Welcome to Kangaroo Island - Paradise Found

Named in 1802 by English explorer, Matthew Flinders, Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third largest island, after Tasmania and Melville and is about seven times the size of Singapore but with less than 1% of the population! The island is located 110km southwest of Adelaide. Its closest point to the mainland is 13km off Cape Jervis on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Total area: about 4350km²

Population: approx. 4400

Kangaroo Island is widely accessible with an extensive bituminised road network. We urge caution on all island roads, especially the unsealed ones. Many native animals come out early in the morning, at sunset and at night and they tend to congregate at the sides of the road. Please be careful at these times as many of the animals have not been to road safety school!

Kangaroo Island enjoys a more temperate climate than the mainland. Summers are a little milder with cool evenings and winter often a little warmer. From March to June, the weather is often spectacular with long, balmy days and calm seas. Be sure to take warm clothing in the winter months of June through to September. At any time however, comfortable, casual clothing is the order of the day. If you plan to do some walking, take some boots or sturdy shoes and at all times, hats and sunscreen are recommended. Other than that, bring your camera and a sense of adventure. Feel free to leave your worries and stress on the mainland - everyone else has!

There are various Council, National Park and privately owned caravan parks and camping areas scattered across Kangaroo Island. Ask our SeaLink team for further details and please note that camping permits are required for camping in National and Conservation Parks.

Kangaroo Island is a special place with a delicate environment. Please help protect it and keep it safe from pests and diseases. Please do not bring unwashed potatoes, vine cuttings, foxes or rabbits onto the island.

Kangaroo Island is a Ligurian Bee Sanctuary. Importing honey, pollen or bee products is prohibited. A penalty of $10,000 may apply.

Please help to protect the island’s natural environment by taking care when visiting its beaches, walking trail and camping sites and remember when observing wildlife - observation not interaction!

Most major services and facilities are located within the townships on Kangaroo Island, including fuel stations, supermarkets, ATM’s, Post Office, Banks, Hospital, Retail Shops, Hotels and Restaurants. It is advisable to check opening and closing times of fuel stations before commencing travel. Mobile phone reception can also be intermittent or not available in some areas of the island.

In a world of concrete, glass and seemingly endless highways, Kangaroo Island is one of Earth’s last, unspoiled refuges.

It’s the type of place where you are only 45 minutes by ferry from the mainland but you’ll feel like you’re a million miles away! Just a short distance off the coast of South Australia, Kangaroo Island is internationally famous for its pristine wilderness and its wildlife. Across the island, kangaroos and Tammar wallabies abound. Listen carefully and you will hear echidnas and goannas scuttling around in the undergrowth. Up in the trees koalas eye you with mild amusement. Spend time at Seal Bay, home to a colony of Australian Sea-lions and watch them playing in the shallows, surfing the waves and basking on the sand. View the Little Penguins parading in the evening, and marvel at the New Zealand Fur Seals as they come crashing in out of the surf to sunbathe on the rocks at Admirals Arch.

Whilst Kangaroo Island is much celebrated for its wildlife, its food and wine are integral parts of the Kangaroo Island experience. Try the sheep’s cheese and yoghurt along with a generous dollop of organic honey from the island’s famous Ligurian Bee. Enjoy some of Kangaroo Island’s fine, home-grown and award winning wines.

Kangaroo Island (or ‘KI’ as the locals call it) is deceptively large and diverse with so much to see and do.

When taking a self-drive holiday, you’ll be able to see many of the major highlights over a two day visit but to truly discover the magic of this nature wonderland, allow three or four days, or if you’re up for a longer holiday then allow five to seven days - you’ll be so glad you did!

The islands’ capital is a bright, bustling town of about 1800 people and is situated on the shores of Nepean Bay, with panoramic views of a boat studded harbour. Many of the main services for the island are found here, including a major supermarket, hardware store, cafés, gift shops, hospital, banks, Council and Post Office.

Brownlow is a small beach side town only a short drive from Kingscote which is the largest township on Kangaroo Island. Relax by the waters edge or have a game of golf on the nearby golf course.

Emu Bay is a very popular spot on the north coast for holiday makers and boasts a beautiful, long 4km white sandy beach with vehicle access as well as safe, clear water for swimming and water activities.

Located on beautiful Hog Bay, Penneshaw is the arrival point for visitors travelling by SeaLink Ferries. It is a delightful town known for its jetty fishing, Sunday markets (first Sunday of the month), Little Penguin colony and is home to Frenchman’s Rock; a piece of history more than 200 years old.

Getting to and around Kangaroo IslandHow long does it take? SeaLink ferries depart from Cape Jervis on the mainland to Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island. The crossing takes just 45 minutes. Cape Jervis is a scenic 110km drive down the Fleurieu Peninsula from the Adelaide GPO. We advise to allow 2 hours for the drive, plus a half hour for check-in and boarding. This will give you plenty of time for a coffee or snack from CJ’s by the Sea Café at our Cape Jervis Terminal.

SeaLink Coach Connection

Coach Connection services operate between Adelaide and the SeaLink Ferry Terminal at Cape Jervis and between the SeaLink Ferry Terminal on Kangaroo Island and American River and Kingscote. They depart twice daily to connect with morning and evening ferry services. A connection service also operates from Goolwa/Victor Harbor.

Campervans from AdelaideThere are great caravan parks and camping spots on Kangaroo Island so why not take a campervan holiday and let SeaLink arrange the rental of a campervan for you from Adelaide, please refer to page 43.

Car Parking at Cape JervisSafe, secure day and longer-term car parking is available at Cape Jervis right near the SeaLink Terminal. The car park opens prior to the first ferry departure and is locked after the last departure arrives from Penneshaw. The cost is $12 per day and bookings can be made when arranging your ferry travel.

Kangaroo Island TransfersAirport transfers to and from Kingscote Airport to Kingscote township accommodation can be booked with SeaLink. There is a transfer service to meet all flights. We can also arrange personal or group transfers.

Rental CarsIf you do not have your own car to take on the ferry, SeaLink can arrange a rental car to be waiting for you on arrival at the Ferry Terminal in Penneshaw, at the Kingscote Airport or alternatively we can have one delivered to selected accommodation during your stay on the island.

Terms and ConditionsGeneral:All costs, itinerary details, ferry schedules and accommodation information are correct at the time of publishing, however, these can be subject to alteration, sometimes without notice. All services and reservations provided are subject to the conditions of the principal providers and no responsibility is accepted by the SeaLink Travel Group for misrepresentation, unforeseen omissions or additional costs incurred, including those arising from adverse weather conditions. Refunds may not be available for unused services. Ferry, Coach, Touring and Activity options may not operate on Christmas Day. Tours may be affected when part of the itinerary includes the 25th December 2012.

Pricing:All fares and prices are in Australian Dollars and valid from 01 April 2012 to 01 April 2013. All fares and prices are subject to surcharges, blackout periods, minimum night stays and seasonal variations.

Child Policy:Child prices generally apply to children aged 3 to 14 years, inclusive. In some cases this may vary - please enquire at the time of booking. Accommodation for children under 3 is generally free of charge but some accommodation may impose a small charge and/or a fee for providing a cot. Children under 3 years of age travel free of charge on SeaLink services provided they do not occupy a seat.

Room Configurations:Twin share prices are based on a ‘double’ - two people sharing a double bed (queen or king beds at some properties) or ‘twin’, consisting of two single beds. Please request either a ‘double’ or ‘twin’ at the time of reservation. ‘Extra adult’ prices are based on sharing with two other adults in the same room. Should the extra adult wish to have their own room they will be charged at ‘single’ rates. ‘Single’ prices are based on a person having their own room. ‘Extra Child’ prices are based on sharing the same room with two or more adults.

Star Ratings:Properties bearing the star symbols eg. (the ‘STARS’) are independently assessed by AAA Tourism, the national body of the Australian motoring organisations. Tourism Accreditation:Business operators that display the Accreditation Tick have achieved a high standard of customer service and business practice as set by the tourism industry. When travelling look for this symbol as your guide to finding a Nationally Accredited Tourism Business.

Hire Cars:If you are hiring a car on the mainland and plan to take this to Kangaroo Island, ensure you check out the insurance conditions with the hire car company. Alternatively, hire cars are available to be picked-up once you arrive on Kangaroo Island.

Booking and Final Payments:To make a booking a deposit of $50 per person is required. Final payments must reach The SeaLink Travel Group no later than 30 days prior to departure. For bookings made online within 30 days of travel date, full payment should be received at the time of booking.

Cancellation:Cancellation of a booking, or part thereof will incur the following fees:

•More than 30 days before departure - $50 per person

•Between 7 & 30 days before departure - $50 per person or 50% of total cost whichever is greater

• Less than 7 days before departure - $50 per person or 80% of total cost whichever is greater

•Within 24 hours of departure - 100% of total cost

No refunds will be made for services not availed once travel has commenced. All refund claims must be made in writing. Please note operators reserve the right to charge cancellation fees in addition to the above.

Amendment Fees:Due to the complexity, staff time and communication costs of the booking process, a charge of $22 (incl GST) may apply to each modification made after the original booking.

Travel Insurance:Holiday plans can be disrupted and cancellation fees can be costly. Travel Insurance is inexpensive and highly recommended. Please note that Travel Insurance may not cover disruptions caused by mechanical breakdowns or adverse weather conditions.

Conditions of Ferry Passage:1. Check-in time for all departures is to

be a minimum of 30 minutes prior to departure. Due to loading requirements, The SeaLink Travel Group reserves the right to refuse boarding for both passengers and vehicles that check-in after this time.

2. Drivers only permitted on the vehicle deck.

3. Drivers must accept direction by SeaLink Travel Group crew at all times during loading and unloading.

4. Smoking is prohibited on the vessel at all times.

5. Travel may only be permitted for a person or persons whose name(s) appear on the SeaLink Travel Group manifests. Travel arrangements may only be transferred to another person(s) with the knowledge and authority of the Company and the person who made the booking.

6. SeaLink Travel Group reserves the right to refuse to carry any person or cargo aboard any Company vessel or vehicle where the Company deems the person or cargo to be undesirable, unsuitable or dangerous.

7. Flammable liquids in portable containers will not be carried (eg. boat tanks, jerry cans, paints & thinners) unless arrangements have been made prior as loading may be required on a flammable / dangerous goods departure.

8. If you are travelling on a ‘Spirit of Kangaroo Island’ service you may be travelling with freight, which could include livestock or fuel. For more information, please enquire with your consultant.

Conditions of Travel and Booking:1. In these conditions “the Company”

means SeaLink Travel Group, its servants and agents and “the passenger” means the passenger booked to travel. Travel must be completed within 12 months of payment. These conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Australia and any Australian State.

2. The Company reserves the right to cancel, vary this service in any way, or substitute any ferry or other means of transport without incurring any liability.

3. Fares, times, schedules and routes are subject to alteration, without prior notice, at the discretion of the Company.

4. The Company shall not be liable for any loss or damage which may arise in the event of cancellation of this service or the abandonment of the service during the course thereof (should the Company or any of its servants or agents decide that such abandonment is necessary) or of any deviation or delay in any service arising from any cause whatsoever. In any such event the Company will not be liable in any way for consequential damage including, but not limited to, the cost of accommodation or for any alternative means of travel which may arise and any additional expense so arising shall be the liability of the passenger.

5. The Company accepts no responsibility for loss of, or damage to, any vehicle being carried for the passenger, or luggage, or for consequential damages arising there-from whether sustained during off-loading or transportation, and whether arising from negligence, malfunction of the vessel or other cause, except to the extent that the exclusion of such liability is prohibited by law.

6. The Company accepts no responsibility for any injury and/or death of a passenger travelling on this service whether caused by negligence, malfunction to the vessel or other cause except to the extent that exclusion of such liability is prohibited by law.

7. Kangaroo Island is a Ligurian Bee Sanctuary. Importing honey, pollen or other bee products is prohibited. A fine of up to $10,000 may apply.

8. Biosecurity on Kangaroo Island - Please help protect Kangaroo Island and keep it safe from pests and diseases. Do not bring any bee or honey products, unwashed potatoes, vine cuttings, foxes or rabbits onto the island. Penalties may apply.
