Kate’s Story
Kate has now spent 4 camps as a Camp Kulin Camp Counsellor - this is her story
“If I had to describe my week at camp in three words, they would be: challenging, rewarding and life
-changing. I’ve said before that a week can change a life. When I decided to come back to camp at
Camp Kulin in April 2013, I didn’t realise that I still had more to learn. I believe that kids can do
anything given the opportunity, and sometimes being challenged can show you your full potential. I
thought that I knew what campers were capable of – I was wrong.
The week at camp was remarkable and something I will not soon forget. Every single person was
challenged at some point (including all the counsellors) and everyone came out with some new
perspective and greater understanding of themselves and others.

Editorial The Shire of Kulin and the CRC would like to welcome its new Manager, Marie Martin and her family to our shire and its wonderful community. Marie comes to her new role with a sound background in sales, marketing and was formally the training manager of WA’s largest yoga school, teaching and training students to become yoga teachers both in Perth and in South East Asia. Marie is married to our new Police Officer, First Class Constable Micheal Martin (the word on the street is he likes a kick of the footy) and has an energetic 3 year old, Lulu.
Please make Marie welcome and be sure to pop into the CRC to say hello and make yourself known to her. There will be a few changes and plenty of new and exciting things happening at the CRC in the near future and Marie would appreciate local community feedback about what you feel the CRC could offer and improve on.
Look out for the freshly branded Kulin Weekly Update, so make sure you let the CRC know of any events your business or community group might be having so we can add it to our events calendar. We will be introducing some new pricing for advertising to take effect from the first of January 2014 alongside with the introduction of more editorials and articles helping to showcase all of the amazing people, interesting events and the vast appeal of this great Shire. Don’t feel shy in asking for help in writing an article about an event your group has had, we will even come along and join in and take photos where possible.
Over the next few months we will be introducing regular training, workshops and seminars. It is important for us to get community input on what you think you, your community group, business or friends and family would like to access. The CRC will be advertising in January for expressions of interest for courses to be held in the following months. If you, your community group or business have a particular skill or talent and you would like to run some training at our centre, you are interested in a particular area or have an idea for a workshop then please contact the CRC manager to discuss what options are available.
Finally, the CRC will be advertising for 3-5 new committee members to come on board the current committee and reforming into the CRC Development Committee for 2014. This committee will be an important support network for the CRC manager and help to oversee the implementation of the new guidelines and outcomes set out in the WACRN Review. This committee will be an important voice for the community and its expectations of the CRC and how it can best service the Shire of Kulin while meeting the outcomes in the review. We will be seeking energetic and passionate community members to fill these openings. If you are interested please feel free to contact the CRC manager for more information and keep an eye out for the full description of the committee positions in future editions.
Coming away from camp, the campers have all been given valuable life skills – teamwork,
communication skills, the ability to trust others and persevere through hardships, increased self
esteem – the list goes on and on. The campers were pushed in ways they probably never
expected. From trusting people they’d met on the bus the previous day in team building
exercises, to hiking up a rock that towered over them, to having to stand up in front of other
groups and be a part of the talent show on the final night. Some of the campers came out of
their shells, some learned to hold back anger, and they all got through all the challenges by
working together and persevering.
I’d like to tell a quick story from camp, so bare with me for just a moment. At the previous camp
I went on, in January, one of the campers in my group was afraid of heights. Not just a little bit
afraid; seriously scared. Over the course of the week, we took part in a number of activities
including climbing up to the top of Jilakin Rock (a large granite monolith) and she’d tackle every
challenge put in front of her and make it through. She faced her fear, and got through it.
This camper was back at camp in April. All the changes I’d seen in her in January were still
there – she was more open and confident and sure of herself. This was proven to me on our
descent from Jilakin Rock, where she took initiative and helped another camper down the rock,
taking the role that I had had for her on the previous camp. She opened up even more over the
course of camp, and on the final night she and one of the other members of her group got up
and sang to all of us. I couldn’t have been prouder. To see that she was building upon
messages from previous camps and taking those skills forward shows me that these camps are
incredibly valuable.
Just seeing the changes in the kids over the 5 days they were on camp was enough to
understand the importance of the camps. Camps like the ones run by Camp Kulin give the
campers the opportunity to be children for a week. They learn life skills and change in ways that
take most people a lifetime. Every child blossomed and changed over the week. To have
campers crying and saying that they didn’t want to go home on the last day tells me exactly how
important the camps are to the campers.
Coming home has been more difficult this time than last time. The bonds forged with campers
and counsellors mean that you miss them. You make friendships that’ll last a lifetime. And
there’s nothing you can do about it. The experiences I had at camp have left me wanting to
work with young people more. Given me a new view on why people might act out or behave in
different ways. Made me realise what I value in a friend. If I were asked to go on another camp,
I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I can’t explain why – it’s just something everyone should have the
opportunity to experience.

Thanks to everyone who came along to the Camp Kulin sleepover on the weekend to
coincide with the Freebairn Recreation Centre 10th Birthday. We enjoyed a great night of
party games, followed by early morning games of Skunk and Sprout Ball. Special thanks to
our weekend volunteer team, Pat, Daniel, Jesse, Brittany, Panalee, Samantha & Tahnee,
as well as Kulin IGA for their ongoing support of our programs.
SLEEPOVER
The Camp Kulin team will be taking on a challenge with a difference this Saturday to raise money for the Cancer
Council’s Relay For Life.
The team of camp counsellors - Daniel, Brittany S, Jesse, Tahnee, Smurf, Mini Smurf, Kennah, Ollie, Olivia, Scott
& Sam - will be tackling the Kulin waterslide for 12 hours straight.
“Many of our Camp Kulin camp counsellors are taking part in Relay for Life Rockingham Kwinana again in April
2014, and we wanted a unique way to raise money for our team,” Camp Kulin Manager and event organiser
Tanya Dupagne said.
“The waterslide is something that is a part of our camp program, and we knew that 12 hours straight on it
would be an enormous challenge. Most of us have been impacted by cancer in some way though, so even
though it is going to be an extremely long day – and everyone will no doubt have very sore legs by the end of it
– we know that it is nothing compared to the everyday challenges faced by those with cancer.”
People are welcome to come along and support the team on the day. The pool/slide will be open during regular
operating hours (standard admission applies) and a sausage sizzle will be available.
The team would also welcome any donations/sponsors. All donations are fully tax deductible, and go to Cancer
Council WA (Relay for Life).
For more information about the Slideathon challenge, or to make a donation, visit the Camp Kulin Facebook
page, www.facebook.com/campkulin

Harvest pressures.
Most of our stress comes as a result of external circumstances. But our thinking about them
is the real problem. We can’t change the weather. We can’t change the quality of the grain.
We can’t change the prices. We can’t change the cost of inputs. But we can change the way
we think about all those variables.
The best way is to think of ourselves not as ‘farmers’, but as ‘persons who happen to be farm-
ing’ as part of who we are in this world. That way, if the farming enterprise ‘fails’ in any way,
it is not we who fail; we are still persons of worth with many successful ‘roles’ of father /
mother, son/daughter, husband /wife, friend, helper, thinker, lover, etc. In times when exter-
nals don’t go the way we would like, we must focus our sense of self – and, thus, worth – and
on those other aspects of who we are. And even more important than those ‘roles’ (which
are also externals to some extent), we must focus on the inner reality that ‘we are each
unique persons of immeasurable and equal worth’. That is our true ‘success’ because it is our
True Self; the external achievements are a bonus.
And, rather than bravely battling on alone through our stresses, it is essential to talk to those
close to us about the struggles. The old ‘problem shared is a problem halved’ adage, is true
and it works. The best advice is ‘don’t be alone’, and ‘don’t base your worth on externals
which are all subject to forces beyond our control’. And if you want to talk about any of this,
call or email; I’d love to talk with you.

Laugh Out Loud (LOL) Farming jokes
How do farmers make crop circles?
With a protractor
What did the farmer say when he lost his tractor?
''Where's my tractor?''
What do you call a guy who used to like tractors?
An Extractor fan.
A farmer and his wife had just waken up one morning to the crowing of their rooster. While still in bed, the
farmer's wife says, "Pa, you know our neighbor Mr. Jones?"
"Yes Ma, I reckon I do," replied the sleepy farmer.
"Well, every morning before he leaves the house for work, he gives his wife a big ol' kiss. Why don't you ev-
er do that?"
The farmer sighed and said, "Well, I reckon I can, but I just don't know her very well."
