In my work I make my utmost effort to bring forward the abun-dant beauty and splendor that is withheld in the Judaic Art. In my method, I do this by embedding the numerous Jewish symbols and icons that have developed throughout many centuries of our rich his-tory and heritage. The symbols mainly identify signs of fortune from the Kabbalah like good health, prosperity, fertility and so on. I believe that when a person stares at the picture and detects the signs, the fortune will come upon him or her.

Thank you for supporting original artPeace and Blessings from IsraelElena Kotliarker

What’s the point in painting?Imagine you enter a restaurant or a jewelry store… Try to recall that thrilling sensation when an exotic dish or a fascinating luxuri-ous piece of jewelry takes you in and makes you forget about all other business. You feel an urge to grab it, taste it, merge with it… Well, painting is my way to reproduce such sensations and to pass forward the evolving vibrations.

What do my pictures depict?First of all, it is my strong feeling for the nature of Israel – its rich GARDEN and its blooming and colorful flowery palette… This garden is rich in symbolic forms that are meaningful for Judaism as well for other religions …

Tzedakah: Charity The obligation to perform tzedakah can be fulfilled by giving money to the poor, to health care institutions, to synagogues or to educational institutions. It can also be fulfilled by supporting your children beyond the age when you are legally required to, or supporting your parents in their old age.

The obligation includes giving to both Jews and gentiles; contrary to popular belief, Jews do not just take care of our own.

Contributions:We appreciate the thoughtfulness of those who remember and honor their friends and loved ones through their donations.

The Sunday school program at Temple Beth Israel would like to invite your Temple Education Program students as well as your entire community to join us

for a Kosher Barbeque (kosher hamburgers and hot dogs) and a blood drive. We would greatly appreciate your support in this community service effort. Any kids

from the education program that wish to help out will be given a letter for proof of community service if requested. Come for a good cause as well as community fun.

Temple Beth IsraelJanuary 11, 2015 Sunday11:00 am-3:00 pmJoin the Temple to help those in need in the community! Donating blood is safe,it’s simple, and it saves lives. Most donors find it a painless and heart-warming experience.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Donors must be at least 16 years old and weigh at least110 pounds. All 16-year-olds and some 17-year-olds must have parent or guardianpermission to donate. Every blood donation begins with an interview and a briefmedical exam. The interviewer will take down the your personal information, including medical history, current health status, medications and travel history. Next, your temperature, blood pressure, pulse and blood hemoglobin level will be checked. Many donors consider this mini-physical an added bonus! If everything checks out after your interview and physical, you are ready to donate. The technician will gather your special kit with your donation materials in it. All materials used during the donation process are sterile and are used only once and then properly disposed. You cannot contract any infectious disease by donating blood. You will relax in a comfortable chair while the technician collects your blooddonation into a special container. The procedures are all different and take varyingamounts of time (whole blood donations take about 10 minutes; some pheresis donations last almost 2 hours). After your donation is complete and we outfit you with your hero’s badge ofhonor (gauze and a colorful bandage), you will rest and enjoy refreshments. We recommend that you spend at least 15 minutes in our refreshment area to have a snack and drink plenty of fluids. Then you can resume your normal routine.

Incorporating the blood drives in your religious education classes is agreat way to instill positive values and the power of community service. In the RGV we need to collect 175 units of blood daily to provide anadequate supply for the patients in the hospitals we serve. Donating bloodis a voluntary service that is made possible only through organizations, religious and educational institutions partnering with United Blood Serviceswith blood drive sponsorship programs. — Candy Sorayah Iannelli,Donor Recruitment Representative

Event: “Traces to Remember” Press Release

The “Traces to Remember” project is promoted and realized in more than 10 countries by the Global Embassy of Activists for Peace. It will be host at the State Capitol in Austin, Texas., in coordination with Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. and the Representative Eddie Lucio III, on January 26th, 2015 at 12:00 pm at the “1st Floor Rotunda”. A Star of David shaped sculptural plaque with the palm prints of Holocaust Survivor Leon Horn and his family will be presented. Serving as historical evidence for the prevalence of life over death and to reaffirm the existence of the inhumane Nazi Holocaust, one of the darkest period in history, in which more than 20 million people were exterminated.

Traces to Remember, is an initiative of the Global Ambassador, Dr. William Soto Santiago. Its main purpose is to keep alive the testimony of Holocaust Survivors and prevent the repetition of the most sinister chapter in the history of humanity. To educate against genocide and to promote the values of tolerance, equality, human dignity, respect for human rights and love of life.

Present on the day of the event will be: Global Ambassador Dr. William Soto Santiago, Representative Eddie Lucio III, Senator Eddie Lucio Jr. and other dignitaries, they will present the first commemorative sculptural plaque of the “Traces to Remember” Project in the United States to the members of the Senate and the House of the Representatives, as well as to the Texas community.

Holocaust Survivor Mr. Leon Horn will share his testimony with the attendees. The sculptural plaque, will be on display at the State Capitol during the event day, will then travel to various venues throughout the United States, including universities, embassies, governmental office buildings and museums. The plaque was unveiled at the University of Texas at Brownsville on October, 2014 and currently it is exhibited at the Brownsville Historical Museum.

For more information regarding this project feel free to contact Dr. Harden-Cooper at (956) 250-9999, [email protected] or visit our web page at www.embajadadeactivistasporlapaz.com.

Jewish Bible Scholar to speak at Temple Beth-El

“On the Bible’s Cutting Room Floor” FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Dr. Joel Hoffman

The Bible you usually read is not the complete story. Some holy writings were left out for political or theological reasons, others simply because of the physical restrictions of ancient bookmaking technology. At times, the compilers of the Bible skipped information that they assumed everyone knew. Some passages were even omitted by accident.

During his lecture, “On the Bible’s Cutting Room Floor”, Dr. Joel M. Hoffman will give us many examples of the stories and other texts that didn’t make it into the Bible even though they offer penetrating insight into the Bible and its teachings. His lectures are always filled with “AHA” moments!

Dr. Joel M. Hoffman focuses on translation, Hebrew, and the Bible, and is known for his "fresh insights and interpretations about religious life in the 21st century." A popular speaker, Dr. Hoffman presents to churches, synagogues, community groups, and university audiences across the world. He holds a Ph.D. in linguistics and has served on the faculties of Brandeis University and Hebrew Union College.

The Matamoros - Brownsville Jewish Connectionby Larry Holtzman

In the late 1800’s, most of the Matamoros Jewish residents had started to move to the new U.S. city of Brownsville, Texas. Many of them had fled to the safety of Matamoros during the violent times of the Civil War.

By the early 1900’s most of the families had moved to Brownsville or elsewhere leaving very few Jewish residents in Matamoros. Jewish immigrants started coming to Matamoros from Europe in the 1930’s and all of them were engaged in some sort of retail business. The Jewish population of Matamoros would change often depending on how fast a family would comply with the immigration quota available to them to enter the United States.

In the 1930’s, the building located at 8th and Matamoros Streets was the residency of the Elias Sandler family. One room was used as a classroom to teach children Yiddish and Hebrew by a Mr. Rappaport, who was a very Orthodox retired gentleman. He was brought down by the Sandlers to serve the Matamoros Jewish community. However, after a few months, Mr. Rappaport became disillusioned with the young people of Matamoros and the difficulty of being able to keep kosher in the small town of Matamoros with its approximate 9,000 population, few paved streets, no indoor plumbing or running water, so he returned to Mexico City.

The Jewish families who immigrated to Brownsville established businesses and were leaders in Temple Beth-el.

Here are Jewish families who moved to Brownsville from Matamoros:

Joseph Rubinsky, wife Betty, sons Simon and Toby and daughter, Sarita.Albert Rubinsky, brother to Joseph, single at the time. Married Ida of San Antonio. 1 son – Bill.Joseph Kolman, wife Minna, 2 sons, Sam and Isadore.Morris Ladabaum, wife Mae. 1 son – Sam.Most of these are buried in the Hebrew Cemetery of Brownsville.

Elias Sandler and wife Leiki, moved to Monterrey, Mexico, with their 2 sons and 1 daughter. The last report that I have is that the daughter married and moved back to Matamoros.
