Background Justin Timberlake is an American actor and singer-songwriter who

began his music career in the late 1990’s where he was one of the two lead vocalists part of a boy band ‘N sync. The group was financed by Lou Pearlman and launched in Germany by BMG Ariola Muinch. In total the group created five albums:

*NSYNC(1997), Home for Christmas(1998), The Winter Album(1998), No Strings Attached(2000), Celebrity(2001).

The group had many songs that were part of the top five. They were nominated eight time for the Grammy awards. However Nsync decided to take a break from their music career after they had released their new album ‘Celebrity’. They decided that they would get back together later on the year but because Timberland wanted to concentrate on his solo career they never got a chance to get together.

Justin Timberlake then started to pursue his solo music career with his first album being Justified(2002) which then lead to FutureSex/LoveSounds (2006). He was from then known as a successful artist being that he sold over seven million albums and his songs being number one on the chart list. From the year 2007, Timberlake decided to take action in acting and put his music career to the side for a while. In the year 2013, Justin brought a great comeback with the album The 20/20 Experience and The 20/20 Experience:2 of 2 in which became the best selling albums of the year. Website

The layout and style of Timberlake’s website is very simple and neat reflecting the pop genre. However is slightly unconventional due to the colour scheme being black and white; having the text white against black background really gets your attention to the text. The image that is presented illustrates the pop genre due to the prop of a microphone being used with a background of flashing bright lights. The website is consistent to his latest album as the colour scheme in both are black and white. The website consists of the links for; news, music, tour, film & TV, brands, media and store where merchandise can be consumed by his fans. There is a ‘follow’ link as well as a ‘sign-up for the newsletter’ which allows his fans to be up to date with him.

Consistency

His social media sites are always being updated by new posts as well as youtube videos being posted and his website being updated. His website and social sites are consistent in the fact that they follow the style/theme of his latest album The 20/20 Experience; the whole black and white theme and the use of shots of him holding a microphone in concerts.

Album Artwork

Front Covers

On most of his album covers the main focus is him. The front cover of his album is usually a close-up or a mid-shot, of him, following the general pop convention. However on his latest album being ‘The 20/20 Experience’ his face isn’t clearly seen, due to the eye test lenses covering half his face, which contradicts the convention. Although you can not see the artist clearly people, especially his fans, still recognized him due to his style and theme being black and white with gold typography.

All his albums are consistent in the fact that they have a theme colour of white and black either being the background, text or costume. The extended edition of ‘The 20/20 Experience had a gold typography connoting the professional and rich album this is as the colour gold usually signifies wealth.

Page 18: Justin timberlake cross media

The convention of a pop genre here is followed as the back cover consists of a track list on one side with the other half being a shot of the artist .

These two back covers contradict the convention of pop genre as they don’t consist of a shot of the artist

Back Cover

Justin Timberlake’s back cover of albums usually follow the conventions of back covers having a barcode in the corner, tracklist and record company. His back cover are consistent to the front cover of each album as the theme is followed. The back covers are also made as attractive as the front which connotes to me that he wants each side of his album to look good. In his latest album back covers the tracklist is presented in a film credits layout to express the film feel; maybe to show the relation between film and Timberlake to the audience of him being and actor and singer.

Album promotion

Timberlake's latest album ‘The 20/20 Experience’ promotional poster was consistent to the album due to the black and white image and gold typography. The poster isn't overly flashy, its simple and professional looking which has an interesting element as it brings a twist to his style and music compared to his other albums. This poster is promotional for the album as it is the front cover of the album except consists of information on the world tour. The centre of attention in this poster is the suit and bow tie amplifying his main song ‘Suit and Tie’. Having the black foreground on a white background really makes this whole poster bold and attractive. The text is legible and aligned well which gives flows with that smart professional theme.

“Suit and Tie’’ Analysis

On the opening of this music video it shows the luxury lifestyle Justin Timberlake is living with him having a cigar, drinking alcohol and relaxing as he is getting a massage.

The music video being in black and white immediately grabs the audience’s attention into watching the video and knowing what it is about. The monochrome connotes the music video being based in an era; the style of the music as well as mise-en-scene reflects upon this era. The music actually starts at this point where Justin Timberlake starts singing on a stage in front of a large audience.

Page 22: Justin timberlake cross media

From here the beat starts and the audience get the impression of this artist being a pop singer due to the style of the music being snappy catchy and jolly. Although the music video is pop genre based the convention has been contradicted due to the whole music video being monochrome. The setting being glamorous really defines the pop genre with the flashing bright lights; however he being dressed very smartly and classy contradicts the pop genre of being dressed like cheesy and bright.

The genre of the music video is demonstrated clearly through the stage performance of Justin Timberlake singing and dancing in a pop routine; the background dancers and him dancing in sync and in the same routine. As the dancing goes in sync with the music this shows a good relationship between the visuals and music. The women then join in the music video dancing in a similar routine reflecting the pop genre even though it is being illustrated in a classy suave way.

Page 23: Justin timberlake cross media

Throughout the music video there is a constant link to the visuals and lyrics as whenever he says ''And as long as I have my suit and tie'' the visuals show a shot of him wearing a suit and bow tie; the visuals here of the way he is dressed defines the songs title. Although he is constantly being surrounded by people the main focus is on him due to the way the lighting has been set and the camera angles of him being the centre of the frame therefore centre of attention. In a section of the song he says ''All pressed in black and white'' which links with the visuals of the whole music video being in black and white.

Page 24: Justin timberlake cross media

There is reference to looking through voueryism is illustrated as the girls that are dancing are performing in a sexual way dressed seductive, to look sexy, so that the music video appeals to men.

Intertextual reference is shown in this music video as parts of the music video reference the behind the scenes of making the song by showing the recording studio in which Timberlake is singing. This tells us as the audience that the music video is more of a music performance rather than being a narrative.

Page 25: Justin timberlake cross media

Throughout this video the old vintage feel is

expressed through the setting, costume and props such as big orchestra and the jazz music style. The pop genre is followed in some areas of this music video but isn't followed completely due to the theme of this music video however the dance moves really amplifies the pop feel. This music video is consistent to his album covers, album poster, website and other social sites due to the theme in all these being black and white and being a photo of him in a 'Suit and Tie' referencing this song.

Conclusion

Throughout Justin Timberlake's website, social media sites, album covers and music the image of him being a pop artist is expressed and illustrated through following some of the conventions. The theme of ‘The 20/20 Experience’ which is his latest album is consistent and shown in all his sites. He is consistent in keeping his fans up to date with him by posting as much as he can through his sites. He is a self promoter and doesn't’t like to be over the top with his style as seen in most of his areas. Through his work and style you can immediately tell that he is a mainstream due to him being a part of the music industry from young age and having a success in the music and film industry.
