THIS HISTORICAL SOCIETY By Dean McLeod As we all struggle through difficult economic times, we find ourselves pre-occupied with the general economic and political struggle. We find ourselves constantly bombarded with the noise of everyday living. What benefit can local history be to us, with the present so loudly with us? Do we have time or resources to support a small organization that dedicates itself to preservation of, and education about, the past of the communities in which we grew? What role does the historical society play in our busy present and the less certain future? In a very real way each of us is a creature of our past. Our present does not spring suddenly from the sky, clean and pristine. It comes to us as a consequence of our performance in response to the realities that the larger world thrusts on us, or, more often, slips to us in the middle of the night. As humans, we’re not programmed, like animals, to survive. It is the accumulated learning from the society of our families and communities that make us who we are. We best succeed in the future as we consider the events of the past. Not much is new under the heavens. Our parents struggled with the difficulties of life and took pleasures from their families and communities, as do we. Their parents faced great challenges as well. As we remind ourselves, and one another of this common past, the one defined by our communities, we gain insight and strength to live our lives. It is an enriching pursuit. We hope that you can participate with the Bay Point Historical Society to protect and purvey this knowledge of our local past. It is a disappearing asset, one worthy of the attention of all who can contribute, in whatever way. We would especially encourage you to help us increase the membership in the society. Membership is really quite inexpensive; the price of a pizza take-out once a year. If you are willing to share with us names and contact information of friends and relatives who might want to join the organization, we will be happy to contact them…or you can ask them yourself.
