Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year (by Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school)! There is no safe number of days for missing school each day a student misses puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Coming to school every day is vital, but if for any reason your child must miss school, there are things we can do together to ensure they don’t fall behind. So if your family needs assistance in this regard, please contact the Office and we will arrange for someone to talk to. Punctuality is the characteristic of being able to complete a required task or fulfil an obligation before or at a previously designated time. [1] "Punctual" is often used synonymously with "on time". It is wonderful that many informal parent / teacher meetings happen before the bell (with all teachers available in their classrooms from 8:50 every morning) and I encourage parents who need to speak with our teachers at length to please understand that teachers can’t continue such meetings after 9:00am, as our priority is, as it should be, teaching your children. With our classroom instruction starting immediately at 9:00am this is where the students find out what they will be learning for the day (“WALT” – What Are we Learning Today”) and tune in immediately to their first learning activity. Students who arrive late miss out on this and it is very challenging of them to find out what they are expected to do, it can also cause much anxiety for the late student. Punctuality is a solid virtue and I ask that parents please support their child in arriving on time to school. A reminder that firstly all late arrivals must be “signed in” by an adult via the kiosk in the office foyer and then the printed “late pass” given to the teacher upon arrival at class. To randomly reward children who are punctual to school, listen carefully for the music of Get Smart. Kids, if you hear this television theme song and your name, you must make it to the Office before the song finishes. Your reward will be ‘Pancakes From The Principal’ a voucher for the Pancake Parlour. (Congratulations to Lachlan B, Jack W, Jamie B and Luke T - punctual pupils this week who will receive a voucher at tomorrow’s Assembly). SCHOOL COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT Next Tuesday 24th March Blackburn Lake Primary School Council will be presenting its Annual Report to the community. This Report is currently being finalised through referencing informati on from our school’s Performance Summary 2014’, which was sent to me last week by the State Government. This ‘Performance Summary 2014’ on our school will be posted online by the Department of Education and Training (DET) in the coming weeks, with all state school results (‘Performance Summaries’) to enable parents to see how their child/ren’s school is going; whilst offering comparisons to other local schools. The meeting will be commencing at 7:30pm (with all community members welcome to attend) and we will be reporting on the performance over 2014, with respect to Strategic Plan areas of Achievement, Engagement, Wellbeingand Productivity. Please be advised that this report will also be made available next month (after DET ratification) on the school website. Immediately following the Report, we will be holding our first new School Council Meeting at 8:00pm and welcoming in our newest parent members: Brendon Glenk, Darren Puschenjak, David Spong, Jennifer Robertson, as well as returning parent members Andrew Baugh, Mark Eaton, Duncan Hare, Lisa Croxford, Maya Cordiero and Vivienne Saunders. JASON’S JOURNAL – The Principal’s Message

We all want our students to enjoy a great education, and the building blocks for a great education is “time on task”. WORKING BEE Last Saturday we had a good turnout for the Working Bee. Families had a very enjoyable day and were able to meet some new faces whilst at the same time contributing to the improvement of the school. On the day we were able to achieve some significant improvements, in particular, the creation of new garden beds on the southern side of the Prep building. As well as a general tidy up of the yard, other tasks completed on the day included: topping up gravel pathways, spreading mulch across garden beds and installation of a boat in the sandpit (this new attraction has not only been a hit with the kids in terms of a place to play, but certainly fits the bill being next to Blackburn Lake!). I thank Nicola and Chris Gray for sourcing the boat and seek name suggestions for this new feature. If you’d like to name the boat, please write your name, your class, and your idea on a piece of paper – putting it in to the entry box next to the kiosk in the Office Foyer by the end of this term.

I would like to publicly thank the following families (some of them pictured in our new playground attraction) for their hard work and contribution to the school on the day: the Acs, Baugh, Foley, Gallagher, Gough, Gray, Liew, McNeil, and Shuttleworth families; congratulating the Puschenjak family on winning the Lunar Drive-In movie ticket raffle. I also appreciate the staff efforts of Diane Aldred and Gay Burnett, with special thanks to our “maintenance man” Dean Conman for his organisation on the day.

VOLUNTEERS Earlier this week I met with the Class (Parent) Representatives, and this chat reminded me how fortunate we are at BLPS to have some willing and supportive parents. (Understanding that not all parents are able to

assist) we have an enormous number of parents and friends who contribute to the school in so many ways: as well as being members of the PA and organising fun activities and fundraising events, there are those who assist by attending excursions and special events, working in the Canteen and Uniform Shop, managing Student Banking, attending Working Bees, working in the classrooms, and much, much more. A reminder to parents who volunteer (or wish to in the future) for excursions and other such events, that we require a current Working with Children Check. If you would like to arrange one please call past the Post Office and pick up an application, or alternately you can complete an online application by following this link, http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/wwccu/onlineapplication.doj STUDENT LEADERS

Congratulations to our School Captains, Victoria and Henry, along with Lauren and Aiden, who do an excellent job in leading our school Assembly each Friday afternoon. Last Friday these four students attended the National Young Leaders Day conference in the city, and will report about their findings at tomorrow’s Assembly. Currently at a leadership conference myself (with the school’s Leadership Team at the Maroondah and Whitehorse network) - and with the level 6 students competing in District Summer Interschool Sports - I am confident that our students stepping up tomorrow will lead the weekly whole school Assembly @ 3pm with skill (and with support of Suellen Hall and other staff).

Warm regards, Jason Walker - Principal [email protected]

Good luck to the members of Team Layla, running in this Sunday’s 'Run For the Kids'. Our Student School Council are meeting next

Tuesday to organise a free dress day for the final day of term, fundraising for the Royal Children’s Hospital – stay tuned!

LEADERSHIP DAY - School & Vice Captains

On the 13th March the School and Vice Captains (Henry, Victoria, Aiden and Lauren) all headed to the city to attend Young National Leaders day. Young National Leader’s Day, is a day were students come from all around Victoria to listen to a range of speakers at the convention centre in Melbourne. The purpose is to guide and inspire the future leaders of Australia. Bindi Irwin was defiantly one of the favourite speakers! She told us, “To be a good Leader you don’t have to be the boss, but you have to work as a team!” She told us about how she follows in her dads footsteps, and saves wild animals especially crocodiles! Even though we arrived late because of photos and missed a bit of Bindi’s speech, we still got heaps out of it! - Lauren One of my favourite speakers was Andy Griffiths. His presentation revolved around how first impressions are everything. One of my favourite quotes he said was “from the simplest things, come the greatest ideas”. He showed us an example of a toy dinosaur and a toy baby and explained that there are so many things that he could write about just using simple toys. He told us that brainstorming is the key for expanding your ideas. - Henry Jessica Gallagher’s, another speaker’s speech was probably the most inspiring one. She had impaired vision when she was young, now she only has 7% vision. She is a Paralympian Skier and has achieved many, VERY high standards. I learned from jess that to be the best, you don’t have to be perfect - Victoria Another speaker was 17 year old Coen Ashton. He spoke to us about how he had cystic fibroses and said “the only word I don’t know is impossible”. His achievements so far include jet skiing down the Murray River in 7 weeks while he suffered from his disease and then in 7 days once he had received his lung transplants. Coen has also, won young Australian of the year, not letting his disability interfere with his dreams. - Aiden We all had TONES of fun and hope that next year’s School and Vice Captains have just as much fun as we did.

A dry plastic comb

An indoor tap

A head full of clean dry hair.

1. Turn on the tap and slowly turn down the water until you have a VERY thin stream of water flowing.

2. Take the plastic comb and brush it through your hair ten times.

3. Now slowly bring the comb close the flowing water, (without actually touching the water)

If all goes well, the stream of water should bend towards the comb! Magic you ask? Not really.

When you brushed that comb through your hair, tiny parts of the atoms in your hair, called ELECTRONS,

collected on the comb. These electrons have a NEGATIVE charge. Remember that, it’s important. Now

that the comb has a negative charge, it is attracted to things that have a POSITIVE charge. It is similar

to the way some magnets are attracted to certain metals.

When you bring the negatively charged comb near the tap it is attracted to the POSITIVE force of the

water. The attraction is strong enough to actually pull the water towards the comb as it is flowing!

If you want to try another experiment with your comb, tear up pieces of tissue until they are as a small as

you can get them...I mean really small! Then charge your comb again by brushing it through your hair,

and bring it close to the tiny pieces of tissue. If the pieces are small enough they will jump off the table

to the comb the same way that the water was pulled to the comb. It is all thanks to the wonders of

static electricity.

AMAZING ART ARTICLES FOAM PRINTING BY GRADE 3 ARTISTS Grade 3s have been learning about the history of Block Printing before creating their own block print out of Styrofoam. Carving their drawing was tricky as the Styrofoam tore and broke easily. The students learned how to roll on the paint evenly and made successful prints onto newspaper first and then onto fabric. The fabric will be used to make cushions. These will be on display in the Art Show during

Education Week in May. You can see the foam prints on display in the school main corridor.

SCHOOL BANKING - Every WEDNESDAY is School Banking Day

Taking part in School Banking is easy If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. If not, you can open one at any Commonwealth Bank branch, or if you are an existing customer with the bank with access to NetBank you can open the account online. Alternatively, we have application forms - just come and get one from us on School Banking Day.

How School Banking works Every Wednesday, make sure you have your bank book and money ready for school banking, and

complete a deposit slip. At the start of the school day, bank books are collected in a grey satchel and sent to the Staffroom. The School Banking team will collect the money and deposit slips, and then return the books to the

classroom teacher via their pigeonholes. The team will process the deposits and send the money to the nearest branch. Any reward redemptions will be ordered by the team and items should be delivered to the classroom

teachers in 1-2 weeks.

Rewards Program 2015 To encourage regular savings behaviour the program offers an exciting Rewards Program. Every deposit earns your child a Dollarmites token, and once they’ve collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for a reward. We will be putting redemption cards into your bank books in the next few weeks so you will be ready to order your Term 1 reward when you have 10 tokens. The rewards items available during 2015 are:

The prize includes return airfares, five nights’ accommodation, transfers and 3 days park entry for up to two adults and two kids, as well as AUD$2000 spending money. For further competition details, visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking

Volunteers needed We need some help! The program requires volunteers to facilitate the banking and distribution of rewards. This only takes an hour, once every 3 weeks on a Wednesday morning, and involves counting up the money, entering the amounts into the online portal, and taking the money to the bank. If you would like to help out, please contact Vickie on 0419 773 335. Thank you for supporting the School Banking Program! Vickie L | School Banking Coordinator | Contact: 0419 773 335

Knock Knock, We need new Knickers and Knocker

Holders!!

We have been approached by the Safe Futures Foundation who work with women and children

who have experienced Family Violence. One of the things they do is to assist families who have

had to leave their home in order to protect themselves. No-one wants to wear borrowed or

used knickers or bra’s at any time, but especially when you have had to leave behind so much and

may be feeling really sad. In order to provide some nice personal comforts, Safe Futures

Foundation provides families with as much as possible to start over. They are currently in

desperate need of NEW underpants for Girls, Boys and Women, and NEW bras. Safe Futures

Foundation ask for a variety of sizes, from petite to buxom, so talk to each other and see what

sizes are missing!

A washing basket will be located in the reception of the school for you to pop in your

KNICKERS AND KNOCKER HOLDERS!

Thankyou in advance for all your help!

“Be a SUPERHERO FOR AUTISM Superhero Fun Run

29th March 2nd April (World Autism Day)

What does Irabina do? Irabina is Victoria’s largest provider of much needed services and support programs to over 15,000 families living with Autism today. Irabina Childhood Autism Services specialise in delivering programs for children and adolescents diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. We are the largest Autism specific service in Australia, and have been providing services for the past 45 years. We recognise that having Autism not only affects the child but affects the whole family and therefore all programs delivered are family centred. We work alongside families to provide Autism education and skills to assist the children and parents or carers on their journey.

Why Superheroes? Most children love superheroes at some time in their lives. Many people with Autism, however, have almost a fixation with Superheroes that extends way past childhood and well into their adult lives. It gives them a pillar to lean on. A superhero is often perceived as stronger, more resourceful, smarter, faster and more resilient than others around him. Many people on the Autism Spectrum are non-verbal and are unable to articulate what they need, making them some of our community’s most vulnerable, and needing a helping hand or rescue.
