THE SOFT SIDE OF A WORLD CLASS ATHLETEBy Mihály Orendi

www.gerely.hu JAVELIN THROW MAGAZINEIssue: I./dec.31.2010

Every successful athlete has a family, friends, and supportsystem set up that allows them to compete in a high level. Iknow Barbora Špotáková since she was 2 years old (1982).Barunka, as we call her among friends, is a truly soft spoken, kind and loving person. Not too many people know that she hasstrong Hungarian roots by her father’s side. While growing up,Barbora learned a lot from her family about cultures, languages(speak English very well) and values for life(speak English very well), and values for life.

Barbora and her Family (Liduska – her mother,Frantisek her father, and Dalibor her brother)spend a lot of time together. As a side note,Dalibor is used to be a very good decathlete whobeat many times the world recordholder RomanŠebrle (see Dalibor in the middle of picture).( p )

The total surprise for those who only knowBarbora as a javelin thrower: she holds the Czehrecord in Decathlon for woman!

young Czeh javelin throwers for futureolympics. Through the javelin camps, wherethe youngest throwers receive a personaltouch from the world record holder, youngathletes receive not only an education ofbasic skills /drills, but a strong focus on theright thinking. When people see Czehjavelin throwers on top, no questions askedjavelin throwers on top, no questions askedabout how it happened. Luck is based onlong years of preparation, and not just shorttraining camps.

We all whish Barbora a new world record for2011! Her new coach, another worldrecordholder will be behind her every throw, eco d o de be be d e e e y o ,who is the Great Czeh javelin thrower JanŽelezný.

We can’t wait to have Barbora and Jan nextyear in our training camp in Debrecen,Hungary!

Proposed changes would finally take effect in 1986, following another twosizable improvements to the javelin world record; the first coming in 1983, when Tom Petranoff, then of the United States, added precisely three meters to Paragi's mark, and the other in 1984,when East German Uwe Hohn launched the 800 gram implement to 104.80 meters.

Hohn's mark only came after the new design had already been officially proposed, and contraryto a popular myth had nothing to do with the change. Even though his form had dipped a bit afteranother monster mark of 96.20 on May 18, there could be no question he was among theleading favorites. However, the Olympics were for him a major disappointment. He hadproblems already in the qualification, languishing more than five meters from a spot in the finalsafter two rounds with a sub-standard mark of 72.60, but saved himself by throwing 88.76 withhis third and final attempt – the best mark in the whole qualifying competition by almost threemeters. Next day in the final however, he could do no better than 79.52 and had to be contentwith a tenth place finish. His qualification performance would have been enough for a bronze.p q p g

AN INTERVIEW WITH FERENC PARAGI

What is your involvement with Heracles Youth Javelin Throw program in Hungary?

I am the head of javelin throw youth develoment program in Hungary since January20009. We select the talented throwers from the ages of 15-18. There are 8 throwerscurrently in the program.

This number seem to be low from such a country where back in the 1970s and 1980s the Hungarianthrowers dominated the world (there were at least 10 throwers over 80m in 1980). What is happeningwith the ‘once extremely strong’ Hungarian Javelin Throwers?

B k i th ld h d t h ! Wh t i h i ? W h l fBack in the golden years, we had many great coaches! What is happening now? We have only a fewtrue javelin throw coaches, many clubs closed to financial difficulties, coaches with good understandingare half as many as they were in the old days. The minimum base salary in Hungary is around bruttó$350 a month. The good javelin cost anywhere from $1,200, javelin shoes $200, and you need thefields to throw. We have kids coming out to the field, but many times, this is after as the handball andwaterball sport clubs took the kids with good physical and athletic background. We need to be better atselecttion of a young age.

Any Hungarian Javelin Thrower hope for the future Olympics?I can see the end of the tunnel. Just to note: Hungary is dominating the world in water poolo. Still, wehope that within a couple of years, we will have a better thrower base for competing internationally.

Budapest, December 29, 2010.

www.gerely.hu JAVELIN THROW MAGAZINEIssue: I./dec.31.2010

Braian Toledo first made a name for himself at the 2009 World Youth Championships in Brixen,Italy. In a very tight final on July 23, Toledo languished in 7th place until round five, when he threwa new personal best of 73.44 metres.(World Youth Championships 2009 - Results 07-12-2009 -Javelin Throw (700g) m Final )This was enough to win him the bronze against boys a year older, just 56 centimetres from gold.[6]

After that his results improved extremely rapidly. In July he took the silver medal at the 2009 SouthAmerican Junior Championships and then won the gold medal in the 2009 Pan American JuniorAmerican Junior Championships and then won the gold medal in the 2009 Pan American JuniorAthletics Championships, throwing a new age-15 world best of 69.84m with the men's 800 gramimplement. Later in the year, he made large improvements to his personal best with the youthjavelin, with his eventual best mark of 79.25, thrown in Córdoba on October 11, the top mark thatyear among throwers born in 1993 or later.

He then made a hugeimprovement to the world best on March 6, 2010 in Mar del Plata, throwing a new record of 89.34,again on his first attempt. This mark was some 25 metres up from his personal best just a yearbefore.

TurboJav: Making Javelin Throw Popular for School Programs

"Fresh and hot out of the box," as Tom Petranoff could say in his TurboJav commercialfor the newly developed special javelin made mainly for trainings. The new TurboJavweighs 700 and 800 gramm, just as much as the man’s competition javelin, and itslength is 180cm. The former American javelin world recordholder (1983, 99.72m), whotook over the world record from the Hungarian Ferenc Paragi by 3 meters, has finallyrealized his dream.

The 52 year old Petranoff, just as Miklós Németh develops his own trade mark under’Nemeth javelin’, continuously works on new product development. The new productbrings safety, not to mention durability. Just for the record: TurboJav typically comes in

t lli l d it i d f HDPE l th l d i f d bl d lmetallic colors and it is made of HDPE polyethylene and is safe durable and longlasting. What needs to be done in the future? As Tom Petranoff would say: "The javelinthrowing community must get kids young and attract them to our sport.”For more info, go to: http://www.turbojav.com

Thomas ("Tom") Alan Petranoff (born April 8, 1958 in Aurora, Illinois)is a former world record holder in the javelin throw; his May 1983 effortwas greater than the length of an entire American football field at 99.72meters (327'2") Tom Petranoff's world record added precisely three

meters (327'2"). Tom Petranoff's world record added precisely threemeters to the previous global standard of 96.72, set in 1980 byHungary's Ferenc Paragi. Petranoff's prodigious effort fueled furtherdiscussion and speculation regarding the likelihood of alterations to thejavelin's design and flight characteristics. Propelled by the need toshorten distances and the then frequent flat or ambiguous landings(which resulted in many controversial official judgements), a change toa new design finally took effect in April 1986 By then East Germana new design finally took effect in April 1986. By then, East GermanUwe Hohn had shattered Petranoff's mark with an incredible throw of104.80 meters. However, this only came after the changes had beenofficially proposed and (unlike Petranoff's record and contrary to apopular myth) had nothing to do with the change.

Petranoff's mark with the old javelin design was never exceeded by any throw other than Hohn'smonster mark. He also did well with the new design; his personal best of 89.16, thrown atPotchefstroom South Africa on March 1 1991 was at the time the second best ever (excludingPotchefstroom, South Africa on March 1, 1991, was at the time the second best ever (excludingmarks thrown with a soon illegalized "rough-tailed javelin" that had been introduced by MiklósNémeth), behind only Steve Backley's world record of 89.58, and as of 2009 has still only beenexceeded by 12 throwers.

In 1984, Petranoff won The Superstars championship with a record score of 61 points. Hequalified for the United States Olympic Team, but finished a disappointing 9th in the final in LosAngeles A native of Illinois Petranoff later became a citizen of South Africa and competed forAngeles. A native of Illinois, Petranoff later became a citizen of South Africa and competed forthat country in various international competitions.

Petranoff is also the inventor of the "Turbo Javelin." This implement is used for javelin practice, especially of the indoor kind. Made of heavy duty plastic and a rubber tip, the turbo javelin isvery safe and ideal for indoor practice, and makes a good substitute for younger throwers as theofficial javelin can be dangerous. It is now used in its own competitions for people of all agesand is great for recreation departments and much more The world record holder with the turboand is great for recreation departments and much more. The world record holder with the turbojavelin is Breaux Greer of the U.S.A. Petranoff now lives in Rhode Island; he has coached forinstitutions such as Boston University.

We now have all 3 sizes for our new models. They are all 6 feet long or 1.80 meters. They are verydurable for most surfaces like turbojavs. Can be thrown indoors into nets and walls. Sharp edgesj p gwill dent or damage surface and do not recommend any our products thrown onwood floors. In 20years of making turbojavs, the only surface we have had issue is with wood floors. Please advisecustomers we do not replace wood floor breakage on any of our products. We do not get manyreturns. Most are from wood floors or very hard surfaces like asphalt or concrete.

THE MOST IMPORTANT IS TO CHECK FOR LOOSENING ON THREADS. AS YOU THROW THEY WILL SOMETIMES LOOSEN....THEY MUST HAVE SOLID TIGHT FIT

The 800 gram is blue in color only for 2011The 700 gram is purple for 2011The 600 gram comes in pink or orange for 2011

The best feature of this new series is that you get immediate feedback when you throw theturbojavelin as it will wobble if you throw wrong. If your throw correctly --the spier will fly straight intight spiral and fly far. If it wobbles it stalls in the air from turbulence and drops like a rock. We didnot realize it until we did testing and it was unreal how it helps you understand, that you must throwit with your shoulder and not your elbow. Good for all levels to learn. The biggestmisunderstanding of javelin throwing is how to get power threw the point. We now have productthat teaches you where the pull must be and over your center of gravity. This is our best innovationin years and will help many throwers find the throwing zone. If anyone wants any more info...emailme or call me. Thanks....

PROLOGUE

I have been wanting to write a really good--- honest ---book on my life experiences and my 50 plus years of throwing .This biography is really to tell stories and share my life with you. To say thanks toeveryone who was involved in my success. There were many. To be honest -- I was only as good as the people around me. I have some really good people that paved the way for me to throw far. A big thanks to all. My name is Bulgarian from my fathers side. My grandfather left Bulgaria on boat when the Russians in aded and ent to ellis island and joined the arm He as a medic and became doctorinvaded and went to ellis island and joined the army. He was a medic and became doctorinIndianapolis and practiced for 50 plus years. My dad was born in Indianapolis and met my momat University of Illinois,She was twin daughter of railroad worker from Chicago. I was born in the USA, aurora il. Married a Canadian, had two girls born in USA and two born in Africa. What can I say. It's complicated. I have so many stories that I need to tell before I forget. Some stories may make youcringe. Some stories will blow your mind and some, I am not proud of. This is my story but about many people efforts to help me reach my goal. To be the best I could be. I have met many people andtraveled to every corner of the earth. I have met many good people. There are so many I have to list them at end of book This book will share the training and technical side of my throwing with thethem at end of book. This book will share the training and technical side of my throwing with thehuman side of how I learned to throw 327 feet and compete for years with no injuries. The only injury Ihad was in high school football. Got c lipped on kick off and tore all ligaments and cartilage. Played thewhole game as I was quarterback and middle linebacker and punter and kicker. Next day I go to orthopedic surgeon and he can't believe I am not in pain and next day surgery the old fashion way.....10 inch scare on leg... 35 years later and still walking. I am probably the only javelin thrower not to have any throwing related surgery. The reason??? I will share that with you and how my wife, my family, my coaches and friends like Mark Eldridge, Bill Webb, Dick Held, Juris Terauds and many others helped me become a world class athlete I will share my 30 years of traveling the world Jurisothers helped me become a world class athlete. I will share my 30 years of traveling the world. Jurisstudied me years with high speed cameras and bio mechanics data on the old javelin and new javelin. He will tell his story and share that data with us. This book is not just about javelin throwing. Its about trials and tribulation of life in the fast lane. It's about politics too. It's about how I spent 10 years in Africa and went against the hypocrisy in sports. Its about winning and loosing. This book is for all athletes and coaches who want to know what it takes tobe world class athlete. The training, the hard work, the right mind set to persevere in this crazy worldwe live in So here we go Hold on to your seat This is going to be wild ride Especially with my ADD

we live in. So here we go. Hold on to your seat. This is going to be wild ride. Especially with my ADD. ADHD or whatever I was born with in 1958. I was 12 yrs old when they were stil l in clinical trials for ritalin (add drug). Too late for me. Anyway, enjoy the book. This is a great story and it is way overdue. You will notice my music titles along the way. I was into music with my walkman and it helped me trainand get in the zone. My training was enhanced by music and my traveling and relaxation were too.Thank god for walkmans cassettes.

From the beginning---Emerson Lake and Palmer--

I've seen all good people---- Yes My life started in Aurora Illinois April 8th 1958. We were raised in Naperville Il linois when it was small town of 4000 people. I have two brothers Dave and Jim. who were rough on edges in the beginning but excepted me for who I was, both good and bad. My dad was airl ine pilot for American. We were never close and I regret that. My mom was stay at home socialite and really good cook. Both died recently in 2008. I was close to mom and brothers but my never with my dad. As a boy I was alwaysinterested in sports and throwing anything or kicking anything that was doable. Rocks, apples, bricks, snow balls, and all sports related implements. By 4-5 years old I was hooked on football and b b ll D d f b i NFL t b k MLB it h I t ki k l dbaseball. Dreamed of being NFL quarterback or MLB pitcher. I won punt pass kick every year, played little league, pop warner football, basketball until high school and golf was our family sport. I really enjoyed my life growing up until my parents and playing golf. They divorced in early 70's andthis broke my heart and sole. That was my first real tragedy in life and wake up call to reality of life. I grew up fast and little wild and rough on edges. We were tough as kids. We walked 3 miles to school since I was 6 and in all weather. Walked back home after school sports. We did not watch TV much.We played outside rode bikes, climbed everything, went into sewers, did things that make that me

i O t t d h f di b d k h t t l i ht W did t liftcringe. Our parents expected us home for dinner by dark or when street l ights came on. We did not lift weights or have a structured training, but in reality we were cross training for the future. I had hugeenergy reserves and we had lots of fun no matter what we did. By the time I got to high school, we were slipping into the dark side of society with recreational drugsetc. No dad at home or mom ,who was now working and trying to survive as single parent, It isamazing we survived this period. It was the worst part of my life . We were stupid and some good friends of mine died in the process. I was offered a scholarship to Howe academy in 1975 and graduated in 1976. Before I left , I met my wife at Naperville Central high school in American history class the first day she came from Canada......... and my life now had a partner and purpose. We havetogether 35 years and still married after 26 years. Not common in USA or anywhere else for thatmatter. We have raised 4 beautiful girls. Two born in California and two in south Africa. Shannon 25 Whitney 23 Leigh 20 Kelly 17. My family is awesome and my first priority. Period. I believe we aregood parents and enjoy raising them big time. Now that they are older and leaving, it is Hard for momto see them go but easy for me as they are adults now and we did our best to raise them. Four girls is not easy. They say that each child cost $250,000 to raise to 18 years old. Ouch. What were wethinking?? Obviously we were not aware of the cool million we would need. Some how we did it.Yahooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!
