It has been a privilege to serve as the Region 3 Trustee this year and an honor to have beenable to travel to promote the ideals of our Academy. In January I was delighted to attendthe 1st Annual Latin American Academic and Scientific Meeting held in conjunction with

the International Dental Congress in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Knowingthe work involved in setting something like this up for just oneSection in one state, let alone multiple countries across a continent, Ican only say “Hats off” to Region 7 Trustee, Dr. Ernesto Acuna forputting together an excellent scientific program, Section Chairworkshop andinternational inductionceremony! Dr. Acunahas started a new andwonderful tradition forthe Latin American

Section. Kudos Ernesto, on your outstandingevent!

I had the pleasure of visiting five of my tenSections for their induction ceremonies thisyear starting in February with Georgia’sweekend Conference and Convocation andSouth Carolina’s annual Luncheon, both ofthese functions were for just for PFA Fellows and pride in the Academy is clearly evidentin these Sections, in fact in South Carolina, most of the attendees come wearing their PFAkey fobs! In April the Louisiana Section was back in action for the first time sinceHurricane “Ivan” hosting a combined breakfast. In June I had the pleasure of attending adelightful combined dinner meeting hosted by the Mississippi Section followed by a well-organized and informative PFA Fellows luncheon in Virginia. This year the VirginiaSection decided to hold their luncheon as solely a PFA function and I believe that thisworked extremely well for them; not only was the luncheon well attended, but they wereable to put their whole focus on their new inductees and honorees as well as have adequatetime for the program and business meeting. All the Section Chairs in these states areworking hard to promote the Academy and to continually strive to do more each year and Iapplaud their efforts!

I’d like to take this opportunity to record my thanks for the warm welcomes I received onmy visits, it was a terrific opportunity for me to get to know my Section Chairs and to seehow well the Academy is doing across the Southeast. I would also love to be able to visitthe other five Sections at least once during my tenure as Trustee, just let me know theparticulars of your meeting a month or two in advance and I will do what I can to attend.

I am pleased to report that we had 55 Inductees in Region 3 this year.

It was great to see the Louisiana Section up and running again at their Annual Breakfastmeeting held in conjunction with the New Orleans Dental Conference/ Louisiana DentalAssociation Annual Session on April 12, 2008. This was their first meeting sinceSeptember 2003 as Hurricane “Ivan”interrupted the 2004 NODA Meetingfollowed by “Katrina” which wiped out the2005 NODA meeting and there was nomeeting in 2006 because of the damaged city.Last year when the first NODA-LDAMeeting took place, Section Chair Dr.Ribando was unable to organize the breakfastbecause of cancer treatments. Fortunately Dr.Ribando was able to get the 2008 breakfastorganized, unfortunately however, he was

I was honored to be a guest of the Virginia Section this year as they changed their meetingformat from a combined luncheon with the ICD to a luncheon solely for PFA Fellows. Ibelieve this to be a positive change for the Section as it affords them more time to focusattention on Academy business as well as being able to spotlight their honorees. I’d alsolike to thank Dr. Taylor for hiswonderful hospitality in pickingme up from the airport andgiving up his room at theconvention hotel so that I couldbe onsite…you get “above andbeyond” kudos for that Gary!

On May 12, 2008 Luz D. Visbal-Mendez a senior dental student at the University ofPuerto Rico received the 2008 Award of Recognition of the PFA Academy.

Section Chair Garcia-Aquirre sent in this report: “We started to send letters to thecandidates and receive several CV of good people. Our plans were to do the inductionduring the summer at our dental meeting, that according to our ByLaws was suppose to bein July or August. Unfortunately the situation has changed here at the island. As you knowin PR the “Colegio” is compulsory by law and every dentist have to be a member, the newdirective has not worked in the way we expected and didn’t do the summer meeting thatthey were suppose to do. This and other internal issues have created a dislocation of ourprofession and the usual and customary performance. I personally had to get involve withsome of the local issues that have kept me very busy, amongst them taking over the PRdelegation at the House of Delegates of the ADA, the presidency of one of the districts ofthe State Dental Associations, and recently I was appointed by Dr. Feldman to the hearingcommittee of the ADA on Dental Education and Related Matters.

On the other hand Dr. Gonzalez directs the GP program and has been very busy. We hadeverything planned to do the induction at the summer meeting, but we are already in Septand the new local presidency hasn’t do anything (I don’t know if we are going to have thismid-year meeting).

I am sorry about this news, are not the one you expected. We were trying to organize achapter from scratch, with no previous organization, and no finances; that’s why wethought to do it at the state meeting to have a better chance. We hope to have more supportonce the new directive members take over the Colegio in February.”
