Tacoma Arts Museum ExtensionThe extension to the Tacoma Arts Museum was designed to mimic a walk through the woods. The original building was inspired by the accession of Mt. Rainier, it consists of a ramp enclosing an empty courtyard similar to a volcano. The extension consists of a similar ramp that encloses a thicket of aspen trees. The old saying “a forest trough the trees” holds true with this design. As a visitors begins their journey along the ramp they are given glimpses into the surroundings, both indoor and outdoor. The step hillside located under the building is also utilized to provide a pleasurable tree lined path to the street above or the parking lot below.

BOULEVARD LIGHTSA multi-family housing project near the ASU Tempe campus, intended for a mixed use of traditional students as well as students who have families. Set between a historic single family neighborhood and a busy urban street along the light rail track, the project steps down as it progresses towards the neighborhood so as to engage and relate to both aspects. Historically this street was the US 60 highway and was populated with motels and their neon lights. Boulevard Lights seeks to remember those references by lighting up the night in colored light. This project demonstrates the need to consider much more than just the project area while addressing the context of a site. The goal of this project was to find balance between two conflicting entities, to celebrate one while not overshadowing another.

ESCAPEEscape from the stresses of the day by relaxing in a secluded bath retreat. The tub is the focus of this design, intended to celebrate the joy of relaxation. Side light from either side, the tub is bathed in a soft diffuse glow of varying intensity as the day progresses. The purpose behind this project was to focus on designing a single space in order to gain a greater understanding of scale and detail, and the importance of them in good design.

AXIAL HOUSEAxial House was part of a design competition for the ARA (Arizona Residential Architects) and was an in-fill site in South Scottsdale. To respond to the Northeast orientation of the site the public spaces on the lower floor face the street to engage the neighborhood. The private space on the second floor are oriented East West to maximize solar angles and distinguish the private from the public. It ranked in the top ten of the competition and was displayed in an exhibition held for the competition. This project was the first project where there was no advisor to assist in the design, and was an opportunity to push myself to think about a project critically and develop more confidence in my designs.

TOWERS AND BURROWSTowers and Burrows is a sanctuary and observation pavilion for the Burrowing Owl. The owl nests in burrows underground and hunts by scouting its prey from elevated positions. The sanctuary was designed in a similar fashion. The pavilion is below grade and visitors descend a ramp with a short opening to portray the sense of being under ground. Additionally there are two towers located on either side of the site to allow visitors a chance to observe the owls and other desert life from above, giving them a similar experience to the Burrowing Owl. The idea of a strong parti was the outcome of this exercise, because of the particular parti of this project, it was a success.

Harmon HutThe Harmon Hut is a meeting place for the Boy and Girls Scouts of America organizations. It serves as a meeting place for the youth of the neighborhood can come and learn valuable life skills and have fun while doing it. The scouting organizations seek to provide youth with positive adult role models able to model the attitudes and attributes needed to succeed in life. They provide an introduction to a wide variety of subjects; from archery to astronomy, plumbing to computer programming. All of which is intended to inspire youth to push themselves beyond what the know. The Hut is inspired by a campsite in the woods, with shaded pathways reminiscent of a forest hike. A wide meadow for playing games, and outdoor meeting places provide a plenty of room to gather. The Hut sits with in the site designed to both draw attention and also blend in with its surroundings. The tensegrity canopy overhead provides shade across the site while providing a fun and interesting site to view.

SHADESHADE is the house design for the Solar Decathlon 2013 from team aSUNm, a collaboration between Arizona State University and the University of New Mexico. I participated in the project as a design team member and the Health and Safety officer. The concept of the project is Solar Homes Adapting for Desert Equilibrium, meaning that the house is fine tuned to exist in the Sonoran environment. It employs a solar canopy as a shading device to assist in cooling the space, as well as power generator, and facilitating a sense of community. The interior is also designed to serve multiple functions to allow it to adapt to occupants needs. Additional content is available at http://asunm.org/ including an animation at http://asunm.org/shade-animation. This on-going project has given me an opportunity to work in collaboration with other designers as well as students in other disciplines. It has also provided opportunities to develop a project beyond what is normally possible in school. Additionally I have been able to expand my knowledge and understanding of architecture as a whole, and the work that is required of architects.

After the Solar Decathlon SHADE made its way back to Phoenix. It was reassembled on a vacant lot of land in downtown Phoenix, and became part of the Phoenix Renews initiative. In connection with Phoenix Renews the Clinton Global nitiative used the site for a day of service, where SHADE served as a headquarters for the VIPs including President Bill Clinton, and Mayor Greg Stanton. To view a video about SHADE’s preparation for the event visit http://vimeo.com/90253429.
