Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! We hope you had some wonderful time off with your children during our

long winter break. It is also our hope that the long break gave the flu virus time to leave our building.

With that said, please remember that effective January 5th

an email and/or phone call will be sent

to you prior to 11:00 any day your child is absent. Since this is being generated by the computer

mainframe, it is impossible to take out any child from the listing whose parent has already called into

the school. Therefore it is not necessary for you to call in the morning if your child is sick. Also, as

written in the August newsletter, the Code of Maryland requires every parent to send in a written

absence note on the first day the child returns. Emails are not acceptable. The notes need a parent’s

signature, date and reason for the absence.

We welcomed a few “new” staff members in December. Leah Daniels, daughter of former

special educator Tracey Daniels, was born December 11th

. Clara Poliszczuk, daughter of first grade

teacher Christine Poliszczuk, was born December 12th

. Also many of you might remember Mrs. Erin

Richmond who transferred to another school this year. She welcomed Lyle Richmond on December

7th

. We also welcome an official new staff member who started yesterday. Mrs. Gabrielle Ross is our

new part-time special educator. She is replacing Mrs. Daniels and will be here on Tuesdays, Thursdays,

and ½ day on Wednesdays.

At the same time we extend our deepest sympathies to Mrs. Leah Dickens, substitute para-

educator and Mrs. Carol Gosnell, Play Centers Director on the deaths of their mothers over the

holidays.

As we know winter has come with a vengeance. This is a reminder that teachers do take

students outside when the weather allows. Therefore it is very important that your child comes dressed

for the “outside.” If you are missing a special sweatshirt, glove, hat, etc., you might want to stop by the

Lost and Found, which is growing daily.

There are two more weeks remaining in the second term. If you would like to meet with your

child’s teacher, please request a conference. They strive to accommodate yours and their schedules.

Please note the following January calendar dates:

Monday, January 19 Martin Luther King’s Birthday Schools closed

Friday, January 23 End of the Second Marking Period Dismissal at 12:50

Monday, January 26 Professional Study Day Schools closed.

Finally, don’t forget: Jacksonville Elementary is part of the Hereford Weather Zone!

Go Ravens!

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Happy New Year, JES families and staff!

I hope everyone enjoyed the winter break and had a chance to rest and recharge for

2015! The PTA thanks this incredibly generous community – your donations made the

holidays bright for many local families. Alicia Matesa with PTA Outreach as well as Julie

Sullivan and Melissa Ducroix coordinated it all so well. This month, your BOOK

DONATIONS (gently used or new) will help Hawthorne ES and Ark Preschool students.

Also, Beans and Bread breakfasts (Jan. 28th) are especially appreciated in the cold

weather.

Please join us on February 6th (7-9pm at JES) for INTERNATIONAL NIGHT! This terrific

JES tradition, held once every two years, showcases the international connections of our

families and staff. Many countries are represented with tastings, displays, and activities,

while cultural entertainment fills the stage. Please contact chair Jassi Ahuja

([email protected]) if you’d like to help with a country display or in any other way.

This event is FREE TO ALL, thanks to your PTA donations.

Brrr…it’s cold outside…but JES hoodies and knit hats will keep you cozy. SPIRITWEAR

SALES continue, including sweatpants, tees, drawstring bags, yo-yos, and keychains – get

them while supplies last! Show your school spirit while helping the PTA fund great

programs for all at JES. Contact Kathryn Delahanty ([email protected]) and

Gail Overcash ([email protected]) with questions.

Send in all of your BOX TOPS, LABELS for Education, and TYSON Project A+ this month as

the annual top homeroom contest heats up and we receive essential funds. Enter our

Movie Ticket Prize Drawing by sending in the attached form with your Box Tops by Feb.

6th for a chance to win tickets.

Volunteers help our students soar – thank you for your service to JES and the PTA! The

new year is the perfect time to get involved or try something new. Many opportunities

are listed here and more can be found at JESPTA.org.

Our award-worthy teachers go above and beyond for JES! Your nomination would

mean so much to someone special. Nominations are due Jan. 23rd for Baltimore

County’s Awards for Excellence in Education (see forms at JESPTA.org). Also, the ABC2

News “Teachers are Heroes” monthly recognition is ongoing:

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AND APPRECIATED!

It’s the New Year…a great time to VOLUNTEER!

Your volunteer service at JES makes a world of difference to our students and staff – thank you!

RESOURCE ROOM VOLUNTEERS make copies, laminate, cut, staple and complete other jobs to support the

teachers at Jacksonville Elementary School. Timing is 9:30-11:00am or 1:30-3:00pm (often does not take the

whole time) each available day. Training available!

We’re especially in need of help for the second shift (12:30-2pm) during the winter months. This is the 2nd,

4th, and 5th grades. Although these are the older grades, the Cafeteria Aides still benefit from having at least

one extra hand during this time to assist in handing out utensils.

Look for the “brown bag” sent home on the day (Tuesday) before collection and take time with your child to

pack an extra breakfast to send into school on Wednesday for the homeless in Baltimore City! Please feel

free to send in as many breakfasts as you wish, especially during the cold winter months. Please label the

outside of the bag with the entree enclosed and encourage your child to draw a picture or write a note on the

morning of the collection.

Breakfasts will still be collected if school is delayed due to inclement weather. If school is closed, please send

the breakfast on the next day school is open.

Then treat yourself to some Domino’s and take the night off from cooking!

You may order for pick-up or delivery any time on Jan. 28th (lunch or dinner) and Domino’s of Jacksonville will

donate 20% of the proceeds to JES PTA. Fill out the bottom portion of the JES Pizza Night form (sent home the
