What is Heart Disease?

• Includes conditions affecting the heart, such as coronary heart disease (plaque build up in arteries), heart attack, congestive heart failure (heart unable pump to maintain blow flow), and congenital heart disease (defect in structure of heart and vessels at birth).

• Prevention include quitting smoking, lowering cholesterol, controlling high blood pressure, maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising.

What is a Heart Attack?• How big is your heart?

• Occurs when an artery carrying blood to the heart muscle is suddenly blocked, and the heart does not get enough oxygen.

Heart Attack Warning Signs

• Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.• Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.• Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.• Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
