Correspondents will improve tlio

chances of an cmly appearance of

their favors In proportion n9 theypractise brevity wbilo the SupremeCourt is sitting.

There should certainly be scats

reserved in the Supreme Court

chamber for all the members of thebar. This was not the case at the

opening of the present term, and itdid not look well to see barristerstrying to stand at ease in the crowd.

Ilisliop Fowler of San Franoiico, who has returned from i trip roundthe world, warns the Americansthat their exclusive laws will bringa war of vengeance from L'hina on

the United States. A Chinese princetold him that China's navy would lie

powerful enough in ten years toback a demand on the United Statesfor satisfaction. The Bishop underthe'iitflucncc of the bad scaring lie

has evi'dently received ha3 opened a

campaign of denunciation againstthe anti-Chine- legislation of theUnion, lie will probably find it thehardest task lie ever undertook tocommunicate a panic to his country-men on this matter. It is no child'splay to stampede sixty millions ofpeople.

Ex-Ki- Milan of Servia, in aninterview with the Vienna corres-

pondent of the Loudon Times, re-

ferred to reports that he regrettedhaving abdicated the crown, liesaid the Ministers would learn in

time that one of the political lessonswhich he had sought to. teach hiscountry was precisely this "how acrown may be laid down without re-

pining. A much needed lesson,"he added, "this is in a land wherethe struggles for olllce are so vio-

lent, and frequently so ignoble.Men whose hearts are wrung whenthey have to resign a Ministerialportfolio cannot understand that aSovereign should give up his crownwithout seeking afterwards to re-

cover it." He said lie simply spokethe truth when he declared that,'feeling unable and unwilling to govnem according to the radical ideas of

the majority, he would make way

for his son, "whom they could trainup to lie a King after their own

hearts."

SUITABLE FOR RESIDENCES.That portion of Punchbowl made

accessible by the Government roadrecently completed, and also theelevation connecting Punchbowl with

Tantalus, are well adapted for resi-

dences, and are sure ere long to ac-

quire value for such purpose. Thetemperature is lower and the atmos-

phere purer than in any part of thocity. The hottest day in Honoluluis agreeably cool in the localities in-

dicated. The panoramic view ofthe country below, including cityand sea,n..is- - an attractive feature. The soil is rich and abundant, andwater is the orrly element- - needed tomake it productive, indeed, lackof water seems to be about the onlyserious drawback, and this can be

overcome at no very heavy cost.

TROUBLE OH SHIPBOAp.The bark Jas. A. King sailed for

Puget Sound on Saturday, but re-

turned and anchored off port onSunday. A little trouble on boardwas the occasion of the vessel's put-

ting back.' The' second mate andone of the crew had quarrelled, andin the fight the latter camo off theworse. .On the bark's return howas taken to the' Queen's Hospitalwhere his woundst were dressed, 'hishead and body being found to boseverely battered. Himself andhome of his shipmates allege thathe was beaten with a belaying pin.He wanted Deputy Marshal Hop-kins, who went to sec him, to havethe second mate arrested, but up tonoon to-da- y did not comply with therequirement of swearing out a war-rant. Tho sailors on hoard ex-

pressed to Mr, Hopkins their willing-ness to put to sea again whencterthe matter is investigated. Whileon board the Deputy Marshal was in-

formed that before the quarrel withthe second mate tho man had beenthrough a fight with another Bailor. The second mate found him lyingon deck and ordered him to duly, and it was his refusal to obey whichled to the second light. A questionfor investigation, therefore, is whatproportion of his injuries did thesailor sustain in the fight with hiscomrade belorc lie engaged in com-bat with the second mate.

ARRIVAL OF BARK BANCA,

The British iron bark Banca,Captain B. Bacbcfow, arrived thismorning 1(58 days from Glasgowwith 800 tons general cargo, con-signed to Messrs. l' A. Schacfer &

Co., including !H0 tons steel rails,aud;800 tons of salt in transit forl'ugct Sound. The Banca sailedfrom Glasgow on April 22d. Onthe eighth day out, one of theeailors, Joseph Pool, n lad of aboutfifteen, fell overboard white stand-ing on the railing. Life buoys werethrown to him, but, owing to his In-ability to swim, ho sank in veryshort'whilc. Crossed the equatorin the Atlantic on May 28th, ,10 daysout. Since leaving, fine weatherwas had till latitude 30 S. wasreached, and frou there to 50 S.,rough weather of the very worstnature set in, doing more or lessilanmge to the vessel. The jibboomwas carried away.

Arrived off Cape Horn, Aug. 1th,104 days out. The weather was farbelter than that encountered between110 and liO deg. S. ; but cold weatherset in and for three successive daysthere were two inches ol ice on therigging on r aido of thevessel. The barometer stood onseveral occasions as low as 1.37 dog.The Captain considers it tho coldesthe had ever experienced. On reach-ing M) and 30 deg. S. again in thePacific, boisterous weather prevail-ed ; but it was not as severe as thatexperienced in the same latitude onthe Atlantic. Tho equator- - in thePacillo whs crossed on September14th, and from thence to port hadfor the most part very pleasantweather. The Banca is docked atthe Fort street wharf.

Captain Bacbcrow was here intho Banca in January, 188."i. On hi3present voyage, he had been re-

quested by the Director of the Ob-

servatory at Hamburg, who is apersonal friend of the Captain, totake a meteorological report of hisvoyage. He had been furnishedwith scientific instruments for thepurpose.

The nriiEtlc.Impulse which inspired the venture camefrom the ceramic display of Japnn ntt!i Centennial K.Viibltinn of 1870, andthe production still bears tho impress ofthat inilucnee. Afteran early imitative period tliefe condi.tlons, aided by the native inventivefaculty and tho ample capital nt com.ni.md, have developed nn American pot.tery which possesses marked originality.

The coloring in both grounds anddecorations is entirely underglazo, nndtlie production divides itself into threeclnsscs: "Cameo" or shell-tinte- ware.used lorllio table; ' Dull Finish," whosesuiface, while soft in texture and ecsilycleaned, has the appearance of being liu.?lii7.ed; and lastly, the most distinctiveclass of richly glazed ornamental work.

Thedisiiiiguibliliiginaiknf Kookwsodfaience in all thos-- classes is the decora, live quality of the color ground . Theirliirmontous blinding is cirefully slu-dk- d

Outside of Japan and China we donot know where any colors and glazesarc to be found liner than those whirl)come from the Uookwood Pottery. THE PIANO RECITAL.

Professor G. Sauvlet, a pianist, arrived from Japan Tuesday, Octo-ber 1st, and announced a piano re-

cital at the Y. M. C, A. hall for Sa-

turday evening, the 5th iust. Thoprogramme was published in Fri-day's Bulletin. Tho recital cameoff as announced, the professor hav-

ing the assistance of Miss F. J.Nolte. At eight o'clock, the houi'for commencing the recital therewere only twenty-on- o persons pre-

sent. Three others dropped in lateron. Xi is impossible to account forsuch a slim attendance, as therewere no other attractions and Prof.Sauvlet came with recommendationsof the highest order. It may havebeen that the charges for admission,81 nud 1.25, were too high. Cer-tainly, a larger audience shouldhave greeted tho professor, for lie isa pianist of much ability. Onedrawback was that the piano seem-ed too loud, but thi3 may bo ac-

counted for by Ihc empty appear-ance of the hall. Those who werefortunate enough to be present hada most "enjoyable treat,-- and.it isto bo hoped the professor will giveanother recital ere long. Wc mightsuggest to him here that if he doesthe admission fco should be lowered. It is the intention of Prof. Sauvletto locate in Honolulu as a teacherof the' voice, piano, violin, violon-cello, double bass, alto, etc. II o

has brought with him a number ofvery flattering testimonials fromJapan.

Tho recital opened with a fanta-al- a

fromTraviata, brilliantly playedby the profqssor. His technique isexcellent, and ho pobseses a finish-ed style and infused considerablewarmth into his numbers. ' A ga-

votte of his own composition show-ed originalit' and was charminglyplayed. During the evening thoprofessor rendered ten numbers, allof which proved him a pianist of thohighest ability. Applause followodeach number.

Miss F. .7. Nolle gave two songs,'Venetian Boat Song" and "Night-ingale's Trill" with much tusto andwas loudly applauded. BandmasterBorger played the accompaniments.

THE PUNCHBOWL HILL ROAD.

The other day a representative ofthe Buli.i-.ti- made a carriage tripover the Punchbowl hill road, andwas highly pleased with the drive, the road, and the views presentedto vision. The road ascends --fromtwo bides, uniting at the top, onenscen-io- n beginning at the Makikicemetery, and Hie other on Punch-bow- l

street, near the Mormonchurch. Naturally, to make themost of tho drive, people will ordin-arily go up one way and down theother. Tiie road makes a circuit ofthe crater at. the. top of the hill. Italso goes clear around the summiton which the saluting battery wasformerly placed. Near its highestelevation is a carriage stand, withhitching posts. The steepest gradeis comparatively easy, allowing onehorse with a moderate load to as-

cend without dilllculty. The roadis not macadamized, but Is coveredwith black sand instead. It isscarcely uecessary to add t hut theatmosphere through which thePunchbowl road passes is invigor-ating and the scenery opened toview enchanting.

Mr. John Sullivan, proprietor oftho Fashion Stables, who keeps goodhoi-3C- and carriages to correspond, drove a. party of four gentlemento the top of Punchbowl onFriday. John is Immensely de-

lighted with the road and tho beauti-ful sights it reveals to view, andtalks "Punchbowl" to everybody. It was his powerful eloquence th'atprevailed upon the paily to go onFriday. John's pair of' sleek bayswent the whole distance from Mer-chant street and back at a gentletrot, without distressing themselves,so easy is the grade. Tho party, some of whom had never been overthe road before, expressed theirpleasure and satisfaction iutenns ofglowiug enthusiasm. The engineer-ing skill manifest in the laying outof the road, the excellence, of theroadbed, ihe richness of the soil,,and tho magnificence of tho .ehang-in- g

view, all attracted admiring no-llc-

Tho trip, including a halt ofa fow minutes at tho summit, oc-

A SIMPLE PROMISE TO PAY.

1'nmi tho Xr.w Yonx Timks, .June :.':., 1859. t

Tho liipiitablo Life Assurance Society has adopted a new form ofpolicy which, like a bank draft, is a simple promise In pay without condi-tions on tho back.

Krolll till! OlMRAUO IXVr.STKllTOIt.l

Always on the alert, and ever anxious to givu the public tic; mostadvantageous contract in life insurance, the Bitillablc Life Assurance So-ciety of New York has, in tho past, made many advance! on old methods, and has been tho means to liberalize life assurance in a greater degree, perhapa, than any other nryani.alion. It is not at all surprising, there-fore, that this great company now comes before the people with a newcontract, the like of which has not before been known in life insurance.

l'rom the Ivi:xitckv Uiuiistki:, Itlclutimid. Ky.. June '!, HS1.

The Bqnitablo Life Assurance Society has, in the past, done more tocreate and maintain confidence in life assurance than any other company.Consequently its business is larger than that of any of its competitor.Furthermore, it has now taken a step which practically sweeps every ob-jection of the character referred to out of the way. The result, undoubt-edly, will be that thousands of men who have heretofore lacked c.oiitideni.'-i- u

life assurance, will examine the new policy offered by thf Ivpiilabli.--,and assure their lives forthwith.

A PARTY OF. INCONSISTENCY.

Kditok l)ui.i.r.m : It seemsrather strange, t1oc3 it not, thatwhile the pro-Chine- party was at-

tempting lately to suppress the Chi-

nese amendment agitation v. lth theargument that we had enough issuesbefore us. now, their leading light,H. A. l Carter, with their know-ledge and eonnlance was, as itnow appears, at that very time forc-ing an entirely new and stupendousissuo of his own upon the countryin his proposed treaty coup d'etat. It seems to Indicate that the pro-Chine-

dellnitiou of an "inoppor-tune issue" is simply "one notemanating from their own ranks orwhich does not serve their indivi-dual interests."

It must be rather amusing to theta sec these people, who

during the past two months navestood with their upraised hands atstreet corners and in countingrooms deprecating any "new or dis-

turbing issue at present howeverjust," now caught themselves in thevery act of trying to jump the coun-try with one of those "new and dis-

turbing issues" that they consideredso objectionable in others, just be-

cause this time it happened to ac-

cord with their own views of whatshould be.

We the sandlotters,agitator- - and general ruff-horu- ff

of the country would there-fore remind the fratern-ity and particularly the cream ofQueen street, in the unctuous lan-su-

it has lately coined for ourin-a- t notion and guidance, tli.it the"grave and serious" issue it hasthus thrust upon the country andthe abrupt manner in which it wasdone seems "veiy unwise, indis-creet, ill timed and inconsiderate,"and wc sincerely "hope and trustit will not occur again."

Having learned from theparty during the past two

months that it would be "unwiseand unjust" to spring so importantan issue as the Chinese amendmentupon that party without giving ittwo years more in addition to thepast two years it has had to "reflectand.ponder" over the whole ques-tion, we arc positively "grieved" tofind, on inspecting the treaty the

party proposed to theCabinet at the time they were givingus this good advice, that they in-

tended that the political clauses ofthat treaty as worded by themshould be fastened in indecenthaste upon the people at once be-

fore the people could even get tothe polls this coming election to askfor time or to stop it.

It is a matter of surprise, is itnot, that the party onthe one hand will not even submit aChinese amendment this election inpretended anxiety that the peoplewould not have sullicicnt time toconsider what they were doing, when on the other band they tookspecial pains to provide in theirtreaty scheme for a military sur-veillance of the country by UncleSara, which the Cabinet rejected, that the clause providing for thesame should go into effect at onceupon receiving the signature of theKing, while the free trade part onlyof the trGaty should be submitted tothe Legislature. This "horse ofanother color" wa3 of doing thingsby the party of all virtues is accen-tuated when we sadly rememberthat one reason urged by themagainst calling the Legislature to-

gether was that some of the Noblesand Representatives weie away aniltherefore certain districts would beunrepresented in the Legislaturewhich would be a violation of firstprinciples. We little thought then, did we, that this very gang had anissue of their own which they in-

tended the dear people, includingabsent and present Representativesand Nobles, should know nothing ofuntil it was an accomplished fact.

The crowning thought of all isthat their scheme which demandedsuch haste was simply tothose who haye this year made fromtwenty to eighty per cent, on inflat-ed stock, while the Chinese amend-ment, which they say can and mustwait their seet pleasure in 1802, isurged to secure bread and butter tocivilized men, women and childrennow being diawu into a pit of "com-petition with single male coolies. What splendid material this pro-Ch- i

ncse party is made of, is it not?"And of such is tho Kingdom ofJ leaven." SAxni.orrr.n.
