Isaiah 46:4

Even to your old age I will be the same, And even to your graying years I will bear you! I have done it, and I will carry you; And I will bear you and I will deliver you.

Leviticus 19:32

'You shall rise up before the grayheaded and honor the aged, and you shall revere your God; I am the LORD.

1 Timothy 5:1-2

Do not sharply rebuke an older man, but rather appeal to him as a father, to the younger men as brothers, the older women as mothers, and the younger women as sisters, in all purity.

1 Peter 5:5

You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one an-other, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.

Planning an Event at the Church?

Contact the Church Office to Schedule!

Are you planning an event at the Church? If so, PLEASE remember to call the church office and make sure to get on the calendar ASAP. This means BEFORE you make plans, invite people, advertise, etc... The church building is getting increasingly busy through-out the week and we’d like to avoid embarrassing double-bookings. Thanks so much!!

The German Church Delegation - October 24-November 1

We have most of our host families for the German Church delegation that will be visiting us this Fall (Oct. 24th-Nov. 1st). However, If you have space in your home to host 1 or 2 adults, please speak to Pastor Rob before October for the details. Thanks!

Mission & Outreach at Grace

Grace UCC Volunteers Needed

for Emergency Family Shelter hosted by Grace

August 11th through August 18th

As always, we are looking for individuals to partner with us in providing a safe place for homeless families. In addition to our usual evening volunteers, we are in need of one or two individuals who would be willing to assist Carol Garrison in opening the church for our families and volunteers. Unlocking doors, being available to welcome families as they arrive, assisting the volunteers to set-up, and locking up after everyone is settled in. This would be from about 5:30 to 7:00 in the evening. All volunteers must be vetted and trained, so if you have not yet signed up, please see Carol Garrison or Sarah Travis for information. If you have already been through the training process, get yourself on the schedule. She will be happy to walk-through the process with you. We are next hosting the Emergency Family Shelter August 11th through August 18th

and again November 10th through 17th. Thank you!

For Emergency Human Needs

Grace UCC Collects Basic Household Items

for Emergency Family Shelter

Grace has an opportunity to support the RCEHN’s Emergency Family Shelter in a new

way. Like all households (and RCEHN does have a home base just off Bentz St. where meals are fixed; belongings are stored; clothes are washed and instruction is given) there are continuing needs for the “little things” (paper towels, detergent, bath soap, etc.). We’d like to collect these items in July and deliver them in August (our next hospitality month).

There will be a cutout house on an easel near the sanctuary with a large basket underneath and small tags within the house with needs items, such as: 2 rolls paper towels; 8 oz. soft scrub, etc. You may take a tag, purchase the item(s), and then bring the items back and place in the basket for collection. Contact Carol Garrison for more info. Or visit https://www.thereligiouscoalition.org/support-us/supply-needs/

Thank you in advance for your ongoing support!

Mission, Outreach, and Volunteer Opportunities:

Sunday, August 19 - FREDERICK COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY’S SOUP KITCHEN: Volunteers from Grace Church serve at the Soup Kitchen on the 3rd Sunday of even months. It's a rewarding mission experience and we always have fun. Our next ser-vice date is October 21. Won't you join us?

Frederick FoodBank. On the third Sunday of every month, we dedicate the “Grace Groceries” that have been collected in our little red wagon (in the narthex), and then deliver them to the Frederick Foodbank. Thank you for your continued gener-osity!

Religious Coalition’s (RCEHN) Emergency Family Shelter is hosted by Grace Church four times a year. New volunteers to the program are always welcome! Volunteers must be over the age of 18, and a background check is required. Please contact the church office or speak to Sarah Travis for an application.

The Good Samaritan Fund of Grace Church is designated for emergency relief to members and friends of Grace Church. Only the pastor and person in need know who receives assistance. Donations to the fund are welcome at any time, in any amount. If you can help, please place a check in the offering plate made out to Grace Church with "Good Samaritan Fund" on the memo line. Thank you!

This month's readings are all over the place as we begin the longest stretch of the year: Com-mon Time. But two things stood out at me as worthy of our atten-tion. I Samuel and Revelation. I

Samuel is a fun book to read because it is the history of Israel. The call of David as King and all the escapades of the Davidic Kingdom, worthy of its own daytime soap opera! There is mystery and intrigue, adultery and murder. Days of our Lives "ain't got noth-ing" on I Samuel! Revelation is a book that is just as fun to read if you can think of it as a book of hope rather than a "scare you into Heaven" reading. Revelation is often seen as a book of prophesies of the end of the world and the horror than will ensue. With its 6 headed beasts and secret codes, Revelation has been used to keep people in line and to read the newspaper with an eye on how close the end is. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth! Modern biblical scholarship teaches that Revelation is really a book of code for the early church that lived in terrible persecution. It is a book of hope for people whose faith meant almost daily threats of torture and imprison-ment. And every generation has read Revelation with an eye to how it applies to their time because every generation has had its share of persecuted people. Bottom line, we are NOT necessarily the last generation and we don;t know how any of these readings reflect ours or any other generation on earth. but what we do know is this: Whatever tribulation life may bring our way, personally or as a nation, Revelation teaches is that in the end....God wins! Thats the message for a persecuted Church: In the end...God wins. That's the message to a woman facing divorce or a family in poverty or a person facing cancer. The only thing that will ever win in the end is GOD. Enjoy!

St Bernard of Clairvaux

Feast Day: August 20 Born: 1090 :: Died: 1153

Bernard was born in Dijon, in France. He had six brothers and sisters and they were very well educated. He was only 17 years old when his mother died and his heart was broken.

His lively sister Humbeline did not let him remain sad and she did whatever she could to cheer him up. Soon Bernard became a very popular man. He was handsome and intelli-gent, full of fun and good humor and people enjoyed being with him. Then one day, Bernard surprised all his friends by telling them he was going to join the very strict Cistercian order and become a Priest. They did all they could to make him give up the idea. But in the end, Bernard convinced his brothers, an uncle and twenty-six friends to join him. As Bernard and his brothers left their home, they said to their little brother Nivard, who was playing with other children: "Good-bye, little Nivard. You will now have all the lands and property for yourself." But the boy answered: "What! How can all of you go to heaven and leave me here on earth? Do you call that fair?" And when Nivard was older he too joined his brothers in the monastery. St. Bernard became a very good monk. After three years, he was sent to start a new Cistercian monastery and to be its abbot. The new monastery was in the Valley of Light which in French is called "Clairvaux" and Bernard was the abbot there for the rest of his life. Although he would have liked to stay working and praying in his monastery, he was called out sometimes for special work. He preached, made peace between rulers, and went to advise the Pope. He also wrote beautiful spiritual books. He became very famous and people every-where had great respect for him. But he did not want fame. More than anything else Bernard wanted to be a monk and be close to God.

This saint had a great devotion to the Mary, the Virgin. It is said that when he passed her statue, he often greeted her with a "Hail Mary." One day, it legend says that the Blessed Mother returned his greeting: "Hail, Bernard!" and, Bernard believed this was Mary’s way to show how much his love and devotion pleased her. Bernard was famous for his reforms of the Church and his humility. Having been offered a bishopric on several occasions, Bernard refused preferring to remain a simple Monk and to see God’s spirit reform the Church in other ways. Bernard died on August 20th 1153.
