The theme for the past12 months at the clubhas been upgrading. The theme for the past 12 months at the club has been upgrading. We

have an enormous number of people come to the club and bar each

week and of course the old place takes a bit of a battering. In the past

year we have upgraded the sound desk situation, all the bathrooms,

much of the back house, the kitchen floor, walls and some of the kit,

replaced the club table bases for extra comfort and have installed

cameras and built an AV studio. Busy, and costly, times. To be frank it’s

a bit of a Forth Bridge this place.

It’s often easy to consider Ronnie Scott’s as just the club and the

headliner playing therein, when in fact there is a whole lot more going

on. The Bar upstairs is a venue in its own right with separate promoter

nights bringing all sorts of jazz based music each evening. The

Wednesday jam, for instance, has been running almost 5 years now

and is as packed as ever. Downstairs the Late Late Shows have been

getting extremely busy, with Thursdays particularly getting so full we are

finding the place is full at 1am with a queue outside! And then there’s

the Big Band and All Stars getting bookings around the world and the

weekly radio show - now presented by Ian Shaw - broadcast on Jazz FM,

and in Toronto too. Maybe this year’s theme should be world domination.

Highlights of the early 2013? Well we have a few new artists to the club

in Eumir Deodato - remember “Also Sprach Zarathustra (aka Theme to

2001: A Space Odyssey)”? Plus pop percussionist Manu Katché and

Brazilian superstar Milton Nascimento. And at the tail end of February

a very long awaited return of Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval. Pedal Steel

Guitar fans will love Robert Randolph on Feb 15th.

A word to the wise, Kurt Elling in April is shifting at a rate of knots.

DIZZY GILLESPIE™AFRO CUBAN EXPERIENCEFEATURING MACHITO JNR

John Lee (bs), Freddie Hendrix (tpt/flt/hrn), Sharel Cassity (sax/flt),Yotam (gtr), Robby Ameen (drs) Machito Jr. (perc).

Breath taking tribute to the Afro-Cuban innovations of the late great be-boppioneer and trumpet legend, Dizzy Gillespie. Gillespie was first introducedto the legendary Cuban percussionist Chano Pozo in 1947 by band leaderMario Bauza. They became life-long friends and together they mixed therhythms of Cuba with the sounds of bop creating the music we now callAfro-Cuban jazz, which became an instant hit, attracting people to danceto its unique rhythms. Gillespie's most enduring Afro-Cuban compositionswere massive hits and have become world wide standards “Manteca” and“Tin Tin Deo”.

At the same time percussionist Machito’s Afro Cubans (formed in 1940),the creators of Cu-Bop, were a major influence on musicians like DizzyGillespie and they famously recorded together in the late 50s. Dizzy loved itso much, that in 1975, he invited Machito’s son, Mario Grillo or Machito Jr.,to join Dizzy’s band for the recording of ‘Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods’. So it onlymakes sense to have him join the Dizzy Gillespie™ Afro Cuban Experienceunder the direction of John Lee, Dizzy’s long-time bassist, and the directorof the Dizzy Gillespie™ Big Band.
