S u m m a r y

Condi t ions on a l inear a lgebraic e igenva lue p rob lem are given, under which the re are exac t ly k -- 1 changes of sign in the sequence of componen t s of the k-th e igenvector . This is analogous to the osci l la t ion theo rems of d i f ferent ia l equat ions . A class of difference equa t ions which satisfies these condi t ions is defined. F ina l ly a mod i f i ca t ion of a m e t h o d of COLLaTZ is given, by means of Which upper and lower bounds for the k- th e igenva lue m a y be der ived f rom a t r ia l vec to r h a v i n g k -- I sign changes in t he sequence of its components .
