Dear Alumni of Emanuel School,

That we are close to half way through the year so quickly is always a mystery! We have been watching our new building grow and develop day by day and are very excited to be preparing to move in early next term. We hope that you will all be able to come and walk through

this signifi cant addition to our facilities during our planned Alumni function late in the year.

This year has seen an increase in the opportunities for our students to travel overseas and experience different cultures. At the end of 2014, we had 26 Year 10 students go to Israel on a six-week program that saw them learning about Israel’s history, people, community action programs and innovations. This year we have had over 50 students express their interest in going on this program (Chavayah). The experience has been made possible by the very generous donation of a community member and facilitated by the JCA, who have pledged to continue this support into the future. Their vision is that all Jewish students who wish to travel and learn about Israel should be able to, regardless of the fi nancial cost.

While our connections with Jilkminggan in the Northern Territory have continued, we have also opened up another opportunity for

expanding our horizons through a ten-day trip to East Timor, to connect with a community there. The initiative for this Emanuel program came from fi ve of our current students and alumni (Jake Silove 2014, Sam Koslowski 2012 and Jonty Katz 2012) who have travelled to East Timor with the United Nations Youth organisation in recent years. We look forward to a successful inaugural experience for the group who will take up this opportunity in August of this year.

As you will read below, our Gesher Committee has this year continued to hold events to engage members of our community, including current and past parents, ex-students, grandparents and friends.

Our P & F Committee is organising a Golf Day on 29 October at Bonnie Doon – keep an eye out for the advertising for this event and plan to join with other golfers for what is sure to be a very enjoyable day. The P & F is raising funds to assist the School with realizing our goal of making our playground more interesting and effective as a play space.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Alumni function to show you all our new building on 29 November.

Best wishes Anne Hastings, Principal

We hope you are becoming familiar with the word “Gesher” – Hebrew for “bridge”. Our Gesher community activities go from strength to strength!

We held our inaugural and very successful “Jazz on the

Hill” in mid-March at which the alumni band 33 Degrees

performed, as did some of our School Jazz bands.

We hope some of you will join us for this event next year.

We continue with our bi-annual CBD Networking Breakfast

as well as our Emanuel Striders team in The Mother’s

Day Classic and it would be great to see some of you

join our team, “Emanuel School Striders” for City2Surf

on 9 August www.city2surf.com.au (our password is

‘MindSpiritBeing’). We look forward to welcoming you

again at future events, both your reunions and also

the various School events planned for later in the year,

including a special alumni afternoon to showcase the new

building. We always love to hear your news and we thank

you for your contributions to the life of our amazing School

and community!

Life after School• Jewish Changemakers Awards: This annual

event had a brief to nominate someone in the Jewish community who is making the world a better place. Partnered by B’nai B’rith Alfred Dreyfus Anti-Defamation Unit and JNF, it attracted over 50 exceptional nominations from school students to young professionals in our community. A number of our alumni – Jeremy Spinak (’00), Genna Radnan (’09), Lanna Newman-Plant (’10), Avia Madar (’10) and Jonty Katz (’12) were nominated for the various awards as were three current students. We were certainly very proud of the efforts of all of our nominees, and especially proud of Jeremy Spinak, President of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, who won the prestigious B’nai B’rith Award for Leadership (28 & 29)

Commerce degree or similar, so my plan was to do a technical degree fi rst and then an MBA a few years afterwards once I had some professional experience. I ended up studying Petroleum Engineering at UNSW, and during my penultimate year of study, I was offered a Graduate position with Woodside Energy. Before moving to Perth, I completed my fi nal year of my degree and married my girlfriend of six years, Fiona. We’ve been living in Western Australia for over three years now, and I’ve been promoted to a fully-fl edged Petroleum Engineer at the same Company. During my time at Woodside so far, I’ve had opportunities to work on Gas Platforms and Oil FPSOs, a short 150km helicopter ride offshore of the Northern region of Western Australia, as well as several roles based in the offi ce in Perth. Earlier this year, Fi gave birth to our fi rst child – Felicity – who is now taking up the majority of my time when I’m not at work. (31)

I joined several performance groups during my undergraduate years, including Sydney University Musical Theatre Ensemble (MUSE) and Science Revue. This year, I joined an A Cappella group with some wonderful people that I met through my various extra-curricular performances. Our group is called The Acappelicans. You can fi nd us on Facebook to see what we get up to. Just recently we had the honour of competing in the Australian A Cappella State Finals. We came second and as a result, in September this year, we will travel to Melbourne to compete for a chance to participate in the National Final. Singing has really expanded my University experience and is has been terrifi c to connect with a group of people who sing just for the love of it.” (32 - pictured with her father & niece)

Madi Apps Class of 2009“Since fi nishing school in 2009, I have completed a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, have had three career changes and have left footprints in America, Asia and Europe (a few times over). I caught the travel bug during my gap year and have never fully scratched the itch since… I doubt I ever will. While studying at university, I worked for two different companies specialising in Public Relations and Digital Marketing. After three years of such work, and nearing the end of my degree, my career momentum ground to a halt when I realised I was following a path that I didn’t particularly enjoy. And so began my ‘quarter-life-crisis’… The remedy? I packed my bags and I moved to Spain. There I led a completely nocturnal life fuelled by a staple diet of sangria and tapas. I lived with people I didn’t know, I danced to music I didn’t like, and I travelled to places I’d never been. It was truly wonderful. While living away, I also reconnected with four of my favourite pastimes – reading, writing, travelling and learning, which led to an epiphany… why couldn’t my career combine all four elements?Eight months on, I returned home with an empty wallet, a full heart, and a readiness to chase my new career dream of becoming a journalist. After months of persistence and a stroke of luck, I ended up landing a wonderful role at 60 Minutes. There, I take care of the digital space, which consists of everything from manning social

media communications, to producing weekly online segments called ‘Extra Minutes’. It’s an all-consuming job, but I absolutely love it.I often reminisce about my days at Emanuel and how they shaped me to be the person that I am today. I will always remember my very last day of Year 12, when a big group of us planted ourselves on a grassy patch outside B12. We were armed with one guitar, a few too many tears and whole lot of love. It was an incredibly heart-warming experience that fully encapsulated my beautiful time at Emanuel. The friendships I made and the lessons I learned will last me a lifetime. And then some…”

Jack MalkiClass of 1993My family emigrated from Italy to Australia in December 1981. None of us spoke English when we arrived in Sydney I was at Emanuel School from Year 5 to Year 12, my sister Silvia, from Year 3 to Year 12 (’95) and my brother Daniel was at the School from Year K to Year 10 (’02), so we were pretty well entrenched!!Interestingly, I only recently found out that my father, Albert Malki, has his name on the Founders’ Board which is on display in the School’s Administration Building!More than 50 percent of my class was either non-Jewish or had some kind of “part Jewish heritage”.Our class was relatively small until Year 10 when we had around ten Indonesian students join. I completely lost track of them after school but recently I have been seeing them when I go to Indonesia for work, which has been great. I see several local classmates and keep in touch with others who have moved to Perth and Melbourne. When I fi nished school I went to UNSW and completed a commerce degree, majoring in fi nance and marketing. I had always dreamed about working in marketing and advertising and had a job opportunity to join Proctor and Gamble, but after backpacking around the world, came back to a job in fi nance as a funds manager.

Some years later I joined our family business, Jet Technologies, which is a fairly specialised company that works in the printing and packaging markets. Most people do not realise how technical and involved that industry is, but it has been an interesting business to learn and work in.Since my backpacking days as a student, travelling to various countries has always been a great interest of mine – these days with three children, we have to pick places that interest them as well, but it is still fun. Emanuel School was a small school when I joined in the mid-80’s. The teachers were generally quite young and there was great camaraderie between students and teachers. We had our 20-year reunion at the end of 2013 and I was amazed at the response and turnout of our former teachers who all spoke with the same fondness about the special environment at the School at the time. Growing up in such a special environment at school meant that we got to know each other really well (classmates and teachers alike) and it was amazing to see how little any of us had actually changed in those 20 years!
