This was followed by a Panel discussion on. “Current State and Recent trends in Research” which was moderated by Dr. S.C Parija, Director-JIPMER. There was a though provoking session on “Design of future ecosystem” by Dr M K Bhan. Snippets of research in department were presented. Also there were around 57 research presentations by faculty, residents, PhD scholars and undergraduate students of JIPMER. Dr Adhisivam B, Mr.Katiboina Srinivasa Rao, Dr Ram D and Dr Manavalan M were awarded best research paper in the faculty, PhD, MD/MS resident and GJSTRAUS categories respectively. The Research Day celebrations continued to the second day

with workshop on ‘Critical Thinking in Medical Research’. There was a panel discussion with Dr. M.K Bhan, Dr. J.P Muliyil, CMC, Vellore and Dr. Uma Chandra Mouli Natchu, THSTI-Faridabad being the panellist. They discussed on origin of research questions and hypothesis, quantitative skills for clinical research and nurturing clinical researchers, global best practices respectively. This was followed by session on “Setting priorities and building teams and Infrastructure” which was moderated by Dr. D Prabhakaran from CCDC, PHFI, New Delhi. Dr Shinjini Bhatnagar, THSTI – Faridabad, Dr. Dwaipayan Bharadwaj, JNU, New Delhi were other panellists

JIPMER Health Education Initiative

Under the leadership of Professor Dr. SC Parija, Director, JIPMER, a new initiative had been started in May to

improve public awareness on health and disease which would include a series of interactive programs conducted on a fortnightly basis. These programs will focus on building knowledge among the general public as well as patients and their care-givers on prevention and treatment of common illnesses. The programs will be in Tamil and are planned for every 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month between 3.30 and 5.00PM.

The 8th interactive session focusing on Eye and Organ Donation titled ‘Myths and Realities – Eye and Organ Donation’. The program focused on building knowledge and clear doubts among the general public on the need, importance

and concerns regarding organ donation with special emphasis on eye donation. The programme also gave an overview of the process of organ pledging in JIPMER

The 9th interactive session focusing on “Hyothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism” was organised on 22nd September 2015. The programme focussed on educating the people about the problems and treatment available for Thyroid Hormonal disorders

The 10th Interactive session focusing on “Safe Food for Healthy Living’ was conducted on Tuesday, 13th October 2015. The programme focused on educating people on three major domains, food hygiene, buying and eating safe food and common food adulterants

JIPMER Honours the Legacy of its Legendary Teachers

Department of Medical Education, JIPMER celebrated ‘Teacher’s day’ by honouring its legendary teachers who served JIPMER and have contributed towards making it one among the top ranking medical education institutes in India.

Seven former teachers – Dr L.J. Chandrasekar, Professor of Anaesthesiology, Dr S. Sankaran, Professor of Medicine, Dr P. Nalini, Professor of Pediatrics, Dr Prema Sivasankaran, Professor of Pathology, Dr N. Ananthkrishnan, Professor of Surgery and Dr Reddy Rani, Professor of Obstetrics and Dr K S Reddy, Professor of Radiotherapy were felicitated on the occasion.

JIPMER to offer Telemedicine services to Sabarimala pilgrims

JIPMER in association with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has initiated specialised treatments to Sabarimala pilgrims through satellite-based

telemedicine link from September 25.The Ministry of Health and Family welfare (MHFW),

has recognised JIPMER as a centre for telemedicine and has provided `1.16 crore to set up the facility by developing necessary infrastructure.

Dr Ravi Chittoria officer in Charge of Telemedicine Unit is the Nodal officer for the project.

A team led by Dr S C Parija, Director JIPMER visited Sabarimala to inspect the facilities, also a designated area has been allotted in the EMS ward for the telemedicine services.

Spandan 2015

Spandan, the annual inter

collegiate fest organized by JIPMER Students association was conducted from 30th August to 5th September 2015. this year around 35 colleges participated in the event. The event kicked off with a marathon Endurance 3.0. This was followed by a friendly basketball match between teams from JIPMER and Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences. The event was formally inaugurated by Dr S C Parija, Director, JIPMER.

In addition to the regular sports, cultural and literary events; major Proshows this year were live concerts by Benny Dayal, Girish And The Chronicles, Balabhaskar and Lagori along with Dernier Cri Fashion Show and Sunburn Campus.

JIPMER Students Promote Voluntary Blood Donation

MBBS students organised a

flash mob at beach road to catch the attention to blood donation. Around 50 students from 1st & 2nd year MBBS took part in the event which was organised on 31st October 2015 under guidance of faculty from Department of Transfusion Medicine. They also performed a small skit and enacted hospital scenarios to drive home the importance of voluntary blood donation

JIPMER Students Produce a Science Fiction Movie

A team of more than 100 students spanning across 4 batches of MBBS working for more than three years produced their first science

fiction movie titled ‘Nemesys: A Tale of Vengeance’. The movie is a part of triology, second part of which is due to release in January 2016.

The movie has been produced with a shoe string budget, with the team innovating and spending only when it is absolutely essential

The team has been inspired by former President A.P.J Abdul Kalam whose message was ‘To Dare to Dream’

Dr Ramesh Kumar R Assistant Professor Pediatric Critical Care Unit awarded the “Major General Amir Chand Gold Medal” for best research award entitled “Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Cerebral Perfusion Pressure–Targeted Therapy Versus Intracranial Pressure–Targeted Therapy for Raised Intracranial Pressure due to Acute CNS Infections in Children” and received from Shri Narendra Modi, Hon'ble Prime Minister of India on 11th Sept 2015 at 34th Convocation held at PGIMER, Chandigarh.

Dr S. Velkumary, Associate Professor, Physiology, received Dr. Arttatran Nanda Memorial Award of ASSOPI for the best research work in Respiratory Physiology for the year 2015, for her paper titled “Correlations of Diaphragm Thickness and Body Surface Area on Pulmonary Functions in Healthy Adults” at the inaugural ceremony of ASSOPICON-2015 organized by Shri Ram Murti Smarak institute of medical sciences (SRMS IMS), Bareilly UP, held from 26 to 29 October 2015.

Ms. Piriyatharisini.T Ph.D Scholar Department of Microbiology (Parasitology Section) has been awarded the best oral presentation at TROPACON – 2015, 9TH National congress of The Indian Academy of Tropical Parasitology, on 24th to 27 September 2015 organized by Madurai Medical College, Madurai.

The title of the Oral Presentation was “Identifying Specific Immuno-reactive Protein of Cysticercus cellulosae by 2-D Electrophoresis”

Dr Shashi Ahuja, Associate Professor, Dept. of Ophthalmology, received "Shyam Lal Saksena Memorial Award" by National Academy of Medical Sciences, New-Delhi,for the paper entitled "Retinal nerve fibre layer thickness analysis in cases of papilledema using optical coherence tomography-A case-control study".The award was conferred at AIIMS,Patna on 18 October 2015

Dr Avin Muthuramalingam, final year junior resident, Psychiatry,won the Dr D.S Raju Memorial PG Award for best original postgraduate paper at the 48th annual conference of the Indian Psychiatric Society-South Zone (IPOSCON 2015) held at Nellore from October 16-18th, 2015.

Dr. Devi R. Nithiya, Junior Resident,Physiology, was awarded JIPMER GOLDEN ASSOPICON Award of the Association of Physiologists of India for the year 2015, for the best postgraduate research work in Physiology for her MD thesis work on the ‘Effects of yoga therapy in breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy’, in the National conference (ASSOPICON) 2015, held from 27th to 29th October at Bareilly, UP.

Dr. Vasanthan T, DM Neonatology fellow, won the prize for his poster titled Effect of therapeutic hypothermia on renal function parameters in term neonates with perinatal asphyxia at South Neocon 2015, Chennai (October 2 – 4, 2015). 3. Best thesis award from Indian Journal of Pediatrics (IJP)

Dr. Subhash Chettri, Pediatrics was awarded the best PG thesis for the year 2015-titled Endotracheal suctioning in non- vigorous neonates born through meconium stained amniotic fluid: a Randomized controlled trial at IJP Grand rounds and oration program at New Delhi ( September 13, 2015)

Dr. Shreya Sharma, Pediatrics was awarded the Best Poster award in Experimental Nutrition category for the poster on"Role of Oral Cholecalciferol as an adjuvant therapy in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Randomizd Controlled Trial" in the 47th Annual National Conference of the Nutrition Society of India at the National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad on 9th October, 2015 .

Dr Jayesh Mittal, Senior Resident, Urology won the ‘Sri Vedanayagam Prize in Uro- Oncology’ for the paper ‘Partial

Nephrectomy for Renal Masses: a reappraisal.’ In the 20th Annual Conference of the Tamilnadu & Pondicherry Association of Urologists (TAPASUCON 2015) .

Dr. Amal Fathima Sameer, UG student, received the Best Paper Award for her oral presentation on the research paper entitled ‘Prevalence of Non-functional superficial palmar arch in South Indian population’ in the 38th Annual Conference of Association of Anatomists, Tamil Nadu organized by the Department of Anatomy, PRIMS Chennai, on 10th & 11th October, 2015.

Dr.Gerard Pradeep Devnath. S, 2nd year Junior Resident of Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology has been awarded the best oral presentation at South India Medico Legal Association (SIMLA) – 2015 on 09th to 11th October 2015 organized by Goa Medical College, Goa. The Title of the Oral Presentation was “Head Injury Sustained by a Cracker Blast – A Case Report”

Dr.Yavana suriya III yr Senior Resident of Obstetrics and gynaecology awarded with most prestigious Dr.R.P.SOONAWALA award for best paper (research paper, oral presentation)for paper entitled “Maternal ascites and pregnancy outcome in women with severe pre- eclampsia- a matched cohort study”. at the AICC RCOG conference held at KOLKATA September 4th - 6th 2015.

Final year M.D. post graduate student Dr. VISHAL KUMAR CHITIKESHI from Department of Pulmonary Medicine won First prize in the South Zone level quiz competition held at TN Govt. Multisuperspeciality Hospital, Ommandurar Govt. Estate, Chennai as part of 8th Continuing Medical Education Programme for Pulmonary Medicine PG students of Southern States on September 11th 2015

Ms. Soumya Mishra III Year B.Sc. JIPMER team successfully performed correction of a rare and complex congenital disorder of heart “Anomalous Left Coronary Artery from Pulmonary Artery” with severe Mitral Regurgitation with severe left ventricular dysfunction in a 3 year old child.

Obesity Awareness Programme

Obesity has become a major global health challenge. Not only is obesity increasing,

but no country had also successfully decreased obesity rates in the past 30 years.

To create awareness and initiate fight against obesity “Are you obese? Know it today” campaign was conducted by department of Surgical Gastroenterology from October 26 to October 30 as part of obesity awareness week.

During the campaign, Body Mass Index (BMI) of all staffs and students in JIPMER was checked using simple BMI calculator that was distributed to all wards and sections in JIPMER

World Mental Health Day Awareness

Department of Psychiatry along with College of Nursing and Medical Social Service Wing, JIPMER organized the World Mental Health

Day Awareness Program on 9th October 2015 on the theme “Dignity in Mental Health”. Students enacted role play on the theme.

Adding new feathers: Augmentation in Academic services

JIPMER Starts Online Registration Facility for Patients

JIPMER initiated online registration facility for the patients intending to avail medical care. The online registration portal can be accessed

from the official website of JIPMER. This facility is expected to reduce the waiting time for the patients.

New facility for Stroke and Epilepsy Patients

Department of Neurology will have a separate stroke recovery and rehabilitation

facility, this will supplement the existing active emergency, 24 hour stroke helpline and stroke follow up clinic. Similarly a dedicated epilepsy ward has been established to complement already existing epilepsy care facilities.

Department of Medical Education Conducts Training Programmes

Department of Medical Education which is a MCI’s Regional Centre for Faculty development programmes conducted 73rd National Teachers Training Course from 21st September onwards. Twenty five participants from all over the country attended

the course. Till now NTTC programme has trained more than 1500 teachers in different modalities of teaching and learning. It also organised a ‘One Day Sensitization Programme on Attitude and Communication Module (ATCOM)’ on 13th October 2015 and a three days ‘Revised MCI Basic Course Workshop’ from 14th to 16th October 2015. A total of 45 faculty members who are the Coordinators and Co-coordinators of Medical Education Units and Institute Curriculum Committee members from seventeen medical colleges from Puducherry and Tamilnadu which are under JIPMER Regional Centre attended these courses.

Breast Cancer UpdateThe department of Surgical Oncology conducted a CME on Breast Cancer Update on 31st Oct 2015 in collaboration with Regional Cancer Centre and the Department of General Surgery. The CME program was attended by national experts in the field of breast cancer management.

TAPASUCON 2015, jointly organized by the Department of Urology and Renal Transplantation, JIPMER and the

Pondicherry Renal Sciences Society was organised on 26th & 27th September 2015. Meeting was attended by 150 delegates.

Introductory Course on Primary Immunodeficiency Disorders

The departments of Clinical Immunology and Medicine, JIPMER, Puducherry conducted the 4th

Introductory Course on Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases on 18th October, 2015. The target group for the course included practicing physicians, pediatricians, pulmonary medicine specialists, allergists, Hematologists, Gastroenterologists, Rheumatologists, Dermatologists and MD and DM residents.

Hands on Workshop on Energy Devices in Liver Resection

Department of Surgical Gastroenterology conducted a Hands on Workshop on use of

Energy Devices in Liver Surgery on 12th September 2015.

12th National Workshop on PharmacogenomicsDepartment of Pharmacology conducted the 12th National Workshop on Molecular Techniques and Bioinformatics. The workshop was conducted from 21st to 23rd September 2015, 37 delegates from all over the country participated in it.

Dr Vishnu Bhat, Professor and HOD, Neonatology, participated as faculty in South Neocon 2015, Chennai and delivered a lecture on Recent concepts in management of neonatal convulsions.

Dr. Ravi Kumar Chittoria, Chaired Scientific Session in ‘BREAST CANCER UPDATE-2015’on 31st Oct 2015 at SSB Conference Hall, JIPMER. Chaired the Scientific Session in CME Programme on “Obesity and Metabolic Surgery” on 27th Oct 2015, Organized by Dept. of Surgical Gastroenterology at JIPMER.

Dr. G. K. Pal, Professor, Physiology, as Symposium Leader organized the symposium on “Publication of research papers in PubMed indexed journals” and delivered the symposium key note address on the topic “Addressing Reviewers’ comments and Revision of Manuscript” in the second annual conference of Association of Physiologists of India (ASSOPICON – 2015), conducted at Sri Ram Murti Smarak Institute of Medical Sciences (SRMS), Bareilly, U.P., held from 26th to 29th October 2015.

Dr. Debdatta Basu, Professor of Pathology along with Dr. K. Arun Kumar, Senior Resident and Dr. Prasad Dange, Senior Resident, were invited faculty at the Pre-conference Hematology CME and Workshop on Bone marrow biopsy interpretation held at MKCG Medical College, Brahmapur, Odisha. They conducted a workshop on Bone marrow trephine biopsy. Dr. Debdatta Basu delivered two guest lectures entitled “Myeloproliferative neoplasms and “Plasma cell dyscrasia”, while Dr. K. Arun Kumar and Dr. Prasad Dange spoke on “Non-hematological malignancies” and “PUO and HIV” respectively Debdatta Basu was an invited speaker at Sri Manakula Vinayagar South Indian Physician Conference (SMVSIPCON 2015), held at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College, Puducherry held on 31st October and 1st November 2015. He spoke on “Approach to pancytopenia”.

Dr. Debdatta Basu, Professor of Pathology delivered a talk on “Multiple Myeloma – diagnostic issues: Then and now” at the 56th Annual Conference of Indian Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, held at Bangalore from November 5-8, 2015.

Dr. Gowri Dorairajan, Professor, Obstetrics and Gynaecology delivered talk on “Post operative Voidying dysfunction” at AICC RCOG 2015 Conference held at Calcutta from 5th to 7th September 2015.

Dr. Rakhee Kar chaired and judged a free paper session at the 56th Annual Conference of Indian Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, held at Bangalore from November 5-8, 2015.

Dr. V. Parthasarthy, Additional Professor, Department of Radiotherapy, delivered a talk as an invited faculty during the XIIIth Annual TMH radiotherapy Practicum Teaching Course / Workshop

on Brachytherapy for Head and Neck at TMH, Mumbai.

Dr. Sunil Kumar Saxena, Professor and Head delivered guest lecture on “Invasive fungal sinusitis in immunocompromised patients at IAOHNS 2015 2nd Annual Conference of Indian Academy of Oto-rhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery at, PGIMER, Chandigarh on 29th October 2015.

Dr. S. Velkumary, Associate Professor, Physiology presented a paper titled "To study the Association of baroreceptor sensitivity with IL-17 in Psoriasis Vulgaris" in the 9th annual conference of Association of Physiologists of Tamilnadu, conducted by dept of Physiology at Meenakshi Medical College Hospital & Research Institute, Kanchipuram on 26th & 27th Sep 2015.

Dr. Y. Dhanalakshmi, Assistant Professor ,Physiology presented a paper on 'Assessment of BRS in patients with fibroid uterus' in the 9th Annual Conference of the association of Physiologists of Tamil Nadu held on 26th September 2015 at Meenakshi Medical College and Research Institute, Enathur, Kancheepuram and gave a talk on ‘VEP’ and ‘BAER’ in a Symposium on ‘Scope of Electro diagnostic research in Physiology’ on 29th October at “ASSOPICON 2015”.

Dr. Basanta Manjari Naik, Assistant Professor, Physiology chaired a poster presentation session in the 9th Annual Conference of the Association of Physiologists of Tamil Nadu held on 26th September 2015 at Meenakshi Medical College and Research Institute, Enathur, Kancheepuram and presented a talk on ‘Evoked Potential & EMG’ in a Symposium on ‘Scope of Electro diagnostic research in Physiology’ on 29th October at “ASSOPICON 2015”.

Dr. Adhisivam, Associate professor, Neonatology presented a research paper titled “Postnatal counseling on exclusive breastfeeding using video – experience from a tertiary care teaching hospital, south India” at the 3rd International Congress European Milk Bank Association (EMBA) - Lyon, France, 8th & 9th October 2015.

Dr Ramesh Kumar R, Assistant Professor , Pediatric Critical Care Unit attended the 2nd National Pediatric Critical Care CME & Dr Mehta’s Endowment Oration on 18th Oct 2015, Chennai as Invited Faculty and delivered lecture on “Invasive Intracranial Pressure Monitoring”.
