Modern farming practices.Why do we spray the crops?

We spray to protect the crop from weeds and pests and to apply fertilisers. This enables the growing crop to grow to

its full yield potential.

Weeds that are growing in a crop take away moisture and nutrients therefore

starving the crop.

Pests and insects eat away at the crop lessening the plants growth potential.

Spraying of liquid fertilisers and growth promoters allows direct contact and

uptake by the crop.

Spray and kill the weeds and pests and the crop will grow to its full potential.

Crop protection in IndiaWhat is currently occurring

Many farmers in India are poor and can not afford modern spraying equipment. Most farmers in India use a knap sack sprayer. Knapsack sprayers are not accurate and are very

hard to calibrate for accurate spraying.

Knap sack sprayers are labour intensive. It could take one man a full day to spray one hectare of crop.

Because of the erratic pressure fluctuations that occur in operation the spray jet on a knapsack sprayer will not atomise the fluid uniformly . This may result in excessive runoff of expensive chemical.

When using a knapsack sprayer in a large field it is easy to miss areas in the crop because the the operator is walking up and down spraying a narrow swath. Because the knapsack sprayer is hard to calibrate chemical consumption can not be measured accurately.

Many farmers in India complain that the chemical they are using is not working. The chemical is sold in sachets designed for knapsacks. The chemical sachets are designed to be mixed with water volumes of 600 litres per hectare. At this rate of water the chemical looses it efficiency.

The Jetstream 600 litre tractor mount sprayer with 12 metre boom will spray 12 hectares per hour travelling at 10 km/h and consume 600 litres of water if calibrated to apply at 100 litres per hectare.

Traditional cultivation V’s Spraying

Traditional methods of cultivation is carried out to prepare seed beds and also done to kill weeds and pests.This requires the displacement of the earth. When the soil is disturbed moisture reserves held in the soil are lost. Stored carbon is also lost to the atmosphere. Excessive cultivation can harm the soil profile.

Spraying weeds does not disturb the soil profile and leaves locked in moisture and nutrients intact. There is much less energy (diesel fuel) required to kill weeds with a sprayer than with a plough or cultivator. Soil

carbon also remains intact. Zero till farming relies on spraying weeds to retain soil moisture.
