YEAR SIX INQUIRY – ACTION DAY

In Term 2, Year 6 was inspired by a visit to the Dandenong Ranges and the undertaking of school grounds survey, to create

a “School Grounds Management Plan”. They identified the areas of need around the school to be: fixing garden beds, quiet

places to sit, working bee clean ups, planting more native plants, outside art work and bird boxes to encourage native birds.

They choose to work in the group that they are most interested in. The Year Six students worked very hard across three

Inquiry Action Days to implement this plan.

While beautify our school, the students were also gaining valuable skills and learning in the areas of: taking pride in their

surroundings, connecting to the wider community, their sense of value and self-worth as well as meeting many curriculum

outcomes. The Year Sixes are to be commended on their efforts and should feel proud of their achievements.

Garden Bed Group

We decided that the garden beds needed some updating. So we pulled out weeds and dead plants, tested the soil, planted

new native plants and we laid out mulch. We even planted a Lone Pine, to remember the soldiers who fought for us in the

war. In the end, our garden beds look fabulous and it was all worth it.

Art Group

The dedicated Art Group decided to make some Poppies to go with our Lone Pine Tree to create a memorial wall. The

Poppies were made of old lids or platers and painted red. After they were red we put a black dot in the middle to make it

look like a Poppy. Once we did that we stuck them to the wall behind the Lone Pine and added some hoses under it for a

stem.

Compost Group

Over a period of time, the compost group has helped to make the school more sustainable. We started by putting buckets in

each classroom and encouraged people to put their fruit scraps in it. We collected them every second day of the week and

emptied them into the big compost bin.

Tables and Chairs Group

On Wednesday we had our last action day and we painted the tables and chairs a nice shade of blue. This made the tables

look newer and more inviting. We got to this stage by cleaning the tables, asking for permission and lots of planning.

Our main idea to start with was to create more tables and chairs around our school grounds. But that idea was too

challenging and out of our reach. So we settled on a less challenging but still effective idea, painting them.

We all had a great time and we all feel really great because we’ve made the school a more beautiful place.

Fitness Track Group

On Wednesday some of the year sixes helped improve and brighten the school by spray painting yellow feet on the fitness

track. We’ve completed a quarter of the track and are planning on completing the rest. We were held back by the wind

blowing the spray paint everywhere but we’re happy with the outcome. A small group of children also swept the fitness

track. This helped out the school because the fitness track was cleaner and safer. We all had a great time.

Window Washing Group

On the 25th November all of the Year 6 students had their 3

rd hard working Inquiry Action Day. The purpose of the day was

to make Kent Park a nicer, cleaner and happier place to be. Our group washed windows. We worked really hard to make

the school look good. After we were done, they looked amazing and we were all really proud.

Sweeping Paths

On the end of the 25th November the Year Six children of Kent Park Primary School were exhausted. We had just

participated in our third and last action day. The windows sparkled and the paths were spotless. The results were excellent

and everyone was filled with pride.

Bird Boxes Group

After all our hard work across the last two terms, our Inquiry action finally came to an exciting conclusion. After a lot of

research and planning, we decided to try and attract native birds by making bird boxes to go up in the school grounds.

Bunnings Scoresby volunteered to help us make the bird boxes as part of their community program, bringing with them all

of the tools and wood that we needed to build our bird boxes.

We worked strenuously in pairs to hammer the pieces of wood together and finally had life-sized bird boxes built. No bird

box is complete without the finishing touches of natural colours. We painted our boxes so that they would camouflage with

the native trees. We hope the boxes will attract the native Crimson Rosellas as a nesting place.

A special thanks to Bunnings Scoresby for making this project possible.

Volunteer Canteen Help For 2016

MONDAY & THURSDAY

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Yes, it’s that time again to think about Canteen duty for 2016. Without your help the Canteen will not be able to open on

the 2 days it is presently, so we need your help to keep the Canteen open. Can you spare YOUR school 2 to 4½ hours of

your time a month?

If you’re willing and are able, please volunteer for Canteen in 2016. Without your help and support, the availability of the

Canteen will be limited.

It is a great opportunity to catch up and have coffee with your friends as well as bringing a smile to your child’s face. It is

not hard and we will be there to show all the new-comers the ropes. An information session will be held for all volunteers

regarding the running/procedures of the Canteen prior to opening. The Canteen Policy states that toddlers are not permitted

in the Canteen for health and safety reasons. Healthy practices are used for food handling during preparation of food

(washing hands regularly and wearing an apron).

If you, mum, dad, nana, grandma etc. can volunteer your time for the canteen, it would be appreciated if you could return

the attached form to the School Office AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. The Canteen will NOT open until all positions are

filled adequately and we will advise the community as soon as possible.

Please note: If someone other than the student’s parents are volunteering, ie. grandparent, aunt/uncle etc, a Working With

Children Check must be produced. When filling out the Working With Children Check form (available at all Australian

Post Offices), there is no charge if you are filling it out as a ‘Volunteer’.

A big thank you to all our volunteers.

Alison Macauley

Principal
