I Hello Neerigen Brook Families and Community Members It’s been a busy few weeks at Neerigen Brook PS! Congratulations to our students who represented our school with pride at the recent interschool Winter Carnival. The students worked in teams and showed great sportsmanship while demonstrating their BEST in the sports of: soccer, football and netball. Thank you to all the teachers and parents who helped train the teams before the Carnival and to everyone who went along to support our students and school. Our Year 6 students thoroughly enjoyed their “high school experience” day at Armadale SHS last week. This opportunity was organised for all students, irrespective of which high school they’re planning on going to next year, to experience lessons with high school teachers. We’re incredibly fortunate to have close working relationships with both Armadale SHS and Cecil Andrews SHS (CASHS) which allow our children access to their great facilities. Our senior students will be visiting CASHS later in the year for another transition day where they will continue to learn about the exciting opportunities of being a “big kid” in high school. On one my favourite times of the term happened this week with our Brilliant Kids Morning Tea. I always enjoy sharing morning tea with our fabulous students who were chosen by their teachers for consistently showing their BEST. This BEST acronym refers to our positive behaviour expectations of Be Safe, Excel, Show Respect and Take Responsibility. During the morning tea, children were asked to share with the Executive Team what they like about the school and what suggestions they have to make it better. It’s always a privilege to hear the fantastic ideas our students have and I love sharing them with staff and then acting on some of their suggestions. Congratulations to everyone who was chosen for this special event. Our IPS Review report has arrived and has been added to the front page of our website. This report informs the direction of our future planning and will be discussed with staff on the School Development Days next term. During the IPS Review days, the reviewers spoke with a wide range of parents and students on multiple occasions including informally and through formal meetings. It’s pleasing that the reviewers reported positively throughout the report about parents’ perceptions of our school and our focus on improving student learning. The P&C were also mentioned within the report as actively supporting student activities and being represented on the Board. Huge thanks to everyone who shared their opinion with the independent reviewers. I’m pleased to announce that Jocelyn Magsaysay will be our new chaplain. Jocelyn will be commencing at Neerigen Brook next term. As we have only been able to access a chaplain for one day per week this semester, Jocelyn will be working at Neerigen Brook for three days per week for the rest of the school year. Jocelyn will be based in the PACMAN building so come along next term and say “hello”. Big thanks to Di Thoomes who has been juggling two jobs so that she could continue to support our students and school during the transition time. Mr Jeremy Bruse

I started teaching at Cecil Andrews Senior High School in 2004 after completing University in 2003. Initially employed as a maths teacher, I taught this and science for my first 5 years. After the implementation of the Specialist AFL Program in 2008 I transitioned across into the Health and Physical Education Learning Area where I currently still teach. During my 13 years at Cecil Andrews I have fulfilled a number of roles including Year Coordinator, Head of Department and Manager of Student Services. These roles along with my teacher role have allowed me to achieve some great success with a large number of students. I have been recognised for my work with the students, being named as the WA Secondary Teacher of the Year in 2013, the following year I was awarded an AFL School Ambassador of the Year award, the prize being a trip to the AFL Grand Final. In December 2014 I was nominated to become a Board Member of the TRBWA, a position a currently still hold, as one of only 6 teachers state-wide to sit on this board. Aside from teaching I spend considerable time working within the community, through my other passion of coaching. I am a development squad coach at East Fremantle Football Club and have also assisted at various clubs around the district. Having worked in the Armadale area for 12 years I have an understanding of how complex the lives can be for some students and understand the importance of providing a well-rounded education to these students. I look forward to working with the rest of the board members to provide this for them.

On Friday 10 of June, 18 year five and six students travelled to Westfield Primary School to compete against six other teams in soccer for the Inter School Winter Carnival. Our students had a tough competition against them for both A and B teams, and although they finished 6

th on the ladder they met this challenge

with great enthusiasm. Neerigen Brook primary School was well represented as they all demonstrated teamwork, respect and sportsmanship to each other, the opposing teams, volunteer umpires and organising officials. A large congratulations is extended to all the students, parents’ who helped with training and the carnival, and organising teachers. Two netball teams of year 4, 5 & 6 students competed in Netball at the DDSA Winter Carnival at Langford Park on Friday 10 June. Both teams played exceptionally well and showed great sportsmanship. Hayley was a star shooter on the day; Karma and Taessia were also stand out players. Thank you to the supportive parents who joined us on the day to ensure a great experience was had by all. Yesterday the students enjoyed a wonderful musical performance from Musica Viva called ‘Adam Hall and The Velvet Players’. This was a Jazz performance that let our students see and hear all the wonderful Jazz songs we have been learning about this semester. The students were able to interact with the musicians and play, sing and dance in a wonderful learning experience

A warm hello to you. I am definitely loving this rain. It’s the perfect weather to down tools on the weekend and curl up with a good book or watch a good movie with your children. The down side of this weather is the germs. Please remember to look after yourself and keep warm. In my travels I came across an article and it spoke to my heart. I would like to share it with you… Taken from a book called The Word for Today. “Some of the world’s greatest people have faced the world’s greatest challenges, but have overcome them. Cripple a man with polio, and you have Sir Walter Scott. Lock a man in prison, and you have John Bunyan. Raise a man in abject poverty, and you have Abraham Lincoln. Subject a man to bitter religious prejudice, and you have Benjamin Disraeli (British Prime Minister in the 19

th Century).

Strike a man down with paralysis, and you have Franklin Roosevelt. Have someone born black in a society filled with racial discrimination, and you have Booker T. Washington, Harriet Tubman, Marian Anderson and George Washington Carver. Make a man the first child to survive in an impoverished Italian family of 18, and you have Enrico Caruso. Have a man born to parents who survived a Nazi concentration camp, paralyse him from the waist down when he’s four years old, and you have the incomparable violinist Itzhak Perlman. Call a man a slow learner and mentally challenged, write him off as beyond education, and you have Albert Einstein. Helen Keller was born blind and deaf, yet she graduated from college with highest honours and impacted the world. Margaret Thatcher, England’s first and only woman Prime Minister, lived upstairs over her father’s grocery store. For a while her childhood home had no running water and no indoor plumbing. Golda Meir, Israel’s first and only woman Prime Minister was a divorced grandmother from Milwaukee. What do these people teach us? That success doesn’t depend on our circumstances, but on overcoming our circumstances”. All we need to do is change our perception, not let our circumstances have control over us and keep pushing through just as a seed needs to push through the soil to the light to grow. It’s not long now, and the students and staff get a well earnt break. I sincerely hope that along with them you are able to take some down time and grow some priceless and important memories with your children. Stay safe, stay well. With abundant blessings to you and your family.

This week we held our Brilliant Kids Morning Tea to celebrate and recognise students who consistently make positive choices. Two students from each class were selected by class teachers to attend the Brilliant Kids Morning Tea, which was hosted by Mrs Wescott, Mrs Instance and Miss Coen. In recognition of their consistent positive behaviour, the students enjoyed a delicious morning tea. Thank you to our wonderful canteen and P&C helpers for making a scrumptious selection of morning tea items for the event. During the morning tea, the students reflected on what they liked the most about Neerigen Brook Primary School and how we could make our school even better. Students shared that they liked Dojos and brain breaks, using computers and ipads, BEST tokens, fun Maths, when people are responsible at school and that when students show respect they get to participate in lots of fun things. Our brilliant kids also liked our nice helpful teachers and that when they say they will do something, the teachers follow through and do it. Our brilliant kids reported that to make our school even better it would be wonderful to introduce a language as a specialist subject, for everyone to be honest and follow instructions, reminders for students to pick up their rubbish and to introduce clubs at lunch times such as chess, reading and sports clubs. Thank you to our brilliant kids for their consistent positive behaviour and sharing their wonderful ideas and opinions. This valuable feedback has been shared with staff and we look forward to making our school even better.

This term Room 9 has been learning all about farms and farm animals. As part of our learning we visited Kelmscott Senior High School Farm last Friday 17 June. It was exciting to see a working farm and experience the different facets of farm life. Some highlights included the milking demonstration, holding animals and picking fruit. A huge thank you to all the wonderful parents who volunteered their time as the day would not have been possible without your help!
