taught Computer at JI and
before that taught in New
York.
The end of June we
welcomed Father Todd
Petersen as our new priest
for our area faith
community.
We are also hiring new PE
and Technology Teachers. What’s new? LOTS! First
of all, I have moved from
sixth grade teacher to
principal. That is a big
change that I am very
excited about. For those
who may not know, I
attended JI as a child
from Kindergarten (first
ever Kindergarten class
at JI) through sixth
grade. I went to St.
Peter High School and
the College of St.
Benedict. I will graduate
with my Masters of
Educational Leadership
in June 2014. I taught
fifth and sixth grades at
JI for seventeen years.
Now here I am in my first
year as principal and
thrilled about the new
challenges and
adventures!
Mr. Karl Reuter has
moved to sixth grade,
and we have hired Mrs.
Sharon Grygo as the fifth
grade teacher. She previ-

Everything I Need to Know...
After the tornado in 1998, when we were
transitioning from the old school to the
new school, Jackie Johnson created this
special keepsake, shown to the right, for
the staff and many others. Hopefully, many
of you have this on a key chain or special
place.
The Ten Commandments are
the core of how we should
live as Christians.
Jackie Johnson, the
daughter of Vickie Johnson
and the late Paul Johnson, died
suddenly in St. Peter the end
of June. Jackie was the mother
of Erin and Amanda McCabe.
Jackie was a STRONG
supporter of John Ireland. She
volunteered in the lunch room,
donated money and items, and
always spread the good word
about the school to all she met.
She was creative, outgoing and
lovable. She is sadly missed by
many. Please continue to
keep her family in your
thoughts and prayers.
Thank you to the family for
referring memorials to JI. Thank
you to the many generous
donations in Jackie’s memory!

Our fifth and sixth graders have participated in the Adopt-a-Grandparent
Program with the local nursing home for seventeen years. This is a great
service project for our community.
The students participate in the Accelerated Reading Program which allows
them to read at their own reading level and provides the opportunity to check
comprehension and vocabulary.
All classrooms (K-6) have Starboards (interactive whiteboards) thanks to
generous donations from those in our parish and school community.
John Ireland Student Council is a wonderful group led by Cindy Lynch, the
third grade teacher. They plan and organized many service projects
throughout the school year. Students learn about those in need and then put
that knowledge into action by raising money and praying for them.
All teachers are licensed and continue to grow in their faith and professional
development to better meet the needs of our students.
We have two Nooks for classroom use and are looking at having a set of them
for small group literature circles.
The next phase of our technology plan is to purchase iPads for classroom use.
This will help meet the diverse needs of the students from those who struggle
to those who excel and everyone in between!
We continue to learn more about the ever changing resources and best
practices in education in order to provide the best education in a Christian
environment.
Did You Know…?
Words from JI Students:
There is so much sadness and injustice in our world, why not share
the fact that God is everywhere and in everyone no matter what is
going on. He will not abandon us and He will always forgive us.
What knowledge is more important than that?
The knowledge gained was not just math, reading, social studies,
science, spelling, and language, but also religion which focused on
gospel values and morals as well as service. Religion is the core of
life long learning and living with others in peace and with justice.
