Dear Friend, A new year begins again. And, as with each cycle of the seasons, it offers a chance for renew-al and rebirth. The Winter Solstice, bringing with it the lengthening of days, is often consid-ered the birth of the year. In the midst of the cold and darkness and still of winter, the new year breaks through slowly with the return of more light. Each new year holds the sacredness of this change. I always feel a rebirth of sorts and enjoy burrowing-in during the cold winter months,
using the quiet and renewal to plan the coming year, reflect on the past and eagerly await the spring. This year, rather than burrowing in, I’ll be branching out. I’ll spend the majority of January traveling by rail, exploring the parts of New Mexico and Arizona. It’s a much needed getaway as well as a chance to meet with poten-tial Associate Publishers in other cities — and the possibility of starting sis-ter publications in those areas. Our New Year, New You issue focuses on the inner searching of the sea-son. It's a chance to start anew, and many take on resolutions to take ad-vantage of this exciting opportunity. Whether you're focusing on eating whole foods, financial gain, taking on a new project or simply want to lead a life more in tune with your inner guidance, the articles this month help you to focus and get clear on your goals and motivations for achieving them. I wish you the most prosperous, joyous New Year — and beyond!

Healing with the Hathors
Harmony Energetics, LLC, has announced an upcoming free series of meditations Thursday evenings from 7-9 p.m. during the month of February using guided imagery from The Hath-or Material by Tom Kenyon, world renowned sound healer and neuropsychologist. Tom Kenyon began receiving messages from the Hathors in the late 1980s and initially resist-ed the idea of publishing the material channeled to him by these self-proclaimed inter-dimensional beings. The Hathors said: “We come in love and with the sounding of a new dream-reality for your Earth. If you are ready to build the New World, we invite you to join us on a journey of the mind and heart”. Having tested the efficacy of the information provided, he be-come convinced that this information should be shared. The book, The Hathor Material, was first published in 1997 and is now in its ninth print-ing. “We are relatively new to The Hathor Materi-al, says Linda VanBibber, owner of Harmony Energetics, LLC. “But like Tom, we have ex-plored the effects of the material and feel it has great value,” she explained. “The material has had a profound impact on me personally,” re-ports Linda. This is why Harmony Energetics will be offering a series of four evening medita-tion sessions, open to the public at no charge. “We would like for participants to make a commitment to all four sessions and do the meditations at home, so they achieve maximum benefit from the process,” says Linda. This ma-terial not only helps us prepare for inter-dimensional existence, it can also help us handle the stresses of the current planetary shift in con-sciousness, she explains. All degrees of partici-pation are welcome. The Hathor Material, is available on line at tomkenyon.com and on Amazon. Tom’s website also offers many additional transmissions from the Hathors. “You can do the meditations at home, by yourself, with profound results,” says Linda. “What we are offering is a chance to work with a group and the discussion opportunities that group participation provides.” For more information call 816-833-1129 or email [email protected].

C an you de-fine your n e g a t i v e ego? When
you are caught in it, you are blind to it. To begin 2015 here is a primer on staying
clean and clear. First, our negative ego always lies. I felt stuck last month. Some-thing was off. I called a friend who knows of ego and shares great in-sight. We centered into Divine love and relaxed. Then he said, “Suzette, you are in your ego and giving away your power.” I was blind to it! I was feeling sor-ry for myself, a leak of clarity and power indeed. The negative ego hurts. The posi-tive ego loves. We cannot destroy the ego, work to remain conscious and take steps to protect ourselves.
Why does the ego sneak in to take such power? We learn in our world from observation. So much of what we observe about love, or hear or see
or sense is inadequate. We learn love is pain, or love is suffering, or love is guilt. To overcome obstacles to love, meditation may be the number one healer. Practicing and teaching yoga and meditation for decades now, the complaint I hear most is, “I can’t turn off my head.” You won’t if you don’t practice. Counting 25 breathes serves as a great technique. Use mantra or prayer as you count. You teach yourself focus this way. The other excuse I hear is, “I have no time.” Really? You cannot find ten minutes to give love to yourself and others? You prefer less quality of life? Or excuses such as, “This is bor-ing,” means one thing: Ego has you by the tail. Author Neal Donald Walsh wrote, “If it is more fun to eat a salami sandwich than to meditate 15 minutes, eat the sandwich. No one is judging you. We are here to enjoy ourselves.” Daily affirmations work to lift your mind and spirit: I am relaxed and calm. I am feeling happy and at peace. I am becoming more abun-dant. I am responsible for my choic-es, attitudes, decisions, thoughts, feelings, and actions. How can I give? How can I serve?
Prerequisites for love are desire and choice. For me this year I am willing to embrace love, give and receive love, be strong enough to lean upon love, and feel worthy and deserving of the jewels of love. Join me. We will create a grand year!

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 6 January 2015
N ew Years is the time to make reso-l u t i o n s .
Alas, these great in-tentions often fail. So what can we do to turn a resolution into a result? Modern neurosci-
ence reinforces the very long under-standing that we need regular times to ‘take a break’ from our doing to just being. In a culture that values con-stant activity it is often difficult to jus-tify taking time to reorganize the brain. We have forgotten that this is a necessary phase of re-energizing the body-mind. Dr. Herbert Benson, author of The Relaxation Response, introduced the general public to a simple yet powerful way of taking a break. This consists primarily of slow, deep breathing for about 10-20 minutes. The first step to resting the body-mind is to begin by breathing in through the nose and slowly exhaling through the mouth. Breathing in for half as long as breath-ing out helps deepen the relaxation. In The 20-Minute Break Ernest Ross tells us why we need to take this break and what benefits we derive from it. One huge cause of stress is this unceasing activity preventing the brain from following its natural 90-120 cycle called the Ultradian Rhythm. We would be much healthier if we took a 20-minute break every 90-120 minutes. For most of us that is not possible. Neuroscientists tell us that, at the very least, we should consider taking a five minute break two or three times a day. Besides deep breathing what might we be doing during this break time? Okay, this is where the New Year’s Resolutions come into the picture. Positive habits are really changing old neural pathways and developing new ones. So the first step is to identify a habit we want to develop. For exam-ple, you might want to think more positively of your self or others. Think about what the old ‘neural pathway’ is doing in your life. Imagine what the new ‘neural pathway’ would look like or feel like.
A phrase that is particularly helpful in giving us an instant reframe is, “If I could imagine myself thinking more positive thoughts about myself or oth-ers, I wonder what it would look like, feel like, sound like?” This simple phrase helps the brain move from the old well-worn pathway of negative thinking to a new path of positive thoughts. The key to success is practice. As Aristotle says, “We are what we re-peatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” You remember the old saying “Repetition is the mother of learning?” Neuroscience confirms this and suggests it takes anywhere from 30-60 days, depending on the individ-ual to develop a habit or new neural pathway. The Neurobehavioral Program of-fers a tool to help people reduce stress, negative emotions, stress, pain and release trauma. Once learned it takes about five to eight minutes to do the exercise of checking biofeedback signals and giving the body-mind the commands to reduce stress, etc. After learning the program, just as with any relaxation, biofeedback, imagery or meditative tool, the person feels calm-er, more relaxed, rested and better able to make good decisions. Then comes the part that stops eve-ryone. We believe that we do not have time! Can you find five to ten minutes about two to three times a day to take a break, working on developing a new neural pathway of your choice? Accept the ‘take the break’ chal-lenge in this New Year. You will really like walking those new neural path-ways!

O n the path to optimal we l lne s s , s e v e r a l
aspects of our life are important. For our minds and bodies to function well, it is imperative to allow ourselves refreshing
sleep, healthy foods, regular exercise and stress management. For the New Year, I will share a few of my resolutions for 2015.
♦ Physical: my physical goal is to move my body more with walking, yoga and continue to ballroom dance regularly.
♦ Mental: Read a new book each month on personal wellness or spir-ituality.
♦ Emotional: Share my emotions fully and regularly with my husband and my friends.
♦ Spiritual: Donate time each month to my Church home and spend time in conversation with God daily.
To expand on the physical part of the holistic quadrangle, I am presenting ideas to improve your physical environ-ment. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency:
♦ More than four billion pounds of chemicals were released into the ground in 2000, threatening our natural ground water sources.
♦ Nearly two billion pounds of air emissions were pumped into the atmosphere.
♦ Several thousand food additives are intentionally added to our food sup-ply and thousands more slip into our food supply unintentionally during harvesting, processing, or packaging.
♦ Overall, the average American con-sumes about 124 pounds of food additives a year! In addition, expo-sure to toxins is increased by eating processed foods and fat, drinking or bathing in tap water, consuming excessive caffeine and/or alcohol, using tobacco, taking medications for long durations, inadequate exer-cise, liver or kidney problems and occupational exposure.
So what can you do to improve your health and minimize these exposures? Critics and proponents agree on one
thing: The best way to reduce the level of chemicals/toxins in your body is to bar their entrance. To reduce your exposure: 1) Don’t smoke and avoid secondary smoke. 2) Eat as much organic food as possible, especially if you consume animal prod-ucts. 3) Use water filters in your refriger-ator, sink and shower. 4) Use natural cosmetics, deodorants, and hair sprays. 5) Use nontoxic bug repellents. 6) Sub-stitute chemical-laden, scented house-hold cleaners and detergents for all-natural ones. 7) Limit your use of paint, varnish and wax. 8) Use air purifiers. 9) Avoid alcohol, artificial sweeteners and caffeine. 10) Don’t use plastic containers unless BPA free and avoid products pre-soaked in formaldehyde such as parti-cleboard and permanent-press fabrics. To help eliminate toxins: 1) Exercise regularly, 30 minutes 3x a
week. 2) Drink plenty of filtered water daily. 3) Eat red grapes and berries, nuts and
seeds, cruciferous vegetables, beans, leafy organic greens, onions and garlic regularly.
4) Participate in a 10 day or 28 day diet program that combines low allergenic, organic foods with a source of protein and nutrients known to enhance the body’s detox-ification capacity.
5) Far-Infrared Sauna treatments. 6) Enroll in a Juice Fast or cleansing
retreat. 7) Make an appointment to discuss an
individualized approach to rejuve-nate your body, mind and spirit.
Detoxification of the body can lead to better sleep and relaxation, decrease in aches and pain, reduce allergy symp-toms, aid weight loss and improve ener-gy and overall health.

R ead the label on any b o t t l e d salad dress-
ing or salad dressing mix and you’ll find all sorts of sodium, sug-ar, chemicals and unhealthy fat. Salad
dressings are so easy to make that there is really no reason for store bought salad dressing to exist in the first place. Preparation is key. Keep on hand a vari-ety of vinegars and cold and expeller pressed oils, sea salt, pepper, lemons, raw sesame tahini and avocados. If you are in a rush, remember one thing: three parts oil to one part vinegar = basic vinaigrette. Put in a mason jar, add a pinch of sea salt, a grind of black pepper, shake and serve. Easy. If you have a little more time you can spruce that up with any of these: 1/2 tsp dried or 1 tsp fresh herbs 1/2 tsp dijon or stone ground mustard 1/8 tsp minced garlic 1 tsp chopped green onion Just add to the mason jar before shaking and serving. For a creamy dressing without the dairy try my favorite salad dressing. It’s on my lunchtime salad every day. Dr. Klug’s Favorite Salad Dressing 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/2 cup raw pine nuts The juice of 2 lemons 2 TBSP fresh herbs or 1 TBSP dried Sea salt and pepper to taste Place all ingredients into a high speed blender. Whirr until smooth and creamy. Enjoy this dairy free Caesar salad dressing. It’s super peppery! Caesar Salad Lovers Dressing 3 avocados 1/3 cup lemon juice 1 TBSP black pepper 1 tsp salt 1 tsp cayenne pepper 3 TBSP olive oil 1/4 cup water Place all ingredients into a high speed blender. Whirr until smooth and creamy.
Miso is fermented Japanese paste that adds a sweet and salty flavor to soups, sauces and dressing. Creamy Miso Dressing 1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup lemon juice 2 TBSP water 1 TBSP raw chickpea miso 1/2 tsp sea salt Place all ingredients into a high speed blender. Whirr until smooth and creamy. Makes 1/2 cup. Get your greens with this dressing. Avocado Spinach Dressing 1 large avocado 2 cups finely chopped spinach 1/2 apple 1 tsp cayenne 1 tsp sea salt Water as needed to achieve smooth con-sistency Place all ingredients except water into a high speed blend. Add water teaspoon by teaspoon to achieve consistency. The intense flavor of sun-dried toma-toes punches up a salad. If you buy them dried, rather than packed in oil, soak them in hot water for 10 minutes to soften. Sun-dried Tomato Vinaigrette ½ tsp minced garlic 1 TBSP chopped sun-dried tomatoes 1 TBSP red wine vinegar 1 TBSP balsamic vinegar 1/4 cups extra virgin olive oil ½ tsp raw honey Sea salt to taste Place all ingredients in an s-blade food processor and process until smooth.

Potato Pancakes (Latkes) Prepared "In Bonnie's Kitchen" with her Mom
Ingredients for Potato Pancakes (Latkes): 5 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes (since I use organ-ic potatoes, I merely scrub and let dry) - cut in quarters 2 medium onions, peeled & quartered 2 large eggs - room temperature 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ bunch green onions, chopped (both green & white parts) kosher salt & fresh cracked pepper to taste (I use about 2 tablespoons of salt) vegetable oil for frying Sour cream with fresh chopped chives (condiment) Applesauce with cinnamon & sugar (condiment)
Directions for Potato Pancakes (Latkes): Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Using the grating blade on a food processor, al-ternate potatoes and onions (if grating by hand, use the large grate holes for the potatoes) Place mixture in a colander over a large mixing bowl to drain off excess moisture In another large mixing bowl, whisk eggs, baking powder, green onions, flour and S & P. Add potato and onion mixture to bowl and mix well (if mixture feels too wet, add starch that has settled in the liquid drained from the grated pota-toes & onions) Heat frying pans to about medium heat, then add oil to about¾ inch deep. When oil shimmers, test a small piece of the Latke mixture in the hot oil. The mixture should sizzle, but not too rapidly. Using a slotted spoon, place Latke mixture (at
desired size of pancakes) in hot oil (you may need to adjust heat as you cook) After about 3 or 4 minutes, lift the edge of the potato pancakes to see if they are ready for turning (should be golden brown). Once fried, place Latkes on a cooling rack over a cookie sheet or shallow baking pan and keep warm in the ov-en. The rack will allow the Latkes to drain and main-tain their crispness. Serve with condiments and eat in good health.

M any people will tell you that
we shouldn't talk about goals in spir-itual practice. If we're thinking about our goals all the time, it can actually
be a hindrance and can distract us from the goal. In my spiritual tradition, Zen Buddhism, there is a tendency to avoid talking about goals. But, there have al-ways been a handful of maverick teachers who were willing to talk about progress and goals. I call it transformation, but that's not exactly accurate. What we're really trying to do isn't to change ourselves. In Bud-dhism it is taught that people are enlight-ened already, that the true self is lumi-nous and pure. The only reason it is not recognized is because there are layers of delusion that obscure the truth. I view spiritual practice as an excava-tion: Trying to dig through the levels of delusion that are affecting us. These layers involve illusions and preconceptions that shape the view of reality. These involve the tendency to separate reality, to think in terms of 'self' and 'other'. If one were to dig through these, the true self would be seen. The true self rep-resents what we were before the world told us what we should be, before we started labeling and judging everything. Because of our delusion we sometimes get caught up in these labels and judgments, and we don't see reality at all. There is something we can do, howev-er. Enlightenment is the goal of Buddhist practice. We dig into the mind to find true nature. There are several methods for doing this. I suggest cultivating the Six Perfec-tions. The Six Perfections are as follows: Generosity, Virtue, Diligence, Patience, Con c en t r a t i on , and W i sd om. To continue to use the digging meta-phor, these are our tools. The Perfection of Generosity represents more than just giving material things. It does represent giving money or items to the needy, but it also represents giving your time, things like helping a friend move or spending time comforting some-one who is suffering. We can also give someone less tangible things, like our love, respect, or patience. The practice of generosity increases our confidence. It also helps lessen our attachments.
The Perfection of Virtue represents ethical behavior. This means that through love and compassion we do not harm oth-ers. When commitment is strong in the Perfection of Virtue we naturally become more positive. The Perfection of Patience represents patience, tolerance, and acceptance. The essence of this is the strength of mind that enables us to face the challenges of life without losing composure and inner tran-quility. The Perfection of Diligence involves continuing to persevere when things are difficult. We have to be determined on the path, in studying ourselves, and in seeing true reality. Through diligence we can generate great compassion to help others and ourselves. The Perfection of Concentration repre-sents meditation, contemplation and mental stability. The mind has the ten-dency to be very distracted and restless, always moving from one thought or feel-ing to another. This can cause heavy at-tachment to thoughts and emotions. The Perfection of Concentration means train-ing the mind so that it does what one wants. We stabilize the mind and emo-tions by striving to be mindful and aware in everything we do. I recommend medi-tation, but there are other methods. The Perfection of Wisdom is the quality of deep insight. The essence of this perfec-tion is the supreme wisdom, the highest understanding that living beings can at-tain, beyond words and completely free from the limitation of ideas, concepts, or intellectual knowledge. The Perfection of Wisdom is a result of contemplation, meditation, and understanding the nature of reality. The sixth perfection is what truly ties the other five together and is often considered the most important. That's what it takes. The Six Perfec-tions are the tools in this mission of dig-ging to enlightenment. So let's start digging.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 13 January 2015
T here
is so
much
talk
these days
about the pow-
er of intenons.
It has become
the go-to word
for everyone
trying to acve-
ly manifest their desires, or direct the
course of their lives. Unfortunately,
intenons only hit the surface of the
vibraonal field that aligns us with our
experiences. Think of it this way: If
there are five people si"ng in a room
and one of them sets an intenon of
ge"ng up and leaving, how many
people are le# si"ng there? Five!
Nothing has actually happened. That
is because an intenon is just a
thought. Yes, thoughts are energy.
And they go out into the collecve
consciousness and affect our reality,
but it is like a whisper in a storm.
The key is to e that intenon to
some sort of emoon or acon. When
you connect with something emoon-
ally the vibraon you send into the
collecve is much louder than a sim-
ple thought. It carries much more en-
ergy than just a thought would. Like-
wise, when you take an intenon into
a form of acon, be it direct or indi-
rect, you have dramacally impacted
the energies around you. At the mo-
ment of acon there would only be
four people le# si"ng in the room.
Acons truly do speak louder than
words when it comes to manifesng.
Picture it: a moonlit night under the
stars, drums beang in the back-
ground. A sacred dance has just com-
pleted, and into the center of the cir-
cle of those gathered steps a Shaman.
He is dressed in horns and fur robes.
His face is painted and his bells and
ra1le can be heard piercing through
the night, reaching up to Great Mys-
tery/Great Spirit. He begins channg,
and the drums once again begin to
swell and pound. He dances and cries
out. The enre gathering is complete-
ly drawn into the emoon of the mo-
ment. Each movement holds meaning,
and when the energy is at its highest
the Shaman suddenly stops and the
drums fall silent. As the crowd hangs
between the moment of emoonal
frenzy and complete silence, the
Shaman yells, “Rain,” channeling all of
that emoon, all of that acon, all of
that energy into the intenon. The
next day the clouds come and the
droughts end.
In the Shamanic path we under-
stand the role of emoons and acons
and the power they have compared to
simply trying to think something into
being. Everything is energy and every-
thing is ed together. That is certain.
The Shaman's way tells us that we can
affect our future experiences but only
by acng in the now. You cannot
simply “pull something out of thin air”
because the now has already been
created by your previous thoughts,
feelings and acons. You must align
yourself now with what you wish to
experience in the future. As much as
it sounds contradictory, the key to this
is being fully present. Here and now
you must think, believe, talk and act
like you want to be. You have to emo-
onally connect with what you want
even if that means borrowing an emo-
on from memory and tying it to the
present intenon. Above all, do
something toward what you want. Be
who and how you want to be in every
aspect of yourself and you will be-
come that which you strive to be, and
have what you seek to manifest.
When you align what you think,
say, do and believe, you have built a
solid foundaon on which to build
your manifestaons. When any of
these elements fall out of balance
with the others, or do not match, then
the manifestaon you create will be
distorted because you are impacng
the collecve with mixed signals. Align
all aspects of yourself and you will find
freedom to live the life you seek.
Form your intenons. Make them
clear and strong. Find a way to emo-
onally connect with what you wish to
manifest. Align your inner and outer
dialogue to empower you for success.
Then get up out of the chair and do
something toward what you are
wanng. Begin to live as you wish to
be, even if it is small or symbolic
steps. Realize that you are constantly
aligning and realigning yourself with
every thought, word and deed. Let
that understanding be both a freedom
and a responsibility — and honor it
accordingly. This is the way to feeling
fully connected to and empowered by
your experiences.

G orgeous hair and skin are two
of our most visible assets.
Healthy skin feels great, too.
Hair that is beauful and well-arranged
will free up energy that can be used in
other areas of life.
Since each person’s hair and skin
are unique, a mind-boggling array of
techniques and products are available for care. Choose
natural, plant-based products. Avoid products with po-
tenally irritang synthec ingredients, as well as oil-
based products that the skin cannot absorb. Healthy
habits can be challenging to develop, but can be incorpo-
rated into our daily lives.
Jean Zhao, owner of Happy Feet and Hand Spa, says
the Chinese recommend a good head massage for five to
10 minutes for healthy skin and hair. Mark Twain was
famous for his thick head of hair, which he a1ributed to
a daily five-minute head massage. Zhao emphasizes that
eang plenty of fruits and vegetables is essenal for
beauful hair and skin.
Skin: To have skin like a baby’s bo1om, treat it like a
baby’s bo1om—very gently. Nutrion and hydraon are
important. Laura Rues, naturopathic doctor at Kansas
City Integrave Health, says, “The skin is the largest or-
gan of the body, and it o#en is a window into a person’s
internal environment. Acne, dry skin, and yellowing of
the skin can be signs of other health condions, including
hormone irregularies or liver disorders.” Even dehydra-
on affects our skin. Dr. Rues connues, “Many of us
don’t get enough water throughout the day. Dehydraon
makes your skin look dry, dull and wrinkled. Ensuring
adequate fluid intake (half your body weight in ounces of
water daily) is not only good for the health of your skin,
but also your overall health.” Healthy skin feels vibrant
and alive. Skin care is made up of four parts: cleansing,
moisturizing, protecng, and decorang.
Cleansing: Each morning and night, cleanse the skin. To
avoid transferring unhealthy elements from your hands
to your face, wash hands repeatedly unl the soap bub-
bles appear white. Then, wash face and neck with a
product of your choice, using your hands or clean, white
co1on washcloth. Nian Zhao of Happy Feet and Hand Spa
said that her mother uses rice water (the water le# from
rinsing rice) to wash her face, a custom common in Chi-
na. A#er washing, gently pat your skin dry with a clean
white co1on cloth. The final step in cleansing is toning.
Using upward moons, use a co1on pad doused with a
small amount of toner over the face and neck to remove
the remaining residues before moisturizing.
Moisturizing and protecng: A variety of products are
available for moisturizing. Products made with fruit acids
can exfoliate chemically to reduce wrinkles. Sensive eye
areas require specially designed moisturizers. Apply eye
creams with the ring finger moving out from the center
of the face. During the day, use moisturizers with sun-
screen. At night, use a more rich cream. Nurturing se-
rums and neck creams are also available. Be creave.
Layering moisturizing products can promote youthful-
looking skin for your unique skin type.
Decorang. If you choose, use a foundaon and fix it
with powder. Blushes, eye colors, and lipscks can en-
hance any face.
Hair: Lackluster hair can be an indicator of stress, lack of
sleep and poor habits. Individuals with short hair can
tolerate the damaging effects of hair dryers, as well as
harsh treatments and products. Long hair requires spe-
cial care.
Combing and brushing hair: Hair is elasc and tears easi-
ly. Gently brush or comb long hair. Use a wide-toothed
comb. Ms. Zhao said that the Chinese use wooden or
horn combs to avoid creang electricity, resulng in
smoother hair. Use a natural bristle brush to keep hair
long and strong. Avoid plasc bristles, which tear.
Shampooing: Experiment with shampoos and condion-
ers to find one that you like. Harsh shampoo, like those
used to avoid dandruff, can dry the scalp. Steer toward
gentle products like those made from natural ingredi-
ents. Change products from me to me.
Before shampooing, braid long hair loosely to avoid tan-
gling. When washing, start with the scalp first and work
toward the ends. A#er rinsing, condion the ends first
and work up the hair to the scalp.
Drying: Avoid using hair dryers, as the heat will cause
hair to break. A#er towel drying, allow the hair to dry
naturally. If going out while it is wet, put the hair up into
a bun or use clips.
Using oils:. Oil produced by the scalp rarely reaches the
ends of long hair. Applying oils and condioners keeps
hair nourished and reduces spli"ng. Dousing the hair
and scalp with ample cold-pressed virgin olive oil once a
month will do wonders. It is amazing how much oil the
scalp and hair will absorb. Work as much oil as possible
into the scalp and hair. Then slowly and gently use a
wide-toothed (wooden or horn) comb to cover each
strand with oil. Work tangles out carefully to avoid tear-
ing. Tie the hair up and leave the oil in as long as possible
– up to 24 hours. (Ayurveda oil mixtures specifically for
hair, as well as coconut oil work, too.) Then use plenty of
shampoo to wash the hair, being careful around the edg-
es of the hairline to remove excess oil. Otherwise, the
hair will feel and appear gummy when it dries.
Other hair-care ps. Use clips that don’t tear or one-me
use rubber bands that can be cut or broken before re-
moving. Covering the hair to protect it from the ele-
ments, like the sun, can be protecve. To avoid sun dam-
age, use products with sunscreen. Before bed, braid the
hair loosely to avoid tangles.
Summary. Beauful skin and hair enhance our lives and
well-being. Discovering and incorporang self-care habits
that fit your unique needs will provide the freedom to
enjoy your physical being more and the me and energy
to focus on other areas of your life.
Editor’s note: We recommend avoiding parabens and
sodium laurel sulphate in all hair and skin products.

A Chakra Circus of Health for Parents: 7 Habits of Health for Mind, Body & Spirit
P arents are a child's
first teacher. Kids
look up to parents
in so many ways.
They have a unique oppor-
tunity to inspire their child to
create good habits and live a
healthy life.
Chakra 1 - Nutrion
Nutrion habits are inially formed at home. Don't re-
ward kids with sugar. Please them with special trips or me
together. The sweetness they really crave is me with you.
Make resoluons with them to pracce healthy eang hab-
its. Let them see you snack on fruits and vegetables. Kids
learn more from what you do than what you say. Talk about
the healing power of food at mealmes. Have kid's nutrion
books around during snack and dinner me to show them
the benefits of what they are eang. Healthy food is na-
ture's “farmacy.”
Chakra 2 - Exercise
Find fun ways to exercise. Kids need outlets to burn off
energy. Creave forms of exercise promote be1er concen-
traon, which improves learning and be1er grades in
school. Some of my favorite childhood memories are fo-
cused around fitness. My mom and dad rode bikes, and I
had a seat on the back of my mom's bicycle. My dad played
hide and seek with us. He took us to Loose Park and we
raked leaves into piles just to jump in them. My mom took
me to my first gym, the Kelly Lyn Figure Spa in Shawnee,
when I was 10. When I was 12, she took me to the Shawnee
Mission Medical Center Life Dynamics Building for my first
aerobics class. She was also my first yoga teacher. Yoga
books by Lilias Folan, Richard Hi1leman, and other yogis
were lying around the house. She would get on the floor at
my denst appointments and stretch. As a junior-high stu-
dent, it partly embarrassed and partly intrigued me. My
parent's focus on fitness made a big difference in my life. I
am grateful they passed on a love for movement. Your kids
will thank you too.
Chakra 3 - Learning & Self-Esteem
Here's a fun day of learning - filled with adventure too: Plan
a daytrip and take the JO or other local bus route. The JO
provides public service to much of Johnson County, down-
town KC, MO, and Kansas City, KS. Map a route, get off at
different stops, and see different parts of our beauful city.
Explore local neighborhood restaurants. You can also plan a
daytrip to the cute li1le downtowns of Parkville or Weston.
Pick up the book Day Trips from Kansas City: Getaway Ideas
for the Local Traveler by Shifra Stein. There are over 200
trips within two hours of Kansas City that make great learn-
ing excursions on the weekend. It's fun and excing to ex-
plore beyond your regular rounes. A change of pace is
good for everyone.
Chakra 4 - Environment
Do you feel powerless to have a posive impact on the envi-
ronment? Let me introduce you to Bridging the Gap and its
'Five Green Things' campaign. Bridging the Gap picked five
acons families can do together to make a big difference in
reducing carbon emissions:
1. Give up bo1led water.
2. Switch to energy efficient light bulbs.
3. Wash laundry in cold water.
4. Keep thermostat at 68 degrees in winter, 78 degrees in
summer.
5. Cut out unnecessary driving and gasoline use by one
quarter.
Your children can help and will love this challenge. Let them
go light bulb shopping with you, help you load the washer,
and pick out reusable plasc water bo1les.
Chakra 5 - Family & Community
Make family resoluons for 2015. In a culture that is moving
faster and faster, let's slow down and spend more quality
me with loved ones. Volunteer to improve your communi-
ty with family and friends by providing the hands and the
hearts. Do something for each of these habits of health.
Le"ng your kids help you plan something special makes
them feel appreciated. Here are a few ideas: Help out at
Harvesters Community Food Network. Volunteer to walk
dogs at the animal shelter. Help cook or clean at the Ronald
McDonald house. Commit to doing one thoughTul act a day
for the community such as picking up trash you find on the
sidewalk or street. Volunteer at the Kauffman Foundaon
where their mantra is ‘Local Roots, Naonal Impact, Global
Reach.” As a family, pracce random of acts of kindness for
strangers. Li1le things like leaving quarters at the car wash
for the person behind you builds a sense of community.
Chakra 6 - Global Appreciaon
Look for ways to expand your child's view of the world.
Vising Ten Thousand Villages in downtown Overland Park
is like a trip around the globe. You'll find unique and crea-
ve gi#s from over 40 countries—places such as Africa,
Asia, Central and South America. With every purchase,
you're providing jobs for people in these developing coun-
tries to care for their families and communies. This is an
opportunity to teach kids about how their purchases and
fair trade makes a global impact. Then take a trip to the
Nelson-Atkins Museum where you will see some of the fin-
est art collecons from around the world.
Chakra 7 - Spirituality
There are opportunies to enrich your child's spiritual life
every day. Take a few moments to appreciate the beauty
and sllness of nature. Spend ten minutes together si"ng
under a tree in your backyard sharing your day. Bedme is a
wonderful me to introduce spiritual concepts to children.
There are great children's books that will inspire your child. I
Think, I Am by Louise L. Hay and On My way To a Happy Life
by Deepak Chopra are two of my favorites. They teach kids
that happiness lies inside them, and how to culvate loving
thoughts towards others.
As a parent you have a truly unique opportunity to start
your child on the path to a happy, producve, healthy life.
They will grow up soon, so start teaching these seven habits
now. Tell them “A Chakra Circus of Health” is coming to
town.
Sumya Anani is a You Can Heal Your Life®
Workshop Leader and Life Coach, based on the
teachings of Louise Hay and the psychology of the
chakras. She owns Learning2Fly, an aerial fitness

these health habits in her kid's summer camps.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 16 January 2015
Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) Mercury is retrograde in your sign, but that's a good thing! Meditate and release parts of your ego. You’ll make leaps in spiritual growth by late February. The less attached you are to your identity, the more flexible and peaceful you become -- while still being success-ful and confident. Intuitive ideas can increase finances. Begin tith-ing, or put mystical money meth-ods into practice. Also, seek friends committed to their spiritual path to further inspire you.
Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Mars, the planet of empowerment and confidence, moves into your sign! You'll defeat inner demons that have troubled you and you’ll feel spiritually triumphant! Others notice your shift of consciousness and give you more respect and re-sponsibility (maybe a major pro-motion at work!) You'll also truly respect yourself. Relationships are more intimate and fulfilling. Pay attention to dreams for new goals to embark upon. Aries (March 21 – April 19) You're a warrior! But as powerful Mars plows through your subcon-scious these next two months, and Saturn enters Sagittarius (the sign of spiritual seeking), use your cour-age to defeat inner dragons. Medi-tate and list your deepest fears,
and also old resentments. They’re areas of unconscious energy waste! Also examine spiritual paths and make a commitment. Focus in one direction and become a master of what you’ve chosen!
Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Saturn begins a 2 1/2 year mission to release old issues about intimacy and sexuality. Start the New Year right by listing disappointing memories you want healed. It's time to re-write your karmic script about feeling treasured and appre-ciated -- and also worthy of pleas-ure and bliss! Seek out info on spiritual sexuality. Also read about prosperity and abundance. You deserve divine blessings, so con-vince your subconscious to let it all in!
Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Relationships need to go to a high-er level. You're craving spiritual partnership. Meditate to see what steps to take to intensify your cur-rent connection, or if single, where to seek out one of many who want what you want in love! Stay com-mitted to your plan so you can manifest your vision! At work you can start a new project that is ex-citing and inspiring!
Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Emotional and physical health stems from your thoughts. With
Mercury retrograde, meditate and observe your thinking to see if your ideas build you up or tear you down. Get enthusiastic about the power of affirmations to create the life you want. Also ponder the im-portance of denials — the ability to say “NO!” to negative beliefs and to remove them from your conscious-ness forever! Do gentle exercises, like stretching or Yin yoga.
Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Don’t let misunderstandings or misevaluations cause problems in relationships. Mercury is retro-grade, so instead of blurting your feelings, meditate and see if old memories that need releasing are being triggered. Once you let go of your “old glasses”, you’ll see things clearly and a deeper bond emerges. If single you can meet an entirely new sort of person who fulfills your dreams!
Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) You can be starting a new relation-ship or have revamped energy in your current one! But make sure you aren’t losing yourself in others. Focus on self-care. Please eat well; get enough rest; practice stress re-duction like deep breathing and yoga. When you put yourself first, everyone benefits since you’ll radi-ate spiritual vibes that bless and uplift everyone!
Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) List your positive attributes and create affirmations for yourself. Ask a trusted friend to help. Focus on positive beauty statements and body image concepts. Removing critical thoughts about your ap-pearance improves relationships by a mile! Spiritual beauty will pour through your body and aura. It’s been there, you’re just letting it out! You’ll even have financial windfalls as you surrender to lov-ing ideas!
Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Meditate on self-worth and financ-es. Are you subconsciously punish-ing yourself? Spend time reading spiritual prosperity books and for-giving yourself of whatever “sins” you torment yourself over! You are likely harboring your parents’ neg-ative money beliefs. Clear out your “energy body” so you can nurture your OWN financial karma, and no longer carry theirs! If you have pets, they’ll be amazingly comfort-ing in this healing process. Your new energy can attract an exciting relationship, or refresh a current one!
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) Saturn, the planet of discipline and simplicity, is in your sign for 2 1/2 years. It’s once every 30 years, and a great chance to weed out what doesn’t serve you — and nurture what empowers you! You could feel tired or introspective, and not your bouncy self. Allow this shift to evaluate priorities and begin re-leasing goals, thought patterns, items or even relationships that limit you. Dedicate yourself to a spiritual practice to be able to touch the depths it offers you. Aluna Michaels is a second-generation astrologer and Soul Evolutionist practi-tioner. Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels
January 2015
Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Happy birthday Capricorn! Saturn is in Sagittarius, purifying your subconscious of limiting beliefs that hold you back in puzzling ways. Meditation and dreams reveal forgotten issues, or even past life events to be forgiven and released. Don't allow shortcomings to bring you down. It’s a gift to be evolved enough to see what needs to be healed! You might get financial gifts, or have money come in easy ways!
