Bible Point

Bible Basisn Jesus tells about the 10 servants and their gifts.

Jesus told of a master who entrusted 10 of his servants with one coin, or talent, apiece. The master was going away, and the servants were to wisely use the money until their master’s return. All but one servant put the money to work and earned more. That one servant, fearing the master, hid his coin. When the master returned, he rejoiced over the servants whose investments had multiplied. But the master’s anger flared at the servant who’d neglected his gift, and it was taken from him.

When you read today’s passage, you’re likely to think, “Hmm, this seems a lot like the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30).” And you’d be right. It is very similar. It’s likely that as he taught, Jesus used variations on the same theme to get across different points. In Matthew, the main point is that we all have different gifts that we’re to use for the Lord. In this passage in Luke, the idea is that we all need to be faithful in living for the Lord.

The idea of a nobleman going to a faraway country to be appointed as king may seem strange to us, but that’s just what Herod’s sons had done: They went to Rome to stake their claims on the kingdom. So the people hearing Jesus tell this parable would have been familiar with this concept.

It’s likely that Jesus told this story to make people think about his going away and returning. Jesus’ followers wanted to make him king right away, but that wasn’t in Jesus’ plan. Jesus’ kingdom would not be physically established on earth but would be spiritual and would be fulfilled only after Jesus’ Second Coming. In the meantime, his people were to be faithful to him and his people.

Welcome TimeSUPPLIES: “Perfect Present Name Tags” (p. 22), markers, safety pins or tape• Bend down and make eye contact with children as they arrive.• Greet each child individually with an enthusiastic smile.• Thank each child for coming to class today.• As children arrive, ask them about last week’s lesson. Use questions such as “Who

was someone you helped last week?” and “Did you ask anyone for help? What was it like?”

• Say: Today we’re going to learn that we can help others with what God gives us.

• Hand out the present name tags children made during Lesson 1, and help children attach name tags to their clothing. If any of the name tags were damaged or if children weren’t in class that week, have children make new name tags using the photocopiable patterns.

• Direct children to the Let’s Get Started activities you’ve set up.

Let’s Get StartedSet up one or more of the following activities for children to do as they arrive. After

you greet each child, invite him or her to choose an activity.Circulate among the children to offer help as needed and to direct their

conversation toward today’s lesson. Ask questions such as “What are you good at doing?” or “How can you get better at doing something?”

n Option 1: You’re a StarSUPPLIES: stiff paper, construction paper, scissors, glitter glue, markers, pencils

Before class, cut two or three large star patterns from stiff paper.Set out colored construction paper, scissors, glitter glue, markers,

pencils, and the star patterns. Allow each child to trace a star pattern onto a sheet of construction paper, cut out the star, and write his or her name in the center of the star. Then have each child draw on the star a picture of something he or she does well, such as playing soccer, drawing, or being friendly. If children have a difficult time thinking of special talents, share with them special things you’ve noticed about them.

Let children decorate the tips of the stars with glitter glue. Then have each child tape a star to the end of a chopstick. Tell children that today they’ll learn how we can help others with what God gives us.

n Option 2: Hidden PicturesSUPPLIES: white paper, white candles or crayons, watercolor paints, cotton swabs, newspaper

Cover a table with newspaper. Set out watercolor paints, cotton swabs, white candles or crayons, and white paper.

Have children find partners. Tell them to draw secret pictures for their partners using the candles or white crayons. Have children exchange the invisible pictures with their partners and then use cotton swabs dipped in watercolor paint to brush over the pictures. As the hidden pictures are revealed, ask questions such as “Isn’t it fun to have a gift from your partner?” and “Would you hide a gift someone gave you? Why or why not?” Tell the children that today they’ll hear a story about a gift that was hidden and not used. Remind them that God gives us gifts and that we can help others with what God gives us.

n Option 3: Dig That SandSUPPLIES: dishpan, clean sand, small trinkets, newspaper

Before class, fill a large dishpan half-full of clean sand. In the sand, bury small treasures such as coins, craft jewels, small erasers, or pencils.

Spread newspaper in one corner of the room. Set the dishpan of sand on the newspaper. Allow children, in groups of three or four, to take turns digging for buried treasure in the sand until each child has found three treasures.

As children discover their treasures, ask questions such as “Would you bury a treasure?” and “What should we do with treasures?” Tell children God gives each of us special treasures, and we can help others with what God gives us.

After everyone has arrived and you’re ready to move on to the Bible Story Time, encourage the children to finish what they’re doing and get ready to clean up.

n Pick Up Our ToysSUPPLIES: CD player

Lead children in singing “Pick Up Our Toys” (track 2) with the CD to the tune of “Skip to My Lou.” Encourage children to sing along as they help clean up the room.

If you want to include the names of all the children in the class, sing the song without the CD, and repeat the naming section. If you choose to use the CD, vary the names you use each week.

We will pick up our toys.We will pick up our toys.We will pick up our toys,And put them all away.

Supervise children to be sure that they don’t put any of the objects in their mouths.

Keep a small broom and dustpan handy for children to clean up any sand. Having them help clean up the room is a good way to teach responsibility.

Bible Story Timen Setting the StageSUPPLIES: bananas, gift bows, CD player

Before class, stick self-adhesive bows on the bananas, and hide them around the room. You’ll need to hide one banana for each child.

Tell children you’ll clap your hands to get their attention. Explain that when you clap, children are to stop what they’re doing, raise their hands, and focus on you. Encourage children to respond quickly so you’ll have time for all the fun activities you’ve planned.

Gather children in a circle on the floor. Say: I’ve hidden an unusual gift for each of you somewhere in our room. You’ll know it’s a gift when you see its bow. When I say “go,” find a gift, and bring it back to the circle.

After each child has returned to the circle with a banana, ask:• Were you surprised to find this gift? Why? (Yes, I didn’t expect a banana;

yes, I didn’t know bananas were gifts.)• How is this banana like a gift? (It was given to us; it’s something good for us;

it has to be opened; it has a bow on it.)• Would the gift be good if you didn’t open it or eat it? Explain. (No, it

would spoil; no, it would get black and turn rotten.)Say: Gifts that aren’t used aren’t worth much. When people give us gifts,

they want to see us enjoying the gifts and putting them to good use. Gifts are given with a lot of love, and we want to show we appreciate what’s been given to us.

Ask: • How are these banana gifts different from each other? (Their shapes are different; their bows are different colors; some have lots of speckles.)

Say: God gives us each different gifts and talents. But even though they’re different, we can help others with what God gives us.

Helping others might seem like work to some people, but when we help others as if we were helping Jesus, it makes our work a lot easier. Our Bible verse, Ephesians 6:7, says “Work...as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” Let’s sing the song that helps us remember this verse.

Lead children in singing “Work” (Ephesians 6:7) (track 15) with the CD.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!

Jesus, I’m so gladI get to work for you!And it’s so funBecause it’s all for you!

There’s a whole lotta thingsThat I need to do.Instead of doing it for others,It’s all for you.And I’m glad I get to work for you!“Work” (Ephesians 6:7) by Jay Stocker. © 2004 Group Publishing, Inc. All rights reserved.

Have children set their bananas aside to take home.

(Repeat from the beginning 2x.)

Yeah, Jesus, I’m gladI get to work for you!Yeah, I’m gladI get to work for you!

n Bible Song and Prayer TimeSUPPLIES: Bible, construction paper, scissors, CD player, basket or box

Before class, make surprise cards for this activity by cutting construction paper into 2x6-inch strips. Prepare a surprise card for each child, plus a few extras for visitors. Fold the cards in half, and stamp the flower stamp inside one of the surprise cards. Bookmark Luke 19:11-26 in the Bible you’ll be using.

Have the children sit in a circle. Say: Now it’s time to choose a Bible person to bring me the Bible marked with today’s Bible story. As we sing our Bible song, I’ll hand out the surprise cards. Don’t look inside your surprise card until the song is over.

Lead children in singing “Read God’s Book” (track 3) with the CD to the tune of “The Muffin Man.” As you sing, hand out the folded surprise cards.

Now it’s time to read God’s book,Read God’s book, read God’s book.Now it’s time to read God’s book.Let’s hear a Bible story.(Repeat 3x.)

After the song, say: You may look inside your surprise cards. The person who has the flower stamped inside his or her card will be our Bible person for today.

Identify the Bible person. Ask the Bible person to bring you the Bible. Lead the class in clapping for the Bible person, cheering, and making fun applause sound effects by slapping your thighs with your palms. Help the Bible person open the Bible to the marked place, and show children where your story comes from. Then have the Bible person sit down.

Say: [Name] was our special Bible person today. Each week, we’ll have only one special Bible person, but each one of you is a special part of our class! Today we’re all learning that we can help others with what God gives us.

Let’s say a special prayer now and ask God to help us use our gifts. I’ll pass around this basket. When the basket comes to you, put your surprise card in it and say, “God, please help me serve you.”

Have a child pass around the basket or box. After your helper has collected everyone’s surprise card, set the basket aside, and pick up the Bible. Lead children in this prayer: God, thank you for the Bible and for all the stories in it. Teach us today that

we can help others with what you give us. In Jesus’ name, amen.

n Hear and Tell the Bible StorySUPPLIES: small wrapped candies, coins from “Play Money” (p. 181), scissors

Before class, photocopy the “Play Money.” You’ll need to cut out one paper coin for each child. Place enough wrapped candies for all the children in the gift boxes from the Learning Lab.

Spread the Learning Mat: Parables of Jesus on the floor, and have the children gather around it. Set the gift boxes from the Learning Lab on the picture of the master giving each of his servants one talent. The talents represent the gifts God gives us. Say: In the last few weeks, we’ve been learning that with God’s help, we can help others. When we help others, we serve God. Let’s review the stories we’ve heard. As you name the stories, point to the pictures on the Learning Mat. So far, we’ve heard about the sower and the seeds, the son who was forgiven, and the good Samaritan. Find a partner for our review. Pause while children form pairs. Have them line up at the lower right-hand corner of the Learning Mat. This is where the path and the first story begin.

The first partners will gently step on the path and tell one thing that happened in the story of the sower and the seeds. If you’re correct, I’ll say “travel on,” and you may walk to the next story picture. Travel until you reach the boxes at the end of the path. Choose a treat, and then sit with your partner beside the Learning Mat while the next pair travels.

Continue until all the children have traveled to the gift boxes and each has a piece of candy. Say: It was fun traveling on the path, wasn’t it? And now we’ve come to the last story picture. Our story today comes from the book of Luke in the Bible. Show children the page you have marked in the Bible for the previous activity. You can help me tell the story. But first you’ll need to form three groups. Pause for the children to group themselves and be seated around the mat. This group will be the first servant in the story. This group will be the second servant. And this group will be the last servant. We’ll act out the Bible story as we go.

A very important man was going away to become king. He called his servants to him. Motion for the children to gather around you. He handed each servant a coin and said (hand each child a paper coin as you talk), “Take this gift of money, and put it to good use while I’m gone.” Point to the story picture and ask:

• What would you do with your coin? (Buy toys; save it; get ice cream.)Say: Some of the servants took the money to town and put it in the bank

or used it for business. But one servant was afraid of his master. He was so afraid he’d lose the coin and make his master angry that he wrapped the coin and buried it. Point to the picture on the Learning Mat.

Ask: • Was it a good idea to hide the coin? Explain. (Yes, then the coin would be safe; no, he might not remember where he hid it.)

Say: The man returned home, and he was now a king. He gathered his servants together and asked them how they’d used the gifts he’d given them. The first servant replied that he had earned 10 more coins with his gift. Have the first group of children tear their paper coins into 10 pieces and happily toss the pieces into the air. The king was pleased with the servant and told him he could rule 10 cities!

Ask: • How do you think that servant felt? (Rich; happy he’d been wise.)Say: The second servant said, “Sir, I earned five coins with your gift.”

Have the second group of children tear their paper coins into five pieces and joyfully toss them into the air. The king said, “Excellent! I can trust you with small things, so now you may rule over five cities.”

Ask: • How do you think this servant felt about using his gift wisely? (He was happy; he was glad; he felt good that he’d been smart.)

Page 8: Jesus Tells About the 10 Servants and Their Gifts • Lesson 13 …storage.cloversites.com/thechurchatrutledge/documents/Feb... · 2015-02-03 · Jesus Tells About the 10 Servants

• Look at the story picture. What might the servants have bought with their gifts that could help others? (They bought food and cows to help feed people; they had more money to help the poor.)

Say: The third servant said, “Here is your coin, sir. I was afraid of you, so I wrapped and hid the gift you gave me.” Have the third group of children crumple their paper coins and step on them.

Ask: • How do you think the third servant felt when he said this to the king? (Scared because he hadn’t used his gift; afraid of the king; worried that he had nothing.)

• What do you suppose the king did then? (He became angry; he took the coin from the servant.)

Say: The king was very angry with his servant. He said, “I trusted you with a gift, and you did nothing with it! You didn’t even put the money in the bank to earn interest.” The king took the coin away from the man and gave it to a servant who already had 10 coins. The king said, “If you use your gifts wisely, you’ll be given more. But if you don’t use them, they’ll be taken away.”

Ask: • Why was the king so angry? (The servant hadn’t used his gift; the servant hadn’t been wise.)

• How are the coins the king gave the servants like the gifts God gives us? (It’s up to us to use them wisely; we don’t want to hide them.)

• What kinds of gifts does God give us? (Love; special talents and skills; being kind to others.)

• What happens if you hide your gifts? (You can’t help others; you become selfish.)

• Why is it important to use the gifts God’s given us? (We’ll lose them if we don’t; we can help people with our gifts; God wants us to use them.)

Say: God has given each of us special gifts and talents. Think for a moment about something you’re good at or like to do. Pause. That’s a talent, and God wants you to share it with others. It’s important to know that we can help others with what God gives us. Now I’d like each of you to find a partner. Tell your partner one thing he or she is good at. Pause. Now tell your partner how he or she can use that talent to help someone.

God is so good! He’s given us special gifts to use. Maybe you’re a good singer and can cheer someone who’s sick by singing to them. Maybe you’re good at fixing things and can help when something’s broken around the house. Whatever your gift is, it’s important to remember that we can help others with what God gives us. Right now, let’s help each other pick up the coins we’ve scattered around.

Throw the paper bits in the trash. Fold the Learning Mat, and return it to the Learning Lab box.

If children have trouble thinking of what to say, suggest that they tell something their partners like to do or comment about how helpful they are in class. Encourage them to look for “friendship” talents such as their partners’ smiles, kind hearts, or forgiving natures.

n Do the Bible StorySUPPLIES: white paper, pencils, scissors, different colors of construction paper, glue, crayons

Before class, trim the connectors on the best friends stencils from the Learning Lab to look like simple hands extending from the figures’ sleeves.

Gather kids in the work area. Let each child trace and cut out a boy or girl using the best friends stencil of their choice from the Learning Lab. Have kids glue their cutouts to construction paper and decorate the figures to look like themselves.

Have children stand in a line or semi-circle in front of you.Say: Let’s pretend I am the king from today’s Bible story. I have a gift for

each of you.Go to each child and stamp the gift stamp on each child’s picture in one of the

figure’s hands. As you do this, say to each child: [Name of child], take this gift and put it to good use while I’m gone.

Ask: • In today’s Bible story, what did the first servant do with his money? (He used the money to make more money; he got even more with it.)

• What did the second servant do with his money? (He also used the money to make more money; he got five times as much.)

• What did the third servant do with his money? (He buried it in the ground; he gave it back to the king without using it.)

Say: The king in this Bible story reminds me of God because he acted with love and gave good gifts. God loves us and gives good gifts. God wants us to use these gifts to help others know him. We can help others with the gifts God gives us.

God gives each of us special abilities—we call them gifts—that make us good at doing things. With our special gifts, we can also help others.

Ask: • What special gifts has God given you? (I can run fast; I like to sing; I’m good at making people laugh.)

• How can you use your gifts to help others? (I can tell my mom about today’s Bible story; I can draw a picture for my grandma, who is sick.)

Have kids take their pictures back to the work area. Let them draw pictures of their gifts in the margins around their people figures. Then have them take turns acting out how they can use a special gift to help others.

Say: You did a great job! God has given each of you very special gifts. We can help others with what God gives us. By using our gifts to help

others, we show God we are thankful for all he gives to us.

Say: Jesus is pleased when we use our gifts to help others. When I call your name, show your picture and tell one way you’ll use your gifts or special abilities to help others this week. Let’s show everyone our pretty pictures.

Gather children in a circle and have them take turns laying their pictures in the center. Congratulate each child for the nice picture he or she has made.

Pockets: (Frustrated and hopping up and down) Ooh, it makes me so upset!

Teacher: Hi, Pockets. What makes you so upset?

Pockets: (Waves the paw with the paper flower attached.) I’ve been trying to cut out a pretty flower, but I can’t do it! I’m no good at cutting. I want to throw my flower away. Icky!

Teacher: I can see you’re angry, but at least you tried to cut out the flower, Pockets. That’s good.

Pockets: How can that be good?

Teacher: Because if you don’t use your talents, you won’t ever get better at them or use them to help others.

Pockets: I think I’ll just go bury my scissors.

Teacher: (Laughing gently) Oh, Pockets. Maybe the children can help you understand. Boys and girls, can you tell Pockets about our story today and how we don’t want to bury or hide our talents? (Allow time for the children to share with Pockets. Encourage them to tell Pockets the Bible Point.)

Pockets: That man who hid his coin didn’t help anyone—he only made the king angry.

Teacher: Well, Pockets, it’s important to help others, and God gives us gifts and talents to use. When we bury our talents and don’t use them, we waste what God’s given us. Children, would one of you like to use your talent to help Pockets cut out a flower? (Choose a child to cut a flower from paper and hand it to Pockets.)

Say: Look what beautiful pictures you made! See what happens when we use what God gives us? We make something beautiful for Jesus! Let’s thank Jesus for loving us enough to give us gifts.

Allow children to pray aloud if they like. Then pray: Dear Jesus, thank you that you love us so much. Thank you that you give us gifts, and thank you most of all for the gift of your friendship. We’re glad that

we can help others with what you give us. In your name, amen.

Closingn Cutting UpSUPPLIES: children’s scissors, paper, tape

Before class, cut a raggedy-looking flower from a piece of paper, and tape it to Pockets’ paw. Place a pair of children’s scissors in Pockets’ pouch with the handles sticking out.

Have children sit in a circle. Take out Pockets the Kangaroo, and go through the following puppet script. After you finish the script, put Pockets away and out of sight.

n Affirmation CircleSUPPLIES: none

Say: Let’s make a special circle to celebrate the gifts and talents God’s given us. Each of you will have a turn to stand in the center of the circle and hold this gift box. The rest of us will tell you things you’re good at. Then you’ll tell how you will use your gifts to help someone this week.

Clap after each child has been affirmed in the circle.Say: God gives us special gifts and talents. We don’t want to hide our

gifts like the man in the story. We want to use our gifts because we can help others with what God gives us. Join hands and let’s pray.

Pray: Dear God, thank you for the gifts you give. Show us ways to use our gifts to help others. We’re glad to serve you by helping others. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Remind children to take home any crafts they made today.

Pockets: Thank you so much! You’re good at making flowers. I’ll keep cutting with the scissors and get really good! Then I can help children by cutting out things for them or helping them learn how to cut better.

Teacher: Great idea, Pockets! I think you’ve learned that we can help others with what God gives us. ’Bye.

Pockets: ’Bye, everyone! Oh—and here’s a flower for you!

(Help Pockets toss her paper flower to the children.)

n Lively Learning: Heads ’n’ TailsBefore this activity, photocopy “Play Money” (p. 181). Cut out a coin for each child. You’ll also need a

penny to play this game.Choose one child to be the Flipper, and give this child a real penny. Say: Decide if you think the Flipper

will flip heads or tails with the penny, and turn your paper coin to heads (with the picture facing up) or tails (with the picture face down). Then the Flipper will flip the penny and tell if it lands on heads or tails. If your coin matches what the penny shows, you can demonstrate a talent for the rest of us to follow, such as hopping on one foot, whistling, or smiling.

If more than one child guesses a flip of the coin, be sure each has a chance to demonstrate a talent. Switch Flippers, and continue playing until each child has had a turn to be the Flipper.

n Make to Take: Piggy BanksSet markers or crayons, tape, construction paper, and scissors on a table.

Hand each child a plastic foam cup. Show children how to trace the large end of the cup on a piece of construction paper and then cut out the circle. Have each child draw on the circle a pig’s face with a large smiling mouth. Make sure the mouth is big enough for a coin to pass through. Carefully cut out the mouth. Tape the pig’s face to the open end of the cup. Have kids cut small triangle shapes from pink paper and tape them on the pigs for ears. As the children are working, point out that the wise servants used their money and made more, and that saving is a good way to get money to help others. Remind the children that we can help others with what God gives us.

n Treat to Eat: Crunchy CoinsProvide a variety of circular, crunchy foods to eat. Some food suggestions include round

crackers or cookies, sliced raw carrots, radishes, cucumbers, zucchini, or pickles cut in circular slices.

Have children clean their hands with baby wipes or at a nearby sink. Set a plate of “coins” on a table. Allow children to choose which crunchy coins they’d like to eat. Encourage them to retell the Bible story using the crunchy coins as the coins in the story.

n Story Picture: The Servants and Their GiftsBefore this activity, cut out a construction paper coin for each child.Hand each child a photocopy of the “Today I Learned…” handout. Set out watercolor paints, brushes,

water, glue sticks, and a paper coin for each child. Let children paint their pictures and then each glue a paper coin in the bearded man’s hand.

Family Funl Use a plastic milk jug to make a family piggy bank.

Decorate an empty milk jug by taping on paper features to resemble a pig. Talk about ways your family can save money to help others who need food or clothing. Set a monetary goal, and encourage each family member to contribute something to the piggy bank each week. When your family reaches its goal, donate the money to a local food pantry or shelter for the homeless.

Verse to Learn“Work…as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people” (Ephesians 6:7).

Ask Me...l Why did the servant hide his coin?

l What is a special gift God has given you?

l How can our family use our talents to help each other?

The Servants and Their Gifts (Luke 19:11-26)

Today your child learned that we can help others with what God gives us. Children learned about using talents rather than hiding them. They talked about using their talents to serve God.
