Kathleen Johnson Wright died May 9, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer. Kathleen (Kathy) was born August 10, 1944 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Lyall and Eleanor Johnson. The family eventually settled in Hamilton, Illinois, where Kathy graduated from Hamilton High School. She attended Cottey Women’s College in southwest Missouri before marrying and starting a family. After her children started school, Kathy spent 17 years in law enforcement. She began as a Records Clerk, working her way up to become the first female dispatcher for the Raytown, MO, Police Department. When she relocated to Phoenix, AZ, in 1979, she initially took a position in Parking Enforcement with the Tempe Police Department but undertook training and became their first female ID Tech (as in C.S.I.) in 1984. Returning to school in the late 1980s, Kathy obtained bachelor degrees in English and Chemistry from Arizona State University and a Masters in Education from NW Louisiana State. She left the

police department to follow her second love, teaching, and went on to teach both Chemistry and English for 15 years at Willcox High School in Willcox, AZ. After her retirement, she relocated to Kearny, AZ where she volunteered at the local library before discovering a third vocation – as a seasonal campground host for nearly 10 years in the Oak Creek Canyon area and her beloved Clear Creek in Camp Verde, AZ. Kathy is survived by her partner of 30 years, Richard Olejniczak; her children, Angela McGinnis and Shane McGinnis; grandchildren, Julia and Brett McGinnis; and her brothers, Jeff Johnson and Clark Johnson and their families. A celebration of Kathy’s life will be held in Phoenix on Wednesday, June 17, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Please email [email protected] for details and directions to the June 17 event.

This Saturday we get to celebrate the grand open of Norm’s Hometown IGA. It will be a great day, a real step forward for Kearny because Norm Warren

knows the real needs of the people in the Copper Basin. This same weekend the Town of Kearny is working to complete the financial survey we began earlier in the year. Town Manager Anna Flores and I will be staffing an information booth at Norm’s IGA this Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Friday, council members and Central Arizona Governments employees will be canvassing the remaining addresses. I have been asked to spell out why this survey is so critical for our town’s future. Most state and federal grants (including the one we are submitting now) are based on the town or city’s income level. That is usually determined by referring to the previous decennial census conducted by the Census Bureau. According to the 2010 census, Kearny is a moderate income town, but barely! The recession and a drop in population in Kearny took place after the census was taken. There is a provision for the results of a special survey to be taken, with the results being a legal substitute for the census figures. If the results of the survey confirm our rationale, Kearny is a low to moderate income town (low/mod in”grantspeak”).

Stop by Town’s Table at Grocery Grand Opening; Surveys Still Needed by Town

The grant we are seeking applies only to a low/mod town. The survey is the only way we have to see if we qualify for the grant. The survey is confidential. All we are seeking is a determination of Kearny’s economic status for grant purposes. On another note, we thank Stacy Johnson for supplying the Save the Kearny Pool shopping bags which are being sold for only $1.00 each with the proceeds going to the pool fund. The bright green bags are a reminder to all of us of how important our pool is. I have also been asked about ambulance costs. Whenever the ambulance is called to a home, it arrives with ambulance attendants who are trained and certified by the state. They are on call all the time. As a result, there is an ambulance fee whether or not the person is transported. If transport takes place, there are additional fees. The base call fee is $1,119. Medicare will not cover this fee unless the patient is transported. This makes you (or another insurer you may have) responsible for the fee. Yes, it is costly, but it makes our ambulance on-call service available to all of us when it is needed. Kearny is a notably cleaner and brighter town since the Journey for a Clean Kearny began. Now the places which still need improvement stand out all the more! Please pay attention to weeds and invasive plants. If your neighbor needs help, please lend a hand. Call Town Hall (363-5547) to report a place which needs attention. We want to help,

not issue citations, but citations will be issued if necessary, and follow-ups will be made. Finally, a special meeting of Town Council has been called for Monday, June 8, at 6 p.m. On the agenda so far: the possibility of beginning work on the town swimming pool and approval of a bid for work on the water treatment plant to eliminate particulates (other items may come up, and will be posted publicly).

A little known folk singer named Chris-tine Lavin once wrote a great variation to the traditional baseball song, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” In her version, she

urged everyone to “root, root, root for both teams; win or lose, lose or win we’re all the same.” That version best suits the game played

Friday night in Kearny. It was the Kids vs the Parents in this end of season tradition for the Kearny Little League.

Who won the game? Who cares! Everyone had a blast. What more could anyone want?

Resolution Copper to construct pump house as part of long-term water resource plan

Resolution Copper is proud to announce a contract awarded to Oddonetto Construction, a contractor from Globe, to begin development of a pump house on Resolution Copper property in Superior.

Construction will begin Monday, June 1 and will take place on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is expected to last until early August. Part of the company’s long-term water resource plan, the work will upgrade existing infrastructure that brings water from the Arizona Water Company and supplies to Resolution Copper’s current facilities. Resolution Copper is working closely with Oddonetto Construction to safely construct the pump house. During peak construction, the project will employ approximately 16 to 18 local workers from the local Copper Triangle area, including the San Carlos Apache Reservation.

“With everything we do, safety is our first priority, and we are committed to performing this work safely, efficiently and with the needs of the community in mind,” said project director Andrew Taplin. Residents who have questions about the construction work can call the Resolution Copper community line at 520.689.3409.
