraiser held on May 6.

    The paralegal program is in the process of developing a community law library that will be open to local law firms in the South County as well as our paralegal students. We are working to bring local law firms onto the IVC campus for more interaction and job opportunities with our students.

    DANCE DEPARTMENT

    French dance exchange

    New Choreographic Landscape is a cultural and educational exchange project. It stems from the aspiration of two schools of dance to promote their programs and develop unique opportunities for intellectual and personal enrichment. It allows teachers and students alike to broaden their horizons and discover new potentials specific to the choreographic culture of each country, by:

    > Placing approximately 15 like-minded dance students, intermediate to advanced, ages 18 to 25, into an educational and staging (show) environment;

    > Discovering a specific and unique approach to dance in each country, resulting in educational enrichment for each school;

    > Promoting the exchange of choreographic repertoire specific to each school, and widening the artistic investigative field of both students and instructors;

    > Generating encounters between dancers, teachers and choreographers in each country;> Visiting cultural highlights as they relate to the choreographic culture of each country.

    Our first exchange took place June 9 through June 25, 2012 with IVC students dancing in Paris. We rehearsed at the Paris Opera School; saw Luc Pettons dancers move with live swans; did an improvisational performance with clowns; saw the Eiffel tower; checked out Philippe Descoufls repertoire; danced; performed twice; and walked, walked, walked. And, yes: we did some shopping too.

    Our French counterparts have just arrived, and we hope to give them the time of their lives!

    vendetta matthea, guest artist

    In the spring of 2011, IVC Dance invited the Vendetta Mathea Dance Company to our campus. The two-week residency included many master classes with Vendetta and her dancers and intensive rehearsals for the creation of a new dance, Water Soul. The resulting intense piece was premiered during the first half of our April 20 PERSPECTIVES concert. The company then performed Vendettas seminal work, HOMME/ANIMAL, for which it received a 10-minute standing ovation from our enthusiastic audience.

    student standouts

    Kelsie Koziol has been with the Performing Dance Ensemble for about two years and has grown tremendously in that time. She started to work as a professional dancer while finishing her studies and was recently asked to join Motion Tribe dance company in the spring of 2012, where she was featured in Marie de la Palmes Sacred Ritual duet with Ben Sayles, another alumni who has gone on to a career in the professional dance world. Kelsie met Vendetta Matheas dance company during a residency at IVC this last spring and was so taken with the work that she traveled to France in August for a two-week workshop at Vendettas school, La Manufacture in Aurillac, France.

    Passionate, smart and focused, Stephanie Lin just completed the AA degree in dance at IVC. She was one of the lucky Performing Dance Ensemble students who went to France this summer. Just before that, she auditioned for Backhausdance company and got an apprentices contract starting in the fall. Stephanie had already worked with Jennifer Backhaus in the spring of 2011, dancing the lead in her piece Vous. She has worked consistently to improve her skills and it has paid off. We are very proud of Stephanie and wish her all the best with Jenny Backhaus!

    THEATRE DEPARTMENT

    Fall 2011: The Department of Theatre opened its season with a delightful pro-duction of AnythingGoes. Directed and choreographed by Jay Williamson and conducted by Randall Woltz, AnythingGoes was a visual explosion of color, cos-tumes, and sets. Set designer Mike Collins created a three-level ship that the play was staged upon. Costumer Nancy Bracken fitted the sailors and seagoers with a wide array of colorful costumes. Jim Rynning was the lighting designer and Scott Grabau skillfully rendered the sound design for the piece. The audi-ences were thrilled by the light-hearted dancing and singing.

    Early October: Professor Scott Grabau worked with IVC technical theatre stu-dents to create a miniature lighting lab. This small-scale lighting lab is housed in the Department of Theatres Computer Design Lab and gives more students ready access to the creative process of lighting a stage set. This allows faculty and student lighting designers the opportunity of experimenting on lighting designs on a small-scale set. If they like what they have created, they then may translate their work to their Main Stage projects.

    December: Audiences viewed a student production of Neil Simons Rumors. Directed by student director Megan Weaver and designed by student designer Scott Johnson, Rumors played to sold-out audiences. This production was staged in the studio theatre and produced by IVC students who manned the deck in all areas of this production. Bravo, Brava to this wonderful student production team!

    Spring 2012: January found IVC theatre students auditioning for Cabaret and TheImportanceofBeingEarnest. Both shows had record turnouts for auditions, and when the dust settled, Cabaret had double cast its lead female role with two of IVCs up-and-coming stars, Ashley Nelson and Elizabeth Rodriguez. Cabaret opened in March and broke box office records. Earnest thrilled patrons with its edgy Avenue Q concept of adding large Muppet-like puppets to the first act of the play.

    summer 2012: During the summer semester, the Department of Theatre mounted a small musical revue in the new outdoor venue, the Live Oak Terraces. IVC Follies Under the Stars revue opened July 25, 2012.

    TOP ACHIEvEMENTS

    IVC Athletics created the first womens sport championship in the California Community Colleges in more than 20 years with womens sand volleyball. The brainchild of IVC instructor and head coach Tom Pestolesi, this major step in creating greater opportunity for women, gender equity, and Title IX compliance has changed the face of the entire states athletic programs. IVC is among only a handful of colleges nationwide that are in compliance with federal law on this subject.

    A record number 88 student athletes were named IVC Scholar-Athletes in 2011-12. By implementing methods recommended by the states Student Success Task Force, Athletics has increased team GPAs and scholar-athletes for five consecutive years. The student-athletes were honored at a luncheon in May.

    IVC Kinesiology created a statewide partnership among the California Community Colleges and the CSU chairs on transfers, degree completion, Transfer Model Curriculum, and an annual meeting to combine resources, information and advocacy for the discipline.

    ADDITIONAl ACCOMPlISHMENTS

    IVC School of Kinesiology, Health and Athletics led the state in the examination, recommendation, and potential adoption of new state education code on repeatability of courses in these areas of study. IVC led the effort of the California Com-munity College Physical Educators association (CCCPE) to write the proposals eventually adopted by the State Faculty Senates Fall Plenary, and likely the state Chancellors Office. It is important to note the role of IVC Music Professor Steve Rochford in this attempt, as his communication and work on this topic on behalf of music and the arts was of tre-mendous importance.

    Kevin Ringuette (Tesoro High School) of mens volleyball and Melanie Kasanchi (Northwood High School) of womens basketball were named the Orange Empire Conferences Char-acter Champion award winners for 2011-12. Since the award was created in 2010-11 at least one of IVC student-athletes has been recognized every year for their academic, athletic and community work, as well as their sportsmanship and personal character in competition among all nine colleges of the OEC. The two were also named IVCs scholar-athletes of the year.

    IVC Counseling and Athletics hosted the second NCAA eligibil-ity and compliance seminar for high school and community college counselors. Created and hosted by first-year Coun-selor Rebecca Groff, this series is the only one of its kind in California, and supplements other counseling events sponsored by the Counseling Department.

    The Fitness Professional Certificate was entirely revamped, creating an 18-unit program in which all courses are both CSU transferable and applicable to the IVC AA in Kinesiology.
