Local residents’ photography displayed with Ansel Adams exhibition opening June 1 at The Mariners’ MuseumNEWPORT NEWS, Va.– Beginning June 1, 2013, the photography of two Smithfield residents share the spotlight with the likes of Ansel Adams in Fragile Waters, a major exhibition at The Mariners’ Museum. Fragile Waters features the black-and-white marine photography of Adams and living legends Ernest H. Brooks II and Dorothy Kerper Monnelly.
Carrollton resident Shirley Whitenack’s photograph of a large cypress tree standing in the Edenton Bay in North Carolina, titled “Stately Cypress,” has been selected to display as part of the Fragile Waters Community Photography Show. The show is a complement to The Mariners’ Museum’s Fragile Waters exhibition, which features photography by some of the world’s greatest marine photographers.
“I feel the lone cypress rising from the water represents strength and endurance,” Whitenack said. “It also is a testament to the people of Edenton to not cut it down to make water navigation easier.” Whitenack’s entry shows water as “a delicate resource we sometimes abuse but without we cannot live,” she said.
The Edenton Bay in North Carolina was a popular site for photography for the Community Photography Show. Smithfield resident Baron Poole’s entry, “Edenton Morn” depicts the same tree, this time surrounded by fog in the early morning hours.
“The fog on the water prompts vivid memories as a young boy growing up near the San Francisco waterfront. For some unknown reason the fog on the water has always seems to surround me with the feeling of safekeeping,” Poole said.
The Community Photography Show accepted a total of 95 submissions of 8x10 black-and-white water images from the public which are displayed in proximity to Fragile Waters. Throughout the exhibit’s lifespan, the public will vote on its favorite photographs and winners will be selected at the end of the summer. Check out Shirley’s exhibit at the

Mariners’ Museum Chief Curator Lyles Forbes said the Museum was impressed with the quality of the submissions. “The images submitted from all around Hampton Roads reflect the wonderful diversity water can be as a source of artistic inspiration,” Forbes said.
Fragile Waters includes images by the 20th century’s preeminent photographer, Ansel Adams, as well as underwater photographer Ernest H. Brooks II and marshlands chronicler Dorothy Kerper Monnelly.
Fragile Waters employs a different tact in showcasing images of the world’s waterways, forgoing color in favor of dramatic black-and-white photography. The exhibition was developed against the backdrop of the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill and the 2011 events at Fukushima, Japan, with the aim of highlighting the beauty, power and vulnerability of our greatest natural resource.
Fragile Waters features 117 images, with subject matters ranging from an aquifer under Death Valley, to the waterfalls of Yosemite, to a stories-tall wall of ice in Antarctica.
Adams’ renowned photography of the American West became the face of the wilderness. Many credit him with the acceptance of photography as fine art. He was not only a photographer, but also a respected conservationist and teacher. Brooks is the son of the founder of the famed Brooks Institute of Photography, in Santa Barbara, Calif., which Brooks led for many years. Called “the master of light in the sea,” Brooks has been a trailblazer in the development and technique of underwater photography. Monnelly has been called “the Ansel Adams of the wetlands” for her work in the Massachusetts Great Marsh, shooting with a 4x5 camera. She has also photographed in the lava fields of Hawaii, the California dessert, in Iceland and in Maine.
Fragile Waters, which was curated by Adams’ daughter-in-law Jeanne Adams, provides multiple ways to involve the community. In addition to the Community Photography Show, for which entries are now closed, there are a number of other Fragile Waters programs over the summer including a June 22 Pinhole Camera Workshop, a July 13 Sun Print Workshop and an Aug. 10 Photography Scavenger Hunt in the Park. Monnelly will lead a nature walk and gallery tour on June 29, and Brooks will offer a lecture on July 24, and a gallery tour on July 25.
