When the Jackson Chamber held its B for Business event on Thursday January 11 the talk was all about Jackson Community leaders Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris City of Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist and chamber PresidentCEO Kyle Spurgeon were the featured speakers as they discussed ldquoBusiness Development Where are we now and where are we headingrdquo Mayor Harris opened up the B for Business event by addressing Madison Countyrsquos bud-get ldquoOur County budget for this year totals $179 million with the school budget being $122 million and the general fund budget at $57 millionrdquo Harris said ldquoOur per student expen-diture is $9726 which ranks 6th out of the 95 County systems and 18th out of 137 state systemsrdquo Along with the budget Harris also addressed the latest unemployment figures ldquoOur unemployment rate for January 2012 stood at 9 percentrdquo he said ldquoSince then our rate has bounced around up and down and hit 9 percent again in June 2012 But the latest figures we have are for November 2012 where our rate dropped by 72 percent The last time we were at this level was in November 2008 With this rate it looks like our job market has more stabilityrdquo For Harris he believes the future for JacksonMadison County looks bright ldquoOur unemployment rate seems to be heading in the right direction the sales tax base seems to have mostly rebounded some of our industries have announced expansions and adding jobs small businesses seem to have found a firmer footing building per-mits have picked up and we have new developments going on in Downtown Jackson The Columns and Pringles Parkrdquo Harris said ldquoSo I believe our community is positioned to have a good yearrdquo Mayor Gist addressed that Downtown Jackson is one of the top priorities for the new year ldquoA town is judged by its downtown areardquo Gist said ldquoOur downtown is going to change and it is already changing but we need help to grow the city We are adding upscale apartments and retail Downtown and it is going to be an amazing thing to seerdquo Gist emphasized that Jacksonians can help the city grow by stepping up and becoming cheerleaders for Jackson ldquoBy virtue of my position I am the head cheerleader for this cityrdquo Gist said ldquoBut I need some help on my cheerleading squad I need you all to help grow this city and make it betterrdquo Gist encouraged attendees to use any social media as their cheerleading platform ldquoAs you go on Facebook or any other social media say something good about your cityrdquo Gist said ldquoIf you happen to venture out and get a good video of Jackson put it on YouTuberdquo According to the chamber PresidentCEO Kyle Spurgeon the Jackson Chamber and other economic development officials will continue to work together with the surrounding counties cities and businesses ldquoWe are just as happy for Trenton (landing) MacLean Power Systems as if they were in Jacksonrdquo Spurgeon said ldquoI know it might be hard to believe that a chamber guy would say that but we kept those jobs in this region So you will continue to see us spending our time working with our surrounding communities to help them grow We have a chamber that is very well funded and a large staff so we have the capabilities to help our neighborsrdquo As for the city and county they vowed to attendees that they will work together to help JacksonMadison County thrive ldquoI know that Mayor Gist and I will do everything in our power to see that your local government is your partner not your enemyrdquo Harris said

Leadership Jackson Alumni Association Spotlight

Amy Griffin was raised in Milan Tennessee She attended and graduated from Milan High School and obtained her Bachelorrsquos Degree and Masterrsquos Degree in Business Administration from Union Uni-versity She also has her Executive Juris Doctor Degree with an emphasis in Health Law from Concord University School of Law Amy is a licensed Nursing Home Administrator and holds a certification in Healthcare Compliance She is recognized by the Health Ethics Trust as a Certified Compliance Executive She is very involved with the Tennessee Hospital Association Compliance Officerrsquos networking group and serves each year on the planning committee for the annual state compliance conference She also is a member of the West Tennessee Fraud Task Force sponsored by the US Attorneyrsquos Office for the Western District of Tennessee She is heavily involved in the community as a graduate of Leadership Jackson and is currently serv-ing on the Leadership Jackson Alumni Association Board as well as serving on the Exchange Club Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse Board the Jackson Chamber Board of Directors and is the 2013 Chair of the March of Dimes March for Babies She is currently serving as the Secretary of the

Crimestoppers Board She is a graduate of the WestStar Class of 2012 and is a Lifetime Member of the WestStar Alumni Association She is a member of the Jackson Exchange Club and the Rotary Club Amy began her career in healthcare as the controller for Camden General Hospital in 1998 and in 2002 became the administrator of the hospital In 2003 she became the Corporate Compliance Officer for West Tennessee Healthcare in which her primary responsi-bility is promoting an environment where there is honest ethical behavior in the day-to-day operations of the organization Amy lives in Jackson with her husband Greg They have two daughters Hannah 13 and Madeline 8

Chamber Connection What does your organization do that most people donrsquot know about Antoniarsquos Paw Spa We offer pick-up and drop-off services daycare and non-sedation dental cleaning clinics on a monthly basis Chamber Connection What are some recent successes your organization has experienced Antoniarsquos Paw Spa Our client base has more than quadrupled since our opening in June and is continuing to grow at an astounding rate Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine that the Paw Spa would so quickly become ldquoThe Premier Pet Salon amp Boutiquerdquo in Jackson known and appreci-ated throughout the greater West Tennessee area

Chamber Connection Do you have any community projects you are involved in Antoniarsquos Paw Spa We will be working with the Jackson-Madison County Humane Society in support of the ldquoFur Ballrdquo coming up on Saturday March 2 We are thrilled to be contributing our services to this event We participate in several events that support the Humane Society incliding ldquoPearls for Pawsrdquo and ldquoWhine and Dinerdquo We also take donations and sell t-shirts for them as well

Chamber Connection What does your organization do that most people donrsquot know about Antoniarsquos Paw Spa We offer pick-up and drop-off services daycare and non-sedation dental cleaning clinics on a monthly basis Chamber Connection What are some recent successes your organization has experienced Antoniarsquos Paw Spa Our client base has more than quadrupled since our opening in June and is continuing to grow at an astounding rate Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine that the Paw Spa would so quickly become ldquoThe Premier Pet Salon amp Boutiquerdquo in Jackson known and appreci-ated throughout the greater West Tennessee area

Chamber Connection Do you have any community projects you are involved in Antoniarsquos Paw Spa We will be working with the Jackson-Madison County Humane Society in support of the ldquoFur Ballrdquo coming up on Saturday March 2 We are thrilled to be contributing our services to this event We participate in several events that support the Humane Society incliding ldquoPearls for Pawsrdquo and ldquoWhine and Dinerdquo We also take donations and sell t-shirts for them as well

Amy Griffin was raised in Milan Tennessee She attended and graduated from Milan High School and obtained her Bachelorrsquos Degree and Masterrsquos Degree in Business Administration from Union Uni-versity She also has her Executive Juris Doctor Degree with an emphasis in Health Law from Concord University School of Law Amy is a licensed Nursing Home Administrator and holds a certification in Healthcare Compliance She is recognized by the Health Ethics Trust as a Certified Compliance Executive She is very involved with the Tennessee Hospital Association Compliance Officerrsquos networking group and serves each year on the planning committee for the annual state compliance conference She also is a member of the West Tennessee Fraud Task Force sponsored by the US Attorneyrsquos Office for the Western District of Tennessee She is heavily involved in the community as a graduate of Leadership Jackson and is currently serv-ing on the Leadership Jackson Alumni Association Board as well as serving on the Exchange Club Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse Board the Jackson Chamber Board of Directors and is the 2013 Chair of the March of Dimes March for Babies She is currently serving as the Secretary of the

Crimestoppers Board She is a graduate of the WestStar Class of 2012 and is a Lifetime Member of the WestStar Alumni Association She is a member of the Jackson Exchange Club and the Rotary Club Amy began her career in healthcare as the controller for Camden General Hospital in 1998 and in 2002 became the administrator of the hospital In 2003 she became the Corporate Compliance Officer for West Tennessee Healthcare in which her primary responsi-bility is promoting an environment where there is honest ethical behavior in the day-to-day operations of the organization Amy lives in Jackson with her husband Greg They have two daughters Hannah 13 and Madeline 8

Chamber Connection Whatrsquos helped your organization become successful in our community Antoniarsquos Paw Spa We have been told that our attention to detail and one on one approach with the dogs is what has made our business so successful Having been in the world of AKC dog shows for well over a decade gives us a level of experience not common in this area Our facility is also a big attraction to customers We keep a calm clean ldquospa likerdquo environment that is very soothing for the dogs and their owners We cater to a number of ldquospecialrdquo dogs that donrsquot do well in a traditional grooming shop environment

Chamber Connection What does your organization do that most people donrsquot know about Antoniarsquos Paw Spa We offer pick-up and drop-off services daycare and non-sedation dental cleaning clinics on a monthly basis Chamber Connection What are some recent successes your organization has experienced Antoniarsquos Paw Spa Our client base has more than quadrupled since our opening in June and is continuing to grow at an astounding rate Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine that the Paw Spa would so quickly become ldquoThe Premier Pet Salon amp Boutiquerdquo in Jackson known and appreci-ated throughout the greater West Tennessee area

Chamber Connection Do you have any community projects you are involved in Antoniarsquos Paw Spa We will be working with the Jackson-Madison County Humane Society in support of the ldquoFur Ballrdquo coming up on Saturday March 2 We are thrilled to be contributing our services to this event We participate in several events that support the Humane Society incliding ldquoPearls for Pawsrdquo and ldquoWhine and Dinerdquo We also take donations and sell t-shirts for them as well

Chamber Connection What challenges does your organization faceAntoniarsquos Paw Spa Scheduling is our biggest challenge Our popularity means that new customers sometimes have to wait four weeks to get an appointment But we are told it is well worth the wait
