THOUGHTS OF PASTOR FATHER JONES

My Daddy Is Here!

David Elkind, a psychologist, tells the story of visiting his middle son's nursery school class, at the request of his teacher. She wanted him to observe a "problem child" in the class. While he was there, he caught a conversation between his son and some other boys. Their conversation went like this.

Child A: "My daddy is a doctor and he makes lots of money and we have a swimming pool." Child B: "My daddy is a lawyer and he flies to Washington and talks to the president." Child C: "My daddy owns a company and we have our own airplane."

Then David Elkind's boy said, "My daddy is here!" And he proudly looked in his father's direction.

As we celebrated Mother’s Day, I examined in my sermon the idea of being “Living Stones.” Dr. Elkind’s little story reminds us of the importance of being present for those we love. In today’s world that has become more challenging. Many things draw at our time and our energy. But actually being present in other’s lives has greater value than all the things that we can give. Further, actually being present, is more than simply being in the room. It means that we are engaged with the other; actively listening to them; deeply concerned about their needs and issues.

The miracle of the Gospel is that God is such a father. For some, God is an all-powerful being that created the world (and us) and then stepped back to watch from afar. But Jesus demonstrates that our God is one who chooses to walk among his people; to be beside us in every situation; to listen to all our prayers. God is truly present with us. He is our Rock!

Being living stones reminds us that we are called to be his living presence in the world. As He is our Rock, we are to be smaller rocks for those around us: our families, our communities, and our world. I must admit that I rarely feel like a rock. In fact, I seldom even feel like a stone. Most of the time, I feel more like a pebble. But even a pebble provides something God can build upon.

When a road or driveway is repaved, the first layer was one of small gravel – the pebbles. But together, those pebbles became the base for the new road which can support hundreds of cars. We should not despair even if we are but small pebbles for together we can support great endeavors.

This Father’s Day, remember who you are. You are God’s living presence. You are God’s living stones. People will build their lives upon you. God will build his kingdom upon you.

Blessings and love, Doug

GOOD NEWS Article from the Frederick Memorial Hospital

Website: http://www.fmh.org/News-Calendar/News/2017/May/Dick-and-Sue-Basford-Named-2017-FMH-Good-Samarit.aspx

Dick and Sue Basford were named Frederick Memorial Hospital’s 2017 Good Samaritans of the Year at a recognition event on May 3 for some of the hospital’s most generous benefactors. First presented in 1991, the FMH Good Samaritan of the Year award recognizes individuals whose lives have demonstrated “actions or achievements that have substantially advanced patient care, the economic health of the hospital, or the physical safety of its patients and personnel, as well as a selfless commitment to improving the quality of life in the entire Frederick community.” Dick and Sue Basford were presented with the award in honor of their shared lifetime of community service and philanthropy. Longtime members of the hospital’s Order of the Good Samaritan, the Basfords are also active members of the FMH Auxiliary, contributing a combined total of well over 7,000 hours of direct patient and administrative service. A native Fredericktonian, Dick Basford graduated from Frederick High School and continued his education at the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. After graduating in 1969, he accepted employment with Etchison Funeral Home. After the retirement of A. Hart and Marjorie Etchison in 1971, Dick Basford became part owner of the funeral home with Frank R. Smith, Donald M. Fadeley and Robert W. Keeney. He retired in 2007. Sue Basford began her career as a Home Economics teacher at Brunswick High School. She took a job as a teacher at Evangelical Lutheran Church’s Wee Folk School, eventually becoming its director. Years later, she continued her career as an educator when she accepted a part-time position as an English as a Second Language (ESOL) instructor at Yellow Springs Elementary. Dick served on the Board of the Frederick County Commission on Aging and the Frederick County March of Dimes-- for many years serving as the co-chair of their annual fundraising walk-a-thon. He was a longtime member of the Frederick Jaycees, president of the Catoctin Club and an officer of the Lions Club—including nearly 20 years as its Sight Conservation Chairman. He currently serves on the Community Foundation of Frederick County’s scholarship committee, and volunteers at the Community Action Agency and Frederick Rescue Mission. Sue Basford was one of the founding members of the FMH Cancer Patient Assistance Fund, a resource for local men and women who need help affording medications, nutritional supplements and other items associated with their diagnosis of cancer. She is a member of the Women’s Giving Circle of Frederick, an at-large member of the Frederick Rescue Mission Board of Directors, and has served as a Board member and volunteer at the Record Street Home. “In addition to giving generously of their time and resources to Frederick Memorial Hospital, Dick and Sue have spent countless hours volunteering on behalf of some of our community’s most vulnerable members,” said local businessman and FMH Special Gifts Committee Chair Daniel Schiffman. “Both have focused their efforts on improving the lives of mothers, children and families, the elderly, the sick and the less advantaged. As one of their nominators put it, ‘they are the epitome of what it means to be community servants.’”

Dana R. Rosato graduated from Northeastern University in Boston, MA with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Dana is the daughter of David and Mary Beth Rosato of Avon, CT and the granddaughter of Bob and Margaret Rosato. Dana will be

working in the Pediatric ICU at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Quinn E. Waxter graduated from Linganore High School. He is the son of Ruth and Scott Waxter and grandson of Sandy and Joe Sayko. He was involved in the National, math, and science honor societies, a member of the track, football and wrestling teams, and Student Government association. He attended the Johns Hopkins applied physics lab and will attend the University of Maryland majoring in physics.

Siena Tauraso, granddaughter of Loretta Newton, graduated from Middletown High School. Siena will attend Frederick Community College in the fall, hoping to one day be an astronomer.

GREETINGS FROM CHURCH COUNCIL On May 9, council met for their monthly meeting. It was a short meeting with the main focus on extending a call to Kimberly Hintzman. All members received a post card in the mail for the special congregational meeting.

On May 20 & 21, the congregation voted to call Kim Hintzman as Director of Engagement at ELC. There were a total of 237 votes. 210 voted yes and 27 voted no. Deacon Kim has accepted the call and will continue here at ELC.

The improvements for the Traver Center have been completed. With these improvements, the Backpack ministry and dinner church will be better able to use the facility. The improvements allow the Backpack ministry to make packing efficient and get the backpacks out to the children quicker. Dinner Church will be able to prepare, cook, and serve their meals in the Traver Center rather than having to utilize Rupp House for their cooking needs. This will greatly improve their efficiency and the ability for more people to help out and attend.

The next Council Meeting is on Tuesday, June 13 at 7 pm in the Schaeffer Center, Shepherd’s Chapel.

NOTEWORTHY NEWS By: Brenda Weiser

Music Appreciation Sunday

We will recognize the amazing music program here at ELC on Sunday, June 4 at all services. From the traditional choirs to the bells to the praise team. Join us in the celebration!

Organ Project Begins in July

The approved organ project will start on Monday, July 10, and hopefully will take about four weeks to finish. The upper swell chest will be removed as well as some pipework below it to get the swell pipes out. The organ will probably be quite marginalized with this process, so we will rely on piano during the weeks that the organ is down for worship.

Women’s and Men’s Ensembles The end of August--the time of year that we enjoy the Men’s and Women’s Ensembles singing during the worship services. A Men’s Ensemble will sing for services the weekend of August 19/20 at the 6 pm, 8 am, and 11 am services. Rehearsals are set for Tuesday, August 15, and Thursday, August 17. All rehearsals will be at 7:30 pm in the choir room. A Women’s Ensemble will sing for services the weekend of August 26/27 for the 6 pm, 8 am, and 11 am services. Rehearsals are set for Tuesday, August 22 and Thursday, August 24. Rehearsals begin at 7:30 pm in the choir room. These groups are open to anyone, so come and have a great time singing with others! Please, contact Brenda Weiser at 301-663-6361 x123 or [email protected] if you are interested. Since there are only 2 rehearsals for each group, your

attendance at both rehearsals is required. Come have some fun!

Ring in Summer

Registration deadline is Sunday, June 18. Anyone who

would like to ring a bell or a chime just for fun will have the opportunity this summer. For four Thursday evenings in July, third graders through middle schoolers may ring chimes and high schoolers through senior citizens will ring bells. No knowledge of music is required, just a desire to ring and enjoy the fun of sharing together in music. Paige Clark will lead the chimers group and Anne Wallis will lead the bell group. The chimers will meet in the choir room and the bells will be in the sanctuary. The schedule is 6:15 to 7:30 pm on July 6, 13, 20, 27. Why not make this a family venture?

Contact Anne Wallis at [email protected] or visit www.twinspires.org/music to sign up.

PARISH NURSE: Power Outage

By: Nancy Fowler Summer is the time for storms and loss of power. Be prepared. Here are some tips from the American Red Cross during a Power Outage:

Staying Safe Indoors

Use flash lights in the dark, not candles.

Eliminate unnecessary travel, especially by car. Traffic lights will be out and roads will be congested.

If you are using a generator be sure you understand the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning and how to use generators safely.

Food Safety

Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. An unopened refrigerator will keep foods cold for about 4 hours. A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed.

First use perishable food from the refrigerator. Perishables should have a temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius) or below to be safe to eat. Then use food from the freezer.

Use your non-perishable foods and staples after using food from the refrigerator and freezer.

If it looks like the power outage will continue beyond a day, prepare a cooler with ice for your freezer items.

Keep food in a dry, cool spot and keep it covered at all times.

Electrical Equipment

Turn off and unplug all unnecessary electrical equipment, including sensitive electronics.

Turn off or disconnect any appliances (like stoves), equipment or electronics you were using when the power went out. When power comes back on, surges or spikes can damage equipment.

Leave one light turned on so you’ll know when the power comes back on.

Staying Safe After a Power Outage

If electrical power lines are down, don’t touch them. Keep your family and pets away. Report downed lines to your utility company.

Throw Out Unsafe Food

Throw away any food (particularly meat, poultry, fish, eggs and leftovers) that has been exposed to temperatures higher than 40° F (4° C) for 2 hours or more, or that has an unusual odor, color or texture. When in doubt, throw it out!

Never taste food or rely on appearance or odor to deter-mine its safety. Some foods may look and smell fine, but if they have been at room temperature too long, bacteria causing food-borne illnesses can start growing quickly. Some types of bacteria produce toxins that cannot be destroyed by cooking.

If you are not sure food is cold enough, take its temperature with a food thermometer.

If food in the freezer is colder than 40° F and has ice crystals on it, you can refreeze it.

MO’D NOTE: Pathway of Surrender

Worship me by living close to Me. This was my original de-

sign for man, into whom I breathed My very breath of life. This is my desire for you: that you stay near Me as you walk along your life-path. Each day is an important part of that journey. Although you may feel as if you are going nowhere in this world, your spir-itual journey is another matter altogether, taking you along steep, treacherous paths of adventure. That is why walking in the Light of My Presence is essential to keep you from stumbling. By staying close to Me, you present yourself as a living sacrifice. Even the most routine part of your day can be a spiritual act of worship, holy and pleasing to Me. [Jesus Calling, Sarah Young]

Surrender The browns, reds, golds and yellows lay scattered, Falling victims of a shifting sun. The hum and steady moan of 2 revolving rubber tires Grasping the ground ahead, extending outwards, Laying their rider’s own claim to an obscuring path. Lake water ripples, beat upon in multiple wind-swept Patterns and layers; Above, grey-black canopies of clouds slowly stream across A comforting breeze-guided path. The air: crisp, lively, mesmerizingly cool As she plays through the arms of leafing trees, Retiring along the rocky banks adjacent to the gravel path. Late afternoon is foreclosing into the lengthening shadows Of evening, Carving the retreating light into its surrendering path. Paths to somewhere, anywhere & nowhere; Paths to test the mettle of each destined human; Paths whose correctness of choice bears the weight Of honesty & of self-knowledge. Beautiful, dying mystery of yearning and summons To a quiet, hushed knowledge of oneself and the tempers That preclude approaching night. The groan of all nature as it prepares to yield To its determined path—in Hope….

1. Read Rom. 8:18-27. How do the ideas of groaning, surrender

and Hope enter into your life? 2. How has nature opened up pathways for you to experience

God more fully?

Shalom. Under His Mercy, MO’D

I’ve been so blessed to have such wonderful family and friends. This has been expressed by you in celebrating my 90th birthday with beautiful cards, flowers, gifts, hugs, and kissed of love. My heartfelt thanks to all who were a part of any of these. I pray for our continued love and friendship.

Fondly, Caroline Feaga

STEPHEN MINISTRY When a loved one is approaching death, friends and family members struggle with what they should do and what they should say. During their continuing education this month, our Stephen Ministers are focusing on ministry to those who are dying and their families and friends. ELC’s Stephen Ministers are trained and ready to provide confidential one-to-one Christian care to anyone facing this or any of life’s other challenges.

A Stephen Minister will listen, care, encourage, and pray with and for you. If you or someone you know is hurting, find out more about Stephen Ministry contact the church office, one of our pastors or deacons or one of our Stephen Leaders: Nancy Fowler (301-845-2629), Leslie Hobbs (301-304-5465), and Marcie Stutzman (301-371-7813). Our Stephen Ministers are ready to care for you, your family and friends!

CALLING ALL CRAFTERS AND ARTISANS! Social’s Ministry’s Books&MORE Boutique will be held Saturday, October 7, from 9 am to 7 pm. All proceeds from the donations will go to Operation Second Chance and SHIP. We will spotlight ELC members’ donated items as well as our ELC Vendors like Mike O’Donnell with his pottery creations and our Twin Spires Quilters. We are hopeful that others of our vendors will be able to participate this year as well.

This past year we found that costume jewelry was a popular item so if you have costume jewelry you are willing to share, please contact Anne Wallis [email protected] to let her know. We would love to have it.

With so many talented artisans amongst us, it would be wonderful if you would volunteer to host a workshop to teach others a new specialty or donate something you have made. There is seed money available for this ministry.

Any of you who have items to share that you have made or will make, please let Anne know.

Some popular items are:

Scrubbies Baby blankets, caps, layettes Paintings
