Business CardDescription:Matching letterhead and business card designed using a personally created logo.

Date:2/27/13

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 05Eric Lybbert

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Illustrator and InDesign

Objectives:Create a new logo to fit a company. Design consistant layouts for letterhead and business cardUse the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign.

Process:I created the logo in Illustrator using the paint tool and the pencil. I also used typography to create the text part of the logo. I then created a business card with the logo. I placed the logo on the top of half of the business card, and placed it in a center alignment because I felt that right or left alignment took the eye off of the card. For the bottom half of the card I used the rectangle tool to create a box, colored it gray, changed the stroke to be more interesting, and then added the information.

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 05Eric Lybbert

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Illustrator and InDesign

Objectives:Create a new logo to fit a company. Design consistant layouts for letterhead and business cardUse the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign.

Process:I created the logo in Illustrator using the paint tool and the pencil. I used typography to create the text part of the logo. I then positioned the logo I placed into InDesign in the top left hand corner, making sure it was .5 inches away from the edge. I took some of the logo name and placed it next to the logo in a black rectangle box. I used a gradient on this black box to help it flow toward my contact information in the right corner.

MontageDescription:A montage made by blending two or more images, and the use of an inspirational quote for the typography.

Date:2/15/13

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 05Eric Lybbert

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Photoshop and Nikon V1 Camera

Objectives:Learn how to manage Photoshop layers.Learn to blend images together smoothly using masks.Apply typography that works well with photos.

Process:I placed the background image in Photoshop. I selected the family picture and moved it into the background image. I saturated the background image and used curves to highlight different areas. I added the picture of the basketball player and added a mask. With black paint and a 100% opacity, soft-edged brush, I painted away the hard images. With a larger black brush at 40% opacity I blended the images together to create flow from one to the next. I created a new layer and painted it all black. I then used the gradient tool to create the darker corners.

FlierDescription:Black and white flier to promote a graduate leadership conference.

Date:1/25/13

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 05Eric Lybbert

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe InDesign

Objectives:Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.Use basic InDesign skills to make basic flier layout.Create a project folder with all files to keep links intact.

Process:First I sketched my ideas for a layout on a piece of paper. Then I took one of my ideas and started to design this flier in InDesign. I started with making the title because I had the idea in mind of making the “t” in “graduate” look like a graduation cap. I then made sure I had contrast with the black rectangle boxes that outline the text. I then took my image (which was given to me to use) and made it transparent so that I could have text overlap it. I made different words stand out to give them contrast as well. I made sure that my alignment was correct, and resized different parts until I felt like the flier flowed and looked proportional. The last step was to add the Vouant Communications logo.

Logos Description:Three logo variations for the same company.

Date:2/22/13

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 05Eric Lybbert

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Create a variation of logos for the same company.Use basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:I used the ellipse tool to create the circles for the basketballs. I used the paint tool a lot to draw the other lines such as to represent to court. Much of the other steps involved typography and changing the size and font of the texts until I thought that they stood out and had contrast. I also used the gradient tool on the basketball color as well as the color of the threads on the top logo. The hardest part was making the “T” stand out in the top logo.

BrochureDescription:A two sided folding brochure.

Date:3/29/13

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 05Eric Lybbert

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe InDesignAdobe IllustratorAdobe Photoshop

Objectives:Set up and align a two-sided document that folds appropriately.Learn how to text wrap around an image.Use paragraph styles in InDesign.

Process:I set up the brochure layout in Adobe InDesign. For my layout I wanted to have it be simple, so I had my front and back be on one page, and the middle was on one page. I wanted the pictures to be visible on the front and the inside, so I left a little over an inch for pictures, and just made it so the brochure would fold before the pictures so you could see them in both places.

For the front and back (page 1) I used a background of a basketball floor that faded into black. I used a logo that I have created in past projects and put it in the middle to grab attention. I used the slogan “Handle It” in a Chalkduster font because I thought it looked like the scuffs that shoes make on a court. I put it in white to make it tie in with the threads of the basketball.

On the left side of page 1, I put a picture as well as the motto of the company. I used the ‘text wrap’ option in InDesign to wrap the text around this picture. I also had to edit this picture in Photoshop by adding a mask and painting away part of the picture to help it blend better.

On the inside (page 2) I used a gradient as the background to tie in with the threads of the basketball on the logo. I also took the outline of the basketball and enlarged it in Photoshop to add an interesting design to the background. I used gray boxes to help the text stand out against the gradient, and I had the boxes get darker as the gradient got darker. The last step was to add the text.

Event Ad Description:A color, full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraiser.

Date:2/2/13

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 05Eric Lybbert

Program(s)/Tools:Microsoft WordEpson Scanner

Objectives:Find, scan and import an image.Create a design that is full-bleed.Use text boxes to help with layout in Word.Insert and edit images in Word.

Process:First I found a picture from a magazine and scanned it. Then I inserted it into a Word document. I then played with the picture settings and made the picture the size that I wanted and the color, as well as took the background away. After, I inserted a rectangle shape and filled it with different shades of blue until I found what color worked with the color. I then typed the text in a text box, changed the fonts and colors to have repetition and made sure everything was aligned.

ImagingDescription:A personally taken photograph that was edited using Photoshop.

Date:2/2/13

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 05Eric Lybbert

Program(s)/Tools:Nikon V1 CameraAdobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn basic photography skills.Take a quality image, then download it.Size and crop the image.Use tools in Photoshop to desaturate, add a filter, and select portions of the image.

Process:I took this picture using my Nikon V1 camera. I liked this shot because I felt that it had good flow with the slope of the roof. I also liked the composition. I then took my image into Photoshop and cropped it into a 6x6 inch square. I then selected the barn and clicked on inverse to get the background selected. I desaturated the background color and added a filter. The filter I used was called Rough Pastels.

Web PageDescription:A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo.

Date:3/14/13

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 05Eric Lybbert

Program(s)/Tools:Text WranglerPhotoshop

Objectives:Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.Write content to describe the process of the logo and how it appeals to the target audience.Design a web page using HTML.Develop a knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS.Identify hex colors.Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attatch as one file.

Process:I created this web page using a text editor called TextWrangler. Before this project, I did not even know what HTML/CSS was. I was amazed at all of the things you could do with one program to make a web page.First, I completed the HTML coding by inserting my image and writing the content. I then linked a pre-made CSS document to my HTML. I went through the CSS document and changed the fonts to Chalkduster for the title, and Verdana for the header and body text. I changed the colors to match my logo. I got these colors by opening Photoshop and using the eyedropper tool to get the Hex values. I then centered my logo by adding pixels to the image line in the CSS document. I would say that CSS is harder to work with than HTML.

Flier 2Description:Color flier to promote a business.

Date:4/5/13

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 05Eric Lybbert

Program(s)/Tools:PhotoshopAdobe InDesign

Objectives:Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.Edit images used in Photoshop.Use basic InDesign skills to make basic flier layout.

Process:First, I placed into my logo that I created in previous weeks, as well as a couple other images I had in mind for the flier. I then edited an image of the basketball floor in Photoshop and blended it into a box with a gradient using a mask and the paint tool. I inserted this into InDesign, placed my logo on top, and then inserted my information. I used the paragraph styles tool to have consistent typography. I changed the transparency of the background as well so that the text would stand out better. I then placed the photograph in, which I had previously edited in Photoshop. I decided to do an entire new project instead of project corrections because I wanted to practice with InDesign and Photoshop, and see if I had got faster than the previous time we made a flier.
