1 Feliz Año Nuevo Bonne Année Happy New Year NEW YEAR - RENEWED AWARD Dear Parents, Carers, Governors, Friends, Staff and Pupils Welcome back. I do hope you have enjoyed a wonderful Christmas and New Year. I also hope you have all enjoyed the range of Christmas experiences which were provided. I am very grateful to the entire team and the Friends Association for a most memorable end of the year. It seems a long time ago since the Christmas Tree Assembly which launched Christmas for our children. I certainly hope we created the magic of Christmas for them all. Christmas time as a primary child is unique and I’ve always wanted it to be special in the children’s hearts and memories, a gift they will wish to pass on to the next generation. Thank you all for your encouragement and engagement with the array of seasonal activities. Thank you for all your support and goodwill messages to the team. The cards and gifts are not expected but as always you are so generous and kind. Most of all thank you for your understanding and patience, hopefully safe in the knowledge that the only thing we all want is the best for your children. We look forward to an exciting 2018. As is tradition, we shall be hosting our own International Festival in February and details will be announced in a special newsletter next week! Please do note however that Thursday 8th February 2018 is the big International Festival night; a date for your diary. We were also delighted in the last assembly of the year to confirm that the school had been reawarded the International Eco School Green Flag, the highest award. This award means a great deal to the children largely because it is all about the sustainability of the world which they will inherit. The work is coordinated by the Green team which is lead by members of Year 6 but with representatives from each class. The award covers the work of the school in the following nine areas. Biodiversity, Energy, Litter, Waste, Water, School Grounds, Healthy Living, Transport and Global Citizenship. The Green Team leads the work with an Environmental Review, and the creation of an Action Plan. They must monitor and evaluate the school’s eectiveness in this area and inform and involve the whole school. There must be clear curriculum links and an eco code. The work links nicely with two other initiatives we engage in, i.e Fair Trade and the International School Award. As always behind these initiatives there is the guidance and time and talents of a team of sta. Mrs. Kilford, Mrs. Iveson, Mrs. Go, Mrs. Hemphill and all lead by Mrs. Hulse. Congratulations to the pupils for an amazing fund raising total of £4850.15 beating last year’s record breaking total by £10! This is amazing particularly in light of financial constraints at the moment. It is recognition of the children’s generosity and ingenuity. It is also clearly a reflection of the support and encouragement that Parents/Carers and staff have given to pupils. Each class made representations to the Pupil Council which decided on the charities to receive donations. Each of eight charities will receive £587.52 and they are as follows:Great Ormond Street HospitalChildren in NeedThrombosis UKSamara’s AidCancer Research UKGuide Dogs for the BlindFire Rescue DogsDogs TrustIn addition £150 will be given to Beverley Minster. As is so often the case, I feel very proud of the children of Molescroft Primary School and I am sure you will join me in giving them hearty congratulations for the achievement and decisions made.

In addition I have received the letter (right) from the Royal British Legion regarding the collection for the Poppy Appeal at the school. This is double the amount raised last year. Many many thanks.

LOCAL BUILDERS WRITE TO SCHOOL Thanks Guys.

Dear Head Teacher, Myself and my brother were working on a property next to your school this week and could constantly hear the sound of children playing and singing but what we noticed most of all was the music and how this was used within the play area, to see the children doing a mass dance off was just fantastic. Myself and my brother were more than impressed and then the music could be heard

within the school. Working away from home as we were can be let’s say trying at times. Yes here we were all the way from Birmingham working in the cold and snow yet with warm smiles and laughter. I commend you and your staff on your teaching approach I wish I had of experienced this myself as a child, again to you all nice one keep up the excellent work. Merry Christmas to you, your staff and every little person in your great school. David and Bryn Thomas.

Dear Molescroft Primary School,

I write to thank everyone at Molescroft Primary School, for helping with the Poppy Appeal. You collected the magnificent sum of £218.48 which, in turn, has contributed to an Appeal total, so far, of over £47,400 for our area, with more still to be collected. Without your support we would be unable to continue our vital welfare and benevolent work, helping members of our Armed Forces and their families, wherever the need arises. Thank you once again.

Kind regards

R SNOW POLICY: IMPORTANT The following is taken from the school’s Safeguarding Policy and should prepare parents/carers for what to expect when it snows.

The school will only close without prior notice as a last resort. The Head Teacher or his representative will remain on site until the last child is collected.

Policy in Practice What the school does to assist in the event of icy weather conditions. It is not practical to grit the entire site, but as part of the gritting policy, safe routes round the site and across the South Playground have been identified and will be gritted before giving access to the site, thereby minimising the risks to children parents and visitors. The car park will also be gritted.

Children are not allowed to make slides on the playgrounds. Playgrounds are gritted if practical before 8:30am and when not, by morning break. At playtimes a decision as to whether children are to be allowed outside will be made by the senior teacher on duty in conjunction with a member of the Senior Management Team.

Children may not throw snowballs on the playgrounds. However if the field is covered by thick snow pupils may be allowed to play on the field in the snow, make snowman and throw snowballs. Those not wishing to throw snow (or indeed be hit by snowballs) should stay on the playgrounds. The school believes that playing in and throwing snow is part of a child’s life experiences.

In extreme cases the Headteacher may decide that there is no option but to close the school if there is presented a severe health and

safety risk. This done, the Chair of Governors and the local radio stations will be informed. A severe Health and Safety Risk would be presented if insufficient staff could reach the school or indeed the health and safety of staff meant that they should leave early. Due to the location of the school it is expected that the school will be able to remain open. Closing a school at short notice including closing mid way through a day poses considerable difficulties for parents and will only be taken as a very last resort.

A complete heating failure in the winter and/or a loss of the water supply would however result in the school having to close.

Good communication is essential. Parents receive a copy of specific instructions during the autumn and winter months via the monthly newsletters and the website. Children have the processes explained to them in the classroom. It is expected that parents adhere to these instructions and pass all relevant information to friends and relatives who may also come to school to bring and fetch children. Parents/Carers are asked to be responsible and plan more time for their journey, suitable footwear for having to walk further, wrapping up to keep warm etc....Parents should not expect to be able to park close to the school at these times! Parents and visitors are expected to use the gritted paths rather than walk across the snow and ice.

Snow Policy and Procedures - information for teaching and support staff In the event of disruption caused by heavy snow the prime concern of the school must always be the safety of the pupils and staff.

It is expected that all staff will make every reasonable effort to undertake the journey to school. It is appreciated that the journey may

take longer than normal and therefore some staff may not be able to arrive before the normal start of school time. In the event of severe weather, a decision to close the school for day pupils will be made by 7am. The Head Teacher will contact Radio Humberside and Viking Radio to ask them to broadcast the information.

PARENTS WILL BE INFORMED BY TEXT IF THE SCHOOL IS TO CLOSE.Updates will be posted on the Twitter section of the school’s website. www.molescroftprimary.net

In the event of the normal timetable being suspended, a programme of activities will be organised for pupils who arrive at school. Teachers and Teaching Assistants will be delegated to supervise these activities.

Rather than a full closure it is more likely that the school will remain open on a reduced capacity. In such an event, parents/carers will be asked if it is possible to make alternative arrangements for pupils. Where this is not possible the school will remain open for those who need to come to school or for those who cannot go home in the case of an unexpected early closure. As the number pupils remaining decreases, they will be moved to other classes or the hall.

The school will only close without prior notice as a last resort. The Head Teacher or his representative will remain on site until the last child is collected.

School Meals are Excellent Value.Any Parent/Carer or Grandparent who would like to come to school and enjoy dinner with their children is welcome to do so. Just telephone the office before 10:00 am. on or before the school day* to reserve a meal. Please bring photo ID with you. Adult meals cost £3.40. A child’s meal costs £2.40. It is excellent value, and by educating children away from a diet of crisps and processed food we are together building a lifetime of good eating habits and healthy hearts.

DINNERS MUST BE PREPAID, no more than £2.40 will be accepted in arrears. Money must be sent to the classroom in a labelled envelope. PLEASE DO NOT SEND LOOSE MONEY. Each room has a post box through which letters and money (providing it is in a labelled sealed envelope) can be sent to the school office. Meals are advertised on the website and there is always the salad with two wraps option. Children can self serve salad, vegetables and fruit salad and can have second portions.

* Please note; there are occasions e.g at Christmas during the show week, and on sporting tournament days when it is not possible to accommodate extra adult guests at lunchtime. The same applies for the first five school days in September when the priority is to reestablish systems for our pupils particularly our new starters.

Continuing our International Journey of culinary delights “Around the World on a Plate” we have some specials, which our children can look forward to. Two of these feature a journey down under with Australia Day on Friday 26th January 2018: Australian BBQ Style Snags and Fries (sausages in rolls) followed by Australian Lamington Pudding

We shall also be having a special menu linked to our mystery international location on Friday 9th February 2018.

Anyone wishing to know the details of any allergens in any of our meals provided can get the information from the school kitchen.

Please telephone the normal school number 01482 861762 in order to be transferred.

Don’t forget that parent/carers and grandparents can come for

KEEPING SAFE WEEK A timely reminder

Every January in class and in assembly we focus on a particular aspect of safety. This year we are to repeat a look at the dangers present on line through computer and phone.

Cyber bullying and manipulation are easy traps for pupils to fall into at either end of the scale. It is so easy to underestimate the dangers that present themselves to children through on line contact and although this will shock parents pupils at our school have put themselves at risk in their homes despite all the e-safety education. Children from this school have also been contacted by unknown individuals in their home and there have been cases of cyber bullying.

I ask parents how certain they are regarding their children’s access to the internet? Banning it or pretending it doesn’t exist does not work. Children need supervision and education on how to use the internet safely.

Now would be a good time to look at the advice which our website links to; see the home page. It is so easy to presume all is well and protected when the reality is not.

FY STARTING SCHOOL IN 2018? The Application Window is now open.

Do you have a child aged 3 to 4 years old? Was your child born between September 1, 2013 and August 31, 2014? If so, then he/she should start school in September 2018. You can apply for a school place online NOW using the electronic form on the council’s website: www.eastriding.gov.uk or you can get an application form from the Admissions Team.

Application forms are available now. The deadline for receiving applications is 15th January 2018. You should make sure that you complete and return an application form online or a paper form to the Admissions Team at County Hall, Beverley by that date. If you have any questions please contact your local school or East Riding of Yorkshire Council: Admissions Team – telephone (01482) 392100

WHAT KATIE DID! We have heard that after auditioning in October, Katie Messenger has

been awarded associate membership of the National Children's

Orchestras and will join their Northerlies

audition was fabulous so she's done herself very

proud. We look forward to

hearing of her progress.

R GOVERNOR OF THE MONTH: Helen RossFollowing the 2016 Parent/Carer survey, it was suggested that in order to help parents to get a better knowledge of the governing body, a feature should be included in the newsletter.Thank you to Local Authority Governor: Mrs. Helen Ross for this month’s feature.

I am delighted to now be part of the Governing Body at Molescroft Primary, as it is a school I have been pleased to know for many years. A little known fact is that Mr Loncaster and I trained together as student teachers MANY years ago. Our paths have crossed on a number of occasions during our professional careers, but it was in 2008 when I joined the East Riding Local Authority as a School Improvement Adviser that my relationship with the school started. Molescroft was one of the schools I worked with closely during my 7 years with the LA, both as its improvement adviser and as part of the core group for the Teaching School. I have worked in primary education now for over 30 years, and in that time I have had the privilege to visit many schools in Hull, the East Riding and across the Yorkshire and Humber region. Some have been facing significant challenges and needed advice and support. Some were striving to be recognised as good. A smaller number had been judged by Ofsted as ‘Outstanding’. Molescroft is one of a very small number of schools that I would say is ‘truly outstanding’. The quality and richness of the curriculum experience at this school is exceptional. It has always been a pleasure to visit the school and see the wonderful work that happened here. As a governor I hope that I can contribute to making sure that this continues for many years to come.

MOLES AT LAUNCH OF TOUR DE YORKSHIRE Alice, Thomas, Rosie, Liam represent the County! Four Moles from Year 5 together with four children from St. Nicholas Primary School attended the official launch event for the Tour de Yorkshire 2018. As you can see from their tee shirts the children spelt out Beverley as it is to be the start of the event hosting the first leg through its streets twice on the same day. SWIMMING TEAM WINS BRONZE

Although the team came third in the overall competition there were a number of medal wins at the annual Sports Partnership Swimming Tournament. Seven teams from across Beverley attended; all fielding teams of twelve children (six girls/six boys) The children took part in a series of individual races: breast/back stroke, freestyle and front crawl. Then there were also some team relay races and a mixed medley race. All the children tried really hard and enjoyed the opportunity to take part; thanks to their hard work the school team took the bronze position.

Special mention should go to Jessica Morris in her first appearance in the swim squad; thanks to her speed and technique she took a gold medal in the finals for the Girl’s Front Crawl. Also congratulations to Lucy Towse- an old hand of our swim squad- who won two individual medals in the Girl’s Backstroke and Freestyle races.

Sadly this will be Lucy’s last appearance in the Molescroft Squad as, along with Angus and Georgina, she will be leaving us this year. Thank you to our Y6 veterans for their efforts over the years- I hope they keep swimming!

Thank you too to all our swimmers old and new and also to the parents for taking time out of their day to transport and support the children over the course of the morning. Well done to all-keep on swimming and hopefully we shall see some of you next year!

Jessica Morris took the Gold Medal in the Girls Front Crawl event.
