For ex-offenders and felons getting jobs in today's

economy is very hard. I no! beca"se I !or !ith

some everyday. I !ish there !ere some magic tric

each one of them co"ld learn that !o"ld easily allo!

them to find jobs# b"t "nfort"nately there is not. I meet

ex-felons that feel they are excl"ded from society

beca"se they are ro"tinely singled o"t for things that are in their $asts. %s

hard as they try to $"t the $ast behind them# the stigma of having a criminal

record ee$s them from getting jobs.

I tell all of my st"dents not to ex$ect anyone to feel sorry for them and not to

loo for any favors. More than liely# there !ill be no favors and very little

forgiveness. &his story is not all doom and gloom. &he fact is# there are ex-

offenders and felons hired everyday. &here are em$loyers !ho !ill give

them a chance. &he challenge is finding the em$loyers. aving a criminal

record !ill $"t them at a disadvantage !hen it comes to getting hired. &his

does not mae the sit"ation im$ossible# j"st more

of a challenge. &he only !ay to overcome this

diffic"lt sit"ation is to be smarter and be

committed to !oring harder. %re yo" !illing to

do !hat it taes to get a job( %re yo" !illing to

$"t the !or in( It !ill tae a !hole lot more that

filling o"t a fe! a$$lications and s$ending the rest

of the time hanging o"t !aiting for the $hone to

ring. &hat sim$ly is not going to be eno"gh. )o" m"st be $re$ared for forty

ho"rs $er !ee# !oring on yo"r res"me and intervie! sills# finding job

leads# maing contacts and filling o"t a$$lications. &here are jobs for felons

em$loyment agencies are more liely to hire

felons# than the larger nationally no!n ones.

0ften the large agencies have limitations that

excl"de those !ith criminal records.

Inde$endently o!ned agencies are free to em$loy

anyone they !ant to# so an individ"al !ith a

criminal record !ill stand a better chance at getting hired by a$$lying to

them.

&he shoes sho"ld be leather and shined. Boots or sneaers are notacce$table2 &he hair sho"ld be neatly c"t and the face sho"ld be cleanly

shaven. If a beard is !orn# it sho"ld be neatly trimmed. o not forget to trim
