Dear Abingdon Baptist family, It was later in the day last Thursday when I heard about the shooting at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C.. Today I’m still trying to find a way to understand it, I still don’t. My heart hurts when things like this happen. To me, there is something especially heinous in this shooting. Yes, there are horrible tragedies: from the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City by Timothy McVeigh, to the Columbine High School shooting to the senseless slaughter of the 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. It is indescribably incongruent in my very soul whenever I learn of the loss of any innocent life. In most of these cases, however, some poor soul whose mind and heart are confused, diseased, tortured, confused, abused…(whatever you want to call it). There is at least the chance that their choice to do one of the most inhumane things one human being can do to another is coming from a person who may not be completely equipped to make such a choice. The shooting in Charleston, S.C., however, is something very different. It is a reminder that racism is still alive and well. The thing that bothers me most is not that such a senseless crime took place in a church; it is the complete disregard of the worth of another human being simply because their skin is a different color (or, for that matter, any other reason). I suppose it would be easy to join the parade of bandwagons defending some object of blame or supporting THE solution for all social ills. I just want people to stop 'killing' each other with judgement, with words, with anger, with fear, with hate and with bullets. My prayer: God, forgive us for the times we don't allow love, Real love, Jesus Christ kind of love, to fill the space within our hearts; Between us all. See you Sunday,

From Your Pastor . . .

SUNDAY NIGHTS 7:00PM

PENCIL PROJECT Even though summer officially just started -- school begins on August 10th this year. With many elementary school children needing school supplies in Washington County, we will again be joining with other churches to provide school supplies to Ecumenical Faith in Action which will be provided to families as they pick up their monthly supply of food at the food pantry. With school starting early, we will need to have the bags ready for the food pantry by 7/17. Following is a list of items that will be included in the school bags:

2 paks of 70 - wide ruled paper (or equivalent) 2 spiral bound paper 1 composition book 1 ruler 1 pencil sharpener 1 box of 24 crayons 2 erasers 1 pencil box 2 paks of 10 - #2 pencils (or equivalent) 1 pak of 10 pens (either black or blue ink) 1 pak colored pencils (usually come in paks of 10 or 12) 2 glue sticks 1 pair Fiskars scissors

There will be boxes around the church for you to place purchased supplies in or you may make a donation with which we will purchase the needed supplies and pack the bags to be delivered to EFIA. As in the past, we appreciate your contributions to this meaningful project in our community. Friends of Audrey, WMU Mission Circle
