Religion/Celebrations• The Kalispel tribe’s religion is Catholic.

• Their Catholic mission opened in 1846.

• To honor spirits, men sang spirit songs and danced during a midwinter festival.

History

History• In the late 1800`s the tribe had almost no

relationship with the federal government.

• By 1875 the tribe`s population was only 395 people.

• For generations the tribal members were stuck in a terrible environment.

Current Concerns/Projects• Unemployment.

• Inadeqate housing.

• Construction of an Elder Center

Tribal Culture

Tribal Culture• Kalispel means “Camas People.”

• They are also known as the Pend d’Oreilles

• They went on long buffalo hunting trips with Flatheads.

Location

• 1/3 of them live 55 miles north of Spokane in Pend Oreille County along 10 miles of the Pend Oreille River and 40 acres of trust land in Airway Heights.

• 1/3 live in Spokane.

• 1/3 live spread out in the U.S.A. including Idaho

• The Kalispel Indian Reservation is located in Usk, Washington the Pend Oreille county.
