Venues throughout the city will be packed to the rafters as music fans flock to catch some of the biggest names in jazz, blues, jive, swing and dance, in what has become Irelands biggest jazz extravaganza. And this year, as we showcase all things cultural, the programme is even more eclectic, featuring performances by premier acts from across Ireland, Europe and beyond.

Headlining this year will be vibrant vocal harmony stars The Overtones, the UKs hottest harmony group, whose blend of barbershop brilliance has been taking the charts by storm. They head an amazing line up of artists who will have you dancing in the streets - literally - as the fun spills over from the many venues that welcome jazz fans from around the world for a good dose of Derry hospitality. The festival gives music lovers the chance to enjoy a tasting menu of talent, from rockabilly to big band. And as well

as seeing the return of some festival favourites, there will be plenty of new talent to impress regular festival goers.

Enjoy a blast from the past with this years vintage theme, culminating in a fabulous Vintage Ball with music by the amazing Puppini Sisters a great excuse to slip on some classic couture and join in the fun. With a special vintage market and car rally, the weekend will be a celebration of all things chic and stylish, lending a special retro vibe to the events.

Also playing over the weekend are the sensational Soul Rebels and Pink Martini as well as a whole plethora of visiting artists, the festival very much remains a showcase for Derrys own home grown musical talent, with performances by some of the citys premier musicians.

With free entry to over 90% of the events, all you have to do is warm up those jazz hands and take an unforgettable tour of musical talent.



One of the UKs biggest vocal harmony groups, The Overtones, will be heading up the cast of amazing artists set to descend upon the city and set the walls ringing to the tune of over 1000 instruments.

The festival has established itself as a real highlight for artists on the jazz circuit, with musicians returning annually to enjoy the warm hospitality and local craic. From festival favourites the energetic Jive Aces, fresh from impressing the judges on last years Britains Got Talent, to rousing Rockabilly revellers Carmen Ghia and the Hotrods. Not to mention the magnificent Brass Impact Big Band, whose 21 strong rhythm and blues band never fails to make an impression.

This year we also welcome back many familiar faces, including Greggi G and his Crazy Gang, one of the best jump and jive bands in the business, and the Kings of Rhythm, who never fail to raise the roof.

Closer to home we have an exciting mix of musical talent, from gifted local pianist John Leighton, to internationally acclaimed Blues artist Mike Wilgar and his band. And this year the festival is delighted to join local jazz octogenarian Gay McIntyre in celebrating his 80th birthday, and his 12th year starring at the event. Gays name is synonymous with City of Derry Jazz, and once again he will be one of the main attractions.

With so many big names looking forward to revisiting the festival this year, music lovers will as always be spoiled for choice - the only difficulty will be fitting it all into one weekend!

Mayors Charity Event with the Jive AcesThe Jazz festivities swing into action on Thursday with an opening party to remember, featuring three of the best acts to grace the programme. On Thursday the dynamic Derry Soul Seekers, will be joined by the rousing Red Stripe Band and the jumpin Jive Aces for a musical celebration embracing blues, jump, jive, swing and rhythm that will have you dancing the night away.

All proceeds from this event will go towards the Mayors annual charity fund in aid of Foyle Search and Rescue.

Soul RebelsIf jazz music is the heart of New Orleans, then the Soul Rebels music is the blood that pumps through the citys veins. They embrace the rich jazz traditions of their homeland but add life-affirming vocals and hip shaking grooves aplenty.

Couple those elements of funk, ska and hip-hop, with harmony vocals and more catchy horn lines and solos than you can imagine possible, and you have a party band like no other with an infectious energy thats impossible to resist.

The Dark Energy TrioDouble bass supremo Alan Niblock will be taking to the Playhouse stage, where he will be accompanied by top saxophonist Paul Dunmall and drummer Mark Sanders. The Trio, who channel their talents into the specialized art of improvisation, in their own words take their influence from the mysteries of dark energy by investigating and exploring the musical possibilities of this phenomenon. One not to be missed.

The OvertonesThe Overtones have been taking the album charts by storm since they unleashed their vocal harmony talents on the world in 2010.

The fantastic five-piece have already notched up a number of chart hits, and are a regular feature on our TV screens well with those looks theyd be wasted on radio!

The handsome quintet have come a long way since their painting and decorating days, where they were spotted by a talent scout singing during their tea break, before launching them on the path to stardom. Since then their unique harmonisations of old and modern day hits have landed the lads a five album deal with Warner, and made them a bit of a household name.

The groups sound can be traced right back to the vocal harmony groups of the 30s and 40s, through the stars of the doo-wop explosion of the late 50s and 60s, right through to classic modern day pop music.

DLD Second Line Jazz WorkshopThe DLD Second Line Jazz Workshop is a free two-hour performance-based workshop presented by Second Line NI and the JayDee Brass Band in preparation for the DLD Second Line Jazz Parade on Saturday, 4 May 2013. The workshop will cover an instrument-specific sectional and full ensemble rehearsal lead by members of the JayDee Brass Band. This event is open to instrumentalists aged 18 and under and gives our young musicians the opportunity to work closely with international jazz professionals.

David Lyttle featuring Jason RebelloAnyone reading a biography of David Lyttle couldnt fail to be impressed by the whos who of the music industry that the local artist has been in collaboration with in recent years. The drummer first reached a national audience with guitar legend Louis Stewart, and since then he hasnt looked back. His work has been constantly evolving from the folk music influences of his childhood, to the more urban jazz inspired songs featured on his latest album Interlude.

This year David brings with him the iconic pianist Jason Rebello, known for his work with Wayne Shorter and his long association with Sting. They will be accompanied by Damian Evans, arguably Irelands most in-demand bassist, and the trio will be showcasing the hard-swinging contemporary jazz that has made David a household name in Irish jazz for the past decade.

Brass Impact Big BandIf youre hoping to enjoy a full on big band experience, then look no further than this 21-piece musical extravaganza.

One of Scotlands favourite music acts, Brass Impact whose members span the generations, aged from 20-60 - play an eclectic mix of jazz, motown, big band and modern day music, all blasted to the rooftops in true big band style. Their old style arrangements of contemporary favourites by the likes of Michael Buble, Lionel Richie, and even Amy Winehouse are a guaranteed draw for music fans of all ages.

The music is backing track free, just a fresh and exciting live musical performance spanning ten decades of amazing tunes.

Dana Masters BandOriginally from the US, internationally renowned jazz and soul vocalist Dana Masters has set up home in Ireland, adding a touch of class and authenticity to the local jazz scene. The Jazz Festival is delighted to showcase the talents of a performer who is a tour de force in the industry.

Classic numbers like At Last, combined with Midnight Train to Georgia, delivered in her trademark velvet tones, always find favour with local audiences. And set to the soulful accompaniment of great American saxophonist Meilana Gillard, and with local jazz stalwart Linley Hamilton on trumpet, this is sure to be an evening to remember.

Celtronic presents Ben KlockTechno fans will be flocking to catch Berlin born DJ, producer and label owner Ben Klock, who is without doubt one of the most significant figures in technos recent history.

A resident at Berghain since its opening in 2004, Klock has been able to leave his mark on the clubs unique sound, with sets full of hypnotic, deep and heavy grooves. Ben Klocks name is synonymous with the vitalization of an essential definition of techno, and his set will be an unmissable experience for enthusiasts at the cutting edge of the music scene.

Kids Love Jazz 2! SureStart EdenballymoreCalling all junior jazz lovers why not come along and join in all the fun of the festival and enjoy a FREE, jazz and ska music event, specially for kids. This dynamic, black and white themed event will be an entertaining and interactive afternoon for all the family to enjoy. As well as some swinging tunes, the fun black and white baby area is a special treat! Expect lots of entertaiment, music and movement.

Jazz goes al fresco Young musicians from local colleges will play a series of outdoor gigs in the Guildhall Square, giving the oldies a run for their money and reclaiming jazz music as a genre for the younger generation. They will be keeping the audiences entertained with some al fresco fun throughout the weekend.

The teens will be joined by a number of regular festival favourites, who will take to the outdoor stage to give music lovers a taster of whats to come in the evening the perfect way to blow away the cobwebs from the night before.

And from jazz therapy to retail therapy, the Walled City Market will be up and running in the Guildhall Square. The market is the ideal spot to stop off and sample some home cooked fayre, and choose the perfect souvenir to take home from your jazz weekend.

Beverley Craven

Beverley Cravens hits are synonymous with the 90s, when her heartrending and soulful love songs Promise Me, Holding On and Woman to Woman landed her Brit Award acclaim and double platinum album sales.

Back now on her 2013 Spring tour, Beverley will be performing at the Jazz Festival with a pared down acoustic line up and stripped back production, that perfectly showcases her voice and the confessional style of her songs.

Throughout the set Beverley shares her story from the past twelve years with her audience, talking candidly about the life experiences which have shaped her music. This is a show filled with nostalgia, and one which is guaranteed to entertain and move in equal measure.

Rockabilly FestIn 2012 the Craft Village was a hive of rockabilly revelry as the sensational WILD, Carmen Ghia and the Hot Rods and many more treated jive and skiffle fans to an al fresco show to remember.

Well, this year this intimate outdoor arena will once again be swinging to the sound of some of the best rockabilly music around, as some of the best musicians lay down the tunes that rocked a generation, and still influence music today.

So polish up those dancing shoes, coif that quiff and get ready for a swinging afternoon and evening to remember.

John LeightonThe past couple of years have been good for John Leighton. The local musician and song writer has found favour with the critics following the release of his debut album Dramatic Life, and he hasnt looked back. This is Leightons fourth appearance at the jazz festival, and the pianist continues to develop his own distinct musical style.

Always determined to bring something new Leighton still points to the influence of the jazz icons of the past, whose fingerprints remain on the music being produced today. But he brings so much more to the stage, with musical collaborations with artists from around the world and his own unique personal approach to song writing.

Neil Cowley TrioThe Neil Cowley Trio is not your typical jazz trio. A dazzling composer, pianist Cowley creates deeply engaging, and dynamic music that journeys between poetic and poignant, pomp and splendor, to powerful rip-roaring riffs.

Grand Vintage Ball featuring the Puppini SistersSupport from Rumble Club DJs and the Eternally Honourable Councillor

Its time to don your best vintage threads, put your dancing shoes on and throw some impressive shapes at the Grand Vintage Ball.

The Venue in Ebrington gets a lavish makeover in homage to the citys cultural and social past, revisiting the music, styles, trends and fashions of the 1920s-1960s. Glamour, great music, dancing and fun are guaranteed as you jive, waltz and quickstep the night away.

Headline act at the Ball is the globally renowned swing-pop trio, the Puppini Sisters, who celebrate the sounds and fashions of the 1930s-40s in true vintage style with their close vocal harmonies and synchronised moves.

Pink MartiniPink Martini describe their diverse musical style as an urban musical travelogue, a rollicking around-the-world musical adventure if the United Nations had a house band in 1962, hopefully wed be that band, they maintain. Certainly the energy they put into their shows is impressive. One minute you feel like youre in the middle of a samba parade in Rio de Janeiro, and in the next moment, youre in a French music hall of the 1930s, or a palazzo in Napoli.

Join them at the Millennium Forum for what is the latest stop on a global adventure thats seen them perform on some of the best stages in the world.

The Stars from the Commitments supported by the Jive AcesIrish soul sensations, The Stars from the Commitments, are making their return to the festival this year after a belting festival finale in 2012. Its hard to believe that its over twenty years since Roddy Doyles band of North Dublin wannabes, The Commitments, brought their unique brand of Irish soul to the big screen.

Featuring members from the original line-up, the band recapture all the magic, and Derry music fans will have the opportunity to relive all the soul classics from The Commitments movie live, from Mustang Sally to Try A Little Tenderness. One not to be missed!

Foyle Showband supported by Brass Impact Big BandThis nine piece all action band, boasting a great brass section, has reformed for one night only for the City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival. The Foyle Show Band spread its wings around the country and further afield drawing in huge crowds where ever they performed.

Without a doubt they are one of the liveliest bands in this years Jazz Festival and for one night only at Derrys City Hotel, the pulse of the Jazz festival 2013. They will be joined on the night by the inimitable Brass Impact Big Band, whose high octane show will leave you begging for more.

Darryl Hendrix and The Love Hearts Big Band Experience.After a successful stint as guest artist on the Celebrating the Music of the Drifters Tour, Darryl Hendrix now brings his own show to town. Featuring the many classic Motown hits that have brought him so much acclaim Darryl Hendrix & The Love Hearts will be taking on the best of the Drifters, Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Four Tops, and Lionel Richie with the backing of a fantastic nine piece big band.

Sharing the bill on the night will be Kim Dickinson, who has brought her Karen Carpenter tribute show to packed houses across the UK & Ireland including the National Concert Hall, Dublin and Belfasts Waterfront Hall.

Celtronic presents Ame (Innervisions Berlin - Live) + support from Deep Fried Funk DJs

DJ/Production duo Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann, aka Ame, have been penning songs boldly combining their floor filling elements with conceptual conceits which have won them widespread acclaim since 2003. As part of Innervisions, the collective/label they run with Dixon, offers glimpses of the future of electronic music through their live compilations. Not given to following trends they draw on the whole of dance musics history in their work.

Jerry Fish and Band There is probably no better way to round off the Jazz Festival on Sunday than an evening of fun, great music and all round entertainment courtesy of Jerry Fish and his band.

This constantly mutating band of misfit musicians aim to transport you with a sound that has been described as a mix of lounge lizard schmooze and mariachi passion. The result is certainly never boring!

James Huish & Michael Buble Tribute

James Huish was born to sing. BBC Radio 3s Jazz Line-Up at the Tower HotelThe City of Derry Jazz Festival will be taking to the airwaves this year, courtesy of BBC Radio 3s Jazz Line-Up show presented by Julian Joseph which will be recorded at the Tower Hotel.

Hailed as one of the finest pianists to emerge this side of the Atlantic, for over two decades Julian has been a seminal figure in contemporary jazz, both as a composer and arranger as well as a respected bandleader and broadcaster.



The show will feature Trish Clowes (saxophone), current BBC Radio 3s New Jazz Generation Artist, with musicians Chris Montague (guitar), Calum Gourlay (double bass), James Maddren (drums) and Gwilym Simcock (piano) in an exclusive performance for the festival. Plus Linley Hamilton Saxtet featuring Dana Masters.

Now in its 13th year Jazz Line-Up has broadcast the best of British and International jazz since the year 2000 and the shows team are delighted to be included in the Jazz festival, and make their contribution to the City of Culture Celebrations.

Shake it upThe Pink Ladies join the festival once again with another major event, this time in partnership with the Gaelscoil Eadain Mhoir.

Shake It Up will see ten couples perform a range of dancing styles which include Irish Dancing, Salsa Dancing and Ballroom Dancing. A must see highlight will be the dance-off between the Pink Ladies and teachers from Gaelscoil Eadain Mhoir which is sure to add some spice to the event.

Doors will open from 7pm, with the event starting at 7:30pm sharp. Followed by music.

DLD Second Line Jazz Parade

Its time to step up and step out on Shipquay Street for the DLD Second Line Jazz parade!

Second Line NI has been working closely with the JayDee Brass Band, local musicians of all ages, schools and community groups to form the citys first Jazz Parade. Second Line street performances have always been connected to New Orleans, traditionally heralded as the birthplace of Jazz.

So bring your umbrellas and dancing shoes and come and strut your stuff for this vibrant and colourful event.



Events kick off early in preparation for the vintage extravaganza, with a series of special sewing workshops. Just select your favourite era and create your own bespoke vintage ensemble, whether its a flamboyant frock from the 50s or a micro mini from the swinging 60s.

Get some inspiration for your costume at the Vintage Fashion Show in Foyleside on Saturday 20th April, between 11am 4pm. The show will feature original vintage, and vintage inspired, day and evening wear from eras spanning the 1920s-1980s.

Brush up on the dance moves of your era ahead of the Vintage Ball with special dance classes, teaching everything from the foxtrot to the charleston.

The vintage theme continues throughout the weekend of the Jazz Festival with a Vintage Car Rally taking place on Saturday May 4 at Ebrington Square.

Retro revelry as Derry goes vintage

This year the City of Derry Jazz Festival is

going vintage with a whole line-up of unique events bringing fashion

and music together for a celebration to remember, culminating in a fabulous

Vintage Ball.



Then on Saturday night the musical past will be brought to life at the fabulous Vintage Ball - celebrating swing, jazz, rockabilly and northern soul. Join the Puppini Sisters, the Rumble Club DJs and the Eternally Honourable Councillor for a serious night of fun - just slip on your gladrags and take in the vintage spectacle at The Venue in Ebrington Square.

Finally, after all the revelry, enjoy some retro retail therapy at the Vintage Antiques Fair, taking place on Sunday from 11am-6pm in London Street and Pump Street.

If classic motors are your thing then come along and enjoy the splendour of the North Coast Vintage Car Club and Coleraine & District Historical Vehicle Club from 12pm 1:30pm. Old style entertainment and refreshments will be available throughout the day with Vintage Tea Rooms open between 10am 4pm and some old school kiddie rides.
