On Friday, April 8, 2011 volunteers delivered “The Economics for Success” a Junior Achievement program delivered by GE volunteers on an annual basis. This one-day program is taught to Grade 8 classes in the Peterborough area. The program is an activity-oriented program that teaches students that every opportunity is a stepping-stone for future success. The program focuses on four main themes: success, independence, opportunity, and future career planning. Through interactive games and discussion, the students are taught money management skills and the importance of staying in school.

Over 65%of participants indicate that Junior Achievement has a significant impact on staying in high school and enrolling in post-secondary education .

Here’s what they are saying about the Junior Achievement programs:

“This was a great experience and the mentors opened my eyes to the real world.”- Peterborough Grade 8 student

“I learned that living and paying for yourself is alot harder than kids think, you have to have a job that pays well.”- Peterborough Grade 8 student

“The [Economics of Success] program is extremely helpful for the students to go through. The practical examples that are worked through with the students throughout the daily activities clearly illustrate the benefits of striving for a good education and provide working exercises on items like budgeting and planning. The active two-way dialogue that occurs through the program allow the students to understand the benefits of developing skills as early as Grade 7, such as volunteer work, part-time work, building a resume and gathering references. It is a real eye opener for all students to hear examples from other students, teachers and the facilitator.” - Colin DeansCoordinator, Materials HandlingCameco Corporation. Fuel Services Division. Now entering my fifth year with Junior Achievement in this region I am pleased with the progress of the newly Incorporated Board, known now as Junior Achievement of Peterborough, Lakeland, Muskoka.

The Board of Directors is comprised of a cross section of knowledgeable successful business people that understand the importance of the JA message. The board will be lead by former Mayor Paul Ayotte as the Chair. His wealth of experience from being involved with our business community will ensure us continued success. Jamie Tompkins of TD Canada Trust remains on our board as Past Chair. Jamie has been a long time Junior Achievement mentor and supporter and will provide that important continuity.

We are pleased to be supported by diverse businesses and service clubs throughout our region that know JA programs are an important investment in our communities. It is mentors from these businesses and clubs that encourage students to look into the economic challenges of the future.. They are an inspiration to students and challenge them to explore the many different avenues in our global society.

Moving forward this year we will continue to work with our local school boards to ensure delivery of all program requests. We also look forward to expanding our program delivery to many rural communities and those under serviced areas in our region.

Consider joining us in a most worthwhile venture. We challenge you to inspire our future leaders.

Junior Achievement in Muskoka for 2010-11. This was our best year ever, and we are preparing for the 2011-12 school year with great anticipation! This year we will also be expanding our program area to include Parry Sound and the Burk’s Falls area.

Financial literacy, work readiness skills and entrepreneurship are all topics that are often covered in the media as necessary topics for students today. JA programs have been addressing these areas in our schools for many years. This past year we reached almost 1000 students in Muskoka, with the grade 8, grade 5, grade 3 and JA Titan the high school on line business simulation. Educators and parents tell us the programs are relevant as well as informative. Student feed back is not only positive but clearly indicates that they understand the value of continued education.

The success of JA programs would not be possible without the financial support of sponsors across Muskoka. Sponsors include local business and industry, service clubs and community members. Each program is delivered by a trained volunteer mentor. Their interaction with the students makes our programs meaningful as they share their business and personal expertise, educational experiences and provide hands on learning to the students. This year we were fortunate to add many new sponsors and volunteers to our JA community in Muskoka.

Thanks to so many community minded businesses and volunteers interested in the welfare of our local students, we look forward to another great year in our Muskoka schools.

“Junior Achievement does a great job of communicating the importance of the free enterprise system to students. They learn that nothing much happens until something is sold, and that a career in business is a great career choice.”
