Setting Up Your BBO Account
Click on “Settings” to adjust your BBO Online
settings. I personally turn on “Confirm bids” and
“Confirm cards” since the default setting for both is
“OFF”. I have found that with these off, it is too
easy to make a mistake. I also leave the “Sound”
effects “ON” to alert me of my turn and chat
messages. I also recommend leaving “Speak chat”
on to alert me to partner & table chat along with
messages from the director during the game.
Your “Real Name” and the comments entered
under “Other” is what players see when the
select your BBO “Username”. I suggested
entering major conventions that you play or
differences from ACBL SAYC which is the default
Convention Card on BBO. Here I am showing
that I do not play Jacoby 2NT and my modified
Jacoby Transfers are of 3 Spades to 3 Clubs and
3 Clubs to 3 Diamonds.
Select the “Accounts” tab to update
your “Profile”, adjust “Settings” and
enter a “Convention Card”.

Setting Up A Convention Card
To use a Convention Card, you
will click here when you are
still in the “Accounts” tab.
If you are using non-standard card, you will click
on this tab to enter it on a blank convention
card. I suggest you start with the ACBL SAYC
“Stock Card” and then edit it for your play. It will
save to your “Personal Cards” where you can
rename it. This is how I got the “George-Merlin
Precision” Card under My “Personal Cards”.
Select the convention card you
want to use when playing today.
Type the “Username” of your
partner in the box to the right of
“Use with partner” button and then
apply. This will save the convention
card in that User's profile too so
they can review it before the game
begins. If you have a regular
partner you can share this with
then at any time since both of you
do not be online for this.

Bidding/Alerting/Misc. During The Game
YOU SELF-ALERT ON BBO.
When you do, you and your opponents
will be able to see the “Alert”, but not
your partner. In fact, your partner will
not even see that the bid has been
alerted. Click on the bid you are going
to make and then click on “Alert” and
then type in the explanation. The order
does not matter if you have “Confirmed
Bid” turned on in “Settings”. Otherwise
you must “Alert” and type in the
explanation before entering your bid.
-
To ask the meaning of a bid, click on the
“Bid”. In this example, East “Alerted” that 3
Spades was a transfer bid to clubs. His
partner bid 3NT, remember his partner
West does not have to accept the transfer.
When East bid 4 Spades, South clicked on
the 4S bid which sent an “Explanation” box
to the East player. After explaining the bid
as shown, everyone saw his explanation
except his partner West. West’s bid of 5
Clubs probably meant that he missed the
transfer or realized that East did not want
the partnership playing in 3NT. Remember
West did not see the “Explanation” that
East mis bid. To get rid of the explanation
box click somewhere in the box.
If at any time you want to review the
bid, click on the “Contract” box. To
remove the “Bidding” box you will
have to click on the “Contract” box
again.

Becoming A Substitute For Any ACBL Game
I
If you would like to offer your
services as a substitute and don't
really care which tournament, the
“Substitutes” button will add you
to the substitute list where any
tournament director can call on
you to sub in any tournament or
team game. Choose Virtual Clubs,
the ACBL – North America and
then click on the “Substitutes”
button.
If you check this box, your name
will be on the “Substitute” list
for all virtual games. Once you
are on the list, you may be called
on to substitute at any time. You
do have the option of refusing or
removing you name from the
“Substitute” list at any time.

Becoming A Substitute For The Kansas Collective Game
I
As you may know, a half table is not allowed and the game Directors’ often must resort to
"substitute any", bringing two players in from Greece, India, Spain or wherever. If you would like to
make yourself available to be a sub before a game starts, the following is how someone can
substitute in our Kansas Collective game. This works for any Virtual Club game so if you would like
to sub in another Unit’s game, such as Oklahoma, just search for their name and host number.
Any time before the game (the earlier, the better) start by going to the “Home” screen and click on Virtual Clubs” and then ACBL-North America. Click on the “Pending” tab and then type in a few identifying letters in the search box to narrow down the list of virtual games. For the Kansas Collective game type “kan”.
Once our game is located click on our “Host#” (VACB273458) to message our director and say you are available as a substitute. It is recommended that you stay online since our director will invite you to our game by sending an invite to your “Username”. Normally subs are invited within 15 minutes of game start. You can be registered as a “Substitute” also, but you may have to reject many requests to play as you await an invite to join our game since the “Substitutes” list is global. Our VACB Director is as busy as the proverbial one-armed paper hanger in the minutes before a game. He/she is trying to get everyone online (not easy when the site is hammered) and trying to make sure there is not a half table. Having a couple of substitutes in the lobby is a real blessing and they will love you for it. Then register as a “Substitute” as described previously and await an invite to join our game.
