What is SNLs?Standardized nursing language (SNL) is acommonly-understood set of terms used todescribe the clinical judgments involved in
assessments (nursing diagnoses), along with theinterventions, and outcomes related to thedocumentation of nursing care
SNLs-3 elements of nursing care as defined by
the Nursing Minimum Data Set (NMDS)Diagnoses of human responses (NDxs)
Nursing interventions (NRxs)

Benefits of Standardized
LanguagesThe use of standardized nursing languages has manyadvantages for the direct care/bedside nurse. These
include: better communication among nurses andother health care providers, increased visibility ofnursing interventions, improved patient care, enhanced data collection to evaluate nursing careoutcomes, greater adherence to standards of care, and facilitated assessment of nursing competency.

InterventionsInterventions that should be undertaken to in supportnursing judgments and that demonstrate the depth
of nursing judgment are built into the standardizednursing languages. For example, one activity listedunder labor induction in the NIC language is that ofre-evaluating cervical status and verifyingpresentation before initiating further inductionmeasures (McCloskey-Dochterman & Bulechek,2004). This activity guides the nurse to assess thedilatation and effacement of the cervix andpresentation of the fetus, before making a judgment
about continuing the induction procedure.

Improved Patient CareThe use of a standardized nursing language canimprove patient care. Cavendish (2001) surveyed
sixty-four members of the National Association ofSchool Nurses to obtain their perceptions of the mostfrequent complaints for abdominal pain. They usedthe NIC and NOC to determine the interventions andoutcomes of children after acute abdomen had beenruled out. Nurses identified the chief complaints ofthe children, the most frequent etiology, the mostfrequent pain management activities from the NIC,and the change in NOC outcomes after intervention.

Enhanced Data Collection to
Evaluate Nursing Care Outcomes
The use of a standardized language to recordnursing care can provide the consistency
necessary to compare the quality ofoutcomes for various nursing interventionsacross. Patient outcomes are also related tothe uniqueness of the individual, the caregiven by other health care professionals, andthe environment in which the care isprovided.

Implications of Standardized Language
for Nursing Education, Research, and
AdministrationIn addition to enhancing the care provided by directcare nurses, standardized language has implications
for nursing education, research, and administration.Nurse educators can use the knowledge inherent instandardized nursing languages to educate futurenurses. Such a system can be used to describe theunique roles of the nurse. Nurse educators can teachstudents to use systems such as the CCC and OmahaSystem when in the community health fields, or theuse of the NANDA, NIC, NOC terminology when inthe acute care setting.

Why SNLs?SNLs represent pooled nursingknowledge
Use of pooled knowledge helps nursesto plan, interpret, intervene andevaluate
Sciences seek generally usefulvocabularies, ones that produce results
Results = quality of care
