From the Principal’s Desk…

Whenever I am asked what makes a school great, there tends to be a surprise when I

don't reply "awards". As far as I am concerned, that's a given. It is a given because

when processes, systems and structures are in place, they eventually lead to the

results and the achievements that are affirmations of what the school is doing right in

its strategic directions.

I have always found that a more accurate test of the greatness of a school to be the

strength of personality of a school. The personality of a school made up of its people

(staff, students, stakeholders) known for its drive and motivation, never faltering,

never wavering from what it believes in - is what makes a school truly great! It is what

makes CHIJ Kellock stand out for its unique brand of education.

Our Achievements

In our tradition of providing this brand of education, CHIJ Kellock's successful

celebration of our 50th anniversary last year coupled with impressive achievements in

the PSLE, in CCA Sports and Arts and in other areas, bear testimony of the

compelling vision of what CHIJ Kellock sets out to do year after year – providing

quality education to our girls!

The Kellock Experience

And it is that relentlessly precise and unerring sense of how things should be that

makes everything we do at CHIJ Kellock focused on the child, helping every Kellock

Girl and inspiring each of them to be…

A Thoughtful Learner

A Servant Leader

A Person for Others.

When translated, these 3 student outcomes spell out the BE-ing of each child and

what the Kellock Girl will learn and pick up in knowledge, skills and attitudes in their 6

years in the school, known to us as the Kellock Experience.

Moving Ahead

Year 2014 was a significant year for CHIJ Kellock because we crossed a threshold of

a new era in our celebration of 50 years of our existence, since its inception in 1964.

An anniversary inevitably invites us to look back, but it also invites us to move into the future with hope and

renewed faith. In defining the Kellock Experience with its central focus on the child, my staff and I revisited

our practices in the school and have been asking ourselves pertinent questions about the desired future

that we want to create in CHIJ Kellock. Questions like:- what can we bring back from our halcyon days to

help us restart our engines? What should we reverse? What should we eliminate? What else is out there for

us?…were asked and deliberated on. It was and still is a journey of finding purpose and direction and of

affirming the values that anchor us to what we want to do.

My team and I would like to share with you, parents, in this and other issues of Kellock Connects, a glimpse

of our hopes and our strategic directions for this year.

School Vision and Values

In taking bold steps towards that direction, the school’s co-created revised vision points the way forward for

the school:-

A Christ-centred LEARNing Community where every child will develop her unique giftedness to LEAD and

MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

The vision retains the key tenets of LEARN, LEAD and MAKE A DIFFERENCE because they aptly describe

what CHIJ Kellock aims to achieve when we nurture our girls to be Thoughtful Learners, Servant Leaders

and Persons for Others. The vision strengthens our conviction to look at the child as our central focus,

helping her to develop her unique giftedness and to achieve her personal best in a school environment that

bears witness to God above all else.

In alignment with the vision, some newly introduced features include:-

The inclusion of Resilience in our existing School Values - an imperative value for our girls to be imbibed with in this complex, volatile, uncertain and ambiguous world that we live in;

A revised Student Planner that aims to help our girls organize their work, responsibilities and expectations in a more deliberate manner;

A new emphasis in the way we deliver our curriculum with our focus on a student-centric approach that will help our girls to achieve their personal best in the academic subjects as well as in sports and the arts;

The introduction of new CCAs and a renewed focus on our niche CCA Sports and CCA Arts;

A balanced and learner-centric focus on assessments for a more holistic approach in teaching and learning; and

An inaugural Parent Symposium that will engage our parents in partnership with the school to help our girls in their all-round development

The strength of a school does not need to be weighed in epic measures. If we do what is right by our

children, we would have delivered the Kellock Experience in its true essence and spirit.

With your support and the support of many of our community partners, we will continue to meet and

surmount fresh challenges in the conviction that the best is yet to be.

Yours in partnership,

Ms Magdalene Chin

Principal

3. Finance Matters: Consolidated Notification / Collection Payment for School Programmes and Resources

The consolidated collection of payment for resources and school programmes as part of the

school’s curriculum was implemented in February 2014 to improve the efficiency of

administering collections of enrichment programmes and other school charges from students.

Page 4: Kellock Connects! 9 January 2015 Issue 1

4

We will continue with this practice in 2015 at the beginning of each semester in January and

July. The payment made will be for items that generally involve whole-level participation and

use such as:

Designated school programmes for the whole-level

Learning Journeys

Worksheets /In-house publications /Workbooks

Other teaching and learning materials /resources

These items are usually subsidised by the school with co-payment from you. Parents’ consent

for deductions from their child’s Edusave Accounts for the payment or co-payment of

enrichment programmes arranged for your child will be sought. We will be issuing

the consolidated notification/collection letter for Semester 1 by 16 January, Friday.

4. Safety Matters

4.1 Updates on Students' Health

Students have been issued the Student Medical Record Form together with the Student

Particulars Form for updating by parents/guardians by the end of this week. The information

provided will help the teachers better cater to the safety of our students and to take

precautionary measures as and when required.

As the medical condition of students can change over time, we request that parents update the

school of any change in the health or medical status of their child. It is important that parents

inform the Form Teacher of their child’s class and attach supporting documents from the doctor

where applicable.

For children who are asthmatic and require the use of an inhaler, the personal inhaler should be

brought to school, labelled with the child’s name and class.

4.2 Traffic Reminders

To facilitate a smooth arrival and dismissal for your child, we appeal to those of you who drive to take note of the measures that the school has put in place:

Alighting at Gate C

• For your child to alight at Gate C, drive into Bukit Purmei (church), make a U-turn and allow your child to alight quickly outside Gate C

Alighting at Gate A:

• Drive into Bukit Teresa Road. Allow your child to alight at the side gate after Gate A to facilitate buses driving in and out of school. A U-turn can be executed at the cul-de-sac at the end of the hill.

• LTA has marked the stretch of road along Kampong Bahru (in front of the school) as a “No stopping at all times” zone. Parents are reminded not to let their children alight along that stretch of road.

Page 5: Kellock Connects! 9 January 2015 Issue 1

5

• LTA has also implemented a “No Right Turn” between 7.00 a.m. – 7.30 a.m. out from Bukit Purmei to Kampong Bahru Road. Parents are advised to use the back gate of St Teresa’s Church to turn out into Kampong Bahru Road.

• Parents who are fetching their children after school at Gate A are advised to come later at 2.00 p.m. from Mondays to Wednesdays and 1.40 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays. This is to alleviate the traffic congestion along Bukit Teresa Road.

We appeal to you to be patient as the traffic coming into the school is rather heavy at the start of the school day and also at dismissal time.

We seek your understanding and cooperation in ensuring that alighting is only at either Bukit Purmei or Bukit Teresa Road, as it is dangerous for the girls and also causes traffic congestion when cars stop in the middle of the road. Kindly adhere to the traffic flow to ensure a smooth and safe journey.

5.3 Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) 2015

CCAs are an integral part in providing holistic education for our students. Through CCA, students discover their interests and talents, develop values and competencies that will prepare

Page 7: Kellock Connects! 9 January 2015 Issue 1

7

them for a rapidly changing world. CCA also promotes friendship among students from diverse backgrounds as they learn, play and grow together. It is through participation in CCA that will foster and deepen students’ sense of belonging, commitment and sense of responsibility to school, community and nation.

CCA Policy

All P4 to P6 students are required to participate in a CCA and are expected to stay in the same CCA till graduation from the school. This allows students to progressively acquire, develop and deepen their knowledge, skills and attitudes.

CCA Selection Exercise

The CCA Selection Exercise 2015 will be conducted via our e-learning portal, MC Online, from Friday, 9 January 2015 after 3pm to Monday, 12 January 2015. Please note that selection is not based on first come first served basis and that returning members to the CCA will be given priority. Parents should discuss the various options available with your daughter and help them exercise their choices through the CCA Selection process. The school has also identified a group of Primary 3 students who will be invited to participate in CCA and these Primary 3 students will be given a hard copy of the ‘Letter of Offer’ and will not be required to login on MC Online.

Students who do not have internet access will be given a printed copy of the CCA Selection forms. Ms Gwi Kiat Hoon, CCA Co-ordinator, has conducted a briefing for students on Wednesday, 7 January 2015, to explain the CCA Selection Process and the usage of MC Online. Details of the various CCAs and instructions on how to submit the CCA options will be put up on MC Online when CCA selection starts on Friday, 9 January 2015 after 2pm.

CCA Training Schedule

Students who are part of the training squads and school teams of the various sports and

performing CCAs will start their CCAs in Week 2 Monday, 12 January 2015. Teachers in charge

will provide parents and students with the necessary details through consent forms.

5.4 Assessment

Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning process. It is a process of gathering

information about students’ learning by teachers. It provides teachers, students and parents with

useful feedback about the students’ learning so that they can make better progress in their

learning.

When assessment is made of learning, the assessment is summative in nature and is

conducted at critical points e.g. mid-year and/or end-of-year. However, when the purpose of

assessment is for learning, the assessment is formative in nature and takes place all the time in

the classroom and is a process embedded in instruction. In Kellock, we practise both summative

and formative assessments to support teaching and learning in the school and to develop the

potential of every girl.

More information will be given to you through the level teachers on the holistic assessment

plans for Term 1 by week 4.

5.5 Application for Exemption from offering Mother Tongue Language (MTL)

The Mother Tongue Language (MTL) policy requires all students (including foreign students) to

offer MTL in addition to English. In general, Chinese/Malay/Indian students are required to study

their respective MTL. Students who are Eurasians or of mixed parentage may apply to offer any

of the three official MTL. Non-Tamil Indian students may apply to offer one of the five approved

non-Tamil Indian languages (Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi Punjabi and Urdu). At Kellock, we offer

Tamil. Should girls wish to offer any other language, they may do so outside of the school.

Should you have any queries, please check with our Head of Department MTL, Mdm Wong

6. School Events in Term 1

6.1 Total Defence Day - Food Rationing and In-Place-Protection Exercise

(13 February, Friday)

Total Defence Day falls on 15 February annually to mark Singapore's fall to the Japanese in

1942. This annual event reminds us that the task of nation-building is not easy, and that we

must work to preserve our present prosperity and stability. The theme for Total Defence Day

2015 is “The Strength of Our Nation”. 2015 marks 50 years of both Singapore’s independence

and the formation of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).

To commemorate Total Defence Day this year, we will be conducting a food rationing

exercise on 13 February, Friday, during recess. The canteen vendors will only be selling

sweet potato porridge and green bean soup. Usual food will only be available in the school

canteen after 11.30 a.m. We would appreciate it if you could let your daughter’s/ward’s form

teacher know whether your daughter/ward requires special dietary consideration due to her

medical condition.

As part of civil defence, the school will also be conducting the In-Place-Protection Exercise on

13 February, Friday, during curriculum time. This public protection measure introduced in

2003 aims to educate public on appropriate protective actions to adopt to protect ourselves in

the event of a hazardous release, which may arise either from terrorist attack or industrial

accidents.

Page 10: Kellock Connects! 9 January 2015 Issue 1

6.2 Careers Day @ Kellock (17 February, Tuesday)

As part of Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) in Kellock, education and career

guidance (ECG) aims to engage, inspire and challenge our students to develop aspirations and

plan proactively for their future. As such, the school will be having Careers Day on 17 February,

Tuesday. An assembly talk and sharings by professionals have been planned to enable our

students to explore viable career options through the sharing by professionals and to inculcate

an appreciation for all occupations and how they contribute to the society.

On top of assembly talk and sharing by professionals, Primary 5 and 6 students will also be

exposed to the online career portal where they will learn more about the different careers and

the pre-requisites, and also do target setting so as to chart their progress as they work towards

their goals.

6.3 Mother Tongue Fortnight (5 February, Thursday – 18 February, Wednesday)

This is the fourth consecutive year that the MTL department has organised Mother Tongue

Fortnight for our students in CHIJ Kellock. The theme for this year’s fortnight is “Our Heritage,

Our Pride”. This is part of the celebration of SG 50, where we want our students to know more

about their “roots” by exposing them to the language environment of the 1960s and 1970s in

Singapore. The Primary 3 and Primary 4 CL students will participate in the dialect culture trail to

learn more about the culture of the 5 different dialects, namely Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese,

Hakka and Hainanese. Students taking Tamil and Malay will also go through a similar culture

trail for their respective Mother Tongue languages.

Another objective of the fortnight is to get our students to appreciate the contributions made by

the pioneers of that era. For example, upper primary Tamil students will learn more about

Bharathiyar and Bharathithasan. Ponggal Festival will also be celebrated during Mother Tongue

Fortnight. We will also end our Mother Tongue Fortnight on a high note with the Chinese New

Year concert on 18 of February. We are privileged to have Mr Nick Shen(沈玮峻) and Mr

Edmund Chen(陈之财)as speakers to inspire our girls to love their Mother Tongue!

6.4 Chinese New Year (CNY) Celebrations (18 February, Wednesday)

CHIJ Kellock will be celebrating Lunar New Year on 18 February in the morning. As it is the eve

of the Lunar New Year, students will be dismissed at 10.00 a.m. after the concert. Students are

encouraged to wear their traditional costumes on that day. To celebrate Singapore’s 50 years of

independence, we would like to use the CNY celebration as a platform to pay tribute to our

pioneer generation. Therefore, besides the senior citizens from Radin Mas Residential

Community, we would also like to invite the grandparents of our girls to join us for this festive

celebration. A separate invitation will be sent to you soon.

As CNY celebration this year is part of our Mother Tongue Fortnight programme, the theme of

the concert is also “Our Heritage, Our Pride”. We will start the CNY concert with an exciting

opening ceremony to kick off the celebratory spirit, followed by a lion dance performance.

Besides specially-designed performances and games, there will also be a self-created video

presentation cum quiz to enthuse our students to learn more about their dialect culture and the

importance of the pioneers in building Singapore. On top of this, the teachers will also sing

Chinese Year songs on stage. The CNY celebration will end with staff and students singing the

CNY songs together and the giving of Mandarin oranges by our Principal and Vice Principals.

Page 11: Kellock Connects! 9 January 2015 Issue 1

11

Do note that there is no school on 19 February, Thursday, and 20 February, Friday. School

will resume on 23 February, Monday.

6.5 English Week 2015 (2 March, Monday, to 6 March, Friday)

Themed ‘Good English! Anytime, anyplace, anywhere!’, English Week aims to provide

opportunities for students to develop themselves as confident speakers of the English

Language. Aligned with the EL vision ‘Communicators: Effective, Confident, Thoughtful’, EL

Week provides platforms and opportunities to cultivate the good habit of speaking proper

English, in a thoughtful manner through a variety of activities.

To achieve this, many interesting and meaningful activities such as assembly talks by our very

own local author, Ms Tan Ter Cheah, Kellock’s very own signature programme known as Speak

Proper English At Kellock (SPEAK Award) Competition and interesting story-telling sessions

by professional story-tellers like Kamini Ramachandran, co-founder of MoonShadow Stories,

Artistic Director of the Singapore International Storytelling Festival, and a founding member,

four-term President (2008 – 2012) and current Vice-President of the Storytelling Association

(Singapore), and level-wide activities such as book cafés and workshops tailored to suit the

different age groups from Primary 1 to Primary 6 have been planned to encourage and motivate

students to think, write, read and speak clearly and effectively.

6.6 Camps for Life @ Kellock

Acknowledging the potential of camps in providing teacher-student interaction time, authentic

learning opportunities for students to acquire life skills and build resilience, the school has put in

place a six year programme - Camps for Life. During the course of the camps, our students will

have opportunities to develop confidence, self-esteem and teamwork through their participation

in new and challenging activities. The activities also increase their awareness and

understanding of school values, acquisition of social emotional competencies and life skills. This

six year “Camps for Life” programme is age and developmentally appropriate. Camps for Life is

a wonderful educational, developmental and social experience for all students.

8. Parent Support Group Matters

Happy New Year! Kellock PSG wishes you and your family a healthy, peaceful and fulfilling

2015! We hope you and your child(ren) will have an enriching year in CHIJ Kellock!

~~~~~ Unveiling our new motto! ~~~~~
Your Hand in Mine
Nurturing, Guiding and Supporting the Child’s Journey in CHIJ Kellock.
Kellock PSG is proud to introduce our new motto, Your Hand In Mine. Inspired by our logo, the motto gives meaning to what being a Kellock PSG parent volunteer is about – to nurture,
guide and Support the Child’s Journey in CHIJ Kellock. We do this when we:
Positively and actively support the aims and objectives of the school by strengthening home-school collaboration and partnership
Foster parents’ shared interests in and responsibilities for the children by promoting parental involvement in school programmes
We would like to dedicate this to all past and present parent volunteers who have given their time and contributions in Kellock PSG.
~~~~~ 2014 Term 4: Kellock PSG FROZEN Movie Night ~~~~~

We had an enjoyable, cosy evening with lots of yummy food, pre-movie activities and of course, the all-popular Frozen movie, screened right here at our school hall. Before the movie started, the children got their creative hands working on cutting out snowflakes using baking paper while others took photos at our specially designed Frozen photo booth that came with a life-sized Olaf! We also created our own Frozen drink – yums!

Once the movie started, the girls sang along to now-familiar tunes of ‘Do You want To Build A Snowman’, ‘For The First Time in Forever’ and of course, ‘Let It Go’!

We also had a mid-movie Frozen costume parade and quiz. Dressing up in Frozen-themed costumes was clearly not a problem at all with the girls! Just check out the photos!

Term 4: Bling It On – P6 Graduation Party ~~~~~

Our P6 graduates had a blast at their Bling It on! Party on 13 November 2014. It was held at NTU Alumni, organised by our P6 parents together with their form teachers. They were treated to a dessert table of chocolate-coated marshmallows, a pyramid of macaroons and enjoyed games and

won prizes! Our girls were all decked out in their best party dresses and had a boogie good time! We wish all P6 graduates all the best going forward and to come

back to visit all of us @ Kellock!

~~~~~ 2015: A New Year Awaits Us ~~~~~
