Uncertainty = Stress Getting into the job market is uncertain and is

completely different from the academic environment.

You cant control what potential employers or recruiters will do, but you can control how you will navigate through the job seeking process.

Today we will discuss what you can control, and give advice on how to control it.

Context:

Page 5: Job hunting – a full time job

Recruitment agencies service employers – get the

best fit for the vacancy. Recruitment agencies often pay fines if a candidate

does not perform at a certain level within a certain time (show measurable progress in reasonable time).

Spending time on work seekers is actually a loss for the recruitment company – they make money from the employer, not the employee.

Recruitment agents are often more interested in your behaviour than your intentions.

Not just an interview – we look for: Before an interview

First impression of your application email. First impression of your CV. First phone call – what we hear and don’t hear. Application forms – how when and how neat we

receive them. (Are the filled in completely?) Availability to attend interviews.

Selection:

On the day of the interview:

Are you on time? How do you interact with the reception staff? How did you park your car? Who came with you to the interview? Did you actually bring a CV to the interview.

Application CV and interview CV. How did you dress for the interview – first

physical impression.

During the interview…..

Two ears one mouth principle, listening enables you to respond purposefully.

Be interested – don’t try to be interesting. Show interest and not only in how the position

will benefit you, but where you can add value. If you don’t – you don’t know – don’t try and

deceive or wing it…. Don’t confuse confidence with arrogance.

Be on time – 7 minutes before the interview. Interact respectfully with the reception staff –

their opinions often count a lot. Make sure your car is clean and in neat

condition. Assure you are neatly groomed and smell

nice: Woman react to smell, men to vision.

Did you check all the spelling on your CV? If you quote someone on your CV, know who

they are.

Bring a parent with you to the interview. Phone the agency every day to receive

feedback. Not arrive for an interview with the

agency….we remember. Discuss the salary with the recruiters client –

you don't have an offer yet. Try to interview the interviewer. Smell of smoke/ bad breath. You can easily talk yourself out a position.
