After never reaching the playoffs be-fore, Head Coach Israel Stephenshelped guide the Indians to back-to-backpostseason appearances in 2011 and 2012.

In 2013, the Indians were under the di-rection of a new coach while Stephens was

at another school. He hopes that by return-ing to his alma mater he can once again leadthem into playoff contention, even after a1-16-3 season a year ago.

There are not a lot of returning playersfor the Indians this season, but there are re-turners at key positions.

Gabriel Favela, a four-year player for theIndians, returns at forward and AlejandroMendoza returns at keeper. Defender ErickGarcia is the only other returning starter, giving the Indians a leader with experienceat three of four positions.

Other players that will be expected tostep up are defender Juan Garcia, midelderCarlos Padilla and midelder Nestor Al-varado.

While Stephens notes tness and workrate as team strengths, the team has a long

way to go to get to where it was a coupleyears ago.

In order for us to compete for a play-off spot we have to improve defensively,he said. And we have to nd ways to getgoals.

The Indians nd themselves in a tough-er district than they did during their run of

playoff appearances with the additions ofStephenville and Kennedale.

Playing in this district helps prepare youfor the speed of play and the overall pacewell see in the playoffs, Stephens said.

This is the last year Alvarado will be ina district with the likes of Cleburne, Joshuaand Granbury, but Stephens does not believethings will be easier just because of a newclassication.

Our goals will remain the same toimprove and compete for district and statechampionships, he said. We have to be

good regardless of size. Weve been verycompetitive in 4A in the past and well haveto get to that level again to compete at thelevel we want, regardless of classication.

    Tommy Brown

After a string of four consecu-tive playoff appearances, theLady Indian soccer team took a stepback last year when it was put in adistrict that included perennial playoffcontenders such as Cleburne, Joshua,Granbury, Stephenville and Kenne-dale.

The Lady Indians went 6-16 andmissed the playoffs in the tougherdistrict, but Coach Ryan ODonnellis hoping for a fresh start but withseveral of the same faces.

Only three graduated off of lastyears team, two of which moved onto play college soccer.

In order for us to compete for aplayoff spot we have to have goodteam chemistry, ODonnell said. The girls have to be willing to workhard for it all year. I believe that weare capable of doing well, it will justtake a few wins and the girls believingin themselves.

Of the returning starters, Ira Guard-ian, Keely Crowder, Luisa Quintanaand Raigan Hester will be relied on toprovide leadership. Crowder and Hes-ter have played on the varsity for their

entire high school careers.Newcomers for the Lady Indi-

ans will include Sydney Summersand Jessica Cornejo. Summers has achance to be a playmaker as a fresh-man after scoring all four goals in ascrimmage win over Dallas Spruce.Cornejo will be most valuable to theLady Indians mideld with her ballcontrol skills, but ODonnell believesshe has the ability to develop into aforward as well.

This will be the last year Alvaradoplays in a district with the likes of Cle-burne, Joshua and Granbury as begin-ning in 2015 there will be three clas-

sications for soccer instead of two.I wish we could play in a more

even district as far as the number of3A teams but this will only prepare usfor when we do play in a 3A districtnext year, ODonnell said. With thatbeing said, I believe we will continueto improve on our win total this sea-son and I do think we could surprisea couple teams by the time districtcomes along.

    Elks working toward turnaround season

Perhaps no program wasmore negatively affectedby the berth of Centennial HighSchool than the Burleson boyssoccer team. But the Elks hopeto follow in the footsteps of theBurleson High football team.

Last year on the gridiron, theElks went winless, strugglingsimply to be competitive, butquickly turned things around tomake the postseason this year.

Last season for the Elks soc-cer team was also a struggle, asthey went 0-14 in district playwith a young and inexperiencedteam that was left bare after theBISD split. Meanwhile, acrosstown, the Spartans were chock

full of talent and experienced adistrict title.

Coach Jeff Cross said theElks only had one player withvarsity experience who was onthe team during district play lastyear. This year, the Elks returnnine varsity players, includingsix starters Trevor Anderson,

David Carrizal, Ad Desai, TylerErickson, Austin Linehan andZach Payne.

The strength should be inour defense, Cross said. Al-though our goal keepers willbe rookies. Carrizal is the onlythree-year letterman, one of ourcaptains and he will be the lead-er of our defense.

Cross added that Ericksonand Dasai are fellow captainsalong with Carrizal, and thatErickson will be solid alongsideCarrizal in the back while Dasaiwill solidify the Elks middle.

Our team is still young andrebuilding from the past twoyears, but I think we will start

closing the gap and should havesome success in our tough dis-trict this year, Cross said. Asalways, one of our team goalsis to make the playoffs, and Ithink we will have a chance thisyear.

The Burleson Lady Elks return several key contributors from lastyears team, and they will look to make a run at the District 16-4A title under a new coach.

Charles Nobles, who was previously the assistant soccer coach atMidlothian the past three years, takes over the Lady Elk soccer pro-gram.

Burleson returns 10 varsity players from a season ago, highlight-ed by the teams four captains Olivia Clark, Hayden Strube, JessieClark and Paighton McNeely.

Nobles also said sophomore Mariah Escalante will play an impor-tant role after starting for the Lady Elks as a freshman in 2013.

The biggest key for success in 2014 for the Lady Elks is working asone cohesive unit, Nobles said.

Im a big believer in what I call the total futbol concept, or totalsoccer concept, he said. Thats basically where the entire team at-

tacks together and defends together. The idea for us is to keep the balland penetrate from there, and then when we lose it, were going to pres-sure defensively as a unit together.

The biggest key that we have is that we play as a team. Were ateam rst and that everything we do, we do as a team. The second bigkey is for our team to keep possession of the ball and capitalize on scor-ing chances to be successful. Third thing is to have a leave everythingon the eld type of attitude.

Burleson came in fourth place in district last year and lost to Joshuain extra time in the bidistrict round of Class 4A playoffs. Nobles saidthe Lady Elks aspirations for this season are to be No. 1.

Our goal is to go all the way to the state tournament and win thestate tournament, he said. As a team, we believe that if we put in thework, well have the opportunity to be successful, win district, win inthe playoffs and go from there.

It has been a long offseasonfor the Burleson Centen-nial Lady Spartans and CoachKara Cuellar.

The Lady Spartans rolledthrough District 16-4A play asdistrict champions last season, but saw their season end muchearlier than they had hopedwhen they were upset by Cle-

burne in the rst round of thepostseason.Last year, the early exit in

the playoffs left a sour taste inour mouths, Cuellar said. Iknow they denitely want togo a lot deeper in the playoffsthan what we did last year, andI know the seniors want to de-fend their district title. Im hop-ing with all the seniors we have, that well have a solid leader-ship foundation.

The Lady Spartans returnan astonishing 17 players 11of those seniors this season from last years varsity teamas they only graduated threeseniors in 2013. Among thosereturning players are all-districtand all-county performers Ko-ryann Clark, Ashley Ledford,Taylor Mauppin, Hanna Mattin-son and Enniti Stephens.

Im denitely expecting an-other great year from Koryann

Clark, Ashley Ledford, Tay-lor Mauppin and a lot of thesegirls, Cuellar said. Im reallyexpecting a lot from them.

Cuellar said that three fresh-men made the varsity squad tostart the season, and said morecould possibly move up from atalented JV team.

I think one of the keys isteam chemistry, Cuellar said.Thats important. Last year, our team chemistry was bet-

ter than the year before. Also, Ithink game shape is important. Not being in game shape hurt uslast year. We werent in the bestshape and you could tell whenwed get tired, and wed hit abrick wall. And that was whenmistakes would happen. To besuccessful, we need to have ourbest players out there with goodteam chemistry and we need tobe in game shape.

With so much returning tal-ent, including seasoned andprove players like Clark andStephens, among others, Cuel-lar said the Lady Spartans aimis high in 2014.

I want us to defend the dis-trict title, obviously, she said.Theres no reason why weshouldnt be able to. We basi-cally have the same team, butweve gained a couple of more

players that are going to add tothis. I want us to go farther inthe playoffs. I really want to getinto the third and fourth roundsat least. I really think we havethe talent to get there, its justgoing to depend on if the girlswant it and if the chemistry isthere and if we stay injuryfree. I think we can do it.

The Burleson Centenni-al Spartans are comingoff the young programs bestseason in its early history af-ter winning the District 16-4A title and advancing fourrounds into the postseason.

    But Centennial is also

having to deal with losing itsrst-ever graduating class a class that included severalkey players.

Chris Johnson and B.J.Rodrick were each all-districtand all-county superlativeperformers for the Spartansa year ago, and both are alsoplaying college ball. Replac-ing those two players pro-duction is a key for the sea-son, Coach Chance Rose said.

Were in a unique situ-ation where we had our rstgraduating class, Rose said. This is the rst time guyshave to step up and ll in.But weve got a lot of good, quality players who can stepup and do it.

Johnson was one of thestates leading goal scorers aseason ago, but Rose said thisyear, the Spartans will have

to attack more as a team thanletting a single player createoffense.

Its going to have to bemore of a collective team ef-fort, Rose said. A lot of thetime last year, it was easy to

let Chris be Chris. Its just amatter of these guys showingup in situations and I thinkthey can. I think well step upand do ne.

I dont know what wellhave one guy who scores 32goals again, but we shouldhave a couple of guys with20.

Another key aspect of theseason is at the goal keeper

position, where last year, theSpartans had two quality goalkeepers in Ron Reid and Ma-son Stringer, who were su-perlative performers as well.Stringer graduated and Reidis focusing on football in

hopes of signing with a col-lege.

We got a young guy Ja-cob Green, Rose said. Hesbeen on the JV last two yearsand has really developedwell. I have full condencehe can step in and do a great

    job.Despite losing several key

pieces from last years squad,Rose does return a few con-

tributors from a season ago.Walker Stewart started

    every game for Centennial

as a freshman last year, andRose said he will be the an-chor on defense this season.Cord Martinez is expectedto ll in at Johnsons posi-tion and Blake Beckrich isanother key returner. GabrielHernandez, who was Centen-nials second-leading scorerbehind Johnson last year, alsoreturns.

I feel like we have a lotof depth overall, Rose said.

Theres more of a team mo-rale this year, not that therewasnt last year, but theres adifferent vibe to the team.

Theres nobody thatstands out and everyone playsfor each other. It is a team at-mosphere here, and I thinkthats going to help us go along way. We lost to Stephen-ville last year. They didnthave the better talent, butthey played better as a teamand thats what paid off forthem in the end. I think thatsgoing to be the key for us isplaying for each other andunderstanding it takes all 11guys and not just one.

Rose said the Spartansgoal is to defend last yearsdistrict title and play deepinto the postseason.

For the third consecutiveyear, the Cleburne Yel-low Jackets will be led by a newhead coach.

For 2014, William Walkerwill lead the Jackets into battle, and he said with the talent anddepth Cleburne has, he has highexpectations for the season.

With the group thats com-ing up, with the juniors we have

and the senior leadership, wehave high expectations, Walkersaid. Our goal is to get one ofthose top couple spots so we canplay a lower seed, so it gives usa better chance of advancing.

    In 2013, the Jackets nished

in fourth place in District 15-4Aand lost to Burleson Centennialin the bidistrict round of Class4A playoffs.

Its tough to say because Iobviously have limited knowl-edge of some of the teams in ourdistrict, Walker said. I did seeGranbury and Stephenville playin the state tournament, and Iknow Cleburne was competitivewith those teams last year.

Walker said being smart andpatient on defense, then switch-ing to aggressive on offense ishow he likes his teams to play.

I like to attack, but we re-

ally stress getting back and get-ting ball side when the otherteam has possession, he said.Being smart and patient on de-fense to try to slow down theirattack, and then when we slowthem down and hopefully create

turnovers, we attack quickly.Mario Juarez, Ronald Ca-

bello, Joseph Paez, Aaron Webband Zach Long are several play-ers who Walker said would playintegral roles into the successthis year.

I really think that weve gota lot of depth overall, Walkersaid. I believe our strengthis going to be in our mideld.

Ive got a lot of ball handlersand weve got some speed. Butoverall, its the depth. I thinkIll be able to roll people in offthe bench and not miss a beatbecause theres so many guyswho are like clones of each oth-er who I can bring in and out.

How well Long, who was afreshman last year and was thedistrict and county newcomerof the year, and Webb work to-gether is an important aspect of

the Jackets, Walker said. Those are my two center

backs, he said. Aaron is ajunior who was on varsity lastyear as a sophomore, but he isbeing moved to defense for therst time, and how well theywork together will be key forus.

Taking over at goal keeperthis season for the Jackets will

be Juarez, who Walker said isone of his more talented play-ers.

I have pretty high expec-tations for him, Walker said.Hes actually a really good ballhandler. He could be playingin mideld. Hes just a good, athletic, smart kid. Im not wor-ried about my keeper situationat all.

The Cleburne Lady Jack-ets, who had a successfulseason in 2013, begin a new eraunder Coach Aaron Gentry thisseason.

The Lady Jackets shockedthe District 16-4A district cham-pion, Burleson Centennial, inthe bidistrict round of playoffslast season. Cleburne then de-feated Fort Worth Carter-Riv-erside in area before falling toFort Worth Arlington Heights inthe sectional round.

If the Lady Jackets are torepeat last years success, theywill do so with several newfaces after losing key playersto graduation from last yearsteam.

We graduated a lot of play-ers last year seven starters,Gentry said. One of the keysis going to be for our seniors totake a strong leadership role thatthey may not have had to take

in the past. And we need our un-derclassmen to step up and llthe roles that have been vacatedby the graduating class last year. Its going to be hard because lastyears seniors were a pretty tal-ented group, but were going todo our best to ll those spots.

Despite losing key playerslike Taylor Bicknell and Am-ber Ward from last years team,Gentry said there is still plentyof talent on the roster.

I expect us to be competi-tive and to walk on the eld andbe able to compete with any-one, he said. I expect BrandyVillasana to have a solid year. She is learning how to be a bet-ter and more vocal leader. If shecontinues to progress, I thinkshe can be very successful.

Raygan Odell is also tran-sitioning into a strong leader, learning how to lead vocally andbeing positive. Shes very com-

petitive, and thats going to helpour team a lot with that competi-tive edge.

Charity Gonzales was theall-county offensive player ofthe year as a sophomore in 2012as she led the Lady Jackets ingoals, and Gentry said wherever

she plays on the eld, she willprovide a big impact.

Charity is one of those play-ers I can plug in anywhere, hesaid. Whatever role she hasfor us is going to be important.Whether its scoring goals ordefending other goal scorers, either way, shes going to playa big role.

Brianna Reband brings anathletic nature that is very im-portant. If she can harness that

athletic ability, she will denite-ly help on the offensive side ofthe ball.

After advancing three roundsdeep into postseason play in2013, Gentry said taking onestep further is the goal this sea-son.

They had a very successfulyear last year and our goal is tonever go backwards, he said.We want to keep reaching for-ward. We want to perform wellenough in our difcult district tomake the playoffs and see whathappens there. We want to keepbuilding. We dont want to gobackwards and lose in the rstround or not make the playoffs.

The Joshua Lady Owls arecoming off their best sea-son in school history. In 2013,the Lady Owls claimed the Dis-trict 15-4A title and went threerounds into the postseason.

Coach Jeff Brooks will re-turn nine varsity players fromlast years district title squad, and Joshua only graduated fromplayers from a season ago.

Among those returning play-ers are Mackenzie Anderson,Hayley Rohleder, Julia Tucker,Sky Plummer, Shelby Gray andPayton Boyd. Anderson was theall-district and all-county goalkeeper of the year in 2012.

We expect everybody tolead and everybody to take re-sponsibility, Brooks said. Weexpect Mackenzie to be big for

The Joshua Owls nished in thirdplace in District 15-4A but lost in therst round to Manseld Lake Ridge in 2013.

The Owls return seven varsity playersfrom a season ago after losing four seniorsfrom last years squad.

Among those returning players areKelsey Bessent and Chad Smith, both ofwhom Coach Gary Walker said will playkey roles this year. Bessent, a senior, hasbeen on the varsity since his freshman sea-son.

Another key player for the Owls will befreshman Daniel Lopez, who Walker saidwill start at center middle.

The biggest key to success for the Owls, according to Walker, was blending togetheras a team.

Its going to be an older group, buttheres several new guys coming in,Walker said. We have to foreign exchangestudents going to play and we have someJV kids stepping up. So just blending ev-erybody together is going to be the key. Acouple weeks of tournament play will helpthat. Well see pretty quickly what we havebecause were in some tough tournaments.

If we can get through nondistrict with-out killing ourselves, well be doing good. Were probably playing one of the hardernondistrict schedules around.

Walker said the Owls will maintain asimilar style of play from last years team, but with several new pieces on the roster, itwill be a matter of time to see how they ttogether and adjust.

Walker said he expects his team to com-pete for a district title, but he said that cham-pionship goes through Granbury.

If we can keep everybody healthy, andwell be a lot deeper than last year, well bene, Walker said. Im not sure if wereas good as Granbury, but wed like to be inthe top two. Im not putting us in a leaguewith Granbury yet because Im not sure howwell adjust.

We only missed Stephenville by a pointlast year in the standings. It came down tothe end of the year, and the way the sched-ule plays out, we play Stephenville the lastgame, so that may be a game to see who getssecond or third or fourth.

Hayley Rohleder (3) is one of several key returning players forthe Lady Owls.

us. Shes been a great leader for us this year already. She does agreat job on and off the eld. Im really excited about having hercome back.

Hayley, the same kind of deal, and Julia Tucker is also return-ing. She had another great cross country season and is a fantasticleader, too. Another senior is Sky Plummer, and she had an excellentseason last year, but tore her ACL halfway through district. Shesworked hard to come back and were excited about that.

As was the case last season, Brooks said the key for the LadyOwls this year is to control what you can control.

Theres a lot in a game that you cannot control, Brooks said. Iguess our big key is just ghting really, really hard and being orga-nized defensively. Those are two things you can control. And I feltlike we did pretty well with those things last year. We just hope wecan do that and be solid in those two aspects of the game.

Its like a broken record, but if we do what were supposed toand we play really hard and play organized soccer, well be ne.

Brooks said he hopes to repeat last years success, but thats notthe focus of the team or season.

Wed love to do it again, obviously, he said. But at the sametime, we didnt focus a whole lot on that. It was never our focus lastyear as a make-or-break thing. If we improve every day out, whenwe get to the end of the year, I think were going to like where weare.

Obviously, we hope were fortunate enough to get back to theplayoffs and do well once we get there. But getting better today andbuilding each day between now and the end of the season, we cancontrol that and we hope the rest will take care of itself.
