1:1 The word of God which came to Jeremiasthe [son] of Chelcias, of the priests, whodwelt in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin:

1:2 [accordingly] as the word of God came tohim in the days of Josias son of Amos king ofJuda, in the thirteenth year of his reign.

1:3 And it was in the days of Joakim, son ofJosias king of Juda, until the eleventh yearof Sedekias king of Juda, [even] until thecaptivity of Jerusalem in the fifth month.

1:4 And the word of the Lord came to him,[saying],

1:5 Before I formed thee in the belly, I knewthee; and before thou camest forth from the womb, I sanctified thee; I appointed thee aprophet to the nations.

1:6 And I said, O Lord, thou that art supremeLord, behold, I know not [how] to speak, forI am a child.

1:7 And the Lord said to me, Say not, I am achild: for thou shalt go to all to whomsoeverI shall send thee, and according to all [the words] that I shall command thee, thou shalt

speak.

1:8 Be not afraid before them: for I am withthee to deliver thee, saith the Lord.

1:9 And the Lord stretched forth his hand tome, and touched my mouth: and the Lordsaid to me, Behold, I have put my words intothy mouth.

1:10 Behold, I have appointed thee this dayover nations and over kingdoms, to root out,

and to pull down, and to destroy, and torebuild, and to plant.

1:1 The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah,of the priests that were in Anathoth in theland of Benjamin:

1:2 To whom the word of the LORD came inthe days of Josiah the son of Amon king ofJudah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.

1:3 It came also in the days of Jehoiakim theson of Josiah king of Judah, unto the end ofthe eleventh year of Zedekiah the son ofJosiah king of Judah, unto the carrying awayof Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.

1:4 Then the word of the LORD came unto me,saying,

1:6 Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, Icannot speak: for I am a child.

1:8 Be not afraid of their faces: for I am withthee to deliver thee, saith the LORD.

1:9 Then the LORD put forth his hand, andtouched my mouth. And the LORD said untome, Behold, I have put my words in thymouth.

1:10 See, I have this day set thee over thenations and over the kingdoms, to root out,and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw

down, to build, and to plant.

1:11 And the word of the Lord came to me,saying, What seest thou? And I said, A rod ofan almond tree.

1:12 And the Lord said to me, Thou hast wellseen: for I have watched over my words toperform them.

1:13 And the word of the Lord came to me asecond time, saying, What seest thou? And Isaid, A caldron on the fire; and the face of itis toward the north.

1:14 And the Lord said to me, From thenorth shall flame forth evils upon all theinhabitants of the land.

1:15 For, behold, I call together all thekingdoms of the earth from the north, saiththe Lord; and they shall come, and shall seteach one his throne at the entrance of thegates of Jerusalem, and against all the wallsround about her, and against all the cities ofJuda.

1:16 And I will speak to them in judgment,concerning all their iniquity, [forasmuch] asthey have forsaken me, and sacrificed to

strange gods, and worshipped the works oftheir own hands.

1:17 And do thou gird up thy loins, and standup, and speak all [the words] that I shallcommand thee: be not afraid of their face,neither be thou alarmed before them; for Iam with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord.

1:18 Behold, I have made thee this day as astrong city, and as a brazen wall, strong[against] all the kings of Juda, and the

princes thereof, and the people of the land.

1:19 And they shall fight against thee; butthey shall by no means prevail against thee; because I am with thee, to deliver thee, saiththe Lord.

1:11 Moreover the word of the LORD cameunto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree.

1:12 Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast

well seen: for I will hasten my word toperform it.

1:13 And the word of the LORD came unto methe second time, saying, What seest thou? AndI said, I see a seething pot; and the facethereof is toward the north.

1:14 Then the LORD said unto me, Out of thenorth an evil shall break forth upon all theinhabitants of the land.

1:15 For, lo, I will call all the families of thekingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; andthey shall come, and they shall set every onehis throne at the entering of the gates ofJerusalem, and against all the walls thereofround about, and against all the cities ofJudah.

1:16 And I will utter my judgments againstthem touching all their wickedness, who haveforsaken me, and have burned incense untoother gods, and worshipped the works of their

own hands.

1:17 Thou therefore gird up thy loins, andarise, and speak unto them all that I commandthee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest Iconfound thee before them.

1:18 For, behold, I have made thee this day adefenced city, and an iron pillar, and brasen walls against the whole land, against the kingsof Judah, against the princes thereof, againstthe priests thereof, and against the people of

the land.

1:19 And they shall fight against thee; but theyshall not prevail against thee; for I am withthee, saith the LORD, to deliver thee.

2:1 And he said, Thus saith the Lord,

2:2 I remember the kindness of thy youth,and the love of thine espousals,

2:3 in following the Holy One of Israel, saiththe Lord, Israel was the holy [people] to the

Lord, [and] the first-fruits of his increase: althat devoured him shall offend; evils shallcome upon them, saith the Lord.

2:4 Hear the word of the Lord, O house of

Jacob, and every family of the house ofIsrael.

2:5 Thus saith the Lord, What trespass have your fathers found in me, that they haverevolted far from me, and gone after vanities, and become vain?

2:6 And they said not, Where is the Lord, who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, who guided us in the wilderness, in anuntried and trackless land, in a land which

no man at all went through, and no mandwelt there?

2:7 And I brought you to Carmel, that yeshould eat the fruits thereof, and the goodthereof; and ye went in, and defiled my land,and made mine heritage an abomination.

2:8 The priest said not, Where is the Lord?and they that held by the law knew me not:the shepherds also sinned against me, andthe prophets prophesied by Baal, and went

after that which profited not.

2:9 Therefore I will yet plead with you, and will plead with your children's children.

2:10 For go to the isles of the Chettians, andse; and send to Kedar, and observeaccurately, and see if such things have beendone;

2:11 if the nations will change their gods,though they are not gods: but my people

have changed their glory, [for that] from which they shall not be profited.

2:12 The heaven is amazed at this, and is very exceedingly horror-struck, saith theLord.

2:13 For my people has committed two[faults], and evil ones: they have forsakenme, the fountain of water of life, and hewnout for themselves broken cisterns, which will not be able to hold water.

2:14 Is Israel a servant, or a home-born

in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.

2:3 Israel was holiness unto the LORD, andthe firstfruits of his increase: all that devourhim shall offend; evil shall come upon them,

saith the LORD.

2:4 Hear ye the word of the LORD, O house ofJacob, and all the families of the house ofIsrael:

2:5 Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gonefar from me, and have walked after vanity, andare become vain?

2:6 Neither said they, Where is the LORD that

brought us up out of the land of Egypt, thatled us through the wilderness, through a landof deserts and of pits, through a land ofdrought, and of the shadow of death, througha land that no man passed through, and whereno man dwelt?

2:7 And I brought you into a plentiful country,to eat the fruit thereof and the goodnessthereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled myland, and made mine heritage anabomination.

2:8 The priests said not, Where is the LORD?and they that handle the law knew me not: thepastors also transgressed against me, and theprophets prophesied by Baal, and walked afterthings that do not profit.

2:9 Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saiththe LORD, and with your children's children will I plead.

2:10 For pass over the isles of Chittim, and

see; and send unto Kedar, and considerdiligently, and see if there be such a thing.

2:11 Hath a nation changed their gods, whichare yet no gods? but my people have changedtheir glory for that which doth not profit.

2:12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saiththe LORD.

2:13 For my people have committed two evils;

they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken

slave? why has he become a spoil?

2:15 The lions roared upon him, and utteredtheir voice, which have made his land a wilderness: and his cities are broken down,

that they should not be inhabited.

2:16 Also the children of Memphis andTaphnas have known thee, and mocked thee.

2:17 Has not thy forsaking me brought thesethings upon thee? saith the Lord thy God.

2:18 And now what hast thou to do with the way of Egypt, to drink the water of Geon?and what hast thou to do with the way of the Assyrians, to drink the water of rivers?

2:19 Thine apostasy shall correct thee, andthy wickedness shall reprove thee: knowthen, and see, that thy forsaking me [has been] bitter to thee, saith the Lord thy God;and I have taken no pleasure in thee, saiththe Lord thy God.

2:20 For of old thou hast broken thy yoke,and plucked asunder thy bands; and thouhas said, I will not serve thee, but will goupon every high hill, and under every shady

tree, there will I indulge in my fornication.

2:21 Yet I planted thee a fruitful vine,entirely of the right sort: how art thou astrange vine turned to bitterness!

2:22 Though thou shouldest wash thyself with nitre, and multiply to thyself soap,[still] thou art stained by thine iniquities before me, saith the Lord.

2:23 How wilt thou say, I am not polluted,

and have not gone after Baal? behold thy ways in the burial-ground, and know whatthou hast done: her voice has howled in theevening:

2:24 she has extended her ways over the waters of the desert; she was hurried along by the lusts of her soul; she is given up [tothem], who will turn her back? none thatseek her shall be weary; at [the time of] herhumiliation they shall find her.

2:25 Withdraw thy foot from a rough way,and they throat from thirst: but she said I

cisterns, that can hold no water.

2:14 Is Israel a servant? is he a homebornslave? why is he spoiled?

2:15 The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his citiesare burned without inhabitant.

2:16 Also the children of Noph and Tahapaneshave broken the crown of thy head.

2:17 Hast thou not procured this unto thyself,in that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way?

2:18 And now what hast thou to do in the way

of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or whathast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drinkthe waters of the river?

2:19 Thine own wickedness shall correct thee,and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: knowtherefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thyGod, and that my fear is not in thee, saith theLord GOD of hosts.

2:20 For of old time I have broken thy yoke,

and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I willnot transgress; when upon every high hill andunder every green tree thou wanderest,playing the harlot.

2:21 Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turnedinto the degenerate plant of a strange vineunto me?

2:22 For though thou wash thee with nitre,and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is

marked before me, saith the Lord GOD.

2:23 How canst thou say, I am not polluted, Ihave not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art aswift dromedary traversing her ways;

2:24 A wild ass used to the wilderness, thatsnuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in heroccasion who can turn her away? all they thatseek her will not weary themselves; in hermonth they shall find her.

will strengthen myself: for she lovedstrangers, and went after them.

2:26 As is the shame of a thief when he iscaught, so shall the children of Israel be

ashamed; they, and their kings, and theirprinces, and their priests, and theirprophets.

2:27 They said to a stock, Thou art myfather; and to a stone, Thou has begottenme: and they have turned [their] backs tome, and not their faces: yet in the time oftheir afflictions they will say, Arise, and saveus.

2:28 And where are thy gods, which thou

madest for thyself? will they arise and savein the time of thine affliction? for accordingto the number of thy cities were thy gods, OJuda; and according to the number of thestreets of Jerusalem they sacrificed to Baal.

2:29 Wherefore do ye speak unto me? ye allhave been ungodly, and ye all havetransgressed against me, saith the Lord.

2:30 In vain have I smitten your children; yehave not received correction: a sword has

devoured your prophets as a destroying lion; yet ye feared not.

2:31 Hear ye the word of the Lord: thus saiththe Lord, Have I been a wilderness or a dryland to Israel? wherefore has my people said, We will not be ruled over, and will not cometo thee any more?

2:32 Will a bride forget her ornaments, or a virgin her girdle? but my people hasforgotten me days without number.

2:33 What fair device wilt thou yet employ inthy ways, so as to seek love? [it shall] not[be] so; moreover thou has done wickedly incorrupting thy ways;

2:34 and in thine hands has been found the blood of innocent souls; I have not foundthem in holes, but on every oak.

2:35 Yet thou saidst, I am innocent: only lethis wrath be turned away from me. Behold, I

[will] plead with thee, whereas thou sayest, Ihave not sinned.

and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst,There is no hope: no; for I have lovedstrangers, and after them will I go.

2:26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found,

so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, theirkings, their princes, and their priests, andtheir prophets.

2:27 Saying to a stock, Thou art my father;and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth:for they have turned their back unto me, andnot their face: but in the time of their troublethey will say, Arise, and save us.

2:28 But where are thy gods that thou hastmade thee? let them arise, if they can save

thee in the time of thy trouble: for accordingto the number of thy cities are thy gods, OJudah.

2:29 Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye allhave transgressed against me, saith theLORD.

2:30 In vain have I smitten your children;they received no correction: your own swordhath devoured your prophets, like adestroying lion.

2:31 O generation, see ye the word of theLORD. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel?a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more untothee?

2:32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgottenme days without number.

2:33 Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love?

therefore hast thou also taught the wickedones thy ways.

2:34 Also in thy skirts is found the blood ofthe souls of the poor innocents: I have notfound it by secret search, but upon all these.

2:35 Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent,surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, Ihave not sinned.

2:36 Why gaddest thou about so much tochange thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of

2:36 For thou has been so exceedinglycontemptuous as to repeat thy ways; butthou shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wastashamed of Assur.

2:37 For thou shalt go forth thence also withthine hands upon thine head; for the Lordhas rejected thine hope, and thou shalt notprosper in it.

Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.

2:37 Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, andthine hands upon thine head: for the LORDhath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt

not prosper in them.

3:1 If a man put away his wife, and shedepart from him, and become anotherman's, shall she return to him any more atall? shall not that woman be utterly defiled? ye thou hast gone a-whoring with manyshepherds, and hast returned to me, saiththe Lord.

3:2 Lift up thine eyes [to look] straightforward, and see where thou hast not beenutterly defiled. Thou hast sat for them by the wayside as a deserted crow, and hast defiledthe land with thy fornications and thy wickedness.

3:3 And thou didst retain many shepherdsfor a stumbling-block to thyself: thou hadst a whore's face, thou didst become shameless

toward all.

3:4 Hast thou not called me as it were ahome, and the father and guide of thy virgin-time?

3:5 Will [God's anger] continue for ever, or be preserved to the end? Behold, thou hastspoken and done these bad things, and hadstpower [to do them].

3:6 And the Lord said to me in the days of

Josias the king, Hast thou seen what thingsthe house of Israel has done to me? theyhave gone on every high mountain, andunder every shady tree, and have committedfornication there.

3:7 And I said after she had committed allthese acts of fornication, Turn again to me. Yet she returned not. And faithless Juda sawher faithlessness.

3:8 And I saw that (for all the sins of which

she was convicted, wherein the house ofIsrael committed adultery, and I put her

3:1 They say, If a man put away his wife, andshe go from him, and become another man's,shall he return unto her again? shall not thatland be greatly polluted? but thou hast playedthe harlot with many lovers; yet return againto me, saith the LORD.

3:2 Lift up thine eyes unto the high places,and see where thou hast not been lien with. Inthe ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hastpolluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness.

3:3 Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latterrain; and thou hadst a whore's forehead, thourefusedst to be ashamed.

3:4 Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me,My father, thou art the guide of my youth?

3:5 Will he reserve his anger for ever? will hekeep it to the end? Behold, thou hast spokenand done evil things as thou couldest.

3:6 The LORD said also unto me in the days ofJosiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone upupon every high mountain and under every

green tree, and there hath played the harlot.

3:7 And I said after she had done all thesethings, Turn thou unto me. But she returnednot. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it.

3:8 And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committedadultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sisterJudah feared not, but went and played theharlot also.

3:9 And it came to pass through the lightness

away, and gave into her hands a bill ofdivorcement,) yet faithless Juda feared not, but went and herself also committedfornication.

3:9 And her fornication was nothingaccounted of; and she committed adultery with wood and stone.

3:10 And for all these things faithless Judaturned not to me with all her heart, butfalsely.

3:11 And the Lord said to me, Israel has justified himself more than faithless Juda.

3:12 Go and read these words toward the

north, and thou shalt say, Return to me, Ohouse of Israel, saith the Lord; and I will notset my face against you: for I am merciful,saith the Lord, and I will not be angry with you for ever.

3:13 Nevertheless, know thine iniquity, thatthou hast sinned against the Lord thy God,and hast scattered thy ways to strangersunder every shady tree, but thou didst nothearken to my voice, saith the Lord.

3:14 Turn, ye children that have revolted,saith the Lord; for I will rule over you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of afamily, and I will bring you in to Sion:

3:15 and I will give you shepherds after myheart, and they shall certainly tend you withknowledge.

3:16 And it shall come to pass that when yeare multiplied and increased upon the land,saith the Lord, in those days they shall say

no more, The ark of the covenant of the HolyOne of Israel: it shall not come to mind; itshall not be named; neither shall it be visited; nor shall [this] be done any more.

3:17 In those days and at that time they shallcall Jerusalem the throne of the Lord; and allthe nations shall be gathered to it: and theyshall not walk any more after theimaginations of their evil heart.

3:18 In those days the house of Juda, shall

come together to the house of Israel, andthey shall come, together, from the land of

of her whoredom, that she defiled the land,and committed adultery with stones and withstocks.

3:10 And yet for all this her treacherous sister

Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the LORD.

3:11 And the LORD said unto me, The backsliding Israel hath justified herself morethan treacherous Judah.

3:12 Go and proclaim these words toward thenorth, and say, Return, thou backslidingIsrael, saith the LORD; and I will not causemine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful,saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for

ever.

3:13 Only acknowledge thine iniquity, thatthou hast transgressed against the LORD thyGod, and hast scattered thy ways to thestrangers under every green tree, and ye havenot obeyed my voice, saith the LORD.

3:14 Turn, O backsliding children, saith theLORD; for I am married unto you: and I willtake you one of a city, and two of a family, andI will bring you to Zion:

3:15 And I will give you pastors according tomine heart, which shall feed you withknowledge and understanding.

3:16 And it shall come to pass, when ye bemultiplied and increased in the land, in thosedays, saith the LORD, they shall say no more,The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neithershall it come to mind: neither shall theyremember it; neither shall they visit it; neithershall that be done any more.

3:17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem thethrone of the LORD; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD,to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk anymore after the imagination of their evil heart.

3:18 In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shallcome together out of the land of the north tothe land that I have given for an inheritanceunto your fathers.

3:19 But I said, How shall I put thee among

the north, and from all the countries, to theland, which I caused their fathers to inherit.

3:19 And I said, So be it, Lord, for [thousaidst] I will set thee among children, and

will give thee a choice land, the inheritanceof the Almighty God of the Gentiles: and Isaid, Ye shall call me Father; and ye shall notturn away rom me.

3:20 But as a wife acts treacherously againsther husband, so has the house of Israel dealttreacherously against me, saith the Lord.

3:21 A voice from the lips was heard, [even]of weeping and supplication of the childrenof Israel: for they have dealt unrighteously in

their ways, they have forgotten God theirHoly One.

3:22 Turn, ye children that are given toturning, and I will heal your bruises. Behold, we will be thy servants; for thou art the Lordour God.

3:23 Truly the hills and the strength of themountains were a lying refuge: but by theLord our God is the salvation of Israel.

3:24 But shame has consumed the labours ofour fathers from our youth; their sheep andtheir calves, and their sons and theirdaughters.

3:25 We have lain down in our shame, andour disgrace has covered us: because we andour fathers have sinned before our God,from our youth until this day; and we havenot hearkened to the voice of the Lord ourGod.

3:20 Surely as a wife treacherously departethfrom her husband, so have ye dealttreacherously with me, O house of Israel, saiththe LORD.

3:21 A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children ofIsrael: for they have perverted their way, andthey have forgotten the LORD their God.

3:22 Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come

unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God.

3:23 Truly in vain is salvation hoped for fromthe hills, and from the multitude ofmountains: truly in the LORD our God is thesalvation of Israel.

3:24 For shame hath devoured the labour ofour fathers from our youth; their flocks andtheir herds, their sons and their daughters.

3:25 We lie down in our shame, and our

confusion covereth us: for we have sinnedagainst the LORD our God, we and ourfathers, from our youth even unto this day,and have not obeyed the voice of the LORDour God.

4:1 If Israel will return to me, saith the Lord,he shall return: and if he will remove hisabominations out of his mouth, and fear before me, and swear,

4:2 The Lord lives, with truth, in judgmentand righteousness, then shall nations bless by him, and by him they shall praise God inJerusalem.

4:3 For thus saith the Lord to the men ofJuda, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

Break up fresh ground for yourselves, andsow not among thorns.

4:1 If thou wilt return, O Israel, saith theLORD, return unto me: and if thou wilt putaway thine abominations out of my sight, thenshalt thou not remove.

4:2 And thou shalt swear, The LORD liveth, intruth, in judgment, and in righteousness; andthe nations shall bless themselves in him, andin him shall they glory.

4:3 For thus saith the LORD to the men ofJudah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow

ground, and sow not among thorns.

4:4 Circumcise yourselves to your God, andcircumcise your hardness of heart, ye men ofJuda, and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my wrath go forth as fire, and burn, and there be

none to quench it, because of the evil of yourdevices.

4:5 Declare ye in Juda, and let it be heard inJerusalem: say ye, Sound the trumpet in theland; cry ye aloud: say ye, Gather yourselvestogether, and let us enter into the fortifiedcities.

4:6 Gather up [your wares] and flee to Sion:hasten, stay not: for I will bring evils fromthe north, an great destruction.

4:7 The lion is gone up from his lair, he hasroused [himself] to the destruction of thenations, and has gone forth out of his place,to make the land desolate; and the citiesshall be destroyed, so as to be withoutinhabitant.

4:8 For these things gird yourselves withsackcloths, and lament, and howl: for theanger of the Lord is not turned away from you.

4:9 And it shall come to pass in that day,saith the Lord, that the heart of the kingshall perish, and the heart of the princes;and the priests shall be amazed, and theprophets shall wonder.

4:10 And I said, O sovereign Lord, verilythou hast deceived this people andJerusalem, saying, There shall be peace; whereas behold, the sword has reached evento their soul.

4:11 At that time they shall say to this peopleand to Jerusalem, [There is] a spirit of errorin the wilderness: the way of the daughter ofmy people is not to purity, nor to holiness.

4:12 [But] a spirit of full vengeance shallcome upon me; and now I declare my judgments against them.

4:13 Behold, he shall come up as a cloud,and his chariots as a tempest: his horses are

swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we arein misery.

4:4 Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, andtake away the foreskins of your heart, ye menof Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lestmy fury come forth like fire, and burn thatnone can quench it, because of the evil of your

doings.

4:5 Declare ye in Judah, and publish inJerusalem; and say, Blow ye the trumpet inthe land: cry, gather together, and say, Assemble yourselves, and let us go into thedefenced cities.

4:6 Set up the standard toward Zion: retire,stay not: for I will bring evil from the north,and a great destruction.

4:7 The lion is come up from his thicket, andthe destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way; heis gone forth from his place to make thy landdesolate; and thy cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant.

4:8 For this gird you with sackcloth, lamentand howl: for the fierce anger of the LORD isnot turned back from us.

4:9 And it shall come to pass at that day, saiththe LORD, that the heart of the king shall

perish, and the heart of the princes; and thepriests shall be astonished, and the prophetsshall wonder.

4:10 Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! surely thouhast greatly deceived this people andJerusalem, saying, Ye shall have peace; whereas the sword reacheth unto the soul.

4:11 At that time shall it be said to this peopleand to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the highplaces in the wilderness toward the daughter

of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse,

4:12 Even a full wind from those places shallcome unto me: now also will I give sentenceagainst them.

4:13 Behold, he shall come up as clouds, andhis chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horsesare swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for weare spoiled.

4:14 O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from

wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. Howlong shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee?

4:14 Cleanse thine heart from wickedness, OJerusalem, that thou mayest be saved: howlong will thy grievous thoughts be withinthee?

4:15 For a voice of one publishing from Danshall come, and trouble out of mountEphraim shall be heard of.

4:16 Remind ye the nations; behold, they arecome: proclaim [it] in Jerusalem, that bandsare approaching from a land afar off, andhave uttered their voice against the cities ofJuda.

4:17 As keepers of a field, they have

surrounded her; because thou, saith theLord, has neglected me.

4:18 Thy ways and thy devices have broughtthese things upon thee; this is thy wickedness, for [it is] bitter, for it hasreached to thy heart.

4:19 I am pained in my bowels, my bowels,and the sensitive powers of my heart; mysoul is in great commotion, my heart is torn:I will not be silent, for my soul has heard the

sound of a trumpet, the cry of war, and ofdistress: it calls on destruction;

4:20 for all the land is distressed: suddenly[my tabernacle is distressed, my curtainshave been rent asunder.

4:21 How long shall I see fugitives, and hearthe sound of the trumpet?

4:22 For the princes of my people have notknown me, they are foolish and unwise

children: they are wise to do evil, but [how]to do good they have not known.

4:23 I looked upon the earth, and, behold, [it was] not; and to the sky, an there was nolight in it.

4:24 I beheld the mountains, and theytrembled, and [I saw] all the hills incommotion.

4:25 I looked, and behold, there was no man,

and all the birds of the sky were scared.

4:15 For a voice declareth from Dan, andpublisheth affliction from mount Ephraim.

4:16 Make ye mention to the nations; behold,

publish against Jerusalem, that watcherscome from a far country, and give out their voice against the cities of Judah.

4:17 As keepers of a field, are they against herround about; because she hath been rebelliousagainst me, saith the LORD.

4:18 Thy way and thy doings have procuredthese things unto thee; this is thy wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reacheth untothine heart.

4:19 My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; Icannot hold my peace, because thou hastheard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet,the alarm of war.

4:20 Destruction upon destruction is cried;for the whole land is spoiled: suddenly are mytents spoiled, and my curtains in a moment.

4:21 How long shall I see the standard, and

hear the sound of the trumpet?

4:22 For my people is foolish, they have notknown me; they are sottish children, and theyhave none understanding: they are wise to doevil, but to do good they have no knowledge.

4:23 I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was withoutform, and void; and the heavens, and they hadno light.

4:24 I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they

trembled, and all the hills moved lightly.

4:25 I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, andall the birds of the heavens were fled.

4:26 I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD,and by his fierce anger.

4:27 For thus hath the LORD said, The wholeland shall be desolate; yet will I not make a

full end.

4:26 I saw, and, behold, Carmel was desert,and all the cities were burnt with fire at thepresence of the Lord, and at the presence ofhis fierce anger they were utterly destroyed.

4:27 Thus saith the Lord, The whole landshall be desolate; but I will not make a fullend.

4:28 For these things let the earth mourn,and let the sky be dark above: for I havespoken, and I will not repent; I havepurposed, and I will not turn back from it.

4:29 The whole land has recoiled from thenoise of the horseman and the bent bow;they have gone into the caves, and have

hidden themselves in the groves, and havegone up upon the rocks: every city wasabandoned, no man dwelt in them.

4:30 And what wilt thou do? Though thouclothe thyself with scarlet, and adorn thyself with golden ornaments; though thou adornthine eyes with stibium, thy beauty [will be]in vain: thy lovers have rejected thee, theyseek thy life.

4:31 For I have heard thy groaning as the

voice of a woman in travail, as of her that brings forth her first child; the voice of thedaughter of Zion shall fail through weakness,and she shall lose the strength of her hands,[saying], Woe is me! for my soul faints because of the slain.

4:28 For this shall the earth mourn, and theheavens above be black; because I havespoken it, I have purposed it, and will notrepent, neither will I turn back from it.

4:29 The whole city shall flee for the noise ofthe horsemen and bowmen; they shall go intothickets, and climb up upon the rocks: everycity shall be forsaken, and not a man dwelltherein.

4:30 And when thou art spoiled, what wiltthou do? Though thou clothest thyself withcrimson, though thou deckest thee withornaments of gold, though thou rentest thyface with painting, in vain shalt thou makethyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they

will seek thy life.

4:31 For I have heard a voice as of a woman intravail, and the anguish as of her that bringethforth her first child, the voice of the daughterof Zion, that bewaileth herself, that spreadethher hands, saying, Woe is me now! for my soulis wearied because of murderers.

5:1 Run ye about in the streets of Jerusalem,and see, and know, and seek in her broadplaces, if ye can find [one], if there is any onethat does judgment, and seeks faithfulness;and I will pardon them, saith the Lord.

5:2 The Lord lives, they say; do they nottherefore swear falsely?

5:3 O Lord, thine eyes are upon faithfulness:thou hast scourged them, but they have notgrieved; thou hast consumed them; but they would not receive correction: they havemade their faces harder than a rock; andthey would not return.

5:4 Then I said, It may be they are poor; for

they are weak, for they know not the way ofthe Lord, or the judgment of God.

5:1 Run ye to and fro through the streets ofJerusalem, and see now, and know, and seekin the broad places thereof, if ye can find aman, if there be any that executeth judgment,that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it.

5:2 And though they say, The LORD liveth;surely they swear falsely.

5:3 O LORD, are not thine eyes upon thetruth? thou hast stricken them, but they havenot grieved; thou hast consumed them, butthey have refused to receive correction: theyhave made their faces harder than a rock; theyhave refused to return.

5:4 Therefore I said, Surely these are poor;

they are foolish: for they know not the way ofthe LORD, nor the judgment of their God.

5:5 I will go to the rich men, and will speakto them; for they have known the way of theLord, and the judgment of God: but, behold, with one consent they have broken the yoke,

they have burst the bonds.

5:6 Therefore has a lion out of the forestsmitten them, and a wolf has destroyed themeven to [their] houses, and a leopard has watched against their cities: all that go forthfrom them shall be hunted: for they havemultiplied their ungodliness, they havestrengthened themselves in their revoltings.

5:7 In what [way] shall I forgive thee forthese things? Thy sons have forsaken me,

and sworn by them that are no gods: and Ifed them to the full, and they committedadultery, and lodged in harlots' houses.

5:8 They became as wanton horses: theyneighed each one after his neighbour's wife.

5:9 Shall I not visit for these things? saiththe Lord: and shall not my soul be avengedon such a nation as this.

5:10 Go up upon her battlements, and break

[them] down; but make not a full end: leaveher buttresses: for they are the Lord's.

5:11 For the house of Israel have indeed dealttreacherously against me, saith the Lord: thehouse of Juda also

5:12 have lied to their Lord, and they havesaid, These things are not so; no evils shallcome upon us; and we shall not see sword orfamine.

5:13 Our prophets became wind, and the word of the Lord was not in them.

5:14 Therefore thus saith the Lord Almighty,Because ye have spoken this word, behold, Ihave made my words in thy mouth fire, andthis people wood, and it shall devour them.

5:15 Behold, I [will] bring upon you a nationfrom far, O house of Israel, saith the Lord; anation the sound of whose language on shallnot understand.

5:16 [They are] all mighty men:

5:5 I will get me unto the great men, and willspeak unto them; for they have known the wayof the LORD, and the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke,

and burst the bonds.

5:6 Wherefore a lion out of the forest shallslay them, and a wolf of the evenings shallspoil them, a leopard shall watch over theircities: every one that goeth out thence shall betorn in pieces: because their transgressionsare many, and their backslidings areincreased.

5:8 They were as fed horses in the morning:every one neighed after his neighbour's wife.

5:9 Shall I not visit for these things? saith theLORD: and shall not my soul be avenged onsuch a nation as this?

5:10 Go ye up upon her walls, and destroy; butmake not a full end: take away her battlements; for they are not the LORD's.

5:11 For the house of Israel and the house ofJudah have dealt very treacherously againstme, saith the LORD.

5:12 They have belied the LORD, and said, Itis not he; neither shall evil come upon us;neither shall we see sword nor famine:

5:13 And the prophets shall become wind, andthe word is not in them: thus shall it be doneunto them.

5:14 Wherefore thus saith the LORD God ofhosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, andthis people wood, and it shall devour them.

5:15 Lo, I will bring a nation upon you fromfar, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is amighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation

whose language thou knowest not, neitherunderstandest what they say.

5:17 and they shall devour you harvest, and your bread; and shall devour your sons, and your daughters; and they shall devour yoursheep, and your calves, and devour your

vineyards, and your fig-plantations, and your olive yards: and they shall utterlydestroy your strong cities, wherein yetrusted, with the sword.

5:18 And it shall come to pass in those days,saith the Lord thy God, that I will not utterlydestroy you.

5:19 And it shall come to pass, when ye shallsay, Wherefore has the Lord our God doneall these things to us? that thou shalt say to

them, Because ye served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in aland that is not yours.

5:20 Proclaim these things to the house ofJacob, and let them be heard in the house ofJuda.

5:21 Hear ye now these things, O foolish andsenseless people; who have eyes, and seenot; and have ears, and hear not:

5:22 will ye not be afraid of me? saith theLord; and will ye not fear before me, whohave set the sand for a bound to the sea, [as]a perpetual ordinance, and it shall not passit: yea, it shall rage, but not prevail; and its waves shall roar, but not pass over it.

5:23 But this people has a disobedient andrebellious heart; and they have turned asideand gone back:

5:24 and they have not said in their heart,

Let us fear now the Lord our God, who givesus the early and latter rain, according to theseason of the fulfillment of the ordinance ofharvest, and has preserved [it] for us.

5:25 Your transgressions have turned awaythese things, and your sins have removedgood things from you.

5:26 For among my people were foundungodly men; and they have set snares todestroy men, and have caught [them].

5:27 As a snare which has been set is full of

5:16 Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, theyare all mighty men.

5:17 And they shall eat up thine harvest, and

thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughtersshould eat: they shall eat up thy flocks andthine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thyfig trees: they shall impoverish thy fencedcities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.

5:18 Nevertheless in those days, saith theLORD, I will not make a full end with you.

5:19 And it shall come to pass, when ye shallsay, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God allthese things unto us? then shalt thou answer

them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and servedstrange gods in your land, so shall ye servestrangers in a land that is not your's.

5:20 Declare this in the house of Jacob, andpublish it in Judah, saying,

5:21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, andsee not; which have ears, and hear not:

5:22 Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye

not tremble at my presence, which haveplaced the sand for the bound of the sea by aperpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: andthough the waves thereof toss themselves, yetcan they not prevail; though they roar, yet canthey not pass over it?

5:23 But this people hath a revolting and arebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.

5:24 Neither say they in their heart, Let usnow fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain,

both the former and the latter, in his season:he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks ofthe harvest.

5:25 Your iniquities have turned away thesethings, and your sins have withholden goodthings from you.

5:26 For among my people are found wickedmen: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares;they set a trap, they catch men.

5:27 As a cage is full of birds, so are theirhouses full of deceit: therefore they are

birds, so are their houses full of deceit:therefore have they grown great, and becomerich:

5:28 and they have transgressed [the rule of]

judgment; they have not judged the cause ofthe orphan, nor have they judged the causeof the widow.

5:29 Shall I not visit for these things? saiththe Lord: and shall not my soul be avengedon such a nation as this?

5:30 Shocking and horrible deeds have beendone on the land;

5:31 the prophets utter unrighteous

prophecies, and the priests have clappedtheir hands: and my people has loved [tohave it] thus: and what will ye do for thefuture.

become great, and waxen rich.

5:28 They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, theyoverpass the deeds of the wicked: they judgenot the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet

they prosper; and the right of the needy dothey not judge.

5:29 Shall I not visit for these things? saith theLORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such anation as this?

5:30 A wonderful and horrible thing iscommitted in the land;

5:31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and thepriests bear rule by their means; and my

people love to have it so: and what will ye doin the end thereof?

6:1 Strengthen yourselves, ye children ofBenjamin, [to flee] out of the midst ofJerusalem, and sound an alarm with thetrumpet in Thecue, and set up a signal overBaethacharma: for evil threatens from thenorth, and a great destruction is coming.

6:2 And [thy] pride, O daughter of Sion,shall be taken away.

6:3 The shepherds and their flocks shallcome to her; and they shall pitch [their]tents against her round about, and shall feed[their flocks] each with his hand.

6:4 Prepare yourselves for war against her;rise up, and let us go up against her at noon. Woe to us! for the day has gone down, forthe shadows of the day fail.

6:5 Rise, and let us go up against her bynight, and destroy her foundations.

6:6 For thus saith the Lord, Hew down hertrees, array a numerous force againstJerusalem. O false city; [there is] alloppression in her.

6:7 As a cistern cools water, so her wickedness cools her, ungodliness andmisery shall be heard in her, [as] continually

before her.

6:1 O ye children of Benjamin, gather yourselves to flee out of the midst ofJerusalem, and blow the trumpet in Tekoa,and set up a sign of fire in Bethhaccerem: forevil appeareth out of the north, and greatdestruction.

6:2 I have likened the daughter of Zion to acomely and delicate woman.

6:3 The shepherds with their flocks shall comeunto her; they shall pitch their tents againsther round about; they shall feed every one inhis place.

6:4 Prepare ye war against her; arise, and letus go up at noon. Woe unto us! for the daygoeth away, for the shadows of the evening arestretched out.

6:5 Arise, and let us go by night, and let usdestroy her palaces.

6:6 For thus hath the LORD of hosts said,Hew ye down trees, and cast a mount againstJerusalem: this is the city to be visited; she is wholly oppression in the midst of her.

6:7 As a fountain casteth out her waters, soshe casteth out her wickedness: violence andspoil is heard in her; before me continually is

grief and wounds.

6:8 Thou shalt be chastened, O Jerusalem, with pain and the scourge, lest my souldepart from thee; lest I make thee a desertland, which shall not be inhabited.

6:9 For thus saith the Lord, Glean, gleanthoroughly as a vine the remnant of Israel:turn back [your hands] as a grape-gathererto his basket.

6:10 To whom shall I speak, and testify, thathe may hearken? behold, thine ears areuncircumcised, and they shall not be able tohear: behold, the word of the Lord is becometo them a reproach, they will not at all desireit.

6:11 And I allowed my wrath to come to full, yet I kept [it] in, and did not utterly destroythem: I will pour it out on the children without, and on the assembly of young mentogether: for man and woman shall be takentogether, the old man with him that is full ofdays.

6:12 And their houses shall be turned toothers, [with] their fields and their wivestogether: for I will stretch out my hand uponthe inhabitants of this land, saith the Lord.

6:13 For from the least of them even to thegreatest they have all committed iniquity;from the priest even to the false prophet theyhave all wrought falsely.

6:14 And they healed the breach of mypeople [imperfectly], making light [of it],and saying, Peace, peace, and where ispeace?

6:15 They were ashamed because they failed;

yet they were not ashamed as those who are[truly] ashamed, and they knew not theirown disgrace: therefore shall they [utterly]fall when they do fall, and in the time of visitation shall they perish, said the Lord.

6:16 Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths ofthe Lord; and see what is the good way, and walk in it, and ye shall find purification for your souls. But they said, We will not walk[in them].

6:17 I have set watchmen over you, [saying],

6:8 Be thou instructed, O Jerusalem, lest mysoul depart from thee; lest I make theedesolate, a land not inhabited.

6:9 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall

throughly glean the remnant of Israel as a vine: turn back thine hand as a grapegathererinto the baskets.

6:10 To whom shall I speak, and give warning,that they may hear? behold, their ear isuncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the LORD is unto them areproach; they have no delight in it.

6:11 Therefore I am full of the fury of theLORD; I am weary with holding in: I will pour

it out upon the children abroad, and upon theassembly of young men together: for even thehusband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with him that is full of days.

6:12 And their houses shall be turned untoothers, with their fields and wives together:for I will stretch out my hand upon theinhabitants of the land, saith the LORD.

6:13 For from the least of them even unto thegreatest of them every one is given to

covetousness; and from the prophet even untothe priest every one dealeth falsely.

6:14 They have healed also the hurt of thedaughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace,peace; when there is no peace.

6:15 Were they ashamed when they hadcommitted abomination? nay, they were notat all ashamed, neither could they blush:therefore they shall fall among them that fall:at the time that I visit them they shall be cast

down, saith the LORD.

6:16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

6:17 Also I set watchmen over you, saying,Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But theysaid, We will not hearken.

6:18 Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, Ocongregation, what is among them.

Hear ye the sound of the trumpet. But theysaid, We will not hear [it].

6:18 Therefore have the nations heard, andthey that feed their flocks.

6:19 Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evilsupon this people, [even] the fruit of theirrebellions; for they have not heeded my words, and they have rejected my law.

6:20 Wherefore do ye bring me frankincensefrom Saba, and cinnamon from a land afaroff? your whole-burnt-offerings are notacceptable, and your sacrifices have not beenpleasant to me.

6:21 Therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, I[will] bring weakness upon this people, andthe fathers and sons shall be weak together;the neighbour and his friend shall perish.

6:22 Thus saith the Lord, Behold, a peoplecomes from the north, and nations shall bestirred up from the end of the earth.

6:23 They shall lay hold on bow and spear;[the people] is fierce, and will have nomercy; their voice is as the roaring sea; they

shall array themselves for war against theeas fire on horses and chariots, O daughter ofSion.

6:24 We have heard the report of them: ourhands are weakened: anguish has seized us,the pangs as of a woman in travail.

6:25 Go not forth into the field, and walk notin the ways; for the sword of the enemylingers round about.

6:26 O daughter of my people, gird thyself with sackcloth: sprinkle [thyself] with ashes;make for thyself pitiable lamentation, [as]the mourning for a beloved [son]: for misery will come suddenly upon you.

6:27 I have caused thee to be tried amongtried nations, and thou shalt know me whenI have tried their way.

6:28 [They are] all disobedient, walkingperversely: [they are] brass and iron; they

are all corrupted.

6:19 Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evilupon this people, even the fruit of theirthoughts, because they have not hearkenedunto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it.

6:20 To what purpose cometh there to meincense from Sheba, and the sweet cane froma far country? your burnt offerings are notacceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me.

6:21 Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will lay stumblingblocks before this people,and the fathers and the sons together shall fallupon them; the neighbour and his friend shallperish.

6:22 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, a peoplecometh from the north country, and a greatnation shall be raised from the sides of theearth.

6:23 They shall lay hold on bow and spear;they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voiceroareth like the sea; and they ride uponhorses, set in array as men for war againstthee, O daughter of Zion.

6:24 We have heard the fame thereof: our

hands wax feeble: anguish hath taken hold ofus, and pain, as of a woman in travail.

6:25 Go not forth into the field, nor walk bythe way; for the sword of the enemy and fearis on every side.

6:26 O daughter of my people, gird thee withsackcloth, and wallow thyself in ashes: makethee mourning, as for an only son, most bitterlamentation: for the spoiler shall suddenlycome upon us.

6:27 I have set thee for a tower and a fortressamong my people, that thou mayest know andtry their way.

6:28 They are all grievous revolters, walking with slanders: they are brass and iron; theyare all corrupters.

6:29 The bellows are burned, the lead isconsumed of the fire; the founder melteth in vain: for the wicked are not plucked away.

6:30 Reprobate silver shall men call them,

6:29 The bellows have failed from the fire,the lead has failed: the silversmith works athis trade in vain; their wickedness is notconsumed.

6:30 Call ye them reprobate silver, becausethe Lord has rejected them.

because the LORD hath rejected them.

7:1

7:2 Hear ye the word of the Lord, all Judea.

7:3 Thus saith the Lord God of Israel,Correct your ways and your devices, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.

7:4 Trust not in yourselves with lying words,for they shall not profit you at all, saying, Itis the temple of the Lord, the temple of theLord.

7:5 For if ye thoroughly correct your waysand your practices, and do indeed execute judgment between a man and his neighbour;

7:6 and oppress not the stranger, and theorphan, and the widow, and shed notinnocent blood in this place, and go not afterstrange gods to your hurt:

7:7 then will I cause you to dwell in thisplace, in the land which I gave to yourfathers of old and for ever.

7:8 But whereas ye have trusted in lying words, whereby ye shall not be profited;

7:9 and ye murder, and commit adultery,and steal, and swear falsely, and burnincense to Baal, and are gone after strangegods whom ye know not,

7:10 so that it is evil with you; yet have yecome, and stood before me in the house, whereon my name is called, and ye havesaid, We have refrained from doing all theseabominations.7:11 Is my house, whereon myname is called, a den of robbers in youreyes? And, behold, I have seen [it], saith theLord.

7:12 For go ye to my place with is in Selo, where I caused my name to dwell before, and

see what I did to it because of the wickedness of my people Israel.

7:1 The word that came to Jeremiah from theLORD, saying,

7:2 Stand in the gate of the LORD's house, andproclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the LORD, all ye of Judah, that enterin at these gates to worship the LORD.

7:3 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God ofIsrael, Amend your ways and your doings, andI will cause you to dwell in this place.

7:4 Trust ye not in lying words, saying, Thetemple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD,The temple of the LORD, are these.

7:5 For if ye throughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbour;

7:6 If ye oppress not the stranger, the

fatherless, and the widow, and shed notinnocent blood in this place, neither walk afterother gods to your hurt:

7:7 Then will I cause you to dwell in this place,in the land that I gave to your fathers, for everand ever.

7:8 Behold, ye trust in lying words, thatcannot profit.

7:9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit

adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incenseunto Baal, and walk after other gods whom yeknow not;

7:10 And come and stand before me in thishouse, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all theseabominations?

7:11 Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold,even I have seen it, saith the LORD.

7:12 But go ye now unto my place which was

7:13 And now, because ye have done all thesedeeds, and I spoke to you, but ye hearkenednot to me; and I called you, but ye answerednot;

7:14 therefore I also will do to the house whereon my name is called, wherein ye trust,and to the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I did to Selo.

7:15 And I will cast you out of my sight, as Icast away your brethren, all the seed ofEphraim.

7:16 Therefore pray not thou for this people,and intercede not for them to be pitied, yea,

pray not, and approach me not for them: forI will not hearken [unto thee].

7:17 Seest thou not what they do in the citiesof Juda, and in the streets of Jerusalem?

7:18 Their children gather wood, and theirfathers kindle a fire, and their women kneaddough, to make cakes to the host of heaven;and they have poured out drink-offerings tostrange gods, that they might provoke me toanger.

7:19 Do they provoke me to anger? saith theLord: do they not [provoke] themselves, thattheir faces may be ashamed?

7:20 Therefore thus saith the Lord; Behold,my anger and wrath shall be poured outupon this place, and upon the men, andupon the cattle, and upon every tree of theirfield, and upon the fruits of the land; and itshall burn, and not be quenched.

7:21 Thus saith the Lord, Gather your whole- burnt-offerings with your meat-offerings,and eat flesh.

7:22 For I spoke not to your fathers, andcommanded them not in the day wherein I brought them up out of the land of Egypt,concerning whole-burnt-offerings andsacrifice:

7:23 but I commanded them this thing,saying, Hear ye my voice, and I will be to you

a God, and ye shall be to me a people: and walk ye in all my ways which I shall

in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first,and see what I did to it for the wickedness ofmy people Israel.

7:13 And now, because ye have done all these

works, saith the LORD, and I spake unto you,rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not;and I called you, but ye answered not;

7:14 Therefore will I do unto this house, whichis called by my name, wherein ye trust, andunto the place which I gave to you and to yourfathers, as I have done to Shiloh.

7:15 And I will cast you out of my sight, as Ihave cast out all your brethren, even the wholeseed of Ephraim.

7:16 Therefore pray not thou for this people,neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neithermake intercession to me: for I will not hearthee.

7:17 Seest thou not what they do in the citiesof Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?

7:18 The children gather wood, and the fatherskindle the fire, and the women knead theirdough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven,

and to pour out drink offerings unto othergods, that they may provoke me to anger.

7:19 Do they provoke me to anger? saith theLORD: do they not provoke themselves to theconfusion of their own faces?

7:20 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD;Behold, mine anger and my fury shall bepoured out upon this place, upon man, andupon beast, and upon the trees of the field,and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall

burn, and shall not be quenched.

7:21 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God ofIsrael; Put your burnt offerings unto yoursacrifices, and eat flesh.

7:22 For I spake not unto your fathers, norcommanded them in the day that I broughtthem out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:

7:23 But this thing commanded I them,

saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God,and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all

command you, that it may be well with you.

7:24 But they hearkened not to me, and theirear gave no heed, but they walked in theimaginations of their evil heart, and went

backward, and not forward;

7:25 from the day that their fathers wentforth out of the land of Egypt, even until thisday. And I sent to you all my servants, theprophets, by day and early in the morning: yea, I sent [them],

7:26 but they hearkened not to me, and theirear gave no heed; and they made their neckharder than their fathers.

7:27 Therefore thou shalt speak this word tothem;

7:28 This is the nation which has nothearkened to the voice of the Lord, norreceived correction: truth has failed fromtheir mouth.

7:29 Cut off thine hair, and cast it away, andtake up a lamentation on thy lips; for theLord has reprobated and rejected thegeneration that does these things.

7:30 For the children of Juda have wroughtevil before me, saith the Lord; they have settheir abominations in the house on whichmy name is called, to defile it.

7:31 And they have built the altar ofTapheth, which is in the valley of the son ofEnnom, to burn their sons and theirdaughters with fire; which I did notcommand them [to do], neither did I designit in my heart.

7:32 Therefore, behold, the days come, saiththe Lord, when they shall no more say, Thealtar of Tapheth, and the valley of the son ofEnnom, but, The valley of the slain; and theyshall bury in Tapheth, for want of room.

7:33 And the dead bodies of this people shall be for food to the birds of the sky, and to the wild beasts of the earth; and there shall benone to drive [them] away.

7:34 And I will destroy out of the cities ofJuda, and the streets of Jerusalem, the voice

the ways that I have commanded you, that itmay be well unto you.

7:24 But they hearkened not, nor inclinedtheir ear, but walked in the counsels and in

the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.

7:25 Since the day that your fathers cameforth out of the land of Egypt unto this day Ihave even sent unto you all my servants theprophets, daily rising up early and sendingthem:

7:26 Yet they hearkened not unto me, norinclined their ear, but hardened their neck:they did worse than their fathers.

7:27 Therefore thou shalt speak all these words unto them; but they will not hearken tothee: thou shalt also call unto them; but they will not answer thee.

7:28 But thou shalt say unto them, This is anation that obeyeth not the voice of the LORDtheir God, nor receiveth correction: truth isperished, and is cut off from their mouth.

7:29 Cut off thine hair, O Jerusalem, and cast

it away, and take up a lamentation on highplaces; for the LORD hath rejected andforsaken the generation of his wrath.

7:30 For the children of Judah have done evilin my sight, saith the LORD: they have settheir abominations in the house which iscalled by my name, to pollute it.

7:31 And they have built the high places ofTophet, which is in the valley of the son ofHinnom, to burn their sons and their

daughters in the fire; which I commandedthem not, neither came it into my heart.

7:32 Therefore, behold, the days come, saiththe LORD, that it shall no more be calledTophet, nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter: for they shall buryin Tophet, till there be no place.

7:33 And the carcases of this people shall bemeat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth; and none shall fray them

away.

of them that make merry, and the voice ofthem that rejoice, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride; forthe whole land shall become a desolation.

7:34 Then will I cause to cease from the citiesof Judah, and from the streets of Jerusalem,the voice of mirth, and the voice of gladness,the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice ofthe bride: for the land shall be desolate.

8:1 At that time, saith the Lord, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Juda, andthe bones of his princes, and the bones of thepriests, and the bones of the prophets, andthe bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem,out of their graves;

:2 and they shall spread them out to the sun,and the moon, and to all the stars, and to allthe host of heaven, which they have loved,and which they have served, and after whichthey have walked, and to which they haveheld, and which they have worshipped; theyshall not be mourned for, neither shall they be buried; but they shall be for an exampleon the face of the earth,

8:3 because they chose death rather thanlife, even to all the remnant that are left ofthat family, in every place whither I shalldrive them out.

8:4 For thus saith the Lord, Shall not he that

falls arise? or he that turns away, shall henot turn back again?

8:5 Wherefore has this my people turnedaway with a shameless revolting, andstrengthened themselves in their willfulness,and refused to return?

8:6 Hearken, I pray you, and hear: will theynot speak thus, There is no man that repentsof his wickedness, saying, What have I done?the runner has failed from his course, as a

tired horse in his neighing.

8:7 Yea, the stork in the heaven knows hertime, [also] the turtle-dove and wildswallow; the sparrows observe the times oftheir coming in; but this my people knowsnot the judgments of the Lord.

8:8 How will ye say, We are wise, and thelaw of the Lord is with us? In vain have thescribes used a false pen.

8:9 The wise men are ashamed, andalarmed, and taken; because they have

8:4 Moreover thou shalt say unto them, Thus

saith the LORD; Shall they fall, and not arise?shall he turn away, and not return?

8:5 Why then is this people of Jerusalemslidden back by a perpetual backsliding? theyhold fast deceit, they refuse to return.

8:6 I hearkened and heard, but they spake notaright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? everyone turned to his course, as the horse rushethinto the battle.

8:7 Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth herappointed times; and the turtle and the craneand the swallow observe the time of theircoming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD.

8:8 How do ye say, We are wise, and the lawof the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vainmade he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.

8:9 The wise men are ashamed, they are

dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in

rejected the word of the Lord; what wisdomis there in them?

8:10 Therefore will I give their wives toothers, and their fields to [new] inheritors;

and they shall gather their fruits, saith theLord.

8:13 There are no grapes on the vines, andthere are no figs on the fig-trees, and theleaves have fallen off.

8:14 Why do we sit still? assemble

yourselves, and let us enter into the strongcities, and let us be cast out there: for Godhas cast us out, and made us drink water ofgall, because we have sinned before him.

8:15 We assembled for peace, but there wasno prosperity; for a time of healing, but behold anxiety.

8:16 We shall hear the neighing o his swifthorses out of Dan: the whole land quaked atthe sound of the neighing of his horses; and

he shall come, and devour the land and thefullness of it; the city, and them that dwell init.

8:17 For, behold, I send forth against youdeadly serpents, which cannot be charmed,and they shall bite you

8:18 mortally with the pain of yourdistressed heart.

8:19 Behold, [there is] a sound of the cry of

the daughter of my people from a land afaroff: Is not the Lord in Sion? is there not aking there? because they have provoked me with their graven [images], and with strange vanities.

8:20 The summer is gone, the harvest ispast, and we are not saved.

8:21 For the breach of the daughter of mypeople I have been saddened: in myperplexity pangs have seized upon me as of a

woman in travail.

8:10 Therefore will I give their wives untoothers, and their fields to them that shallinherit them: for every one from the least even

unto the greatest is given to covetousness,from the prophet even unto the priest everyone dealeth falsely.

8:11 For they have healed the hurt of thedaughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace,peace; when there is no peace.

8:12 Were they ashamed when they hadcommitted abomination? nay, they were notat all ashamed, neither could they blush:therefore shall they fall among them that fall:

in the time of their visitation they shall be castdown, saith the LORD.

8:13 I will surely consume them, saith theLORD: there shall be no grapes on the vine,nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade;and the things that I have given them shallpass away from them.

8:14 Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves,and let us enter into the defenced cities, andlet us be silent there: for the LORD our God

hath put us to silence, and given us water ofgall to drink, because we have sinned againstthe LORD.

8:15 We looked for peace, but no good came;and for a time of health, and behold trouble!

8:16 The snorting of his horses was heardfrom Dan: the whole land trembled at thesound of the neighing of his strong ones; forthey are come, and have devoured the land,and all that is in it; the city, and those that

dwell therein.

8:17 For, behold, I will send serpents,cockatrices, among you, which will not becharmed, and they shall bite you, saith theLORD.

8:18 When I would comfort myself againstsorrow, my heart is faint in me.

8:19 Behold the voice of the cry of thedaughter of my people because of them that

dwell in a far country: Is not the LORD inZion? is not her king in her? Why have they

8:22 And is there no balm in Galaad, or isthere no physician there? why has not thehealing of the daughter of my people takenplace?

8:21 For the hurt of the daughter of my peopleam I hurt; I am black; astonishment hathtaken hold on me.

8:22 Is there no balm in Gilead; is there nophysician there? why then is not the health ofthe daughter of my people recovered?

9:1 Who will give water to my head, and afountain of tears to my eyes? then would I weep for this my people day and night,[even] for the slain of the daughter of mypeople.

9:2 Who would give me a most distant lodgein the wilderness, that I might leave mypeople, and depart from them? for they allcommit adultery, an assembly of treacherousmen.

9:3 And they have bent their tongue like a bow: falsehood and not faithfulness hasprevailed upon the earth; for they have gone

on from evil to evil, and have not known me,saith the Lord.

9:4 Beware ye each of his neighbour, andtrust ye not in your brethren: for every one will surely supplant, and every friend will walk craftily.

9:5 Every one will mock his friend; they willnot speak truth: their tongue has learned tospeak falsehoods; they have committediniquity, they ceased not, so as to return.

9:6 [There is] usury upon usury, and deceitupon deceit: they would not know me, saiththe Lord.

9:7 Therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will try them with fire, and prove them; for I will do [thus] because of the wickedness ofthe daughter of my people.

9:8 Their tongue is a wounding arrow; the words of their mouth are deceitful: [one]

speaks peaceably to his neighbour, but inhimself retains enmity.

9:1 Oh that my head were waters, and mineeyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep dayand night for the slain of the daughter of mypeople!

9:2 Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodgingplace of wayfaring men; that I might leave mypeople, and go from them! for they be alladulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.

9:3 And they bend their tongues like their bowfor lies: but they are not valiant for the truthupon the earth; for they proceed from evil toevil, and they know not me, saith the LORD.

9:4 Take ye heed every one of his neighbour,and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and everyneighbour will walk with slanders.

9:5 And they will deceive every one hisneighbour, and will not speak the truth: theyhave taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity.

9:6 Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit;through deceit they refuse to know me, saith

the LORD.

9:7 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts,Behold, I will melt them, and try them; forhow shall I do for the daughter of my people?

9:8 Their tongue is as an arrow shot out; itspeaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to hisneighbour with his mouth, but in heart helayeth his wait.

9:9 Shall I not visit them for these things?

saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avengedon such a nation as this?

9:9 Shall I not visit for these things? saiththe Lord: and shall not my soul be avengedon such a people as this?

9:10 Take up a lamentation for themountains, and a mournful dirge for thepaths of the wilderness, for they are desolatefor want of men; they heard not the sound oflife from the birds of the sky, nor the cattle:they were amazed, they are gone.

9:11 And I will remove the inhabitants ofJerusalem, and make it a dwelling-place ofdragons; and I will utterly waste the cities ofJuda, so that they shall not be inhabited.

9:12 Who is the wise man, that he mayunderstand this? and he that has the word ofthe mouth of the Lord [addressed] to him,let him tell you wherefore the land has beendestroyed, has been ravaged by fire like adesert, so that no one passes through it.

9:13 And the Lord said to me, Because theyhave forsaken my law, which I set beforethem, and have not hearkened to my voice;

9:14 but went after the lusts of their evil

heart, and after the idols which their fatherstaught them [to worship]:

9:15 therefore thus saith the Lord God ofIsrael, Behold, I will feed them with troubleand will cause them to drink water of gall:

9:16 and I will scatter them among thenations, to them whom neither they northeir fathers knew; and I will send a swordupon them, until I have consumed them withit.

9:17 Thus saith the Lord, Call ye themourning women, and let them come; andsend to the wise women, and let them uttertheir voice;

9:18 and let them take up a lamentation for you, and let your eyes pour down tears, and your eyelids drop water.

9:19 For a voice of lamentation has beenheard in Sion, How are we become

wretched! we are greatly ashamed, for wehave forsaken the land, and have abandoned

9:10 For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the habitationsof the wilderness a lamentation, because theyare burned up, so that none can pass through

them; neither can men hear the voice of thecattle; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast are fled; they are gone.

9:11 And I will make Jerusalem heaps, and aden of dragons; and I will make the cities ofJudah desolate, without an inhabitant.

9:12 Who is the wise man, that mayunderstand this? and who is he to whom themouth of the LORD hath spoken, that he maydeclare it, for what the land perisheth and is

burned up like a wilderness, that none passeththrough?

9:13 And the LORD saith, Because they haveforsaken my law which I set before them, andhave not obeyed my voice, neither walkedtherein;

9:14 But have walked after the imagination oftheir own heart, and after Baalim, which theirfathers taught them:

9:15 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts,the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them,even this people, with wormwood, and givethem water of gall to drink.

9:16 I will scatter them also among theheathen, whom neither they nor their fathershave known: and I will send a sword afterthem, till I have consumed them.

9:17 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that

they may come; and send for cunning women,that they may come:

9:18 And let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters.

9:19 For a voice of wailing is heard out ofZion, How are we spoiled! we are greatlyconfounded, because we have forsaken theland, because our dwellings have cast us out.

9:20 Yet hear the word of the LORD, O ye

our tabernacles!

9:20 Hear now, ye women, the word of God,and let your ears receive the words of hismouth, and teach your daughters

lamentation, and [every] woman herneighbour a dirge.

9:21 For death has come up through your windows, it has entered into our land, todestroy the infants without, and the youngmen from the streets.

9:22 And the carcases of the men shall be foran example on the face of the field of yourland, like grass after the mower, and thereshall be none to gather [them].

9:23 Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wiseman boast in his wisdom, and let not thestrong man boast in his strength, and let notthe rich man boast in his wealth;

9:24 but let him that boasts boast in this, theunderstanding and knowing that I am theLord that exercise mercy, and judgment, andrighteousness, upon the earth; for in thesethings is my pleasure, saith the Lord.

9:25 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will visit upon all the circumcisedtheir uncircumcision;

9:26 on Egypt, and on Idumea, and onEdom, and on the children of Ammon, andon the children of Moab, and on every onethat shaves his face round about, [even]them that dwell in the wilderness; for all theGentiles are uncircumcised in flesh, and allthe house of Israel are uncircumcised [in]their hearts.

9:23 Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wiseman glory in his wisdom, neither let themighty man glory in his might, let not the rich

man glory in his riches:

9:24 But let him that glorieth glory in this,that he understandeth and knoweth me, that Iam the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: forin these things I delight, saith the LORD.

9:25 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD,that I will punish all them which arecircumcised with the uncircumcised;

9:26 Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and thechildren of Ammon, and Moab, and all thatare in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations areuncircumcised, and all the house of Israel areuncircumcised in the heart.

10:1 Hear ye the word of the Lord, which hehas spoken to you, O house of Israel.

10:2 Thus saith the Lord, Learn ye not the ways of the heathen, and be not alarmed atthe signs of the sky; for they are alarmed atthem, [falling] on their faces.

10:3 For the customs of the nations are vain;it is a tree cut out of the forest, the work ofthe carpenter, or a molten image.

10:4 [They are] beautified with silver and

10:1 Hear ye the word which the LORDspeaketh unto you, O house of Israel:

10:2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the wayof the heathen, and be not dismayed at thesigns of heaven; for the heathen are dismayedat them.

10:3 For the customs of the people are vain:for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the

axe.

gold, they fix them with hammers and nails;

10:5 they will set them up that they may notmove;

10:6 it is wrought silver, they will not walk, itis forged silver

10:9 [brought] from Tharsis, gold will comefrom Mophaz, and the work of goldsmiths:[they are] all the works of craftsmen, they will clothe themselves with blue and scarlet.

10:10 They must certainly be borne, for theycannot ride [of themselves]. Fear them not;for they cannot do any evil, and there is nogood in them.

10:11 Thus shall ye say to them, Let the gods which have not made heaven and earthperish from off the earth, and from underthis sky.

10:12 It is the Lord that made the earth byhis strength, who set up the world by his

wisdom, and by his understanding stretchedout the sky,

10:13 and set abundance of waters in the sky,and brought up clouds from the ends of theearth; he made lightnings for the rain, and brought forth light out of his treasures.

10:14 Every man is deprived of knowledge,every goldsmith is confounded because ofhis graven images; for he has cast false gods,there is no breath in them.

10:15 They are vain works, wrought inmockery; in the time of their visitation theyshall perish.

10:16 Such is not the portion of Jacob; for hethat formed all things, he is his inheritance;the Lord is his name.

10:17 He has gathered thy substance from without the lodged in choice [vessels].

10:18 For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I[will] overthrow the inhabitants of this land

10:4 They deck it with silver and with gold;they fasten it with nails and with hammers,that it move not.

10:5 They are upright as the palm tree, but

speak not: they must needs be borne, becausethey cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for theycannot do evil, neither also is it in them to dogood.

10:6 Forasmuch as there is none like untothee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name isgreat in might.

10:7 Who would not fear thee, O King ofnations? for to thee doth it appertain:forasmuch as among all the wise men of the

nations, and in all their kingdoms, there isnone like unto thee.

10:8 But they are altogether brutish andfoolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.

10:9 Silver spread into plates is brought fromTarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work ofthe workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are allthe work of cunning men.

10:10 But the LORD is the true God, he is theliving God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nationsshall not be able to abide his indignation.

10:11 Thus shall ye say unto them, The godsthat have not made the heavens and the earth,even they shall perish from the earth, andfrom under these heavens.

10:12 He hath made the earth by his power, hehath established the world by his wisdom, and

hath stretched out the heavens by hisdiscretion.
