Just about everywhere Dawn Celapino goes, her Cairnterrier, Jack, goes, too. And if there’s a place Celapinoneeds to go — a restaurant or shop — that doesn’t allow

dogs, she simply doesn’t go there. It’s not just when running errands or eating out, however,

that Celapino insists Jack join her. As a personal trainer andan avid lover of the great outdoors, Celapino has built herlife — and Jack’s — around activities that the two can do intandem.

“He’s my best friend and I couldn’t imagine doing myoutdoor activities without him,” she said.

When Celapino says she does all of her outdoor activitieswith Jack in tow, she’s not exaggerating. The two have gonekayaking, surfing, mountain biking, camping, running, hik-ing, swimming and paddle boarding together — to name afew (“We’re shopping together right now!” she said duringour phone interview). Celapino is of the opinion that Jackshould never have to stay home alone for any measurable

length of time — which is why she started her business,Leash Your Fitness. A fitness training program based arounda joint human-dog workout, the program offers training incardio, strength, balance and yoga — with some dog obedi-ence training thrown in, as well.

“People don’t realize what their dogs can do,” Celapinosaid. “Even now, when I tell people what I do with Jack, theysay, ‘What?!’ They don’t give their dogs the benefit of thedoubt.”

Jack even does some activities that Celapino doesn’t. Takesurfing for example — “I don’t like to surf,” she said, “buthe loves it.” Jack readily jumps on the surfboard, andCelapino pushes him in to shore on a wave, proving her pettruly enjoys his active lifestyle.

Just like humans, however, dogs don’t necessarily havethe ability to perform physically demanding activities fromthe get go. The most important thing when including pets ina workout, Celapino said, is training.

“People have to realize they have to train their pets likethey train themselves,” she said. “You can’t take your dogbiking up a mountain when it can’t walk a mile.”

The trick, she said, is to start slow. “Just try a few things at a time. And a better-behaved dog

will be able to do more of these things with you, so obedi-ence training comes in handy. And it’s not a good time toteach them how to behave when they’re in the kayak withyou.”

The stigmas about what a dog can and can’t do relative towhat we humans do are slowly fading away, Celapino said. The evidence can be seen, she said, in the travel industry.

“Airlines are changing their policies, and hotels are, too,”she said. “You and your pets can travel all over the country

together. Jack has been in 18 differentstates, and we swam together in all ofthem. It’s definitely different state bystate, though, and California is verydog friendly. I think we humanizeour pets more here than in otherplaces.”

Taking your dog out for an outdooractivity, whether it’s a four-day camp-ing trip or an afternoon boot campclass, should be a no-brainer,Celapino said.

“I just can’t believe it when I seepeople out walking, and they’ve lefttheir pet at home,” she said. “Maybeit’s because the dog is not well be-haved enough, I don’t know. I can’toveremphasize the fact that peopleneed to train their dogs, and not justpuppy training when they’re 6 weeksold. You wouldn’t only teach yourchild things when they’re a toddler, and leave it at that, would you?”

FRIDAY JUNE 22 7-10 PMCAMP RUN-A-MUTT / POINT LOMA, 4030 SPORTS ARENA BLVD, SAN DIEGO

$25 RSVP www.DogPartyDay.com

Iadmit it. I’m a party girl. I host par-ties that bring out the best in dogsand their people and I am inviting

you to the 2nd annual National DogParty Day™ on June 22.

There will be three parties takingplace that night in San Diego, Miamiand New York City. At each party, allnet proceeds will benefit three hard-working charities: Spay Neuter ActionProject in San Diego (SNAP), Bideaweein New York City and Paws 4 You Res-cue in Miami.

I extend a personal invitation for allyou San Diego pet lovers to participatein the party taking place at Camp-Run-A-Mutt/Point Loma, 4030 SportsArena Boulevard, San Diego on June 22from 7-10 p.m. Tickets are $25 apieceand you can register now by visitingwww.dogpartyday.com/sandiego fordetails and party rules. Space is limited, but register today.

In the pet world, I happily “wear”many collars – author, animal behaviorconsultant, radio show host and pet firstaid instructor. But I absolutely lovebeing known as America’s Party Animal.

I’ve staged parties for 500 in Kauai atthe annual Love a Dog Day and for 800-plus mutt-loving members of the mili-tary at a Navy base in San Diego. I’veeven demonstrated a dog party withmy Husky-Golden retriever mix Chip-per before cameras in a CNN-Headlinestudio in New York City.

Three Reasons To PartyNo matter if the party is big or small,

I focus on these three goals: To sneak in good doggy manners in a

fun setting. Just like us, dogs learn bestwhen the atmosphere is fun and full ofpositive, can-do energy. At my parties, all dogs are on leashes and bring their“dates” – their favorite person. Dogsget the chance to participate in a vari-ety of games and gobble up healthytreats.

To benefit worthy pet charities. Thisyear, all net proceeds from the SanDiego party will benefit SNAP. Thissmall-but-dedicated group of volun-teers led by Dorell Sackett providesfree or low-cost spays and neuters tokeep a lid on pet overpopulation. We

are hoping to park the huge SNAP mo-bile van in the parking lot at the partyso attendees can step inside and take amini-tour.

At most parties, it is common to fretabout what you’re wearing or whatsmall talk you will engage in. At myparties, dogs take center stage, allow-ing you to live in the now and enjoycreating wonderful memories withyour dog.

I believe in the power of purpose-ful play for both dogs and people. Both deserve the chance to laugh, love and learn. That’s why I boldlycreated National Dog Party Day™.My goal is to sponsor big and smallparties all over America on the thirdFriday of every June.

June 22: Double Dog Day Celebration

Why that date? As founder of FourLegged Life.com, I wanted to partnerwith another group committed tobolstering the people-dog bond. I

found the perfect match: Pet Sitters International. Each thirdFriday in June, PSI sponsors Take Your Dog To Work Day™. Ireached out to PSI founder Patti Moran with the idea of staginga Double Dog Day Celebration. We even came up with a mottofor our dual event: “We work like a dog by day and party likea pup at night.”

If you have a business, I encourage you to visit www.takey-ourdog.com and see how your company can participate thisyear – June 22 – in Take Your Dog To Work Day™. I promisethe attendance in your office will be high because of havingcanines in cubicles and other work places.

Then go home, get into your party clothes, grab the leashand bring your dog to the party taking place at Camp-Run-A-Mutt. A big paws up goes to the camp’s owner, Heather Rolin-ski, for donating her center for the party. The camp featuresplenty of indoor and outdoor space to give attendees lots ofopportunities to participate in games, do some doggy dancingand enjoy lip-smacking appetizers. We also appreciate SanDiego Pets Magazine for being our local media sponsor.

As party host, I promise you three-hours of jammed packfun and the opportunity to win mega prizes generously

donated by many sponsors. You will get to do the SuperSmiley Flash Mob with award-winning and animal adop-tion advocate Megan Blake.

Participate in K9 KaraokeWe will play plenty of games, including Snoopy Says, Ca-

nine Musical Chairs and Walk This Way Doggy, and we’veadded a new event this year: K9 Karaoke. No, this isn’t a com-petition of dogs howling and baying. K9 Karaoke features peo-ple serenading their dogs.

We are looking five or six people to register in advance forthis contest. Contact me at [email protected]. Wewant you to grab the mike, bring your dog on stage and beltout a favorite song that best captures your connection withyour dog. A panel of American Idol-like judges will crown thetop K9 crooner who will be awarded a major prize. So, startrehearsing now!

BOTTOM LINE: Dogs are born party animals and they learnbest in a fun setting. I hope you will join us on June 22. After all, when it comes to party trends, dog parties win, paws down! For more information, please visit www.dogpartyday.com.

“Owning a dog is so good for mind, body and soul,” said Christina Page, alocal writer and health care marketingmanager. “Toby, my 3-year-old beaglemix, deserves the exercise, so he en-courages me to exercise. He bounds upthe stairs with such enthusiasm thatit's impossible not to follow up withequal pep in my step.”

To get the most cardio benefit, youneed to walk fast enough to get yourheart rate up. The America Heart As-sociation indicates that “brisk walkingis beneficial when done regularly for atotal of 30 minutes or longer at leastfive days a week.”

Dog owners take walks more fre-quently, walk for longer periods, walkat a quicker rate and are more likely toenjoy an active lifestyle because oftheir canine companion. Page agrees.“Toby walks much faster than I do, soI have to pick up the pace to keep up.”

The survey revealed that one-quar-ter of people with children and petsregularly make trips to parks andother outdoor areas because of theirdog. Oscar Escobedo and his wife,Cathy take Lexi, their 8-year-oldboxer-lab mix along on family camp-ing trips, hikes and outings to dogbeach. “She loves to have space to playcatch with a tennis ball, fetch the Fris-bee or just run around,” said Oscar.

“Toby has strengthened my ties withfriends who have dogs, because of ourshared interest,” added Page. “Being adog owner has forged conversationswith new people at the dog park. Even

though I don't know any of theirnames, I do know the names of theirdogs and that's enough.”

IMPROVEYOURHEARTHEALTH–WALKTHEDOG

When it comes to improving your heart health and overall wellness, taking Max, Fluffy or Fidofor a walk is just what the doctor ordered. Dogs are the reason behind two-thirds of the walks theirowners take each week and more than half would rather exercise with their pets, than workoutalone, according to a survey commissioned by Mars Petcare.

Pets can also provide the socialsupport so crucial to stickingwith an exercise program andultimately improve your over-all well being.

A Letter From Bolt’s New Family“Bolt is doing great! I think he has finally settled in. His

weight is coming along nicely now, especially since I think heis no longer so nervous with his new surroundings.

He's made great improvements with his behavior on thewalks. We had [San Diego Humane Society Sr. Trainer] Mar-garet here for a couple training sessions and that really helped. He rarely barks at cars now and what used to be a very"chaotic", very short, walk around the block has turned intonice 20-30 minutes walks around the neighborhood. I've juststarted taking him on small hikes in Presidio Park. He seems toreally like that and is very curious about the squirrels and littlelizards we see.

Fortunately he is showing no problems with his arthritis anddysplasia. As long as we keep the activity moderate, he doesfine. That is good, since he loves chasing the ball. We'll playsoccer with the kids in the backyard and he loves that. He'llkeep a deflated ball in his mouth and just follow us with theball. He loves playing defense and has now started to bat atthe ball with his paws and even stop it with his mouth so youcan't get past him. Very cute!

He continues to do great with the kids and their friends thatcome to the house. He views everyone that comes to the houseas a potential playmate so greets everyone very happily. Ofcourse, the kids love playing with him too.”

Dear Dr. Schwartz,I have three children, three-year-old

twin boys and a 6-year-old girl. Theyhave been begging me for a dog forages, so I’m about to purchase a GoldenRetriever puppy because everythingI’ve read says this breed is so great withchildren. What are your thoughts?

Thanks, Busy Dad

Dear Busy Dad,Most of the dog breed books out

there are filled with anecdotal tidbitsthat can be cut and pasted into anynumber of breeds, and just switchingthe pictures to match. Golden Retriev-ers can be wonderful dogs. My latebrother Joey was a beautiful, nobleGolden. My sister Josie is a lovelysweetheart of a Golden girl. BUT, for abusy household with three young chil-dren, you have to realize that getting adog, especially a puppy, is like havinganother child. Are you ready for that? You don’t really expect your children totake care of this dog, do you? Are youprepared to devote hours every day toa young dog who needs to walk, playand socialize with other dogs, too? Re-alize that the mistakes you make inraising a large dog are amplified com-pared to the same mistakes you mightmake in raising a small dog. The conse-quences of your inexperience will be farmore significant the bigger your dog is.

SO YOU HAVE SEVERAL CHOICES:1) Get an adult Golden Retriever

from a shelter or rescue organizationwhere it has already been evaluated asa true family dog. 2) Get a smalleradult dog that is easier to care for (e.g.less brushing is needed for Pugs,Boston Terriers). 3) Wait until your chil-dren are older. Regardless of the breed,it’s the individual dog that has to beperfect for your family. And you haveto be ready to provide for all his basic

needs and keep him safe from the anticsof three spirited kids. Any dog you ac-quire will not be a toy for the children;you all have to be prepared to acceptresponsibility for the dog’s welfare fora lifetime.

Dear Dr. Schwartz,I recently lost one of my two cats to

old age and kidney failure. My remain-ing cat Baby seems lonely, but at 11years of age I’m wondering how shemight take to a new kitten?

Dear Baby’s Mama,Is Baby lonely or are you still griev-

ing for your other cat? Baby might beperfectly happy to have the rule of thehouse. However, if you do want ayoung kitten my suggestion would beto get two! That way, they will enter-tain each other and give Baby somepeace. She might still be playful, butyou don’t want her to be the only play-mate for a solitary kitten. Get newtoys, a cat tree or two, and at least

three litter boxes in different areas ofyour home to give them lots of op-tions. You might consider an oldercalm cat who is used to living withother cats. The most important thing isto introduce them very slowly. Keepthe newcomer(s) confined to a catproof room for several weeks beforethey are let out to explore their newhome. You can never undo a bad firstimpression, so take more than enoughtime to get it right. LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT (ORMAYBEMAX JUST LIKESMAKE-UP)

www.sandiegopetsmagazine.com | JUNE 2012 21

Iarrived at Meg’s house. She had called me, desperate for agood home-school tutor for her 9-year-old son. He was tooill to attend regular school, and Meg pulled him out.

So I waltz on over there and knock on the door. A deep barkmet my ears, followed by that crying whine dogs make whenthey really, really want to eat that yummy bone or chew on thatpesky toy or chase that strange woman knocking on the door.

And that was how I met Max. He was a big 80-plus-poundGerman shepherd/Lab mix, about a year old, tall enough toreach my midthigh (and I’m 5-9!), restrained on a leash by atiny woman holding his chain with both hands while bracingherself in the bathroom doorway.

She seemed nervous about something. Huh.“You must be Kris,” she said. “I have to introduce you to

Max. He bites.”But Max wasn’t thinking of biting. He was whining, and his

tail was wagging so hard that Meg’s legs would be bruised fordays.

“Oh,” I cooed; “who’s the big strong puppy? Is oo full ofloves for me?”

Max promptly head-butted my knees so hard that he liter-ally knocked me on my tushie and licked the makeup off oneside of my face.

“Huh,” said Meg, unbracing and removing Max’s chain.“He’s never done that before. I guess you’re OK.” And shesmiled and winked at me, the first smile from two women who,as it turned out, were destined to become lifelong friends.

B y KR JOHNSON | SAN D I EGO PETS

But Max wasn’t done with me yet. I sat down with 9-year-oldJoey at the dining table, and Max channeled his inner lap-dog,promptly flinging the front half of his body right on my lap, knocking me off the chair and on my tushie—again!

“Do you think he likes me?” I asked Joey, who was grinningfrom ear to ear now as I tried (unsuccessfully) to save themakeup on the other side of my face.

And what does my very precocious student say? “Naw. He’s just tasting you.”

Summer vacations are meant forthe family. And since your pet isas family as family gets, leavingit behind while you recharge

your batteries would be like interrupt-ing the family bloodline or something.Increases in pet ownership and looserregulations on boarding pets make iteasier than ever to take your compan-ion with you—today’s hotel ownershave ramped up their facilities accord-ingly, offering everything from on-sitevet services to discounts at nearby petboutiques.

Some 160 local venues call them-selves pet-friendly; this can mean any-thing from allowing the animal in theroom all the way up to Happy Hour in-vitations (with a view!). We’ve prepareda brief list of the pet-friendliest lodgingswe could find in San Diego, Honolulu,San Francisco, Las Vegas and Sedona,Ariz.—if your vacation plans don’t in-clude those cities, the story might atleast jog a thought or two about whatyou might consider in the way of yourdestination’s available amenities(bringfido.com is a good resource forpet-friendly accommodations in othercities). It’s all about the family, after all,and the four-legger who’s undoubt-edly its most important member.

San DiegoThe Hotel Indigo, at 509 Ninth Ave.

Downtown, has been open since 2009,with its flagship facility unveiled in At-lanta five years before. Pat McTigue, thelocal hotel’s marketing director, notedthat the Atlanta venue had lots of dogowners nearby—“and what better wayto get some exposure or awarenessabout the hotel than to invite the neigh-bors in. We had a happy hour at the bar,and the neighbors were encouraged tobring their dogs. It was really success-ful; the community really took to it.”

The San Diego owners, noting the de-

mand for pet accommodations, tookthe idea a step further—and now, oncea month, the Indigo’s Level9 Bar, whichironically overlooks PETCO Park, wel-comes the guests’ dogs as part of the ca-maraderie. “We usually get about 50 to75 dogs,” McTigue said, “and our ca-pacity up there is 160. If you can imag-ine all those dogs that come withpeople, that’s a pretty big turnout.”

Most of the dogs are off-leash, andMcTigue said that hasn’t resulted in anyunpleasantness among the animals. “Ithink the dogs are more understandingof one another,” he explained.

Pet-friendly hotels make summer vacation a true family affair

The Indigo’s Level9 Bar and outdoor patio is as dog-friendly as it comes.

Hotel Indigo, which gets modest callfor cat accommodations as well, doesn’tcharge fees or deposits on pets. “Be-cause we’re so pet-friendly,” McTiguesaid, “I think dog owners are that muchmore respectful. People just really ap-preciate the fact that they can bringtheir dog.

HonoluluA Hawaii rule change in 2003 relaxes

regulations on animal quarantine. Ac-cording to the owners at Honolulu’sAqua Waikiki Wave hotel, that trans-lated to a 30 percent increase in requestsfor pet accommodations in just threeyears. Today, this hip boutique venuewelcomes one to two dogs (up to 40pounds each) per customer and chargesa $100 security deposit and a fee of $35per night. Treats, food and water bowls, dog liners, dog beds and a take-hometoy are included in the package; theguest service desk will hook you upwith a daycare service or veterinarycare. San FranciscoThe Serrano Hotel might as well be a

high-end kennel. The Tenderloin Dis-trict venue regales its animal guestswith rawhide fetch-it sticks, lamb-and-rice dog and cat food, disposableclean-up bags, designer water and

even theme-based fun and games. Thelobby has a gigrundous gourmet treatsshop, and pets stay for free to boot. Formore, call 415-885-2500 or see serra-nohotel.com.

Las VegasLas Vegas is a bit of a different—uh—

animal than most cities. So much com-ing and going often translates to muchmore stringent requirements at hotelswhen pets are involved; most places re-quire a live human being to stay in theroom with the animal. But staying atthe La Quinta Inn & Suites Las VegasAirport South offers one advantage thatvery few other Vegas hotels do: Petsstay free, which means you can spendmore on everything that Vegas is about.Call 702-492-8900 or see lq.com.

Welcome to the Dr.'s Corner.I am Dr. Jason Sweitzer andI am a veterinarian at Mis-sion Animal and Bird Hospi-tal in Oceanside with aspecific interest in Emer-gency Medicine, Behavior, and Exotic Animals. Thiscolumn is your chance toask a vet your questions. I’llpick topics that are the mosttimely and useful to petowners but will try to re-spond to all e-mails. Pleasesubmit your questions [email protected].

I have been thinking of switchingto a grain free, raw diet for my dog.Is there anything I need to know?

A:This is a great question andone of my biggest pet peevesso I am glad you asked. Let

me break this down into the raw fooddiet portion, and then the grain free con-cern.

Raw food diets have many claimedgreat health effects including elimina-tion of itching, skin infections, loosestools, vomiting, and being the morenatural food, etc. Most of these are notonly not true but they can be worse onraw food diets. If they are improved, itis often for a reason other than being araw food. The biggest reason a raw dietmay help is because it contains a differ-ent protein source than you were feed-ing before (a cooked packaged food hasthe same effects). The things they don'tmention about raw foods is food safety

and that dogs are not wolves. A Germanshepherd dog or chihuahua is nothinglike a coyote or wolf and they actuallyhave physical differences includingdigestion and especially longevity. Rawfoods markedly increase the bacterialcounts throughout your home. Remem-ber you clean your counters afterpreparing meat but your dog will licktheir bowl, lick their feet and walk allover the house and sit on the couch orbed. Then they will lick your hand orgive you a kiss. Guess how much Sal-monella and E. coli they just spread overyour whole house? A Board CertifiedVeterinary Nutritionist I spoke torecommended to never feed your dog araw food diet. Period.

As for the grain-free craze. This wasperpetrated by food companies realizingthat humans had some grain allergiesand dogs have skin allergies so dogsmust have grain allergies. If they soldgrain or gluten-free foods, they couldcharge a lot more for it. We're talkingmaking millions of dollars off thesefoods. It makes sense, the problem is itjust isn't true. Skin allergies in dogs arecomposed of fleas, food, and environ-ment with food usually the signifi-cantly smallest portion. Of those dogswho actually have food allergies, theoverwhelming majority are to the meatprotein in their diet with chicken, beef, and dairy making up almost the entirefood allergy pie. They are not bad justthe most commonly used proteins. Theremainder of the food allergies are to

the less commonly used proteins likefish, rabbit, duck, lamb, etc. with grainsand gluten not even registering as a blipon the allergy spectrum. I spoke to oneof the major food companies and theyadmitted to me that the only reasonthey came out with a grain free diet, isbecause that is what everyone is buyingand they lost market share without it.No science, no research, just puremoney and business.

If you want to help your dog (andthese are also true for cats), do not feedgrain or gluten free diets and neverfeed raw food as it can cause hemor-rhagic gastroenteritis (bloody diar-rhea). Instead, talk to your veterinarianso they can try to first evaluate if a diettrial may even be helpful (many times itis fleas or environment that need ad-dressed instead) and help guide youthrough the search for the right food. Soto answer your question about whatyou need to know...don’t do it! Hopethat helps keep yourself, your animals, and your family safer, and helps keepyour wallet fuller.
