TRAVEL STUDY PROGRAM
GARDENJEWELS OF
IRELANDMay 1-10th, 2014
Friday, May 2 Morning: The National Botanic Gardens, Farmleigh (lunch enroute)
Afternoon: Free to shop and explore
Overnight: The Stephen’s Green Hotel (dinner on your own)
This morning you will visit The National Botanic Gardens.
Founded in 1795, much of the original architecture survives
on the Great Palm House, Orchid House and Camellia House.
A fabulous Rose Garden and Alpine Yard are a few of the many
glorious highlights of this historic landmark of Ireland.
Farmleigh a garden estate of 78 acres is situated to the Northwest
of Dublin’s Phoenix Park.
This magnificent estate was home to the Guinness family until
1999 when purchased by the Irish Government. Its great charm
is in the eclecticism of its interior décor ranging from Classical
to Jacobean, Louis XV, Louis XVI and Georgian.
Saturday, May 3 Mount Usher Gardens in County Wicklow, Robinsonian wild gardens,
Powerscourt Gardens (lunch at Powerscourt), Dillon Gardens
Overnight: Athlone Springs Hotel (dinner provided)
Travel south from Dublin to beautiful County Wicklow to tour
Mount Usher Gardens. Enjoy this famous Robinsonian wild
garden planted along the banks of the Vartry River.
From one beauty to the next — Powerscourt Gardens, one of
Ireland’s finest examples of the grand estates of the Anglo-Irish
ascendancy. Elaborate Italian garden of terraces, grand steps
and statuary, a walled garden containing the longest herbaceous
border in Ireland, a Japanese garden, lakes, fountains and so
much more!
Dillon Garden is one of the finest private gardens in Ireland. It is
a true inspiration. Almost ½ acre walled city garden containing
an impressive array of exotic plants brilliantly combined with
familiar old favorites.
Sunday, May 4Morning: Birr Castle, Rosse (lunch at Rosse)
Afternoon: Muckross House and Gardens, The Lakes of Killarney
Overnight: Lock Lein Country House—Killarney (dinner provided)
A special treat today — Birr Castle and luncheon with Lord and
Lady Rosse!
This palatial estate, set on the outskirts of the historic market
town, is the home of the Earls of Rosse. It has one of the finest
gardens in Europe and was mostly developed by Anne, Countess
of Rosse who was brought up at Nymans, the beautiful house
and garden in England. The present Lord Rosse still sponsors
plant collecting trips to distant and remote corners of the world.
The Demesne has become world famous for its exotic tree and
plant collections, rivers and lakes, formal gardens, terraces
and wildflower meadows exuding an atmosphere of intimacy
as well as grandeur. The gardens extend across 120 acres of a
17th Century Park whose sweeping open spaces are adorned
by an outstanding collection of 2,000 species of rare trees and
shrubs including the tallest box hedges in the world. The rich
array of plants including magnolias, camellias, rhododendron
and azaleas gives year round interest. A prominent feature in
the center of the Park is the Great Telescope built in 1845; the
largest in the world for over 70 years it can now be seen operating
throughout the day.
9 DAYITINERARY SUMMARY
May 1 – 10th, 2014
Thursday, May 1Arrive in Dublin, Meet & Greet and transfer to your hotel
Afternoon: Trinity College, The Book of Kells,
St. Patrick’s Cathedral
Overnight: The Stephen’s Green Hotel, Pub Dinner
Dublin’s official date of establishment was in 988 A.D.
Although evidence of its existence dates back to the second
century in which it was named Eblana. Norman Vikings
were the first settlers of the city. This afternoon you will
visit highlights of this ancient and vibrant city. St. Patrick’s
Cathedral began as a wooden church in use from the 5th
Century to about 1191. The present building, the largest
church in Ireland was built between 1191 and 1270. Major
rebuilding took place in the 1870’s.
The Book of Kells is a must see when in Dublin! It is a
stunningly beautiful manuscript containing the Four
Gospels. The origin is said to be from a monastery on the Isle
of Iona, Scotland, to honor Saint Columba in the early 8th
Century. The Book of Kells is Ireland’s most precious medieval
artifact, and is generally considered the finest surviving
illuminated manuscript.

The famous Cookery School of Ballymaloe, with its shell house
and associations with William Penn awaits you. Everyone is
invited to participate in a private cookery class concentrating on
basic bread, jam and scones. A tour of the organic garden is also
a treat. The school is the dream of Darina Allen, Ireland’s best
known chef. You may have met her on the Food Channel when
Bobby Flay interviewed her in Ireland.
Thursday, May 8 Morning: Fota Arboretum and Gardens,
Cappoquin House & Gardens
Afternoon: Lismore Castle & Gardens (lunch enroute)
Overnight: Lismore House (dinner provided)
Fota Arboretum and Gardens is located in the sheltered harbor
of Cork. Fota is of international importance, containing one of
the finest collections of rare and tender trees and shrubs grown
in Ireland and Britain. The name “Fota” is derived from the
Irish “Fód te” meaning warm soil and it is this very quality which
enables the cultivation of the exquisite collection which might
not otherwise be grown in Ireland.
Cappoquin House & Gardens: Cappoquin House is an 18th
century Georgian mansion built on the site off the old Fitzgerald
castle. It dominates the River Blackwater at the point where, due
to an ice age blockage the river turns south and ploughs its way
through the hills to the sea. Planting types are much the same as
in southwest England (Devon or Cornwall).
Lismore Castle & Gardens graciously welcome you! In the
turbulent centuries preceding the reign of King Charles II
most substantial Irish gardens were protected behind walled or
embanked enclosures adjacent to a house or castle. The Upper
Garden at Lismore is a splendid surviving example of such an
early garden — notable not only for its impressive walls, turrets
and terracing but also because it has remained in continuous
use for over three-and-a-half centuries. Its appeal is perhaps
increased by the tradition that Spenser wrote part of his
Fairie Queen here. The gardens are entered through an outer
gatehouse known as the Riding House, built in 1631 to provide
accommodation for mounted horsemen. The old Upper Garden
lies to the left of the avenue and occupies a large rectangular
area on two terraces. Its surrounding walls were built in 1626 by
Richard Boyle, the Great Earl of Cork, a remarkable Elizabethan
adventurer who had acquired the castle from Sir Walter Raleigh
in 1602. Visitors are greeted in the gardens by newly planted fruit
trees covering part of the area once occupied by the Great Earl’s
orchard. A central walk between herbaceous borders backed by
clipped yew hedges passes through the lower terrace in Lismore
Castle & Gardens and has a dramatic alignment with the
cathedral spire. This leads to the upper terrace where there are
larger areas of beautiful edible gardens.
At the North West end lies a ridge-furrow greenhouse designed
by Sir Joseph Paxton in 1858, while in the south-west corner,
providing excellent views of the surrounding landscape, a tower
looms. The principal feature of the garden is an ancient yew walk,
planted in 1707.
Friday, May 9Waterford City, Kilkenny (lunch enroute), Thomastown
Village, Dublin
Farewell Dinner: The historical Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin
Overnight: The Stephen’s Green Hotel
In famous Waterford City you’ll visit the Crystal Factory,
Cathedral and 10th century City Walls. Continue on to Kilkenny
and the lovely village of Thomastown in the heart of the
renowned Kilkenny Crafts Trail. Visit a glass blower, artisan
chocolate maker, various artist and craft studios. Kilkenny will
present you with a beautiful castle and medieval laneways.
Continue to Dublin.
Saturday, May 10Morning: Departure for Dublin Airport
After a luncheon, we will depart for Muckross House and
Gardens, renowned for their fine collection of rhododendrons
species, hybrids and azaleas. Visit the wonderful rock-garden
and extensive water-garden. Muckross Abbey will provide an
exciting experience — follow the old narrow stairways to get a
feeling of how the old monks would leave their living quarters
to make their way to prayer. The splendid 19th century
subtropical gardens run down towards the Lakes of Killarney
and the nature walks offer a fine example of beauty and serenity
of the area. They were laid out in honor of Queen Victoria who
greatly enjoyed visiting Muckross.
Monday, May 5The Ring of Kerry (lunch enroute), A day to remember
Overnight: Lock Lein Country House—Killarney (dinner provided)
The Ring of Kerry is the scenic highlight of Ireland, over 100
miles of stunning seaside with the mountains always beside you.
Possibly enjoy a horse-drawn cart ride! A day to explore and enjoy.
Tuesday, May 6Morning: Free time in Killarney, Dereen Gardens (Lunch at The Lake House)
Afternoon: Garnish Island, Bantry House & Gardens
Overnight: Seaview House Hotel (dinner provided)
Free time this morning for shopping and exploring in the
wonderful village of Killarney.
Visit Dereen Gardens with luxuriant woodlands giving glimpses
of the sea and the surrounding wild and majestic country.
Gorgeous azaleas in bloom and rhododendrons — some rising as
high as 60 feet.
Perhaps the most magical setting a garden could have is to be on
an island bathed in the warm waters of the Gulf Stream! Garnish
Island — known to horticulturists worldwide as an island garden
of rare beauty. Enjoy!
To put an end to the day, you’ll admire Bantry House & Gardens,
an early 19th century terraced Italian Garden with a “Staircase to
Heaven” and Rose Burke’s informal woodland garden with exotic
sub-tropical plants.
Wednesday, May 7Morning: Cois Cuain Gardens at Kilcrohane
Afternoon: (Luncheon at Ballymaloe House), Private cooking class at
Cookery School of Ballymaloe
Overnight: Seaview House Hotel (dinner provided)
Start your day at Cois Cuain Gardens at Kilcrohane. This garden
is entirely within 30 meters of the sea. A joy to behold!
