We are now working the last month of the Fraternal Year. We finished May with an intake of 124 members for a 5.51% intake, half of what we did in April. We finished last place for the month in Division 1. To date we stand at 91.56% of our Supreme Council membership requirements leaving us with just 190 more to hit our gross intake quota. We rank 32nd of the 74 K of C Jurisdictions worldwide and we rank 3rd among the Division 1 State Councils still slightly behind Florida and Texas. Yes, we are continuing to grow. I don’t like to get too far ahead of myself but we are at +279 Net/Net (intake less suspensions, withdraws, deaths, and out of state transfers) and we are still showing new growth in Ohio. This places us 3rd in the Order behind Louisiana and Mexico. With the good recruiting months we have had Ohio is still over the 58,000 member mark. Today we stand at 58,017 members strong. Thank you to everyone who is working to make this happen. Grand Knights and Membership Directors please keep membership the foremost priority in every one of your councils throughout this great state of Ohio. If the State of Ohio is to improve our membership status and grow as a jurisdiction we need every Council to step up and begin recruiting. A new member from each Council would make a significant impact on our bottom line today. We are all on the same team and all in the game together. I need a firm commitment from all involved to make this happen. We are again looking for some opportunities again in June. Brother Knights,

A little about membership…

We slipped a little in May and did not have the month we hoped for. We are now working the last month of the Fraternal Year. We finished May with an intake of 124 members for a 5.51% intake, half of what we did in April. We finished last place for the month in Division 1. please take a moment and ask yourself why. We are just 190 new members away from reaching the Supreme Council Circle of Honor. I know we can do this. There are still a lot of Admission Degrees scheduled, sign up a catholic man and get him to a degree today.

Brothers I will keep it short here this month however please see the link below to the “Report of the State Deputy, the State of the State Address” from the recent State Convention. In closing… May God continue to Bless you as you continue to the work you do in Jesus name. Dedicate everything you

do for Him to the honor and glory of God and see what changes it will make in your life. Bob Collins State Deputy

Reflections from State Chaplain Father Edward Janoch, State Chaplain

It is said that being a member of the Knights of Columbus makes a man a better Catholic, husband, and father. I pray that all of our Fathers in our council are beginning to notice this change. If you do not, maybe your wife and children notice this change. Sometimes we do not see the change in us while others do. If being a better Catholic, husband, and father is not yet noticed; it could be that the change in you is still internal; it may be due to the fact that your involvement with the Knights of Columbus is still minimal. It is said that the more involved one is in the Knights of Columbus the more one cannot hid his Catholicity. A man in the Knights of Columbus cannot help but to evangelize; more by his actions

then by his words. Let this Father’s Day be the commencement of our commitment to God, Church, and Family by becoming more involved in this next fraternal year, which begins on July 1, 2016. There is a consecration to the Holy Family which was proclaimed by the attendees of the 117th Ohio State Council Convention. I have included this in this month’s reflections. I would suggest that this be said with the entire family on Father’s Day as the entire family consecrate themselves to the Holy Family of Nazareth. Become a Better Catholic, Husband, and Father through the Knights of Columbus.

Vivat Jesus! Fr. Edward J. Janoch Worthy State Chaplain

O Lord Jesus, you lived in the home of Mary and Joseph in Nazareth.

There you grew in age, wisdom and grace as you prepared to fulfill your mission

as our Redeemer. We entrust our family to you.

O Blessed Mary,

you are the Mother of our Savior. At Nazareth you cared for Jesus

and nurtured him in the peace and joy of your home. We entrust our family to you.

O Saint Joseph,

you provided a secure and loving home for Jesus and Mary, and gave us a model of fatherhood

while showing us the dignity of work. We entrust our family to you.

Holy Family, we consecrate ourselves and our family to you.

May we be completely united in a love that is lasting, faithful and open to the gift of new life.

Help us to grow in virtue, to forgive one another from our hearts,

and to live in peace all our days. Keep us strong in faith, persevering in prayer,

diligent in our work, and generous toward those in need. May our home, O Holy Family,

truly become a domestic church where we reflect your example in our daily life. Amen.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!

Prayer composed by Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore, Supreme Chaplain

Saint of the Month St. Columba of Iona June 9

th

“O Lord, grant us that love which can never die, which will enkindle our lamps but not

extinguish them, so that they may shine in us and bring light to others. Most dear Savior,

enkindle our lamps that they may shine forever in your temple. May we receive

unquenchable light from you so that our darkness will be illuminated and the darkness

of the world will be made less. Amen.” St. Columba of Iona

St. Columba of Iona [Irish: Colm Cille “Dove of the Church”] 521-597, born probably in Donegal Ireland of royal descent he studied at Moville under St. Finnian then in Leinster at the monastery of Clonard under another St. Finnian. He was ordained before he was twenty-five and spent the next fifteen years preaching and setting up foundations at Derry, Durrow, and Kells. Possibly because of a family feud which resulted in the death of 3,000 and for which he considered himself partly responsible he left Ireland at 42 and landed on the island of Iona off the coast of Scotland. There he built the monastery which was to become world famous. With SS. Canice and Comgall he spread the gospel to the Picts; he also developed a monastic rule which many followed until the introduction of St. Benedict’s. He died on Iona and is also known as Colm, Colum and Columkille. Feast day is June 9. [Patron Saint for the Diocese of Youngstown]

Silver Rose One Life, One Rose The Silver Rose: One Life, One Rose, will be entering the Great State of Ohio on July 3, 2016. Have each Diocese made arrangements to have the Silver Rose come to the Cathedral, parish church or council during their diocesan visit? Please arrange for the Silver Rose to be hosted in your diocese and contact your State Officer of your Diocese to register your parish or council. You can also send information to Worthy State Advocate Mark Saracusa who is the Silver Rose Chairman. We would like to have the schedule all filled by our District Deputy Meeting on June 24-26, 2016, in Columbus, Ohio.

Mother of Good Counsel Prayer Venerable Pope Pius XII O Holy Virgin, to whose feet we are led by our anxious uncertainty in our search for and attainment of what is true and good, invoking you by the sweet title of Mother of Good Counsel, we beseech you to come to our assistance, when, along the road of this life, the darkness of error and of evil conspires towards our ruin by leading our minds and our hearts astray. O Seat of Wisdom and Star of the Sea, enlighten the doubtful and the erring, that they be not seduced by the false appearances of good; render them steadfast in the face of the hostile and corrupting influences of passion and of sin. O Mother of Good Counsel, obtain for us from your Divine Son a great love of virtue, and, in the hour of uncertainty and trial, the strength to embrace the way that leads to our salvation. If your hand sustains us, we shall walk unmolested along the path indicated to us by the life and words of Jesus, our Redeemer; and having followed freely and securely, even in the midst of this world's strife, the Sun of Truth and Justice under your maternal Star, we shall come to the enjoyment of full and eternal peace with you in the haven of salvation. Amen.

Can You Smell Circle of Honor

We are at the home stretch of this fraternal year. Once this article comes out we will have a little under 1 month left in this fraternal year ending June 30, 2016 to achieve Circle of Honor, the highest honor a State Council can get from Supreme Council. We need to bring in 208 members before June 30

th

to accomplish this. We are right where we need to be and it has been 7 years since we have achieved this award under past State Deputy Larry Moegling in the 2008-2009 Fraternal Year. Let’s break this 7 year drought and make this happen this year!!! Below I’m going to focus on non-recruiting councils, Land of 100 Members, Star Council requirements, Form 450C, Form 450, Form 100’s, and the Retention process starting immediately with new members.

I need HELP From Non-

Recruiting Councils

There is still 56 councils that have done the same thing month after month since July 1

st. Do you know what the same

thing they have done? If you said they have not recruited a new member yet you would be 100% correct. Our Worthy State Deputy and I need these councils to jump on board and bring in a new member. If they did just think what our numbers as a state would look like. A lot of times getting that first member in is all you need to get a few more especially if you promote the Shining Armor Award.

This encourages the new members to bring in a new member and if you make a big deal at your council about it trust me the new members will come!!! . I’m hoping that we can have this list down to less than 30 by June 1

st. Below you will

find all of the Councils that have not recruited a new member as of 6/1/2016

4 MORES: MORE Knights bring MORE hands

& hearts, to raise MORE funds and to

evangelize, doing GOD’S good works

helping MORE people in need!

Form 450 and Form 450C is like GOLD!!! District Deputies please make sure within 3-7 days of

holding a degree in your District the Form 450 is turned

in. Grand Knights and Financial Secretaries the Form

450C should be sent in within 3-7 days of doing a

degree. This is extremely important because this allows

us to track if Supreme actually processed your Form

100’s! If you took the time to bring in a new member the

State Membership Team wants to make sure you get

credit for your hard work and effort.

These should be filled on line now at the State

Website and then it automatically sends it to who it

needs to go to. Take advantage of this!!!

Form 100’s Within 3-7 days of a degree any Form 100’s should be emailed

to the Supreme Council at [email protected] or to

[email protected] Supreme is able to process the

Form 100 much quicker this way and you have a receipt that

they were sent in your sent mail. Plus this saves your council

the cost of a stamp every time new members are brought in.

Also, please make sure that every part of this Form 100 is filled

out or the Form 100 will not be processed. Just this month we

had over 25 Form 100’s that were processed extremely late

because of this. We can’t afford for this to happen in these last

three months when we are trying to achieve Circle of Honor!!!

Land of 1,000 Members The Land of 1000 Members membership Drive is now over. See below for the final numbers and winners.

Retention Process Starts Immediately with New Members Once you bring in a new member the retention process should start right away. Make sure this new member feels welcomed and make sure you get him involved in a committee immediately. The below poem is the rea-son why.

“I’m the Guy” (Author Unknown)

I’m the guy who asked to join your organization. I’m the guy who paid his dues to join. I’m the guy who stood up in front of you and promised to be faithful and loyal. I’m the guy who came to your meetings and no one paid at-tention to. I tried several times to be friends, but they all had their own buddies to talk to and sit next to. I sat down several times, but no one paid any attention to me. I hoped very much that someone would have asked me to take part in a fund raising project or something, but no one saw my efforts when I volunteered. I missed a few meetings after joining because I was sick and couldn’t be there. No one asked me at the next meeting where I had been. I guess it didn’t matter very much to others whether I was there or not. The next meeting, I decided to stay home and watch TV. The following meeting, I attended, but no one asked me where I was for the last meeting. You might say I’m a good guy or a “good family man” who holds a responsible job and loves his community and coun-try. You know who else I am? THE GUY WHO NEVER CAME BACK. It amuses me how the heads of organizations and the mem-bers discuss WHY the organization is losing members. It amuses me to think that they spend so much time looking for NEW members when I was there all the time. All they need to do was make me feel needed, wanted, and WELCOME!

Retention, Act II Michael Jordon (East) / Bill Wirtz (West)

A year ago we were about to embark on the new fraternal year with the new State Deputy and a new set of program activities under the heading of Retention. We started by defining “retention” choosing the following: “the fact of keeping something in one's memory” or “the act or power of remembering things.” Why use this version? We emphasized that “retention” is not about the Form 1845 process. We still strongly recommend we all be more proactive, so as to lessen the need for the Form 1845. Please continue to make contact with our Brothers by any means necessary to ensure they are not forgotten, to help them to feel needed and respected, and to impress upon them how they are valued members of our fraternity. Put your Retention Committee into action well ahead of the 1845 process and throughout the entire fraternal year. For those who have embraced the Retention Activities Program this past year, thank you for your efforts to reach out to all our current members. For the rest, be prepared to get off the sidelines and get in the game. For questions and assistance please don’t hesitate to contact the Ohio State Council Retention Directors.

Membership Mission #12 Dads, Grads and Holy Men...Oh My! June is a special time of the year. Graduations and Father’s Day make for a very busy month for many. These are great opportunities to recruit new members. Now that the kids are done with school, dad has more time to grow in faith. That amazing graduate is of age to join the Knights. There will be Priests and Deacons at many of those graduation celebrations. Heck, it’s a smorgasbord of available men. Everyone has the opportunity to “cash-in” on the prospects. See the flyer on the next page or watch the video clicking below.

I’d like to congratulate all the winners who were honored at the state convention. It was great to see so many councils and individuals get recognized for their efforts. Competition for the activity of the year in the family program was very close largely due to the excellent and detailed write ups about the activities. I’d like to thank all the councils that submitted a Family of the Year nomination. In some diocese, there was a clear stand out but; in others it took significant contemplation to pick the winners. Picking Family of the Year for the state was incredibly difficult but I appreciated that it was difficult. Just like activities, the write up is so critical. The form is just a beginning and should be used as a template to create your write up.

As we move into the summer, and the beginning of another fraternal year, it’s time to plan your family picnic, day at the ballpark, family bike ride, or other family activity. We all look forward to summer so we can spend time with the family. Help out your council members by giving them something fun to do with their families. How about the council buy some flowers for the families to plant at the home of a parish shut-in? What about a day at the nursing home? Something as simple as a group hike and potluck at a local state park or wildlife area. The Holy Family icon is still traveling the state. If it hasn’t been to your district yet, start planning now for when it comes. It’s never too early to reserve it with your district deputy. The Holy Family is our perfect example of family unity and love. Go beyond the prayer service and plan something special when you have it. Finally, I have one humble request. While you are planning events for the coming fraternal year, schedule an event to

celebrate and strengthen the marriage bond or to support and unite the fathers in your council and your parish. Many times we forget that the core of a happy family is a strong, faithful marriage. Marriage is not a civil union that can be regulated by the U.S. court system. Marriage is a sacramental bond between a man and a woman. It is a promise to die to one’s self so you may live for another. Society has forgotten that. Sometimes we forget that. Married couples get so caught up in the “trees” of work, dishes, bills, drop this kid off, pick that kid up, etc. that we lose the “forest” of living for our spouse. We forget to make our spouse smile and laugh or just say “How are you doing?” Schedule an event that reminds couples of their sacramental bond and celebrates the strength of true marriage. It could be as simple as a renewal of marriage vows at the end of mass. It could be a boxed marriage support series. It could be a

Culture of Life Gary Anderson

As we wrap up the fraternal year, I'll share a heartwarming news item, courtesy of Ohio Right to Life, as well as details on the upcoming 2016

Fortnight for Freedom.

Ohio Senate Passes Bill Protecting Aborted

Babies from Landfills

On May 25, the Ohio Senate approved S.B. 254, the Unborn Child Dignity Act, (23-10) requiring aborted babies to be individually buried or cremated. Sponsored by State Senator Joe Uecker (R-Miami Township), this legislation follows the 2015 Planned Parenthood scandals that raised questions about how the abortion industry treats the remains of unborn babies following abortion. In December, Attorney General Mike DeWine's investigation into Ohio's Planned Parenthood abortion facilities revealed that the entity is contracting with companies that dispose of aborted babies in landfills.

Fortnight for Freedom

June 21-July 4

From June 21 to July 4, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) will host its annual Fortnight for Freedom under the theme “Witnesses to Freedom.” In support of this theme, the USCCB will highlight 14 men and women around the world who bear witness to authentic freedom in Christ.

As faithful Catholic American citizens, I encourage your council to work with your pastors to be fully engaged in this special celebration. For suggestions on simple activities, please visit the USCCB’s Fortnight for Freedom website. Additionally, you are encouraged to share the USCCB-produced 10-minute video on the importance of religious liberty that is available on the website. This could be done at a council meeting or as part of a larger parish or community celebration of the fortnight.

You can also order Knights of Columbus religious freedom signs (13”x 20”) for use at any rallies or marches for religious freedom sponsored by your council or held in your area. The signs say “Respect Religious Freedom” (#10041) and “Defend the First Amendment” (#10042). Order online at Knights Gear or send a Supply Requisition (Form #1) by mail or fax (1-800-266-6340) to the Supply Department. The cost is $10 per 100 signs, which includes shipping and handling. By participating in the Fortnight for Freedom, your council satisfies Activity #46 in the state Culture of Life activities program. See page 64 of the General Program Book.

In closing, this is also the time to be planning for three important fall events:

National Day of

Remembrance for Aborted Children on Saturday, September 10 (abortionmemorials.com), Activity #50.

40 Days for Life (40daysforlife.com) from September 28-November 6, Activity #47

Respect Life Month in October (www.usccb.org/about/pro-life-activities/respect-life-program). Although this is not a separate Culture of Life activity, councils can sponsor activities to celebrate Respect Life Month and/or Respect Life Sunday on October 2 and report them as Council Choices #53 or #54.

couples only dinner when you recognize the longest and most recent marriages. Be creative but celebrate the special sacramental bond that is marriage. Over the past 50 years and especially the last 20 years, the role of the father has been under attack. Ward Cleaver was respected and his opinion valued. John Walton and Charles Ingalls were not always right but they were always respected. Homer Simpson is an irresponsible fool. Tom, the father on Nickelodeon’s Nicky, Ricky, Dicky, and Dawn, is the butt of most jokes. Today, the fathers on most shows are portrayed as irrational, self-serving overgrown children or; he is a complete buffoon who is belittled by his wife and occasionally the children. Somewhere along the way Dad stopped being portrayed as the leader of the family and the voice of reason. Society tells young women “children don’t need a father” while telling young men “children aren’t your problem” and “you’re incapable of raising them”. As fathers, we need to support other fathers, especially young fathers. Fatherhood isn’t easy and it’s complicated by the idea that it’s “unmanly” to discuss the troubles of fatherhood. I ask that you schedule an event (a retreat, a boxed series, a monthly discussion) during the next fraternal year that brings fathers together to support and encourage each other. Your local priest might have some ideas or suggestions. The local crisis pregnancy ministry may offer father’s classes and be willing to help. Use the resources that are available to make it easier on you and more fulfilling for the participants. Last fraternal year was a great learning experience for me. It was encouraging to see the number of reports and the variety of activities the Knights of Columbus are doing throughout Ohio. I am looking forward to the coming fraternal year and am excited to read about the great family activities your councils report!!!

Community Tom Forsthoefel We are in the last month of the fraternal year. Has your council completed all of its goals this year? It is not too late to finish out the fraternal year by getting all of your council’s final plans checked off your “to-do” list. The foremost item to complete is the recruitment of new members all the way to the end of June, even if your council has accomplished star council numbers for the year. You can always have an extra one or two in the event a member wishes to terminate his membership with the Knights. Ending the fraternal year on a high note will help your council get a jump start on the next year as well. Bringing in a new member at this time not only helps your council with additional membership totals, but also brings in a member with new ideas to help your council with new charity works for helping those less fortunate within your community. As we move to the end of June every council should be looking for members willing to jump start the next fraternal year. Council officers and directors for the upcoming year will be needed to continue the great programs already in place by our Worthy State Deputy, Robert E. Collins Jr. All brother knights throughout the State of Ohio should be putting individual efforts into the state program of “Through Him, With Him, In Him” in completing the council’s final efforts for the end of the year. You’re A Click Away—State Website Bob Gilliland Printing out and Submitting the Council 185 and 365 Forms!!! This month, Council Financial Secretaries and Council Grand Knights can begin processing their Form 185 (Report of Officers), and Form 365 (Service Program Personnel) forms on the State website. Council Financial Secretaries and Council Grand Knights will have access to a special Council Administrative Forms section on the State website.

Council Financial Secretaries will see a “CFS” after their name designating them as Council Financial Secretaries on the State website.

Conversely, Council Grand Knights will see a “CGK” after their name designating them as Council Grand Knights on the State website. Council Financial Secretaries will have access to the Form 185 (Report of

Officers) and the Council Grand Knight will have access to the Form 365 (Service Program Personnel). The Council Financial Secretary will also have access to the Form 365 to help assist the Council Grand Knight, if need be. The Form 185 (Report of Officers) The Council Financial Secretary will see a screen like the one below that will allow selection of any member in the Council roster to fill the elected position. Start the process by clicking on the Officers Election Date and select the date of the Council Election of Officers from the calendar date picker that pops up.

Select the appropriate Officer from the dropdown list for each officer position in your Council. As you change the officers, you will see a red notice at the bottom that the data has changed. Not to worry, it is a safeguard for you to let you know that something was changed. If a particular office is unfilled (no one is elected to that position and it is empty), simply leave it at the “-- Please Select --” option and the position will remain unfilled when the form is printed. When all of the Council officers have been entered into the State website, click “Save Form” on the bottom of the page so that the selected information can be stored in the State Website. This is important because the forms are generated from the saved data.

If at any time an officer is changed, even if it is clicked on the “Print Form” and “Submit Form to Supreme” buttons will be hidden and a message reminding the user to save the information will be displayed (see next image). You need to simply click the "Save Form" button and the buttons will become visible again. You can save the form and come back to it at any time in the future. The website will remember what officer you have selected for a particular office and you can continue filling the form in when you come back to it at a later time.

Once the data has been saved, click on “Print Form” and after a few seconds, a PDF document will download to your computer for you to print off and keep for your records. When the “Submit Form to Supreme” button is pressed, the same PDF that is generated in the “Print Form” will be electronically emailed to Supreme Council, the State Council, your District Deputy, and to the Council Financial Secretary. The nice thing about this new system is that the “Submit Form to Supreme” can be repeated, without having to enter the data again. The saved data will be used for the report. This also make is easier to submit a new form partway in the fraternal year is any officer position changes. This system is an important step in building up the Council Officers for the State Directory and keeping it current with up-to-date information about the Council and its officers. The Form 365 (Service Program Personnel) Report Just like the Form 185, the Service Program Personnel report conveys information about who in the Council is in charge of the various service programs like the Council General Program director, the Church, Community, Council, Youth, Membership, and Retention directors. This is normally submitted by the Grand Knight as he appoints the various service personnel. The Financial Secretary will have access to this form to help the Grand Knight if need be.

As of this writing, 15 Financial Secretaries have completed the Form 185 and 4 of them have completed the Form 365. We are off to a great start! Please feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have any questions.
